Found all the plaques, crunched the info, extracted what I figured to be some good looking coordinates. Unfortunately, no sign of a cache when I visited GZ today. Might require checking out by the CO?

02-Apr-18
No luck here today, second visit back too. I had found this previously, but not signed the log, so was coming back to sign and log. From memory, as it was a while ago that I found it, it was a little tricky, but looked everywhere and turned up nothing.

Had time before catching our place back to Auckland, so full of caffeine and determination we went a-hunting... and we found! Rich loved reading all the cricket history. T4tc

Cache # 4,026 - CelloJoss, John the Strong and I made this a mission this morning. Blessed with brilliant sunshine and early enough light to avoid any parking charges, we spent about an hour collecting all the necessary data and making calculations. Had one calculation off, because the first answer (correct, as it turned out) seemed far-fetched. Also got permission from the construction workers to go beyond the barricade and seek out two of the desired plaques for information. Learned a lot about the grounds, and was quite pleased when JtS put their hands on the cache. Been wanting to tackle this one for years, and happy to have it done. TNLNSL TFTC!

Consecutive caching day # 1,655

21-Nov-17
A stroll around the Basin Reserve this morning accompanied by The Wandering Dragons and CelloJos. Did some looking and some calculating and then cache in hand. I don't know how many times I have walked through here and thought to myself "there is a cache about here somewhere" but not got around to collecting the necessary data. Today that all changed. Thanks for the cache.

A tricky mapping challenge which took a few goes to narrow down.

Joined forces with barefootguru to hunt down the cache. We both combed a radius of about 30m before B found it. Fortunately few muggles on a beautiful day.

TFTC!

Had a DNF on this last time. Found the instructions ambiguous so encouraged D to solve and hunt with me. Given the approximate coords we had a wide search area, and I found after 20… which turned out to be the log started by jardisliketardis. TFTC Yeetrees.

Thought I would return to finally get this one - cricket game on today so no good for me again.

Well returned 23/1/2017
Still no cache found!
Had a good look, but no find.

Found with UlmusLynx after several visits to collect info only to be foiled by workers or find the area we needed to visit fenced off. Thank goodness for UlmusLynx's mathematical brain we knew where we were heading. The grounds weren't too busy this morning TFTC

23-Sep-16
Selesi and I collected some info, wernt sure what to do with it, back again to get more. Then determined a likely spot for the cache. Back again but deterred by the barricaded off area. Back today thinking should be clear but still some barricades. Found an opening and selesi and I set out to find the cache. I didnt come up with anything but Selesi was in the right spot. Thank goodness. Enjoyable puzzle despite all the setback. TFTC

Was with the CO when he decided to do a check on the cache. Unfortunately neither of us could locate the container so went back to the car and dug out a replacement from the caching kit. Signed the log before the CO placed the new container back. (Hopefully the old one is actually gone....) Enjoyed the stroll around the grounds discovering all sorts of information. Humm.... I wonder......??

Interesting puzzle! Great to see the special cricketing moments remembered like this.

Gathering the data was straight forward, though the coordinates I recorded weren't too flash - I was relying on my phone. The cache took a couple of attempts to retrieve - the first time the place was just too busy, with contractors doing some sealing and some groups of people hanging around not far away. Today the Wellington cricket team was practicing right over the fence from the nearest plaque. To keep out of their way I went back to the second nearest plaque and did a projection to get some new coordinates, which took me right to GZ. Found something interesting - clearly camo, then searched a bit more and there was the container. TFTC, +FP.

Finally! The blue teardrop is now a smiley face! It took Chainsaw Pete's caching nous to ferret this one out, after I had tried several times but failed. Yay! I can't tell you how pleased I am to knock this one off! Tftc and the interesting history. I walk through the Basin quite often so have had many opportunities to reflect on the information and possible hiding spots.

28-Aug-15
Took a bit of effort but we found it in the end. Paid to have Owhiro Ray (who understands coordinates) and Faith 4560 (who understands cricket) with us on this one. TFTC all in good condition.

