Description
S 33° 49.943 E 151° 05.356 There are 22 stations along the walkway with each one providing historical accounts and images about major events that occurred at that particular location. You'll need to visit several of these to gather clues to the final location of the cache. Visit Gorari Station and find out how many members of 25 Brigade were killed between the time they first moved into the Owen Stanly Range until they reached Kumusi River. Add this number to the Easting Seconds to get the cache's Easting Seconds. Swaps are not required. We'll keep the cache topped-up with items - please just log anything you take. While you're in the area, also check-out Opposite Congregation & Old Rusty caches (thanks "Ropes"). Check-out some of our other caches: Â Â
A chance to "walk the Kokoda Track" and reflect on the contribution that those who fought there made to our Australian way of life. Please respect the memorial and the surrounding area.
The Memorial
The 800-meter-long Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway lies near Bray's Bay Reserve, close to Concord Hospital. In addition to providing a lasting Memorial to all veterans, it specifically aims to provide an educational experience about the significance the Kokoda Track played as a part of our Australian heritage.
Facilities
There is a cafe where sandwiches, drinks, ice-creams and souvenirs may be purchased. Nearby sheltered BBQ facilities or a tour of the Memorial may be pre-booked by phoning the cafe on (02) 8765 1797. Toilets and a children's playground are close to the cafe. There is a restaurant near the Bray's Bay Reserve carpark. The whole area has easy disabled-person access. Bikes, rollerblades and skateboards are prohibited on the walkway.
How To Get There
Bus:
Take either route 461 City- Ryde (Strathfield to Ryde section early mornings, late afternoons, Sundays) or route 458 Burwood - Ryde.
Rail:
Train to Rhodes station, then a short walk down-hill towards Concord Road and onto the Memorial Walkway at Bray's Bay Reserve.
Car:
Parking is available at the hospital car park on Hospital Road. A parking fee of $4.00 is required. There is 2 hour free parking available in Rhodes Park with access via Fremont St. There is also 3 hour free parking available at Brays Bay Reserve, off Concord Rd.
The Cache
The published co-ordinates above will place you onto the Kokoda Memorial Walkway. They are also used to calculate the position of the cache.
The plaque at Ioribaiwa Station records that the Japanese soldiers were rationed to less than how many cups of rice per day? Add this number to the Southing Minutes to get the new Southing Minutes for the cache.
To get the cache's Southing Seconds, you'll need to first add a couple of distances together. Milne Bay Stations' plaque records the number of meters gained by the Australians on August 26th before they were forced to retreat. Add this number to
the height of the banyan tree (mentioned on the plaque at Buna Station) that both the Japanese and the Australians used (obviously at different times) as a look-out post. Subtract this combined total number of meters from the Southing Seconds to get the new Southing Seconds for the cache.
Enjoy our first cache!

Logs
I have driven past this park many many times and often thought I should pop in and walk the track. So earlier this week on a rainy morning we visited to collect the required info. This is an wonderful mermorial to the soldiers, such a well thought out walk, both informative and immersive. The rain only added to the feeling that we were walking the track through the jungle.
After reading all the info at the stations and calculating a likely GZ at home we returned today to make the find. Coords were spot on and the camo was quickly spotted. As mentioned by previous finders the outer is deteriorating and every time I moved it it started to break up further so with minimal handling I extracted the inner. Inner is in good condition, contents are dry. Signed the log and took a small flag, thank you. Returned as found and was as careful as possible when replacing the outer. Appreciate the effort that has gone into this hide!
Thanks for a great multi ozjeeper and for bringing us to this place.
GCA find #29
Great container and well cammo'd. The ants like it at the moment, but that takes nothing away from the great area and neat little multi.
Enjoy the fun...hope other GCAer's can get out and give it a go.
Thanks Ozjeeper... *Recommended*
All is well with the cache.
Thanks for the cache.
Since I had not kept the info I did the walk all over again, no hardship at all!
I ended on the same patch of ground I was on last time when I spied the likely hide, I have seen several just like it over the last few years so I guess experience does count for something after all.
Thanks for a great cache.

