Description

S 33° 49.943      E 151° 05.356

A chance to "walk the Kokoda Track" and reflect on the contribution that those who fought there made to our Australian way of life. Please respect the memorial and the surrounding area.
The Memorial The 800-meter-long Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway lies near Bray's Bay Reserve, close to Concord Hospital. In addition to providing a lasting Memorial to all veterans, it specifically aims to provide an educational experience about the significance the Kokoda Track played as a part of our Australian heritage.

There are 22 stations along the walkway with each one providing historical accounts and images about major events that occurred at that particular location. You'll need to visit several of these to gather clues to the final location of the cache.

Facilities There is a cafe where sandwiches, drinks, ice-creams and souvenirs may be purchased. Nearby sheltered BBQ facilities or a tour of the Memorial may be pre-booked by phoning the cafe on (02) 8765 1797. Toilets and a children's playground are close to the cafe. There is a restaurant near the Bray's Bay Reserve carpark. The whole area has easy disabled-person access. Bikes, rollerblades and skateboards are prohibited on the walkway.

How To Get There Bus:
Take either route 461 City- Ryde (Strathfield to Ryde section early mornings, late afternoons, Sundays) or route 458 Burwood - Ryde.
  Rail:
Train to Rhodes station, then a short walk down-hill towards Concord Road and onto the Memorial Walkway at Bray's Bay Reserve.
  Car:
Parking is available at the hospital car park on Hospital Road. A parking fee of $4.00 is required. There is 2 hour free parking available in Rhodes Park with access via Fremont St. There is also 3 hour free parking available at Brays Bay Reserve, off Concord Rd.

The Cache

The published co-ordinates above will place you onto the Kokoda Memorial Walkway. They are also used to calculate the position of the cache.

Visit Gorari Station and find out how many members of 25 Brigade were killed between the time they first moved into the Owen Stanly Range until they reached Kumusi River. Add this number to the Easting Seconds to get the cache's Easting Seconds.

The plaque at Ioribaiwa Station records that the Japanese soldiers were rationed to less than how many cups of rice per day? Add this number to the Southing Minutes to get the new Southing Minutes for the cache.

To get the cache's Southing Seconds, you'll need to first add a couple of distances together. Milne Bay Stations' plaque records the number of meters gained by the Australians on August 26th before they were forced to retreat. Add this number to
the height of the banyan tree (mentioned on the plaque at Buna Station) that both the Japanese and the Australians used (obviously at different times) as a look-out post. Subtract this combined total number of meters from the Southing Seconds to get the new Southing Seconds for the cache.

Swaps are not required. We'll keep the cache topped-up with items - please just log anything you take.

While you're in the area, also check-out Opposite Congregation & Old Rusty caches (thanks "Ropes").
Enjoy our first cache!

Did the necessary calcs but had no luck at the GZ these pointed at. The park is a great tribute to our WWII heroes.

Found today!
I have driven past this park many many times and often thought I should pop in and walk the track. So earlier this week on a rainy morning we visited to collect the required info. This is an wonderful mermorial to the soldiers, such a well thought out walk, both informative and immersive. The rain only added to the feeling that we were walking the track through the jungle.
After reading all the info at the stations and calculating a likely GZ at home we returned today to make the find. Coords were spot on and the camo was quickly spotted. As mentioned by previous finders the outer is deteriorating and every time I moved it it started to break up further so with minimal handling I extracted the inner. Inner is in good condition, contents are dry. Signed the log and took a small flag, thank you. Returned as found and was as careful as possible when replacing the outer. Appreciate the effort that has gone into this hide!
Thanks for a great multi ozjeeper and for bringing us to this place.

After going to the dawn service at Lalor Park I then went to Hawkesbury to got a few caches. Decided at the appropriate cache for ANZAC Day would be to do Kokoda so I got to the car park just as it started to rain. Found the information that I needed to find the final cache. Got to GZ and tried every area that the GPSr wanted me to try, dont think it liked the rain. After a bit of searching finally located the final. The outer hide has fallen a bit apart. However the log & cache are in good order. Thanks for the multi ozjeeper

I actually found all of the information a few weeks ago but I must have gotten one number wrong as I was being lead to a fairly empty place. Running out of time I went home and rechecked getting a different and more promising location. Looked today and found the well disguised cache. Thanks

In Sydney on a day trip chasing trigs and GeGnome and headed by this one again. Had visited the area once before, but traffic, weather and the need to move on beat me. So today, with time, a good park and understanding driver, the work was done and the cache was soon in hand....