22-Feb-15
I had to have a couple of innings to solve this one. My first visit I found the plaques OK and took photos for later solving, but I failed to record the coordinates at each location so had to rely on Google (and EXIF info with dubious accuracy). I managed to derive an area of interest which failed to turn up results on a subsequent visit. While I was in the area a couple of weeks back, picking up a mystery final, I recorded new coordinates for each of the plaques for later projections and did come up with a similar final to my previous attempt. I had plenty of time this morning for searching the area but I was still empty-handed. I resorted to going back to the nearest plaque and performing the projection again. It gave me a new area to search and soon I had the cache in hand. Certainly not as quick as Brendon McCullum, but the result was the same. TFTC

I suspect Yeetrees has bowled me a googly as I am out for a duck on this one. I've retreated to the dressing rooms for refreshments, but will return to the crease for a second innings.

07-Nov-14
Finally!! this one has been a nemesis cache for us, not sure why tho... obtained the numbers then tried to go fancy on working where the cache was which got us thoroughly confused. should have just taken a step back. resorted to brute force searching without the final coordinates and after a shortish search managed to find the cache! TFTC and TFTP is good to finally knock this one off!! Smile

As Wellington played Auckland on a not so bright Sunday morning we made our way to GZ and did some unobtrusive looking and figuring. Despite the important provincial cricket match being played out there were all of about a dozen muggles present in different positions and poses, plus two cricket teams of course!
After a little bit of tooing and froing we finally came up with the cache in its clever disguise.
Cache in order, log signed, all safely re-hidden, just as found. We enjoyed this cache, good history and an excuse for a visit to the hallowed ground. A well done caching experience all round.

Rain stopped play yesterday and my paper notes turned to paper mache. Fairly certain we were starting to search in the right spot, but as I was the only one with a raincoat in the team we headed to the clubhouse for afternoon tea. Confirmed our GZ with an EAF and started the second innings today. Amazingly the first location I investigated yielded the cache. TFTP

Had been at the Basin earlier today to collect the required numbers.
Due to the weather I decided to take them home and perform the calculations in some comfort.
When the opportunity presented itself to head back to the area in the evening, I quickly jumped at the chance.
Didn't bother to take the GPSr with me, but luckily I took 1Dog.
He picked up the object that I had discarded, and showed me the cache.

We enjoyed our visit to the Basin and checking out the plaques. I did not know they were there and they contain some interesting information. The recent test series against England might provide some new statistics for another plaque! We gathered up the required info and then the fun started. We are not too good with waypoint projection but our rather inaccurate methods pointed us in the right direction and after a short search and some head scratching, soon came up with the goods. TFTC.

Howzat ! Found after two laps of the Basin, and then zooming in to the final location eventually. Great to see the history of the Basin captured in the plaques around the ground. TFTC.

29-Oct-12
Was down here for the first time since the Rugby World Cup (Scotland had the ground to themselves then) and thought I'd have a go without the GPSr as I'd worked through the puzzle steps months ago which gave a preety good idea of where the GZ was. Imagine my surprize when I happened upon something looking ever so slightly out of place.... and there it was. A very well produced puzzle and the co-ords were bang on. Worth a FAV. TFTP

#2801

This turned into quite a lengthy cache hunt, three or four laps of the ground and eventually a long chat with the grounds staff.

I wasn't entirely sure what was required of this cache but by the end of the first lap I sort of had an idea. The trouble was there was no concurrence in the next WP.
A second lap checking up on the numbers and being more accurate with the bearings and I had a concurrence of three. However the trouble was there was nothing obvious there and the final offset took me into an even more barren area! Still I looked long and hard but found nothing.
A final lap checking on the bearings and distances and having realised an error in one of the clues I now had a concurrence of four.
Sat at where the final location WP said it should be and was projecting the new offset, when a member of the ground staff wander up.

"Are you looking for that capsule thing?"

In part of the renovation process they'd discovered the cache and wondering what it was all about looked it up on the internet. They were curious what the whole geocaching was all about and it would seem that I was the first cacher they'd managed to catch up with and talk too. They had seen quite a few folk wandering round checking the plaques but they hadnt stuck around.
I had a long chat with them about caching and generally "bigged up" this particular cache. I think the fact that I was English and had come all this way to look for it may or may not have leant some weight.

They produced the capsule from the office and showed me where they'd found it during the renovation, so we replaced it and I took a photo and a bearing which didnt tie up with the hint.

I'm not sure whether I've signed the right cache log, the last signee was August 2011 which ties up with the online log.

Thanks for a really great cache and an innovative way of getting to the final part, I may just have to borrow this idea when I get back to the UK.

A favourite point for sure.

