Darwin to Adelaide Road Trip
Day Eight: Port Augusta and Whyalla
Weather: still sensational!
One of a handful of caches on the FTF Power Trail logged today. I’ve had a couple of previous bites out this series, but still many left to do. No DNFs, good coordinates, and most of the caches are holding up pretty well.
Thanks to all the COs and maintenance angels for giving me an enjoyable afternoon of caching.
It’s officially a mega - GCA1DNA “The Great Leap Forward”

A bit more free time this afternoon so decided to tidy up a few that were missed this morning. TFTC.
Heading over to tackle a few days on Eyre Peninsula with Mattycat and Perfect Di, Day 3 had us exploring around Whyalla, the FITG trail, the Munyarroo CP and any other nearby caches to explore, after a big day we enjoyed a hot meal before heading out for a bit of night caching around Whyalla this was one of them, a quick find by torchlight

We had a great time today driving some of the numerous 4WD tracks around Whyalla. Most.

Tweety2 made the connection as soon as we turned around. It was right where she predicted. Our quickest find for the day so far. TFTC!
Another day of our celebrations of birthday week for the cats, Purrfect Di and Mattycat kept on birthday caching to see what we could unwrap in the way of iron triangle log books. Yours was one we found along the way, with the help of Jack. Good fun time for all and an insight into the impact of mint tins on the aussie steel industry [:o)] Most finds were straightforwad, some were a little obscure, and some were just rusting away!!! A good way to keep fit on a warm day.
So we hit some more of the f t f p t and that took a large chunk of the day! Glad to have that little bit of the map clear now. Some were easily found from the side track and others better from the main road, some were just a little buried, one had two caches with a recent throwdown right by the original! All were a bit of fun to add to our day. Slowly meeting the local cachers by proxy!
Sincere thanks to fishingmad for placing and maintaining this cache on our geo game map
[:o)]
We must note that we certainly do appreciate the way those mint tins age to blend in with the rusty outback earth!!! Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, plastic cracks and mint tins rust!
---
Searching around every day finding and signing using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Whereyougo, Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S20+, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or often with just plain old dumb luck Quite a lot of that actually!!!
*Logs are composed and published using GSAK of course.*
---
Please do stay as safe as possible when caching.
Keep a lookout for bogs, snakes, surprise cliffs, boxing roos, wombats, bulldust, and floods,
try not to get tetanus from rusty mint tins and don't fall out of trees...
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- but especially lookout for bugs from alpha to omega !!! . [xx(]
Try to keep Travel Bugs as the only bugs you share and pass on
Now our borders are open - even more important to sanitise and safely distance!!!
Much appreciation of all those placing quality caches out and about around the countryside,
in sensible safe places especially! - it keeps our game safe, fun, and interesting
[^] [:o)] [^]
A great caching start to Twenty Twenty Too

TFTC. Day 2 of our Whyalla geocaching trip and we decided to tackle the FTF - PT series from Whyalla to Iron Knob.
Having previously completed the Iron Knob end of the trail, it was time to do the rest!
Unless already logged with a “note”, caches and logs were in good condition.
Happy caching and safe travels!

Goal to pick up approx 40. Quite the marathon with muggle husband. This will be a generic post. A couple I couldn’t get lids off or were too wet or no logs. Unfortunately I wasn’t prepared. Was a last minute decision. Thank you for taking the time & placing them. Tftc
Full time nomads since 2014. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.
Back in SA for harvest work. Heading to Port Pirie but 4 days ahead of schedule so a quick detour to Whyalla was in order. There sure is a lot of puzzles here! Glad we had done the solving before arriving in town. Rain overnight meant there was some slip sliding happening as we tackled numerous off road tracks and climbs today. Good Fun in the Geo Cruiser [:o)]

Today was a big day of caching on my bike on the Iron Knob road. Geohusband and the hound were vehicle assisting me in the motor home. It was great for my morning tea and lunch stops. Cycled about 15kms and found about 50 caches for the day.
Finished the day in the city collecting a couple of must do caches and dinner at the pub. Our friends think we are mad having a day of our holidays in Whyalla but they don’t geocache .
TFTC and being a part of this great series.