The memorial walk was excellent though. Learnt a lot!
What a great walk around, thanks for the history lesson.. Don't forget to pick up the munzees as you walk the path. Took some time to locate the cache, my advice walk out to the grassy area with no tree coverage and wait untill your GPSr settles then follow the arrow straight to the cache. Thanks again TNSLLN
Very interesting place. I didnt know most of this history.
Zhaomin from China
The walk collecting the clues for the final co-ordinates was lovely and we learnt a lot about the many sacrifices made for our country.
Thanks ozjeeper for an ingeniously hidden geocache TFTC.
Took one coin for the kids.

Mr Ozjeeper braved a drizzly afternoon and placed the new container on a detour home from work this evening.
KOKODA is all ready for he next finder!
The cache is temporarily disabled until a new cache container has been placed.
Though, we'd suggest you don't hunt for it after dark, the malaria is authentic once the sun sets in the marshes!
Great cache and (cheap plug for Scouts Australia) join scouts!
Yours in scouting.

Really nice cache setup ozjeeper! Hope to meet up one day. TFTC.
It took me a while to walk the path and find the clues, eventually had them all in hand and was scratching around GZ looking for the cache, without much luck. As it was getting dark, and recent logs had mentioned some knowledgable local cachers - I rang the blossom* help-line and got put back on the path to the right spot. It turns out I had followed the GPS arrow too far into the trees! Thanks very much, I never would have found it without this help.
I picked up the swaggie (waht's this?) - my first. Thanks for bringing me here for a fine bit of learning and caching.
The week between searches has been long with anticipation. A week's thought and some words of encouragement from the owner made for quick success. Took a coin for the junior member of the team (3 yr old).
We were both sickened when we heard that sombody had defaced this War Memorial as it has special significance for us.
We were therefore somewhat relieved when we inspected it this morning to find that the grafiti on the plaques at the stations has been cleaned. There are some damaged audio units and some surface marks at some of the stations that still need attention.
There is a Victory In The Pacific service and parade at 2:00pm on Sunday 15th August that we are planning to attend. If any other cachers plan on attending, let us know so we can catch up.
Maybe worth checking the cache and taking it offline for a while.
TFTC and the interesting history lesson.
It's a pity Zagarieth's re-try didn't coincide with our visit as it's always great to catch up with other cachers and have a yarn.
This is where the pain began. I spent around an hour here with no joy. I had a good idea of what I was looking for but there seemed to be nothing that fitted the bill.
Either I have miscalculated GZ (doubtful, I double checked the #'s several times), its not there (although this cache has tripped up many a seasoned expeditioner!), or this is NOT a 2.5 difficulty hide
Having read Oz say "It's not in the middle of any vegetation. It's not under a rock. It's not covered by grass. It's not covered by leaves. It's not up a tree. It's certainly not buried. It's in plain view from near GZ" and the hint it seemed pretty obvious what the plain view camo should be, but in the serch area suggest by Blossom (and then some) being near the path there was nothing of that description
Got tired and frustraited evenually and gave up. Will have to try again soon as others have said, this is a top cache! Just wish it ended in a smiley today! Next Time...
This is the absolute best memorial walk I've ever seen. It is extremely well done, well written and well maintained. The gardens around the walkway are obviously maintained frequently and really add to the feeling of the jungle along the kokoda trail, especially around the memorial with the waterfalls and tall palms.
We gathered all the information and found GZ with no trouble. However, then I was stuck! What on earth could the cache container be?? As there was a large amount of fresh wood chip mulch all along the edge of the walkway, we were deciding that the cache may well have been found or covered by the gardeners.
We wandered (unecessarily) through the trees back from the path for a while and looked at the freshly mulched areas in sadness for the possibly-covered cache. I phoned a friend.
With a clue to follow now, Strike-a-light found the cache very quickly. Yeah!!! For those who follow, the GZ co-ords were good for us today and the cache is less than 2 metres from the concrete path, although not able to be seen from every angle. There is little chance of it being covered by mulch or discovered in any weeding operations.
So I would recommend everyone checking out this one. It's a top spot! I dropped a swaggie in here too so go recue him and take him to another interesting location.
Definitely worth doing this cache just for the walk though haha!!!
We don't live in the area so can't simply drop by and redo it.
Anyway finally got all the clues together and did the math... but could not locate cache.
Great idea though.
Well worth stopping and doing this one.
I loved the cache itself, something I have been contemplating doing for a while now. Gave me a chance to sit in the cool while filling in the log. Let the cache contents air for a while in the sun as they were a bit damp.