Finally got to dip the Jolly Cricketer TB, along with some other trackables.
The attempts to dip him had been thwarted by various factors, first he got himself injured and a substitute was flown in from England, then the playing field was declared out of order by the referee owing to the wickets having been stolen.
There may be some problems for those attempting to do the multi as there are works going on in the Reserve, I could not go left when entering from the Kent Terrace end though you can get right round if you go right, and there was a big pile of dirt near the Kent Terrace entrance. I was not in a position to go round all the waypoints to check whether or not any of the plaques are buried or not, but even if they are not now it appears possible they will be at some stage.
New hide seems quite good, and not many muggles to contend with today.

Have replaced the cache in a more appropiate location - enjoy

And - yes this spot is definiely more harder to get to as it is definitely muggle cental

15-May-12
In view of my log and tmann421's an owner check definitely appears to be needed.
Incidentally the stand has been yellow stickered http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/6826888/Basin-cricket-tests-at-risk-if-stand-not-fixed : I would have thought that would mean that the museum would be unable to operate, but I am not aware of anything saying that is the case.

11-May-12
Spent well over an hour on this one without any find. The drizzle didn't help and I left the area quite wet and disappointed. I do struggle with bearings at times though!

16-Apr-12
I called in to give the Jolly Cricketer TB an innings by visiting this cache.

Looked for the cache where I found it last time, though I am not sure it was correctly placed then and it got muggled afterwards. But if that was the correct spot it's been hit for a six, the area has had quite a bit done to it since then.
As there has been no play for about 8 months could the groundsman please check whether the wicket is in order? Thanks.
PS Though I haven't seen any official confirmation of overnight closure, if it has been implemented the 24/7 attribute would no longer apply.

They are going to start closing the Basin Reserve off at night shortly- not that I would dare go inside there at the specified times even if it WAS open! http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/5209763/Basin-Reserve-will-be-closed-at-night

Finally hit a six at the Basin - after visiting more times than the Black Caps in one season - with a little help from my new coach.
Had been on the late shift at the DomPost when news of last night's arson attacks came through, but my worries that I'd be unable to access the grounds today were unfounded - though the place did smell strongly of burnt toast.

01-Jun-11
Swung by a few days ago and took photos of the plaques so I could solve the puzzle at home. Puzzle answers seemed good to go, so I did some reconnaissance on the way home from work but gave up after a 10 minute search due to fading light and too many muggles. Thought about it a bit harder overnight, double-checked my figures and went back early this morning. Success! A very cheeky hide, Yeetrees. Thanks for bringing this one back on line. TFTC!

All the reading about special times at the basin and wandering around this cache was great- especially as I was there at there in the crowd for a couple of the events recorded in the plaques. After gathering the infomation, the hunt for the cache went well until I found the container ...and it was empty. (my old GPX file in my GPS didn't/couldn't tell me this one had been recently disabled). Reading back through the logs on line afterwards and it all makes sense but the owner has been kind enough to let me log a find. Thanks for my most enjoyable disabled cache to date. I highly recommend this to others - when it is active again.

Logged with the permission of the owner.

28-Mar-11
I am sure I put the thing back in its hiding device! But I was concerned that it was a bit exposed. I guess in hindsight it might have been a good idea to draw the attention of the owner to the potential for it to be muggled, though the hint did indicate it was supposed to be visible- maybe there was more cover at one time or it was supposed to be more hidden than it was when I found and replaced it? To be honest I thought there was a risk the whole thing would be hit for a six and was wondering what would happen if security spotted it and didn't know what it was......

27-Mar-11
Disabling for the time being, have to create a new hiding spot

26-Mar-11
D'oh! How did we miss the plaques last time! Took us a bit to narrow down the search area, then StreetWalker spotted something that may have been the cache camo, but nothing was inside. Photo sent to owner to verify it was indeed the cache, who has kindly permitted us to log the find.

#2089 (well actually 2080, but I'm not going back to renumber the other finds). The plaques were blindingly obvious this time; don't know how we missed them last time. One set of data got us in the right area, and and a second narrowed the search further. Eventually we found what we thought was the container the cache had been hidden in (but was now empty), so took a photo and sent it to the owner, who confirmed we had found the right container, and gave us permission to log. TFTC.

We went for a wander around the boundary, but I think we should have been outside the cricket ground as there were no plaques with the information we required where we walked (we took the word boundary in the cricket sense).
Wasn't a wasted trip as enjoyed my first visit to the ground, and it wasn't raining!
Next time we are in the area.....