This weekend, I headed to Whyalla to catch up with a few other Geocachers and attempt some of the trails there. On Saturday, we targeted the FTF power trail from Whyalla to Iron Knob, and then spent the evening and the subsequent morning driving some of Whyalla's back tracks. On Sunday, I visited Cowleds Landing and back north, only to get severely bogged in one of Whyalla's clay pans. I then returned home via the August series.
Today, I joined hevwalker and scramping with our goal to complete the FTF power trail. We got 75% through before taking a break for lunch in Iron Knob, and then completed the remaining geocaches, finishing in the early afternoon. We then visited the new Whyalla circular jetty, and then had dinner at the Eyre Hotel geocaching event. Finally, we headed out for a quick stop at Whyalla Conservation Park, and then headed around the tracks around the levee finding miscellaneous geocaches, all within a nice and balmy evening.
A quickish find at this location. The cache container and logbook were in good shape. Thanks fishingmad for the cache placement and ongoing maintenance.

On hevwalker and our Whyalla holiday.....Davidwazza joined us for a fun day of caching..... with clear skies and warm weather we set off with the aim to do some of the FTF power trail. Our plan was to get as many as possible in the day. My aim was to beat my previous record of 106 in a day.....yes...smashed it thanks to my friends and our quick finds. TFTC
In Whyalla with scramping on a mini getaway holiday...
Today Davidwazza joined us as we set about finding all the caches in the FTF PT series and any others that got in our way
Most of the caches we located quickly and easily...I did say most...the rest took a minute or 2 more...
The day was warm and the sky was blue as we made our way to Iron Knob...

Day 301 (Thursday 25th) of our trip. Caching along the way. In Whyalla today. A total of 32 for the day and 5808 for the trip. TFTC
The hint had me a bit worried, looking at that hill. But then it was all too clear. TFTC
Headed out early to do the FTF series of caches. It proved to be slow going up to around #80 with a high proportion of containers in a poor state. We replaced log sheets and some containers that were broken but we soon ran out of supplies. This section, particulary those on the side heading to Iron Knob are in desparate need of maintenance. However we faired ok with only a couple of dnf's. Ran out of daylight so have only a few to finish off tomorrow. Thanks to all the CO's for placing these caches.
A quick find here as I head back into town on the FTF trail...
Spending a few days in Whyalla and found a few cache, or 300!
Had managed to solve all the puzzles before coming over too.
Of the nearly 300 found on the trip over and back from Adelaide, 95% were found within 50km of Whyalla Central, with approx a dozen dnfs also. Amongst all the finds was my 17000th find.
Also managed a lot of 'unloved' finds too.
What is it with Whyalla and mint tins? lol
TNLNSL
Thanks
Day 5 of the Perth to Adelaide trip where we started in Whyalla and ended in Adelaide.
Today was about finding as many caches as possible and starting / warming up to the larger power trails that bought us over here.
We completed the FTF series and the Letterbox caches.
During the morning we found the majority of the days caches, some highly favourited first up also.
Anyway the day has time limitations to it as we were hosting an event that started at 6pm and as it were we made it there at 5.59pm so early however the crowd of people there before us was rather pleasing.
It was great to see so much energy around Geocaching at the event the Adelaide teams really know how to impress and greet the visitors with a beer, thanks Freddo!
fishingmad I found your cache FTF PT-12: Yakcm thanks for placing this hide for myself and others to find.

