Found amongst the ice and snow! Very nice and dry on the inside. Was about 5m from where my GPSr said. Took the travel bug.
So we decided to go to Rangi hut for an overnight stay with Poppa and Mum. We checked online and saw there were a number of caches on the way. After checking the online logs we packed a few spares to take with us as some caches looked like they might need some help.We found the tramp to be pretty and scenic, we especially enjoyed the waterfall. The caches were a great way to break up the tramp. After getting comfy in the hut we headed out to find the two close by caches. This cache found ok. Opening the container we found it to be very damp. One log was wet and not usable and the other was damp. As we were staying overnight we took the wet cache back to the hut as we had the fire going (very old that night). We dried everything out and signed the log. Put in a trackable and rehide it back the next morning. This was our first historic geocache. It is great to see the Geo-community maintaining the cache and keeping it going.
Found on a chilly but clear morning after overnighting at the Rangiwahia Hut. I spotted a fairly obvious geotrail that led me straight to the cache. All well here. Thanks for bringing me up here! TFTC

Nice to be able to grab a second cache at the top with the junior TFM before a much needed rest. TFTC.

After lunch I'd believed this would be another big trip but was a sub-200m trip and that was welcome as it was surprisingly cold up here, no wind though. Nice and easy and after finding a number of different logs in the cache I signed the two driest and replaced as found. I reckon this oldie is under snow regularly, but that's all good. This is my fifth oldest cache to date - yay!
I have been hankering to do this walk to 'Rangi Hut' since before we lived in Kimbolton and moved away 8 years ago to pursue our adventure of living and moving house in NZ. It wasn't as far as I'd originally thought and walk times of 1 hr 35 to the hut from Renfrew Road end (up) and 1 hr 5 mins back from hut to car (down) were pleasant, and reasonable.
An upsetting week with the loss of one of the stalwarts of the UK side of the family passing away on Thursday morning, UK time. A weekend of reflection, respect and a few chances to get out into the great NZ outdoors to clear the head was gratefully accepted. Saturday I had to head into Palmy to buy a new funeral suit (my old one had 'shrunk' somehow), and catch up with my son and a walk alongside the Manawatu river whilst remembering 'Grandad'. Sunday entailed a trip up to Rangiwahia hut with my daughter who had travelled down from Auckland.
Thanks to all CO s for their hides.

Found walking back from the Mangahuia lookout. Trackable still in place. TFTC
Today's target - one of New Zealand's oldest caches. Yeti and I are quite chuffed to have at last made our way up here to find it. Nice easy find too.
We did discuss taking Deadmans back to the car park but not this time. Last time I camme up here I went over the top and dropped into Iron Gate Hut and so have yet to take the Deadmans track out. Next time, maybe. Went back to the hut and had lunch, admired the artwork on the toilets. (What's with the white birds on the log with the whio heads?)
Heading up to Rangi and back with YetiNZ for a simple day walk to get one of New Zealand's oldest caches. Man, has this track changed since I was last here, maybe 25 years ago. There was no slip then, and no formed wooden fronted steps. The great views are still there, as is the interesting approaches to the bridge.

Some time (years) ago I set myself a goal of getting the top ten oldest (still active) caches in the North Island for the Old School Challenge, GC325CX. Todays goal was my 9th find on this list, GC34F. I left Wellington at 05:30 (avoiding the typical weekend traffic issues) for a 09:00 start from the Rangiwahia track carpark where, after a discussion about this at an event last weekend, The Seagnoid would be joining me for the walk. Cyclone Fili passing through the country during the week caused me some concern but the weather gods smiled and today was a stunning Easter Friday day, perfect conditions for caching.
And here it is, the target of the day. Just over twenty one years since it was placed, and still hanging in there. Despite my complaining and frequent requests for a stop we made it with no issues (except perhaps for The Seagnoids boots threating to de-sole). Amazing views and well worth the effort. A little bit of water in the outer container, but log was all good inside multiple layers. TFTC.

