Well I didn't expect to find this one, after 19 months and a pretty devastating cyclone in this time, thought it was a goner! Great walk and reserve, probably not the best time to be doing it, mid winter, but hey I was here. Got to the coordinates, found a pink tag, looked at the biggest tree.... broken in two in the cyclone no doubt, terrible mess, no sign of a cache. Just as I suspected. Went another 10mtrs up the track, tag number 25, crossed the track, found the biggest tree, the motherload of ground coverage, one quick kick of the leaves and Boomshuckalucka, the small sistema container was revealed! As the previous finder said, can't believe more people haven't made the effort to find this cache. Thanks for bringing me here and placing this cache 16 years ago Carla6.

#11,942. I had been staying up at Boundary Stream for the past 3 nights and am heading back to Wellington today. But decided to stop here and do the circuit around the lake. What a lovely reserve full of birdsong. Its always a pleasure seeing how wildlife responds to removing pest species. I think there is potential in this reserve to add even more species as well as the juvenile kiwi. Anyway I reached the back of the lake and took the path up to GZ. Read the hint and headed up to the obvious spot. Was pleased to find the cache immediately. Its a bit damp inside but signed the log and replaced as found. Thanks Carla6 for hiding it here and was surprised so few people make the effort to walk this far into the bush since the cache has been here for 14 years.

Smile Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit … we are now parked up at Napier … decided to go for a drive to pick up some ‘DoC Kiwi Guardians’ at Opouahi/Pan PAC Kiwi Crèche, Boundary Stream Reserve, Shine Falls & lastly at the White Pine Reserve … thought it would be rude not to check out some caches while out … picked up this cache along the way … pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally … TFTC ... Heading down to Napier today and had a few hours to spare. Took the back roads to collect this cache. Thanks Carla for replacing the cache. Nice to change a sad face into a smiley. Enjoyed the walk round the lake. Intrigued by the small “silver fairy bells”. Had no idea what they were for but I’m sure DOC know what they are doing!

No luck with this one. But will definitely be back one day for another walk, maybe to the lookout next time. Smile

14-Dec-18
Searched, but it was getting dark and wet, too many ferns so will come back on a drier day.

15-Jul-17
Reading the description til the end made me find it quickly. Was very wet inside after all the rain during this week. Log is in a bag, but still not really dry.

Nice and easy one, and gorgeous walk around the lake.

23-Jan-17
The cache would be better named "we are going on a needle in a haystack hut". Don't go looking at the base of a tree ferns (Ponga). It is at the base of ground ferns and on the right side of the area of ferns when looking from the track.

Cheers for the cache.

No finds in almost a year, we gave it a good look and checked behind every hint object for more than double the distance suggested, no luck. Enjoyed our walk around the lake.

21-Nov-15
A beautiful walk around the lake spotting fish and listening to the birds. I even think I heard a Kiwi not far from here. Cache didnt take too long to find, lots of ferns around to choose from though! I am keen to come back and continue up the track to the lookout sometime. TFTC Smile

No luck on this one today...persevered as it had just recently been found but the kids didn't have much patience. ..I reckon we must have been looking right at it. Oh well ...great to have an excuse to come back!

31-Oct-15
This is a magical spot and brings back amazing memories. Last time I was here I was fortunate enough to hold a kiwi. We enjoyed our stroll around the lake and a couple of huge wetas were asleep in their house in the tree. Two tuis were having a big fight here which was entertaining to watch. TFTC at this special place. No kiwis today they were all fast asleep.

31-Oct-15
On an afternoons caching trip up this way this was on our list of caches to do. We had limited time so was a quick dash around the lake to find this cache. once we got to GZ we were very lucky to have pretty much an instant find. Tipped a little bit of water out of the bottom of the cache. Log book was ok. No kiwis to be seen today. TFTC

26-Oct-15
Cache now to be found

23-Apr-14
A bit of a hunt here and quite wet after recent rains (farmers very happy!)...great place...TFTC

28-Dec-13
We had just finished up at Shine Falls and decided to detour here. Going along our fuel light came on, so we quickly turned around and headed back to the Tutira store and was able to get some. Came back and joined the group and started to head off around the lake just as it started to shower lightly. The rain increased and was coming down at a good steady pace, so we all ended up jogging around the lake. Near ground zero, with the rain and cover my reception was all over the place going from 6-22 metres accuracy. So in the heavy rain, soaked to the bone and trying to protect my camera and GPSr, my search was pretty limited. Only spent a minute or two looking and slipping on the track several times.

