MULGA BILL'S BICYCLE by A.B. "Banjo" Paterson

'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze;
He turned away the good old horse that served him many days;
He dressed himself in cycling clothes, resplendent to be seen;
He hurried off to town and bought a shining new machine;
And as he wheeled it through the door, with air of lordly pride,
The grinning shop assistant said, "Excuse me, can you ride?"

"See here, young man," said Mulga Bill, "from Walgett to the sea,
From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh, there's none can ride like me.
I'm good all round at everything as everybody knows,
Although I'm not the one to talk - I hate a man that blows.
But riding is my special gift, my chiefest, sole delight;
Just ask a wild duck can it swim, a wildcat can it fight.
There's nothing clothed in hair or hide, or built of flesh or steel,
There's nothing walks or jumps, or runs, on axle, hoof, or wheel,
But what I'll sit, while hide will hold and girths and straps are tight:
I'll ride this here two-wheeled concern right straight away at sight."

'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that sought his own abode,
That perched above Dead Man's Creek, beside the mountain road.
He turned the cycle down the hill and mounted for the fray,
But 'ere he'd gone a dozen yards it bolted clean away.
It left the track, and through the trees, just like a silver steak,
It whistled down the awful slope towards the Dead Man's Creek.

It shaved a stump by half an inch, it dodged a big white-box:
The very wallaroos in fright went scrambling up the rocks,
The wombats hiding in their caves dug deeper underground,
As Mulga Bill, as white as chalk, sat tight to every bound.
It struck a stone and gave a spring that cleared a fallen tree,
It raced beside a precipice as close as close could be;
And then as Mulga Bill let out one last despairing shriek
It made a leap of twenty feet into the Dean Man's Creek.

'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that slowly swam ashore:
He said, "I've had some narrer shaves and lively rides before;
I've rode a wild bull round a yard to win a five-pound bet,
But this was the most awful ride that I've encountered yet.
I'll give that two-wheeled outlaw best; it's shaken all my nerve
To feel it whistle through the air and plunge and buck and swerve.
It's safe at rest in Dead Man's Creek, we'll leave it lying still;
A horse's back is good enough henceforth for Mulga Bill.

Awesome cache! This is my final find on a great pre-work mini adventure. My main goal for today was to work on the current GeosportZ game. This one satisfies a cycling challenge which ties in with the theme of this cache and also the great container holder. Thanks for placing Smile I’ve noted the coordinates for the other caches that this find provides. Cache and contents are in good condition.
Time to get to work…..

#GA3472 - 10:20; Arrived in Brisbane this morning with Sol de lune for day 1 of a long planned mission to cache South East Queensland. After collecting the hire geomobile, we headed up to Mount Gravatt for our first stop and to grab a couple of snaps of the local trig. It was then on to Redlands to try our hand at this series. After collecting our first three in the series we headed down the road for a couple more including this one. Parked the geomobile near the entry gate at the end of the road and made our way back to the other trail which led us to GZ. A bit of a poke around soon revealed an amusing cache hide indeed. Noted the coords needed for some others, signed the log and headed off for some more. TFTC Sambuccasam Very HappyClan Cerberus

Day 1 of a 5 day caching run around south east Queensland with LuckyL10n. After flying in we grabbed our hire car and headed down this way to tackle these caches. We had solved all we could beforehand and the plan was to grab those, and the co-ords for the others out of the caches we found.

Found the way into this one from the nearby street and simply followed the path to a point where we need to head bush. Once at GZ the cache was soon spotted...and wow, what a cache. Love the effort put into this one. We soon had the log in hand and had it signed....and also grabbed the co-ords for the other caches. We then sat for a few minutes working out where to go next, and as we were in the area, we decided to grab a few more. That went pretty much to plan, but of course nothing is perfect. Sad

Anyway, the log and cache were replaced and we were soon on our way. Thanks for a great cache Sambuccasam. Recommended.

Finding this cache took longer than expected - our GPSs wanted us 'over there' but we couldn't find it 'over there'. We even re-did the puzzle in case we'd made a mistake. Nope... same answer. So we spread out and checked everything as per the hint. Not hard really. Very Happy (was 21m out according to our GPS - possibly tree and/or cloud cover)
What a delightful little cache! Had a bit of fun reading the Description (poem) to all. Very Happy
Cache is in great condition. Coords collected for the next 3 caches.
Thanks again for the well crafted cache and fun had.

Love this cache! Very HappyClapping Mrs Wagtail read the poem and we all had a good laugh.
It took us a while to find the cache but eventually the cry 'found it' was heard - Mrs W spotted it.
We collected the other coordinates and were on our way. Thanks for the fun cache.

After I had found the Telescope I checked on this cache and saw that I was 880m away, I was at a quandary. Do I return back to the path that I had left or do I follow the arrow.

I couldn't see any other tracks nearby and I picked a point on the GPS to head to. It was telling me I was heading for Jimmy's Chair. That sounded good enough so I decided to head there. It was only 350m of bush in front of me.

All was good until I came across a creek crossing. It was completely dry but the banks were very steep and I struggled to get out the other side. The rest of the bush bash was uneventful and I came out onto the track where I had planned.

I then followed the main track for a while and found that I had another 100m bush bash to get to the bike in the tree.

A quick find of the cache after I had taken a picture of the bike.

Thanks Sambuccasam. It is surprising what you find in the bush.

No worries with the general location of this one. The black bike has been here for a few months now. I was here for a few weeks before it was elevated to its current location. Very Happy

Another nice quick find here too thanks. *FTF* DancingClan Griffin