Decided to head up to the Ruahines for a walk to Rangiwahia hut. Taking the backcountry roads to get there and collecting whatever caches I can along the way. Arrived after lunch and still had time to collect all the caches up to the hut followed by an hours side trip to the Secret tarn. About 4 hours all up. The hut was pretty busy, 8 people. Thankfully they stayed at the hut and I wandered off to find the cache undisturbed. Thanks for the smiley.
I've had this one on the radar for several years so was very pleased when my hosts in Palmerston North suggested we come up here The weather was sunny and calm which made for perfect conditions Sadly the mountains were hidden by the distant cloud and haze
The cache was easy to locate Emptied some water from the outer container and let it dry in the sun. Log was nice and dry
Thanks to those who look after this old one. Definitely a favourite

Apologies for the late log but only just realized this cache hadn't been logged when clearing out the Garmin GPSr. Thankfully the find date was recorded and we have photos from the overnight tramp.
On the way up to Rangi hut for an overnight stay with one of the Jr. Cachers and some friends during Wellington Anniversary long weekend. Popped out after dinner to head up to GZ and make the find and enjoy the view. TFTC.

Found, difficult as you haf yo go off of the path to find it. Great walk. Tftc.
Woohoo, now have 7 out of the 10 oldest caches in Aotearoa! Really worked for this one, climbing some 150 floors over 1½ hours from Renfrew Road. The paths are metre deep runnels at the top, wouldn’t want to be up here in winter! Passed 2 other parties on the way up. Thanks for the old one!
It's supposed to be raining this long weekend. Awoke at 6AM and saw through the skylight it's cloudy. Oh well it'll be raining soon so I'll just lie here in bed some more...
A few hours later it's all blue sky through same skylight, so I better get up. The plan today was to grab GC34F Ruahine - hence the need for 'reasonable' weather.
And so I finally arrive at the trail head a bit after 12.
It was 18 March when I last attempted this day trip. On that occasion I stupidly, unfortunately, locked the car keys in the Santa Fe, and by the time I'd got them back (long story) it was too late in the day (and I had a smashed quarter-light window) to attempt the trip.
Today I was extra careful and all together I set off [:0]
Found 2.5 hours after leaving the car. Loved every part of this walk... the track, the trees, the views, THE bridge, and the geocaches along the way. Especially this geocache. Thank you for keeping it going these last 19+ years. Good too, to see a realistic D/T rating
Then it was back to the hut for lunch, and return to the car (which took just over an hour).
**A wonderful trip. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.
This hike contributes to my qualification for the GC2XBA7 Rambler's Reward Challenge Cache, Dunedin**

Thanks manawatu for placing this classic cache almost 20years ago!!
Thanks also to TwigNZ and pgcnz for keeping it alive after a good samaritan removed it last year
After a lovely sunset and convivial evening in the hut I awoke to freezing, windy and wet conditions... A hunter and dog returned 0700 - she was demoralised from 2hours on the exposed tops and I consoled her that I too had not found that for which I was hunting either
It was a freezingly cold clagged-in morning which had us all back in our sleeping bags til after 9am until caching fever took hold again and I headed out with the lovely lass's hunting dog Basil for company.
First I tracked down edverns cache and got myself fairly moisturized within 10minutes... then up to GZ for this old cache where Basil waited at a respectable distance while I did the honours.
I'm pleased to report the cache is still in great condition and may now last another 20years in this fairly hostile environment !!
All in all it was a great tramp despite the cold and wet weather - I'll be keen to do it all again in a year or two!

Lovely day at the top, on day 1 of level 2 following Covid 19 lockdown. Wonderful views. A lunch stop at the hut verandah and outdoor table, with a few other parties- all keeping their social distance, enabled me to venture to find this cache. Cache all dry. Log signed and returned as found. TFTC
Out on a day trip from Wellington with the intention of finally ticking of Ruahine (GC34F) and completing the requirements for the Old School Challenge. This was a very enjoyable walk up the hill with the exception of a chunk of anxiety as I navigated the narrow bit above the slip. At this point I had decided to do the loop walk rather than come back across this section of track. To this I made it as far as the high point past the Triangle Hut junction before strong winds and threatening cloud had me turn back. All in all, a great walk that I am glad I have done
A quick find to tick off another oldie. TFTC

I wanted to do the walk to Rangi Hut over the school holidays and find the four remaining caches. All were found so a successful day!
This old cache had been top of my list to find. When I heard it had been muggled, I was very disappointed. Then the news that it was being returned by TwigNZ and pgcnz. Thank you both, and the others involved, for this. A quick find and then return to the hut for a rest and something to eat. Has become my oldest find!

