WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 124 - Kununurra Day 1. I took a day trip to Wyndham. There were three stops not too far from Kununurra and one old DNF in Wyndham to be found. I then took a side trip along the King River to visit a dam and a big old Boab tree, where I also had lunch. On my return journey I stopped at the Grotto for a peaceful swim at the vacant water hole before finishing the drive back to Kununurra. After another swim in the pool I headed into town for dinner at the local hotel. The final four caches for the day were along side the King River. I stopped for lunch here, although I ate in the shade at the other one, the cache was spied and extracted for signing. Thanks for the cache Bushies248942.7 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & 2008 Australia Emu 1 A#96**Albida**
Quick park and grab here while exploring the Wyndham area. Awesome spot here!TFTH
We headed up to Wyndham for the day. After having a look around we headed out to the prison tree. They wouldn't have been able to have very large prisoners to be able to get through the hole.
Thanks for placing this cache

We are travelling from SA to NT and around the WA coast back to SA. Along the way geocaching is taking us to some amazing places.
Apologies for the late log as we are travelling to some quite remote placesand we are a bit behind.
Some interesting but very sad history here. While driving around the top end we have fallen in love with these big boabs.

Heading north with richlink on our way to Darwin and beyond enjoying the spectacular scenery and finding a cache or two along our route. We loved exploring the Wyndham area. This cache was as amazing as it was worrying, the this we can do to our fellow human beings. Thanks Bushies2.
A day out in Wyndam and surrounds saw us have a great day ending at Parry's Lagoon.
The prison tree, rock art, Water lilies, Lotus, Pigs, Crocs, Buffalo, Barramundi pie, a sit and photo in the local Cop Cruiser ... a fun day for sure, this was one of the caches we found along the way, sorry for the late and generic log.

Up in the Kimberley’s, exploring the outback, off the beaten track roads.
The landscape is stunning up here, the rich golden colours of the tall grasses, the contrasting skies of dawn and dusk, with a boab tree highlighted on the horizon.
As we drove along the tracks, we followed two brolgas walking along the road, where else in the world can anyone see this magnificent feat of nature
We drove along and pulled into the parking bay for the Prison Tree, sad to see the information sign has been removed.
The Boab Tree was an amazing sight to see, so huge, no snakes today.
A nice quick easy find here today.
Thanks for sharing this interesting historical location

All the information boards have been removed. The tree was an excellent boat. Not so excellent was the 2m brown snake taking up residence inside it. Eeek!!!
Favourite point added here. Well worth the drive Bushies2

Well worth a trip out to this amazing site. Before getting too close I checked inside the tree and there was a snake or two! Lucky the cache wasn’t in the tree!! Thanks for the cache at this unforgettable location
Has to walk through a high and fast flowing river which was a good adventure just to get this cache!
After leaving my muggle friends at the Rock, it was time to head north and now west towards El Questro and get a bit of caching down on the way.
After doing a gorge walk this morning and not having the camper trailer behind I decided to head back to Wyndham to find most of the remaining caches that needed a 4WD.
It was nice to travel in the comport of an airconditioned cruiser.
After doing the old Halls Creek Road in it was time to hit the dirt tracks on the other side of the highway.
A great tree and interesting to be able to look inside of one as well.
Making use of what ever you had back then made for interesting times.
Thanks Bushies2 TFTC.

Found on a day of exploring. Fought my way in through the shoulder high weeds, mindful always where I trod. TFTC
Four of us looked for it for about half an hour. We followed the hint and expected it to be obvious and easy to find, but we just didn't. Bad luck or not there.
In both 1994 and 2014 when we travelled between the Gibb River Road and Wyndham, it was along the Karunjie Track. This year it was closed between Diggers Rest and the GRR so we were forced to use the highway, thus missing the caches.
Pa was wanting to check out likely fishing spots from Parry's Lagoon, so I jumped in the car and managed to find the 4 caches on the Track.
This was #3 and the most difficult. The area had an incredibly good wet season this year, so just getting to GZ was frustrating. Once there however it was a quick find and after adding my name to the log I replaced the cache where I found it.

Should be terrain 4, fully in the bush.
Wir jsind zum ersten Mal in Australien unterwegs und sammeln gern mal die eine oder andere Dose, wie auch diese hier. Danke sagen wir allen Ownern für das Herführen und Pflegen.

A quick find and sign shortly after some workers from the local station came through. They has been lighting fires and then keeping an eye on them in case they got out of hand. We passed them on the way out along the road. Thanks to Bushies2 for the cache.
Visiting this massive old boab was amazing. If only it could talk, I'm sure it would have many tales to tell. Nice to see that its been preserved so well over the years. TFTC
After a lovely camp on the King River a quick find in morning. Onto Kimberley stars.

Wow what a massive Boab Tree - would hate to have been locked up in here....
Few mugglers about today but waited till they all left then had a seat to just sit and wonder where this cache could be. Thanks so much for bringing us out to see this.