23-Dec-10
First innings concluded some time ago but bad light stopped play, so match was recommenced today. A short second innings, ball hit the target though with one or two wides early in the innings. Interesting hide.
I always smile a little when I come to the Basin Reserve as there used to be a sign "please keep off the ground" shame I haven't got a photo, it could have gone in the museum!
3P Passport from a class in Alberta, Canada came with me, they will be getting quite acquainted with cricket because they also virtually visited with me at Bryan Heath Park.

A lunch time visit and thinking this was a straight forward multi/puzzle I didn't even bring the gps just my phone - oops soon realised it might be useful to have a real GPS device. Visited all 4 spots as we had spare time and hadn't really twigged as to what would be required once we had the numbers. With the info collected we worked the numbers back at the hospital and then popped back later while Mum was having an ecg. Co-ords proved to be spot on for an instant find in the first place checked. Great wee cache and a good way to finish this visit to the capital. Thanks for the effort that went into this one and your other placements. Off home tonight and Mum should hopefully be home on Monday. +/- coin

04-Jul-10
We were at a birthday party across the road from the basin. So after the cutting of the cake, we wandered over to have a look for the cache.
One of the plaques was a bit dirty and worn and we misread one of the numbers at first, but apart from that we had no problems.
A nice location on a sunny day like today.
Thanks.

Found with nzcoozer. Some interesting cricket history at a place which Mrs W.E.K.A. last visited in 1966 to receive her Queen's Guide Award, after which she walked up to Government House for afternoon tea. One of the plaques was rather dirty which made it a bit hard to read. A nicely hidden cache in a very public place. TFTC

Had a lovely walk around the Basin, reading all the plaques and getting all the answers. We had no idea what to do with the answers once we had them mind you. Maybe we'll have to go back to the old pen and paper for this one. Paperless caching doesn't seem to be particularly robust for these massive multis. We shall return - maybe next month.

Came here yesterday for my first innings but quickly got rained out. Before ducking for cover I grabbed a waypoint and a photo at each plaque, so was able to calculate an accurate GZ coordinate set later at home in comfort. There was lots more information than was needed, but it was interesting and provided a good confidence check. Back this afternoon in better weather for the second innings and to claim the prize- had it in hand in less than a minute. Signed log, thanks for an interesting and different cache.

3TF and #300. The day lightened enough and the dry spells lengthened enough for the umpires to lift the covers and allow play to start again. A few curve balls were bowled, sight-screens moved and many boundaries hit. Because of the reduction in overs due to the weather, the Duckworth-Lewis method had to be employed to resolve who had won the test. Sure enough, the mathematics soon pointed to a winner, and suddenly the trophy was in hand - awarded to -gonefishing- for bringing up his triple century here - surely a ground record!
Thanks for the interesting history and fun lesson in urban camo.

That Yeetrees bowls a bouncer on a regular basis. Miserable day where the covers were drawn and rain stopped play. Having solved the puzzle a quick rummage on the boundary attempting to catch the cover drive was less than successful and I was replaced by the twelfth man. The umpire waved his arms relentlessly and a six was added to the score. The watching muggle in the shelter of the pavillion was a distraction and an eventual appeal to the umpire and a discussion about the LBW resolved the decision regarding middle stump being skittled. Dive for the catch came up short but wet weather allowed a slide to the boundary and managed with replay to nab the very clever catch. Cheers Yeetrees, another well constructed game of cricket. TFTCSL left secure and remarkably dry despite the conditions.

Won the toss and Big Grin Happy Days Big Grin FTF !!!!!!. Didn’t get the chance to attend the first days play on this test yesterday. Went early this morning to gather the required information and check on pitch conditions. Went away and worked on a solution during the lunch break. Got an outcome that looked like it was worth an appeal to the Umpires. So returned during the afternoon session today to try my luck at the crease, as the weather forecast looked like play on day three could be washed out. Found the cache before bad light stopped play. A good puzzle and a great hide. yeetrees bowls a mean googly, even with the co-ords I worked out it took a little looking fo to find, took in a Firebirds net practice as well. SL TFTC

Remember the basin well, attended WBC across the road in the 60's and spent many art lessons sitting on the bank "sketching" (aka watching) Ran out of time to completre today before dinner engagement so raced around basin and photographed the plaques to solve at leisure. No whites or bat or ball but didn't look out of place from those lolloing around on the grass. Managed a quick stop to grab Wakefield Memorial. TFTC
