Description

A virtual dinosaur was placed at this location for National Science Week 2011 - it will apparently be there at least until the end of August.  You will need a smartphone, the current version of the  Layar app and the Jurassic Science Week layer to see the virtual dinosaur.

To log this cache, post a photo of  your visit to gz that includes a dinosaur and something that represents your team (e.g. person, mascot, inanimate object).  The dinosaur can be the virtual one or plastic or plush or pictorial or whatever you choose.

If you enjoy virtual dinosaurs, you might also like to visit the trodon  which is nearby at 42 53.188, 147 19.940.  We have not listed it as a separate virtual cache due to the close proximity to the ceratosaurus.

Not sure what was going on with the Layar App.

Say's it's not available here in this country.

So improvise it was.

A game of chess just near GZ with Rex to beat the polar antarctic freeze blowing in.

Mr T bumped into this fellow while out for lunchtime stroll. Not sure the diners in this area would appreciate it if they knew who was joining them for lunch...TFTC

What better way to spend an hour or so on Christmas day than chasing dinosaurs through the centre of Hobart? Geocaching meets Pokemon perhaps. Thumbs up for the variety. Amazing the dinos are still in residence after 5 years in the wild. Then we discover we're stalking caughtatwork too. Not many muggles for the ceratosaurus to feed on today which was a bonus for us.

This was a fun little virtual cache where I found these with mummmy, Jessica and caughtatwork. Thanks for this cache here today.

Out with the family on a week in Hobart and before lunch we decided to go and find some dinosaurs. I remember when these were first published and was very envious that they were so far away. Today we loaded up the app, grabbed the layer and we were off to see what we could find. We found a lot today and they were all very cool and fun to catch. Thanks for this series of virtual caches with a difference.

I visited the square this morning during Salamanca Markets. I 'brought' a couple of dinosaurs from home in Canberra and took photographs of them interacting with the people in the square. I also include a photograph of the dinosaurs in their natural habitat in Canberra. TFTC DDTs.

We caught a dinosaur, the young waitresses at the coffee shop, thought we were nuts when we told them their was a dinosaur nearby.

Surprised to find these virtual dinosaurs still roaming the streets of Hobart. Today we managed to capture their image and grab a smilie. Thanks DDTs for our dinosaur encounter we enjoyed the experience.

Have been wanting to do these virtuals for a long time and today was the day technology and the dinosaur gods aligned. Had lots of fun. TFTV

SSR and I trued this one out today after he found the right app to make it work. A bit of a laugh as we headed to todays event. TFTC

On our way to todays GC event and found out last night how to do these with the layer app and needed layer. Something different defiantly

Thanks for the cache.

Last dinosaur spotted this morning while having a look around Salamanca. I hope we can find a few more before we leave town. The geokids were enjoying these but they did ask if this was how the new Pokemon have was going to look.
Thanks DDTs for showing us these dinosaurs.

Another Dinosaur find on my last day in Hobart. Great series this, and a fun way to see the town. TFTC

Alas, being the Luddite that I am, I have no smartphone to bless myself with. Embarassed Given, however, that it's OK to log the find with replacement non-virtual ancient reptiles, I decided to arm myself with some alternatives from a nearby shop and track down some of these monsters from the past. This was first on the list and at GZ at 17:45, I spotted a sticky guy trying to climb on board our Oregon 650 (or maybe grab the STF on GA6312 Wink ).

Thanks for this virtual journey DDTs. Clapping

We weren't at the exact coordinates, so Ceratosaurus is mooning us from this angle.
Again, thanks for thinking of these virtuals for a cache.

After a quick lunch in the bakehouse, it was time to clear another from my nearest unfound list. Tim Tam and I slowly crept up on this dino and grabbed a picture before he tried to eat someone.
I think this is the last dino in this cache series for me to log.
Thanks for the cache

Weather was lovely while Dino and I visited this place so that he could commune with his virtual friend. Thanks DDT's.

This trickly little one kept moving about on us. Had to do a few laps of the area to get a picture of him without being too close. Lots of people out at the cafes and enjoying the mild day today. Still got a few to go in this series but love finding them. TFTC.

We brought our pet Ceratosaurus for a visit.

16-Oct-11
I don't have an appropriate device for running the required application, nor do I have a pet dinosaur to bring with me. I hope that a photo taken in the appropriate location showing lack of dinosaur activity is sufficient for logging a find on this cache.

Lookout, budgieTas, the ceratosaurus has spotted your van!
Thankfully it distracted him and he ran by just a couple of feet away.

As i search down these dinosaurs i wonder how strange i look with mobile up in front of me to take photographs.

Hmm, these caches were really only intended for people who had visited the appropriate gz locations in Hobart. Will have to dwell on it.

How about if we logged it in another city?? Wink

Number 2
After a lot of trouble finding some where to park found this one.

25-Aug-11
Parked in Sandy Bay Road and walked to Ground Zero from there.
Loved watching the looks on the faces of the people in a car as they waited for the guy in one with red and blue flashing lights to finish writing their ticket.
Walking down the hill, two ladies were picking shrapnel off the road as I passed by. Slightly damaged cars parked one behind the other looked a little sad for wear.
It's already been a very interesting morning looking for these pre-historics.
Arrived at Ground Zero and couldn't see any strange creature so I fired up the application and bingo, the big guy was having a drink. Couldn't get him to turn around, so you have a shot from the rear.
He must have been thirsty because he was still drinking when I left.
Had an egg and bacon roll for breakfast on the way back to the cache mobile.

25-Aug-11
Found this chap strolling around enjoying the sunshine. And why wouldn't you?

24-Aug-11
After having combined accounts with my caching buddy, I am re-logging previous finds. Cache log as 'Rainbow Daisy' will be removed.

We wanted to go hunting for Ceratosaurus during the evening, so it was decided that the smartest idea was to take geojunior out for dinner beforehand. That way, hopefully he looked more plump and tasty than we did and the dinosaur would eat him first!!! The picture was taken just before the dinosaur consumed both Geojunior and his little dinosaur friend! Thanks for the adventure!