This one was a must see during our trip. We ventured down this track quite late in the arvo. Headed straight to this site as it was the furtherest point we intended to visit. A massive boab and a great site to see. Took a little while to find cache as I was fixated on the wrong structure. The one that indicated GZ on my GPS. As a last resort thought id check other structures in area and made an easy find there. TFTC and the bringing us here. A favorite for the site.
Out and about and found this one on our way to Wyndham, easy find. I could actually fit in the tree, no snakes today!!
Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for our enjoyment.

As per previous log, found it at other location. Decided to relocate to coordinate (same hide). Hope that's ok. TFTC.
Our GPS was quite off and had us looking in the wrong spot. But geojunior decided to check all similar spots based on the hint we came up trumps. Thanks for all these interesting caches bushies2.
Coords were a little off, but recent log helped. Amazing tree, pity about the artwork.
This was our first stop on our great camping safari in the Kimberley region and where we met brooka13 who later introduced HughMcQ to geocaching. Thanks Bushies2 for the cache and associated history
SNAKE! ooohhhh Snake! oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh its a snaaaaaaaaake!
oh Badger, Badger Badger...
Didn't feel like grabbing this one as there was a snake sitting inside the metal table top.
Thanks anyway for bringing us out here.

Huge Boab and interesting history. Pitty people are still carving their names in it as recently as today given all the shavings on the ground!
Awesome tree. Hard to imagine that people were chained to it in the heat. TFTC!
This was our 1st cache find in a caching run of 9 Finds & 0 DNFs today.
We found it at 10:25 so this now makes our total find count 6974.

Another great day in the Wyndham - Kununurra area. Todays plan was to visit all the caches we missed yesterday.
This cache was the start point for todays run as we thought that it would be the furthest from home base.
It is really sad to see some fresh initials carved into the tree.
[/blue]
Coordinate Accuracy: Excellent (Around 2 metres).
Cache Condition: Container and log book are in good shape.
Took: Nothing.
Left: Nothing.
Thanks Bushies2 for the hunt today.

Today was turning out to be one of the bestest caching days ever, after a long, long day yesterday
Late yesterday afternoon, I finally found THE iconic bush campsite about six kilometres out of Wyndham and spent the night under starry, moonlit skies after a spectacular sunset
I had made plans to head out to Digger's Rest today and see the 'other side' of the Cockburn Range that you don't get to see from the Gibb River Road
Spectacular scenery that just kept getting better the closer I got to the mountains [^]
This boab tree and the cache was just the icing on the cake
A nice easy find in one of about twenty possible places
So TFTC and dragging me out along this wonderfully corrugated, rock strewn road today to see the views [^]
Oh and the return trip was fun.
A few 'touristas' towing caravans, or driving their AWD's were creeping slowly along at about 5kph hoping to make it out to Digger's Rest before nightfall
Don't be fooled by the smoothness of the causeway at the start of this detour people.
The road rapidly deteriorates into a rough outback track !!

Today our trip goes from the Dunham River Rest area to Wyndham, travelling through magnificent Kimberley scenery.
After setting up camp at the caravan park we headed out to do a few caches, returned for lunch then headed out to the prison boab region.
We have seen some amazing boab trees in the Kimberley region, & a few prison trees. Surprised by the number of people out here.
Thanks Bushies2 worth a favourite point

Today epitomized all we love about caching. We got the 4wd off the trailer so we could indulge in what we enjoy most, caching, 4wdriving, bird watching with a bit of history. 19 of 19 today and we called it quits with this one. The road disappeared about 800m from the tree, washed away completely but we were following a local who seemed to know were the road once was so we battled on through huge wash aways and a flooded river. We were rewarded with the spotting of a croc and a cache! Cache was a little battered but we had our repair kitwith us and it is as good as new again. TFTC. NB: at the moment you REALLY need a 4wd to access this cache.
Some muggles right over GZ so headed further down the track and came back to this one. Zip lock bag all ripped and pencil needs sharpening. Need to carry a sharpener! No prisoners taken here. TFTC Bushies2.
Been here twice now didnt realise there was a cache first time around. Thanks for bringing us back here. Tftc
Nice quick find. Tin had fallen down though and we have put it back in what we think is the original location. thanks for the cache.
Found at 4.10pm GAFF1. We saw the prison tree at the other end of the GRR near Derby - seems so long ago now.
Such an isolated spot to hold prisoners.
Thanks Bushies2.

Thanks Bushies2.
A sad part of our history. Couldn't believe that there are people so stupid that they had to carve their names in this historic tree
Very impressive but wouldn't like to be locked up in there. We drove on a bit further and enjoyed the last rays of the sun hitting the Cockburn range. Thanks Bushies2
Thanks to Bushies2 for bringing me to Prision Tree and the cache - nice to revisit it. Loved it. Lots of the touring muggles visited here and the nearby area more than in 1996.
First time found for 10 months and all is good. Mrs Temingi wanted to leave me here locked in the tree. TFTC
Found this one with AvocaTwinkle and Jester Girl. My first FTF. Love the Prison Boab. TFTC Windy-William
Had to be satisfied with Silver on this one but only by a matter of hours. If these trees could talk what tales they could tell.
Thanks Bushies 2