Great container and well cammo'd. The ants like it at the moment, but that takes nothing away from the great area and neat little multi.

Enjoy the fun...hope other GCAer's can get out and give it a go.

Thanks Ozjeeper... *Recommended* Clan CerberusClan Cerberus

#GA574 - 15:10; I had dropped the geohoney off at one of her favorite shopping emporiums and made my way back here for a third, and thankfully final, try for this cache. The first try was hampered by wet weather and the second by a miscalculation. No such problems today, and while the search took a few minutes, I would up with cache in hand and a big smile at last. All was in good order and a bit more diligence on the last visit could have resulted in a find back then. TFTC ozjeeper Very HappyClan Cerberus

With some time to spare between lectures I thought l would try for this one.
All is well with the cache.
Thanks for the cache.

After walking the track many times for the GC Kokoda cache. I didnt realize there was a GCA one too. Again, I needed to re walk this many times like the other cache because I kept missing the info required. Plus I continued to calculate the numbers wrong which didnt seem right. I finally got the numbers right which put me very close to GZ and in doing found the cache in no time. Great cache as with the GC caches here too. TFTC.

I can't believe it has taken almost 3 years for me to come beck here.
Since I had not kept the info I did the walk all over again, no hardship at all!
I ended on the same patch of ground I was on last time when I spied the likely hide, I have seen several just like it over the last few years so I guess experience does count for something after all.
Thanks for a great cache.

Thanks Cherry Red for posting the news about Rusty. We were privileged to be able to meet him several times whilst we were attending Memorial Services. His legacy will always live on.

A beautiful sunny Sydney Sunday was the perfect time for a cache check and a leisurly stoll along the Memorial Walkway. The cache container is exactly where it is supposed to be with the contents nice and dry.

Has any one been able to locate this cache recently? Looked around the GZ for a long time, pretty sure I had the right coordinates but couldn't find it.

The memorial walk was excellent though. Learnt a lot!

Find #22 - Found on 15/03/13 2:22 PM
What a great walk around, thanks for the history lesson.. Don't forget to pick up the munzees as you walk the path. Took some time to locate the cache, my advice walk out to the grassy area with no tree coverage and wait untill your GPSr settles then follow the arrow straight to the cache. Thanks again TNSLLN

Very impressive cache, Ozjeeper! Really enjoyed the adventure and the search. Thanks!

What a great walk! Zal and I came here to capture some Munzees today and we did this cache too. It has been so long since Zal found it, it took us a while to locate in the end. Knowing what to search for helped, not sure I would have spotted it. Zal said it has deteriorated a little but not too bad Smile

Very interesting place. I didnt know most of this history.

Had great fun searching for our very first geocache Clapping
The walk collecting the clues for the final co-ordinates was lovely and we learnt a lot about the many sacrifices made for our country.
Thanks ozjeeper for an ingeniously hidden geocache Dancing TFTC.

Collected the clues yesterday and came back with the calculations done. Took a little while at GA as my GPS bounced around, and them an ah-ha moment as I found the cache. Great container.

Houseguests, parties, a wedding and unseasonably wet weather prevented placement of a new container for a bit longer than we had planned for.

Mr Ozjeeper braved a drizzly afternoon and placed the new container on a detour home from work this evening.

KOKODA is all ready for he next finder!

04-Jan-12
As the result of a recent log, Mr Ozjeeper dropped by o his way home from work for a cache check. We already knew that the container would need to be replaced soon - but not quite this soon!

The cache is temporarily disabled until a new cache container has been placed.

Our Rover crew had a shot at finding this cache. After a bit of walking, reading and learning we found the coords and set about hunting for the cache. We found it snugly positioned and took one of the wooden guys.
Though, we'd suggest you don't hunt for it after dark, the malaria is authentic once the sun sets in the marshes!
Great cache and (cheap plug for Scouts Australia) join scouts!
Yours in scouting. Very Happy

A detour on the way home from work this evening found the cache container exactly where it is supposed to be in plain sight from the walkway. it is not under vegetation, bark or leaf litter. You do not have to move anything to find it.

Finally!!! 3 visits, 2 DNF's and 1 found cache. A very pleasent walk and history lesson here. Many information bays and much to take in, but the clues were easy enough to find. It was GZ that gave me trouble. After checking with the CO to make sure all was ok and I had the right coords, I went back again today and walked right up to it. How did I miss that? Camo was off and ants were everywhere, but it was still covered enough. SL, TNLN and replaced.