Replaced the container in its correct location with TwigNZ. It's all ready to be found again! Thanks also Etherlord Clan for renewing the log etc. Replaced with some fresh camo to hopefully help avoid another accidental CITO! Great to find this historic cache.
I had heard a lot about the beauty of the tramp to be had up to Rangiwahia Hut from friends who have done that walk previously, and had wondered about how I might manufacture a chance to go and experience it for myself. So when I heard that GC34F had been Muggled but that the cache had not been lost but was available to be replaced then I was delighted to volunteer to go and put it back in place.
Also answering the call was PGCNZ, so he and I made plans to meet up in Palmy and get the old container before heading off to the trailhead. We took it upon ourselves to add a little camo tape and an official Geocaching label to the lid of the container to hopefully help prevent any future muggling from well intentioned tidy Kiwis.
Having finally arrived at Rangiwahia Hut after a very nice and leisurely 2 hour walk, we were able to enjoy some great views (in spite of a bit of cloud cover) and take some refreshments before walking to GZ to locate the correct spot to place the cache. Both our GPS's agreed that it should be "there" which was great as it also matched perfectly with the Hint, so having signed the log we placed the container and used a rock or two on it to help disguise it a little better.
Thanks to Etherlord Clan for supplying the extra new logsheet for future longevity (fingers crossed) of this cache, and for the chance to make this trip and helping to make my day memorable. Sorry you couldn't be with us in person today.

On a caching adventure with gorby to find this cache
Its taken a couple of hours, but what an amazing track. It has it all, just stunning. As we approach the cache, the first few drops of rain can be felt. The dark clouds are forming, the rain that was predicted is on its way.
Following the path, we make our way to the cache. Love these cookie time buckets, surprised how popular they once where for hiding caches
The log book is signed, and a mini celebration had.
We had made it! (was it 3 hours up, 1 1/2 hours down?)
The layers are going back on, the temperature is dropping, its getting cold. Time to get a move on, the caching chariot awaits. Have the umbrella out, as the rain is getting heavy.
Another great adventure, thanks manawatu for the hide and bringing us here.

Ok, finally me and rusty have made it up the ominous hill, very steep but we are no quitters, we take it all in our stride and just go for it! 3 hours up and 2 hours down. This cache is the reason we came here today. Obviously there have been many bonuses, with the gorgeous weather, the stunning scenery, awesome bridges, other caches along the way etc and not to mention great company with my little caching buddy rusty! She is a great asset when you feel like giving up, she spurs you on to do a little bit more!
So after a great feed at the hut, I made us some super fine sandwiches (even if I say so myself) we decided to get stuck in, the temperature dropped quite drastically and so came here quickly and got the cache signed. I'm a little more worried than rusty since I never even bought along a jersey and it's about to rain! OK... got to move...

Success on our mission to get one of the caches needed for the North Island Old School Challenge. Collected this one after lunch in the hut, the last 10 minutes on the track was very cold with a bitter wind and ice on the track. Fortunately the snow around the cache was not too deep to find the cache. TFTC
#9960. A good day rambling up the Rangiwahia Hut Track in Ruahine Forest Park. Great to find this cache that has been hidden here for over 17 years. GZ was all quiet when we visited. Quick find. The cache was in good condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Recently, my boss suggested that I have a look at grabaseat sales, so I ended up with flights to wellington again! I decided to make a very focused approach to the two oldest caches in the North Island I have not found yet, Waiohine Gorge to get to T-2 on Saturday, and then Ruahine on Sunday. The Saturday ended up much more adventurous than expected, and I was pleased to still have energy for the Sunday drive and the walk. Nice track to follow, and not many people around! And awesome to find the cache, especially after a dnf on T-2 yesterday. I was very tempted to continue around the loop, would have been feasible thanks to the long daylight hours, and even had a torch just in case - but I did not fancy the long drive back to my temporary bed too late. Just as well, because when i got to the car after a nice stroll back in the sun, I heard a massive thunder, and turned around to see the black clouds above the tops. Maybe next time! TFTC!!
Good find on a very chilly evening. Lots of snow and ice about. Hut crowded but nice and warm. Much better with the new fire here. Cache all good. TFTC
Me and Scoria came out here to do the cache in trash event (CITO) the the event at the hut at the top of the hill
With the CITO over it is now time to head on up the hill to the next event collecting caches on the way up to the top of the hill were the hut sits
Thanks for the events