Good one ozjeeper.

Although it seems due to a fire some damage happened to the electrical system.
The cache hide is nice but reminded me on another nice cache of ozjeeper.

the find is dedicated to my old caching friend yogman
proud PLG member
If my maths had been up to scratch I wouldn't have ended up wandering around Concord Hospital carpark (flat tarmac is never a good hiding place for a cache).
When I got my act together, the hide is superb and certainly one of the best hides I have ever seen. The cache is still rammed full of goodies and was dry. Coords were spot on. Fantastic cache, great area, everyone should spend the time to not only do the cache but thoroughly explore the informative Kokoda trail. Thanks Ozjeeper I loved this one. J&J
Great walk and cool hide.
Again Mrs Nilbog and I proved we work better as a team. TFTC.
Took a coin.
Thanks muchly for this one!
Cachers having problems finding the cache location can contact us for help. Reading our earlier log-notes may also help to find the container a bit easier.
Came with the older member of the team by bike on a hot, sunday morning. Rode around the walkway taking down various numbers and learning a great deal of history to boot.
After walking the track several times and resolving to properly read the info, a new set of co-ords were punched in. Came to the location and and as usual, looked in the obvious and not so obvious places.
I happened to find it quickly-(wow)- so I thought I'd replace it and once again let the older member of the team to search around laughing my head of completely.
He eventually found it and was struck dumb. I was too. All I can say is that this was a perfectly executed and placed cache with wonderful surroundings that add to a superb finish.
WELL DONE OZJEEPER!!!
Cheers

thanks for the great hide, well done, and the hunt

Unfortunately I got carried away and left a geocoin here, so I had to return to recover it so I could log it elsewhere properly.

A very clever hide. I didn't have to think hard about the clue, but finding the hide took a little longer. Great cache. TNLN
THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST CACHE I HAVE EVER DONE. INTERESTING, HISTORICAL, INTRIGUING, PURE BRILLIANCE! GET OUT THERE AND TRY THIS ONE & DON'T GIVE UP. Took a PNG coin, I've never seen one of these before. Thank you so much for the effort that went into this adventure.
It's not in the middle of any vegetation. It's not under a rock. It's not covered by grass. It's not covered by leaves. It's not up a tree. It's certainly not buried. It's in plain view from near GZ.
You do not have to lift anything. You do not have to move anything. You do not have to dig.
Once you know what the cache looks like, it can be easily seen from the paved walkway near GZ.
Reading the hint may help.
Finally found on the fourth visit.
First trips were searching for a way point that had been removed, next was to find the required Co ordinates and required information to reach GZ. Searched GZ but came up empty handed, After confirming the cache was still there with Ozjeeper the cache was mine when I returned today
Nice job Ozjeeper
Thanks
keener
These published co-ordinates are now used to place you on the walkway and also used as the basis for the maths. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by the missing co-ordinates from the (old) WP1. Happy Caching!
Unfortunately, didn't find the cache. The opening description was confusing as it says "at WPT1 you'll find a set of coordinates". Does that mean these are additional to the ones listed and where do you find them? Are they in a micro attached to something? Couldn't find any additional coords so put the info found, into given coords but ended up in the middle of the car park near the cafe. Looked within a set radius but couldn't find anywhere that would hide a small cache. Maybe the hint could be a little more specific?! Thanks for bringing me to such an interesting location though.