Really nice cache setup ozjeeper! Hope to meet up one day. TFTC.

17-Sep-11
Well I got to GZ eventually but after spending 20 minutes looking all over the numerous hiding spots, nothing to be found. I made an exception to my no multi rule since I am always walking and on a tight time frame, and spent too much time looking for this one and missed my train back to Lithgow! That will teach me to disregard my own rules.

06-Sep-11
After a few trips back and forth for info, and then running into, a Kokoda memorial service, A group of School kids, and the weather, I was finally able to hunt around GZ. That is if I have GZ coords correct Question I searched for 25min, before giving up. A great history lesson nonetheless and a nice sunny day for caching. I'll be back.

Thanks for an interesting tour along the Kokoda Track. The cache was a little damp after yesterday's rain, but still in good shape.

16-Jan-11
Great location for a GC and excellent multi. Very fitting that you need to walk the entire "track" and visit each station to solve the clues. Armed with the coordinates GZ still took a while to find thanks to the clever camouflage - as it turned out its all in the hint. SLTNLN TFTC Very Happy

I decided to head over to Rhodes after work tonight and check out the trail. It looks like the recent damage has been repaired which is great to see - I was very sad to hear about the very poor effort by some people!

It took me a while to walk the path and find the clues, eventually had them all in hand and was scratching around GZ looking for the cache, without much luck. As it was getting dark, and recent logs had mentioned some knowledgable local cachers - I rang the blossom* help-line and got put back on the path to the right spot. It turns out I had followed the GPS arrow too far into the trees! Thanks very much, I never would have found it without this help.

I picked up the swaggie (waht's this?) - my first. Thanks for bringing me here for a fine bit of learning and caching.

First attempt at GC - thinking of this as a new family activity. Nice walk - got the clues. Pretty certain we've got the coords right - however no luck finding cache. Will try again to find soon. Won't rate overall epxerience until it's found.

The week between searches has been long with anticipation. A week's thought and some words of encouragement from the owner made for quick success. Took a coin for the junior member of the team (3 yr old).

Thanks Spindoctors for the note re the recent vandalism that occured on the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway.

We were both sickened when we heard that sombody had defaced this War Memorial as it has special significance for us.

We were therefore somewhat relieved when we inspected it this morning to find that the grafiti on the plaques at the stations has been cleaned. There are some damaged audio units and some surface marks at some of the stations that still need attention.

There is a Victory In The Pacific service and parade at 2:00pm on Sunday 15th August that we are planning to attend. If any other cachers plan on attending, let us know so we can catch up.

Sadly, someone has badly vandalised the memorial walk - http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/40000-trail-of-destruction-hunt-for-kokoda-memorial-vandal-20100728-10vr9.html

Maybe worth checking the cache and taking it offline for a while.

We did a cache check around noon to make sure it was still OK and it's still where it was placed, in plain sight from the path. We took the chance to fill it up with some more swaps.

It's a pity Zagarieth's re-try didn't coincide with our visit as it's always great to catch up with other cachers and have a yarn.

No Wonder I couldnt find it! After a GAFF4 hint from Blossom* and Team Lego Men I went back this morning sure what they described (and what I spent 30mins looking for) was not there... well the good news is it is still alive!!!! Bad news (for me) was that it HAD been mulched to a decent depth, my excuse for not spotting it as the clue and all the comments from the owner were not helpful when its under a few inches of dead leaves and bark. Happily I signed the log, swapped swaggies, and replaced the cache so the clue once more makes sence and the next finder should have a much easier time. Fantastic cache, Oz, even after the frustration! Cheers mate, (and Blossom* and TLM! Smile

24-Jun-10
I missed a clue first time along but once I got the info you need there, I then start enjoying the walk from station to station, reading, learning, and examining the well made displays and info boards. A number of the 'audios' were not working but enough to make it very interesting and immersive. I eventually got all the numbers after doubling back and ended up at a GZ which made sense.

This is where the pain began. I spent around an hour here with no joy. I had a good idea of what I was looking for but there seemed to be nothing that fitted the bill.

Either I have miscalculated GZ (doubtful, I double checked the #'s several times), its not there (although this cache has tripped up many a seasoned expeditioner!), or this is NOT a 2.5 difficulty hide Razz

Having read Oz say "It's not in the middle of any vegetation. It's not under a rock. It's not covered by grass. It's not covered by leaves. It's not up a tree. It's certainly not buried. It's in plain view from near GZ" and the hint it seemed pretty obvious what the plain view camo should be, but in the serch area suggest by Blossom (and then some) being near the path there was nothing of that description Sad

Got tired and frustraited evenually and gave up. Will have to try again soon as others have said, this is a top cache! Just wish it ended in a smiley today! Smile Next Time...