Came up here on a beautiful day with a group of geocachers, in order to find a few, and attend an event. Once at the top, we had a quick bite then slipped off to find this one. Amazing views up here, and a nice hut. Thanks for placing this cache here all those years ago.. I had to laugh at the original contents containing a Floppy Disk! Unfortunately the disk was long gone, but nice that the cache was still here.
Found with Infoferret (who is only just getting around to doing my logs, thanks Mum!)
Made the trip up the valley for the CITO and event. Took longer than I was expecting so am glad I left early enough. Didn't realise that there were new caches released as part of these event so that was a nice bonus. Plus the joint FTF's! The weather was perfect for a days adventure. I ended up doing 16kms by the end of the day as I headed up Deadman's track for another cache (my legs are still hurting a day later because of that).
Quick find here as I followed the vague trail to the only spot where i would hide a cache. Well done for keeping such an old cache alive!
Thanks for the caches, the events, the company and the smileys!

Found while up here for A Ruahine Ramble Event at Rangiwahia hut on a lovely sunny Sunday. It is good to find another very old cache Thanks manawatu for the cache and for keeping this cache going.
23 April 2017 13:05. This historic cache has been on my to do list almost since I started caching! With an event organised, I could no longer resist, and convinced GSEL to accompany me (with the grumpy lads, sorry). After the event, we signed the log and managed to get back to the car by 2.25, just too late to get back to Wellington for the lad to get to the thing that he wanted to go to. Many thanks for placing this in such an amazing location, and to all who have maintained it over the years, . TFTC
#3956. Yee-ha, finally got up here to bag this old and distinguished cache. One of the five oldest remaining caches in the North Island and needed for the North Island Old School Challenge (GC325CX). Would have made a great cache number 4000 for me but life is seldom that perfect. This was my first time tramping in the Ruahines. Infoferret and her two sons arrived at 7am outside my place in Wellington and then it was a three hour, 15 minute drive north to reach Renfrew Rd. Had a lovely clear, sunny and calm day for climbing up the track to reach the hut. Certainly burnt off a few calories on the way. Some mountain goat sections on the path but what a stunning view once at the GZ. The event organised by rattll today was started when we arrived. Great to see so many had made it up here in the stunning autumn weather. After lunch we headed over here to find the cache. IF's brood made the quick find. Then it was time to sign, snap a few photos and replace where found. Awesome. Thanks for the cache manawatu. Favourite awarded.
A fantastic adventure up to the cache during an event. We began the day at 7am leaving from Hastings to join everyone for the climb up to the cache. Gorgeous views and lots of little adventures along the way. TFTC
Absolute cracker day. in the area for a car park CITO and a meetup at the hut. After having lunch and chatting to the other caches D6NZ and myself headed over to collect this cache before heading back down the track. the yellow lid appears to have faded into a shade of red but no trouble locating by following the hint. Log book a little tired but still serviceable.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Spudnz and I made this find while attending rattll's event. The views were amazing today, sunshine and blue skies. A straightforward find but still had time to appreciate how long this cache has been here. I felt good after our climb up and it was nice to have lunch at the hut before heading back down. I was glad I brought my warm pants and jersey with me cos I started to get cold as my body cooled down after the climb. My first time at a DoC hut.

12:05:00 PM. As I was coming out here to catch up with family I did a search for caches to help our Jasmer challenge and this one popped up. I asked my brother if he was up for a hike and off we went on a beautiful day. Was a great hike up and the scenery amazing. It took us about 2 hours to get up there with photo and rest stops. Found the cache easily and ended up signing the old log then found the new one and signed that as well. Went back down and checked out the hut and had a rest before tackling the other cache here as well. My brother was disappointed we couldn't get a helicopter to take us back. Love the hike and on our way down couldn't believe the number of people heading up. Was a lot busier that I thought it would be. Thanks manawatu for the cache.
today is the day, weather looking good, after talking with dad about 9pm the night before we were going to head up to find the two caches up this way.
we were leaving at 8am turns out we don't get there until about 10.30am due to a whole heap of things, at least today there is a little wind and I was able to keep the hoodie on all day.... well it really is all up hill and the only person we bumped into was a hunter who had been up deamans track with his son and dog.
we finally made it to gz (it took us like 3hours as we stopped and looked at many things tried the leaves (cant remember the name starting with H) that are meant to taste like pepper..... its not true it was just hot , I dont know why we tried them I think we were expecting it to taste like normal pepper, interesting fungi and and waterfall that looked really good on our way back.
so to the cache... lucky there is another pencil so didnt need to go back to the other cache thanks for the placement gets a fav from us took us 1.25h to get back, enjoyed a well earned soak in the bath.