Good times! Loved the area, and the work being done here to return to kiwi back to the wild. I will be back here for sure.

01-Nov-12
Took a bit of a search, but after re-reading the hint we soon had it in our hands.
We were up here with my dad and my sister who both help out with the tracking and health checking the baby kiwis.
We were lucky enough to be present while they were changing a transmitter on one of the kiwis, so we had an up close and personal experience with our national icon.
The log and content of the cache were all wet, so we will try and get a better container and new log etc and give it to Dad to replace it.
TFTC! Smile

Nice loop walk around the lake. Track quite wet in places. Found cache after about 10minutes searching, but lost my GPSr in the process - took about 25 minutes to find it!! A bright colour would have been easier to find. SL TFTC

11-Jul-10
Damn, found at last on second attempt. Pity as I love this little lake and I'm not sure when I'll return now. The posse from the HB event had been to this one too before us today but not logged yet, some were here from the day before too. This is a super location but I'll have to bring a boat next time as the lake looks so serene. BTW, the whoopee cushion looks in good order and remains for the next visitor. TNLN TFTC.

23-Jun-10
Found it today while on a jaunt with the tramping club. The walk was beautiful.

A lovely mid-winter day in Hawke's Bay!

12-May-10
Found on a midweek trip with tramping club, including Spooners Hill and Bellbird Bush. TN,LN, thought the whoopee cushion in our 20-passenger truck could be a slight problem! Cache is still inside two closed plastic bags, but despite that, logbook is damp. I did not have a spare to leave, sorry, TFTC.

Yeah #200. On a lovely warm Friday evening the whole family went for a gentle stroll round the kiwi enclosure. Beautiful. Unfortunately we left the cellphone in the car so couldn't get any pictures but it was gorgeous. Great way to celebrate our #200.

Easy walk to an easy cache - well son thought so as it was under the first bush HE looked under!!!! Out chalk in wooppee cushion. TFTC

21-Mar-10

I'll be back Smile

I think we looked around every possible location to find this, but couldn't spot it. there was some coordinate/GPS issues as well. Disappointed about the cache, but what a splendid location for the lake and the creche.

15-Jan-10
Went to get this one on the first wet Hawkes Bay day of the year. Could not have been far away but checked just about every fern tree in range and got absolutely drenched. Awesome spot but after about 20 minutes had to concede as was also having signal issues. Very much looking forward to going back to this one on a much dryer day and seeing the lake in a different perspective and maybe the trees on the other side! Might do as a night cache as it's perfect for this.

30-Dec-09
DNF We went searching for this cache, initially taking the wrong path outside the fence, definitely not recommended, finally had a view of the lake and realised that we were in the wrong location, and back to the car, arrived at correct parking co-ordinates and a walk in a nice reserve, WOW what a hidden gem of a place, arrived at GZ had a search for 20 minutes but no success so we had to give up, but will definitely be back to try again next time we are here if the cache is found, no cache BUT great views

29-Sep-09
Unable to find. Intermittent satellite coverage with GPS. Muggled by kiwi creche worker, learned some really interesting stuff. Tried with J,J,T,M,P,A after Boundary Stream walk and listening to kokako.

29-Sep-09
found this with my New Zealand cousins who are geocachers themselves.

29-Sep-09
Yep found today with the Aussi cuzzies.

Awesome place, must come back at night and listen for the Kiwi.

Decided that this was the perfect location for our 100th find.
What a great reserve, no sign of any kiwis other than ourselves.
Weather was horrendous, lots of rain and at times couldnt even see other side of lake!
Cache was in place and despite gps accuracy down to around 17m we managed to find.

To celebrate the find we have also left our very first geocoin which has its own mission of trying and get to as many caches as we have found, so hopefully someone gets out here soon and gets it moving along

TFTC

Unfortunately could not find this one - spent about half an hour scratching around in the tree ferns - not helped by a jumpy signal. Too bad, but this is a wonderful area to visit and it is great to see the good work that is going on to nurture young kiwis.

Great location for a cache, well worth the detour off the main road.
Very scenic, but I didn't see any kiwis. They were probably all asleep.
There was no pen or pencil in the cache, but fortunately I had one on me.
Thanks.