Wow! I have known about this cache since I first started caching 18 months ago. But I've always been rather scared of it because I figured it would be too hard for me. Finally, I had to tackle it as Strike-a-light wanted to go for a walk today and this was the spot he'd chosen!

This is the absolute best memorial walk I've ever seen. It is extremely well done, well written and well maintained. The gardens around the walkway are obviously maintained frequently and really add to the feeling of the jungle along the kokoda trail, especially around the memorial with the waterfalls and tall palms.

We gathered all the information and found GZ with no trouble. However, then I was stuck! What on earth could the cache container be?? As there was a large amount of fresh wood chip mulch all along the edge of the walkway, we were deciding that the cache may well have been found or covered by the gardeners.

We wandered (unecessarily) through the trees back from the path for a while and looked at the freshly mulched areas in sadness for the possibly-covered cache. I phoned a friend.

With a clue to follow now, Strike-a-light found the cache very quickly. Yeah!!! For those who follow, the GZ co-ords were good for us today and the cache is less than 2 metres from the concrete path, although not able to be seen from every angle. There is little chance of it being covered by mulch or discovered in any weeding operations.

So I would recommend everyone checking out this one. It's a top spot! I dropped a swaggie in here too so go recue him and take him to another interesting location.

Found 13:45. This was our first "GA" cache. A lovely area and a beautiful presented part of our war time history. Having an uncle who served in New Guinea made it all more interesting in reading and listening to the stories. Being the day after ANZAC day wreaths were placed at some of the stations. This would be a moving monument to be at a dawn service. After finding all the clues and doing the math’s the cache was soon in hand. Took a coin, and then off to the café for a couple of coffees. Thanks for a great cache in such a beautiful location.

Searched GZ for a while before locating the cache, took coin, TFTC.

A beautiful walk but DNF. After reading the previous logs and now the clue, i have an idea of where it may be. I'll be back soon Smile
Definitely worth doing this cache just for the walk though haha!!!

Not able to locate cache, spent heaps of time on it. Would have been good if the stations mentioned in "The Cache" section had Geo coordinates.. because we didn't know where the trail started and the initial co-ords provided are not the first station.

We don't live in the area so can't simply drop by and redo it.

Anyway finally got all the clues together and did the math... but could not locate cache.

Great idea though.

A great place with a great history lesson for the younger Geocachers.
Well worth stopping and doing this one.
I loved the cache itself, something I have been contemplating doing for a while now. Gave me a chance to sit in the cool while filling in the log. Let the cache contents air for a while in the sun as they were a bit damp.

Tried this ages ago and must have done something wrong because the final WP was about 1km along the foreshore walk in the mangroves. Went again last weekend and ended up in a much more logical spot but still no joy. Was going to log a DNF but looking at past logs realised what I had missed at GZ. Today drove up without needing the GPS and picked it straight up. TNLNSL, thanks ozjeeper.

On such a warm sunny day this was an excellent area to wander around especially as we didn't even know it existed until today. A very pleasant surprise indeed. We parked our car at the "free" end and commenced our strolling around gathering the required information. Has to do the walk a couple of times as we'd carelessly missed one of the early stations however that was no trial. It's a short easy walk and one we thoroughly enjoyed. Being a very warm day we visited the nearby kiosk for an ice cream on the way - how good is this sort of caching? After finding all the information we needed we were soon at the cache location. After a little while Lady Altaire spotted the nastily hidden cache - very good! Can see why one or three people have struggled to find this one. After the cache duties we wended our way back to the car. We thought this was an outstanding urban cache - very very good. We made no swaps.

Since I met OzJeeper at the Red Moon Event Cache I have been meaning to do this one. Had done the walk previously but really enjoyed rereading the plaques and the cache gave me a new perspective.
If my maths had been up to scratch I wouldn't have ended up wandering around Concord Hospital carpark (flat tarmac is never a good hiding place for a cache).
When I got my act together, the hide is superb and certainly one of the best hides I have ever seen. The cache is still rammed full of goodies and was dry. Coords were spot on. Fantastic cache, great area, everyone should spend the time to not only do the cache but thoroughly explore the informative Kokoda trail. Thanks Ozjeeper I loved this one. J&J

This is a great memorial to those that helped defend our country in the time of war. It was interesting walking the path gathering the clues and learning of some of the hardships encountered by our soldiers. Sneaky cache hide at the end. TNLNSL. Thanks ozjeeper for another great cache.