It was a successful walk up to the hut today with SiderosNZ. We made good time and enjoyed the views. We did the two caches up here and ate lunch at the hut before setting off back down.
This was a straightforward find, and as described on the cache page. However, despite being inside another container in the bucket, the log was quite damp and difficult to sign. TFTC

I first tramped to Rangi hut way back in 2006... when the track was a lot more tricky to get up here. Returning now with fanfan-77 and it's great to see the improvements made. It's forcast rain for the morning but we have the hut to ourselves and are keen for the walk back down deadmans track anyway. Great to see an old cache still in play. Lid was off when found but cache dry enough. Signed and replaced lid firmly. TFTC
This was our main target activity for our New Year's break in the Manawatu. Sveppi has been talking up this loop walk and this hut for years. We were expecting a 2.5-3h walk up here based on her past experience and the fact that we are not all that fit at carrying an overnight pack. Set off from the car just after 1PM and surprised to find we get to the hut in about 2h, in spite of a couple of stops to take pictures.
The day is cloudy and it's been threatning to rain but the only dampness on us as we arrive is our own sweat as it's been pretty muggy! We drop the packs at the hut then set off to check out he views (or lack thereof!) and grab the 2 caches in the area. This cache was our main goal being such an oldie. It was found easily by sveppi who was ahead of me. Lid was off but somehow cache was pretty dry inside. Re-hid with lid tight. The next morning we carried on through the dead man's track to complete the loop in spite of the fact we knew we were going to get very wet. Didn't fancy the short and easy way down: if we make it this far, might as well go the whole way! TFTC

At World’s End – New Zealand – One of our dream become true.
Our plan was to stay 4 weeks in New Zealand. But this wasn’t this easy to manage at work. So we moved spontanic the plan from march to november. We informed us before about point of interessts. The list was this long so we decided to go by campervan from the north to the south to have the most mobility. We arrived after way to much hours in Auckland and started there our round trip. At first we enjoyed the area in auckland and the north. In Waitomo we were able to see and enjoy glohworms in one of the famous caves. But this area had a lot of nice hiking trails were we could discovered the Piripiri Caves, Natural Bridge and the Marokopa Falls. This was already impressive to see and still the beginning of our adventure for life. The trip went on over Okere Falls Scenic Reserve direction Rotorua. In this area we enjoyed each hour, because each corner was different. We visited the Haumurana Springs – what amazing water -, Blue Lake and Green Lake and relaxed in Kerosene Creek. We liked all the water and in our travel guide we found a hike cloth to the Huka Falls, which ofcourse we did as well. All this flowers were bloom. One oft the Highlights was Wai-O-Tapu. The weather was perfect and all this colors awesome and the geysir a nice shower. By Campercan the to tour went on direction Tongariro Alpine with a short stop at Orakei Korako and the Tongariro River Loop Track. Lu like nice hiking tours and what could be the best for her birthday? Of course the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We started early in the morning and walked approximately 9 hours over gras, stones, snow and colorful water. Now we had to leave the Heart of North New Zealand and went over Taranaki Falls to the East Coast with the goal Napier. The weather was cloudy and often raining but a small sightseeing was a must have. The last stop on the North Irland was Wellington. But it was only raining and some streets were already flooded. That’s why we change spontanic our plan and only did the First Cache of New Zealand and went by ship over the Marlboro Sound to Picton. We went over Farewell Spit to the lonely Wharariki Beach with sea lions. On the way back to the big streets we stopped at Waikoropupu Spring and Janie Sesson Shipwreck and drove untypical to Karamea. In Germany we do not have this much and public caves and that’s way we enjoyed this area! Cloth to the West Coast we took a look at the Pancake Rocks. The weather was just raining and so we could not see the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, but we still visited them. We leaved the bad weather in the hills and enjoyed the Sun at Ship Creek, Thunder Creek, Fantail Falls and the Blue Pools. Wow they were relly blue and this clean and deep. I never saw something similar before. About Wanaka we read a lot in our travel guide and looked forward to it. There arrived we visited the Puzzling World and walked around the sea. Queenstown the next town we drove just through because at this time there was a marathon and it was really campervan unfriendly. So we used the time and drove to Milford Sound and enjoyed the hills surround us on the water. I never felt this small. After we are landed again on land the trip goes on to the Chasm and Clifden Caves and the Clifden Suspension Bridge. Wow what an adventure. At the end we visited a few cities like Bluff, Duneding, Moeraki Boulders and Christchurch were our Trip sadly ends.
At all this places we looked for nice and unique caches which shows us places which we never would had seen without. We enjoyed the nature and wildlife each day and it was really an adventure for life. At the end we drove approximately 5000 kilometeres and felt this relaxed.
Thanks to all owners for placing this caches and this much informations which we got about the particular areas. This was an adventure for life for us. Thanks for this beauty time.

Found this on the 20 august, but forgot to log. Great tobogganing opposite gz. Tftc!
Nice day walk to rangi hut. Still a bit of snow around. Other than sinking in waist deep snow a couple of times an easy find
During our vacation to New Sealand we visited many beautiful places and visited some caches. This one was one of them. The container could be found easily. It was retrieved quickly and logged mugglefree.

Today was a lovely day for a day tramp up to the Rangiwahia hut with a couple of geocachers and a few non-geocachers. Once we reached the hut curtis1915 and I were quickly off to find this cache and the nearby Rangiwahia Hut cache. Both nice and simple finds. This will be my oldest cache find yet, great to see it is still here and still in good condition. Thanks for the cache!
Walked up with friends in the snow to spend the night in the hut, very cold and snowing all the time, found with a bit of digging, tftc.
After running up Deadman's track and over Mangahuia, met the family at the hut. Two year old and I dashed off to find a couple of caches whilst mum fed baby. Nice to find a piece of 'caching history'. At least the rain held off. Tftc, will be back!
Good one Manawatu! Loved our visit to this cache mid-2014, and definitely hope to be back in the not-too-distant future.
I'm the cache owner and it has been a very very long time since I visited it.
It's amazing the amount of visits that this has had over the years and it's incredible that it has lasted so long up there in the elements.
I replaced the red cookie time bucket as the lid was cracked. It could probably do with a new log book so I'll take a new one up there one day, unless someone else does prior.
Thanks for all the visits!

I spent the morning hiking up to Rangiwahia Hut and back again, with the main purpose of my walk being to find this old cache! I made a quick find at GZ. Whilst the lid of the old bucket is cracked, the container inside is doing its job. Great to knock off this old cache, it was a fantastic hike up to here, with great views along the way. Thanks for placing this cache here - a favourite point added!
Found without difficulty but I must report that plastic container which has sheltered the cache for so long is past its use-by date and needs replacing - perhaps the next visitor might like to take a new one in with them?
Easy find on a beautiful blue sky day. It doesn't get any better than this:) thanks!
came up here from Wellington for a day hike to get this cache. thanks for bringing us up here, never been into these ranges. TFTC
Like others, we came specifically for this "old school" cache - currently the 5th oldest still-active cache in the North Island! It was a fantastic trip on an awesome winter day, and well worth the effort. Drove up from Wellington after an early start, and really enjoyed the walk up to GZ ... made a great day-hike. Took about 4 hours, to get up, have lunch and do a bit of cacheing, and then back down to the carpark. Our first time tramping in the Ruahines, and a great introduction. Met some interesting people along the way as well.

Well packaged bag and dry log. Cloud has lifted and evening is cold and still. Enjoying trip to hut with kids and friends. Good to be out in the bush. Fantastic scenery. TFTC
Easily found in the evening after a walk to Mangahuia.
2 inches of water inside but log protected by plastic jar.
Drilled a small hole to drain future rainwater, as lid now corroding and not a tight seal.