We had been meaning to do this one for a while and today finally got our chance. Interesting place and some fairly scary karaoke going on in one of the rotundas nearby! We were glad we had done an ozjeeper cache before as it made finding the prize at the end a little less frustrating! Thanks alot for the history lesson and the hunt.

Well, what can I say - what a great cache. Finding it is a story in itself.

Came with the older member of the team by bike on a hot, sunday morning. Rode around the walkway taking down various numbers and learning a great deal of history to boot.

After walking the track several times and resolving to properly read the info, a new set of co-ords were punched in. Came to the location and and as usual, looked in the obvious and not so obvious places.

I happened to find it quickly-(wow)- so I thought I'd replace it and once again let the older member of the team to search around laughing my head of completely.

He eventually found it and was struck dumb. I was too. All I can say is that this was a perfectly executed and placed cache with wonderful surroundings that add to a superb finish.

WELL DONE OZJEEPER!!!

Cheers

A well thought out cache leading to a unique cache. Very well done indeed - I especially loved the pencil and spare lead holders!

Unfortunately I got carried away and left a geocoin here, so I had to return to recover it so I could log it elsewhere properly.

This is a very good hide and we had some fun finding it. I had six of my grand nephews and neices with me (aged 5 to 10) on their first cache. It was quite a process getting the clues together but the kids loved it and, once we got the adjusted co-ords, we found it rather quickly. Thanks for all the fun.

Well what can I say but 3rd time lucky. This one kept nagging away at me. I really thought I knew where to look this time, but when I arrived I saw that more redevelopment and clearing up had taken place. I thought to myself, "Oh no", I was so sure that had to be it, ( Easy GPS locks as a result) I was not giving up and then as I turned around I had a brainwave, that nagging thought just wouldn't go away. Something caught the corner of my eye, " no it couldn't be" and there it was in all it's glory!!!!
THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST CACHE I HAVE EVER DONE. INTERESTING, HISTORICAL, INTRIGUING, PURE BRILLIANCE! GET OUT THERE AND TRY THIS ONE & DON'T GIVE UP. Took a PNG coin, I've never seen one of these before. Thank you so much for the effort that went into this adventure.

A quick visit to check this (apparently) elusive cache and found that it's exactly the same as it was when it was originally placed.

It's not in the middle of any vegetation. It's not under a rock. It's not covered by grass. It's not covered by leaves. It's not up a tree. It's certainly not buried. It's in plain view from near GZ.

You do not have to lift anything. You do not have to move anything. You do not have to dig.

Once you know what the cache looks like, it can be easily seen from the paved walkway near GZ.

Reading the hint may help.

Tried again even with the new coords. Agree with keener this was an epic search and I still couldn't find it. GPS was erratic under the trees and with so many tufts to search it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. There also sems to be new work done in the area with a great deal of soil turned over. Could it have been buried? Gave up in the end. I know it's there somewhere but will leave it for now until more cachers come up with the goods.

This was a bit of an eppic
Finally found on the fourth visit.
First trips were searching for a way point that had been removed, next was to find the required Co ordinates and required information to reach GZ. Searched GZ but came up empty handed, After confirming the cache was still there with Ozjeeper the cache was mine when I returned today
Nice job Ozjeeper

Thanks

The set of coords previously listed at the signs at the (old) WP1 location have now been removed and have been incorporated into the cache listing.

These published co-ordinates are now used to place you on the walkway and also used as the basis for the maths. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by the missing co-ordinates from the (old) WP1. Happy Caching!

Found the walkway and all the relevant info, even ran into "keener". The first time I've met a real cacher in the wild. Nice to meet you!
Unfortunately, didn't find the cache. The opening description was confusing as it says "at WPT1 you'll find a set of coordinates". Does that mean these are additional to the ones listed and where do you find them? Are they in a micro attached to something? Couldn't find any additional coords so put the info found, into given coords but ended up in the middle of the car park near the cafe. Looked within a set radius but couldn't find anywhere that would hide a small cache. Maybe the hint could be a little more specific?! Thanks for bringing me to such an interesting location though.

Our first cache is full of PNG items such as coins, keyrings, fridge magnets, cloth patches and some appropiately-yeared Australian pennies. Swaps are not necessary (at this stage) - please just take an item and log what you've taken. Enjoy your day!