Fantastic views on the walk up and at the top on a lovely Manawatu day. An easy find, which was good as the wind was cold here and we were wanting to get to the hut and eat our lunch.
Took us 4.5 hours there and back including finding 2 caches, and lunch break as well as numerous stops for breathers en route.
Great to get another "old school" cache. TFTC.

#7057. On our two week Auckland mega trip last October, we had found the 4 northern old school caches. Prior to that we'd found 4 of the southern ones, so that just left Ruahine and T-2 in order to qualify for the NI Old School challenge. We'd planned to come up and do this cache in November. Although the forecast had been pretty good a day or two earlier, as we drove towards Renfrew Rd the weather closed in more and more, and by the time we got to Renfrew Rd the cloud was very low and it was drizzling, so we baled at that point (but still had a good day finding lots of caches up that way). This weekend the original plan was to do the walk tomorrow, but today the weather was good, and the forecast for Friday was a bit iffy. Not wanting a repeat performance we decided to stay on SH1 all the way to Mangaweka, and to then head for Renfrew Rd. We got to the car park at around 1130. The track proved to be very good, and we were most impressed by the bridge, the tearrain and the views. At GZ the area where the GPSr was taking me to looked unpromising, but I spotted a likely hiding place not far away. Very pleased to have this one off the old school list. TFTC
[We felt the terrain rating of 3.5 for the nearby Rangiwahia hut cache was more accuracte than the rating of 2 for this cache. Those early cachers must have been a tough breed!]

Well worth the walk to visit this cache, fantastic views every you look.

On our way up the ridge at the start of a 5 day tramp. Was keen to visit this old cache as its the last one on the oldest cache challenge to collect, plus its in a great area of the Ruahines.
Cache is in great shape and in an excellent location. TFTC

I'm up here at Rangiwahia Hut on a day trip with some folks from the Manawatu Tramping & Skiing Club.Having found the other cache I'm off to find this one..went straight to it..found the yellow lid to be cracked but in place. The inside container was all good and the contents dry..wrote up the log and replaced..Thanks for the cache!!No view as we were in cloud..but after lunch at the hut the cloud lifted and we got the view!!Thanks!!
Thanks to 1Grunta for the suggestion of trekking up here to gather this "old school" cache as my 1,000th !
It was a very enjoyable walk (even in the drizzle/rain), but given the regular feedback from 1Grunta, I think the terrain rating may be a bit on the low side
A quick search at the top yielded the cache right at the coordinates promised, and it is in tip top condition inside the protective outer cache. We signed and replaced before retiring to the hut and eating a bite.
Be careful of the weather when going for this one - when we left the hut after 20 minutes the wind had come up and the temperature had dropped significantly. It wasn't until we dropped back into the trees that my hands started warming up again.
Roll on the next 1,000 !

The main objective of our trip north today.
Had planned to do 1 @@@@ Kaipororo yesterday to mark Broadbridges 1000th find, but decided the weather wasn't up to it. Made a new plan at yesterday's Event.
Forecast for this part of the country looked better for today.
Little bit wrong there.
Cruised up from Wellington and picked up a few park and grabs on the way to get to the requisite number.
As we arrived at the carpark it started to drizzle.
It got worse the further we went.
Found the DOC Track Workers near the bridge about halfway up - they were packing up and getting out because of the weather.
It had stopped raining when we got to the tops, and we found a little snow along the track, but the wind was starting to get up so that made it very cold.
Broadbridges quickly found the cache, and we hustled into the hut for a sheltered lunch.
Rain was worse when we emerged to get the Hut Cache.
Made short work of that one too, and quickly retreated down the track.
Drizzling again back at the carpark, and sun further on our trip home.
Thanks for bringing us up here, the bridge is very impressive and I would like to come back and stay the night at the hut sometime.

Now this cache was a challenge! There was snow on the track from about the bridge and it got deeper as we got to the hut. After dropping our packs we headed out to find the geocaches, sinking into the snow right up to our thighs in places. We thought we found the right bush but how to get to the cache when it is covered in a metre of snow? And what side of the bush will it be on? The trekking pole disappeared into the snow right up to the handle without sounding like it landed on anything at the bottom. So one member of our group headed back to the hut to get the small spade we brought up with us (we didn't know we would be needing it for finding a geocache). And she started to dig, and dig and dig (the digger we passed back on the track would have come in handy right now!) and would you believe it, the first place she tried she found some red plastic about a metre down. A big more digging and we managed to pull it up out of the snow, sign the log book, replaced it and cover it with snow again. Too hard to cover our tracks here though! A very interesting search - our first in the snow. TFTC
The snow was all gone except for a tiny bit we found under a bush, but it was still very cold at the top. This walk was a good way to spend a public holiday. TFTC
On a day tramp to Rangiwahia hut, seventeen of us - Thursday trampers from the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club. In snow all the way from the car park, about 10cm deep around the hut. Found this one without difficulty in the snow and replaced the inner container as requested by another visitor recently. Logbook and contents were OK. Took the TB. Good to see that this historic cache continues to survive up here, another favourite added.
Dropped off trackable 4k867t before heading up into the cloud to complete the Deadmans Loop. Very windy.
Fantastic spot for a cache- thank you for taking us there manawatu! The first time for Mrs Daywalk, the first time in, um, about 40 years for Mr Daywalk. Getting to be a very fast motorway up now, with only the detour down the big slip through to just past the bridge still a "proper track". Ruapehu had pulled a veil of cloud over himself by the time we got up to the hut, but the rest of the view was superb as we sat on the verandah having lunch. Admired the new toilets with murals. Then went in search of a certain leatherwood tree - how Mr Daywalk misses thrashing through leatherwood down south in Dunedin. A thrill to find such a venerable cache. The new inner screwtop was a bit damp inside - maybe the next person up could arrange a good quality replacement? Read the old logbook with fascination, took photos, left swaps and did some double-bagging. Chatted to the track workers on the way back down. Would encourage everyone to plan a daywalk to this cache next summer- it is a "must do".
Found with byron_nz. What a cool mission! 1.45 hours from carpark to hut (even though DOC sign said 3 hours...and add another 1 for the slip detour...lol). Spent night in hut (full of very messy track workers) and returned via deadmans track. nice easy mission. shame they are trying to fill the place with tourists (making the track into a highway and making a carpark big enough for buses...).
We've been intending to get to this one for a long time now, & today was the day!
Track was well & truly being worked on as we made our way along. Worker muggles everywhere. There was also a helicopter transporting steps, gravel etc backwards & forwards, so not exactly the peace & quiet of the Ruahines we were expecting. We spoke to one guy at the bottom who said they were making a carpark big enough for buses, so they must really be expecting big crowds once the new tracks completed!
Cache was very exposed & easy to spot as you we got near, but I guess it's one of NZ's oldest for a reason - no unruly muggles up here!
Made it back to the car in less than 2 hours, including a leisurely time at the top looking around the hut & facilities, helicopters, mounds of gravel & steps blocking our path etc. It's only going to get quicker & easier as the track gets nearer to completion.
We had a really enjoyable day out - thanks.
Left a pet rock - a panda. TFTC

Now this was quite an adventure. We left at 3pm and started the long uphill walk. Got to the slip after a short puff and pant and then headed upwards clinging to branches and dodging loose rocks until we got to the top of the slip, stopping every 10m to catch our breath. Then across the slip and back down to the path avoiding sliding down on our asses. Then it eased out again. The bridge crossing is very impressive and the last slog uphill to the hut was just slow going with the GPS pointing one direction and our path crossing it from side to side. Reached the top and found the cache easily. Then reversed the route back down. 2 hours up and 1.5 hrs down and some sore thighs and legs after that for the next few days. Great to have this one off the list for the old school challenge. T4TC. Did with buttels
Arrgh! 750m to 1350m in 2hrs. The slip bypass is a real mission on the way up but it's good to see the permanent fix is being built. Really pleased to have this one off the "Old School - North Island" list. Found with Crystal Fairy. TFTC
nice to arrive here after tramping the deadmans loop. Stayed night in hut and had the place to ourselves. Had muggles flying overhead in a glider as i found this cache in my pink onepiece PJ's Imagine i looked quite a site from over head picked up TB Rino
Stopped off on my way around the loop to drop off cincol's Stop Rhino Poaching Travel Bug. It was a fantastic day for a walk.
Checked out the cache while passing and returned the original log book, which I took home to dry out on my last visit to this cache. The new log book is made of waterproof paper and is better left outside the plastic bag to keep it from getting damp and mouldy.