Day 5 of Barnzy and Cravo’s trip from Perth to Adelaide.
Today we travelled from Whyalla to Adelaide via a number of country towns.
We started bright and early just before sunrise to pickup a couple of caches North of Whyalla that had some high favourite points which had tickled our fancy.
We then moved our attention to the FTF power trail, which started just out of Whyalla and took us all the way to Iron Knob. Found a good variety of difficulty and terrain combinations along the trail, with some interesting hiding spots. There were a couple of DNFs and caches that took a while to find which stretched out the time taken to complete the series.
We eventually made our way to Iron Knob and picked up the couple of caches around town which were quite nice in a very small mining town.
We were pushing the time factor quite hard, so skipped a fair few caches, but had to stop in at Port Germain to grab the aptly names Port Germain cache, which filled in a spot on the Jasmer grid, and its where I rolled my ankle running back to the car which made things a bit difficult for the rest of the day.
The other main target for the day was the Postman Pat Letterbox Hybrid Series, which were great quick finds of nicely sized containers.
We left the LBH trail and made our way to quickly check into the accomodation and made our way to our event in Lights Square “Sandgropers in the City”, which we made it to exactly one minute before it started, but a good sized crowd was already waiting to greet us, which was really nice as it was at last minute we had the event published.
It was great to finally put some faces to names we’ve only seen in logs, in particular the SA legend Freddo and TeamAstro. It was very interesting learning of the large scale model of the solar system, of which we had found one of the caches on the Nullarbor on our way over.
After bidding farewell to the event attendees we grabbed a bite of food and walked around the CBD caching, with mixed results.

found it on a trip to Whyalla over the Adelaide cup long weekend. quick find on the slow return home. I thought to make a dent on this power trail and stopped at number 50.
5/55 for today - my best day so far.
Whyalla to Iron Knob through to Renmark. Stopping whenever I felt like it, wherever I felt like it, if there was a cache nearby anyway.
I drove past a lot but didn't have time to get them all!
I didn't stop for a lot of these caches but enough to give me a good head start for the day.
Thanks

Since moving from New Zealand I have been enjoying the area, exploring and finding caches.
So far I’ve knocked off 4 of the states. VIC, SA, NSW and A.C.T
No two areas are the same here and almost every place I go is stunning. The beauty of caching is that it takes you to so many places you would never usually find.
Thank you to all the cachers out there for hiding and maintaining their caches. Especially to those who put so much effort into creating unique and fun hides.
The caches I’ve found in Australia so far have for the most part all been in great condition. Keep up the good work.

Today we were on the road from Port Augusta to Whyalla and we had planed to do this trail. But it was to much for one day so we did only half of the trail today and tomorrow we will try to do the other half.
We saw that some of the caches were found already more than half a year ago so we expected to have a lot of not founds. But most of the caches we found! It is a very nice trail to do and we say thank you for hiding the caches to all of the cache owners. We enjoyed it and had fun today.
Greetings from team De Kivits, Netherlands.

Staying in town for a few nights and there's a power trail. Thank you, Whyalla. I only got a few done this time. I'll have to come back next time for the rest. Mostly quick finds. Thanks all involved.
Found with e.gregory1 during a caching foray around Whyalla for the weekend to find as many puzzle caches as possible and make a dent on the power trails. Thanks for the cache fishingmad!
Found with Featherwaite on a visit to Whyalla to pick up a few caches. Thanks fishingmad for the cache.
Found it with TICE [Hiltsu, J&T, kapeka & laalaa]
We had fun with caching few weeks here in Australia ( South Australia and Northern Territory ). Lots of geocaches and many sort of them too. We saw awesome places, weather was good all the time and people were friendly and polite. Caches were pretty similar like in our home country. Of course there were some exeptions. Nice and huge country!

Team ICE on a two week geocaching trip in Australia. Our main target was the Red Centre Experience at Alice Springs but of course we did some caching in other places too. We drove from Adelaide to Alice Springs and then back. We saw lots of interesting and beutiful places like opal mines at Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta. Our rental travelled almost 6500km on gravel and tarmac roads. The weather was great, only on last day we got some rain.
All the caches logged as Team Ice, T-ice or Tice with kapeka, laalaa and Hiltsu. We had a great trip!
Today our journey continued from Port Augusta to Whyalla and back. Some trail caches and others logged on the way.

On the road to Iron Knob, and finding as many of the FTF PT series as I can, an interesting mix of hides and some I didn't find. A most enjoyable day out ,many thanks to all the hiders for the placements.
This was the second day spent picking up more caches along this power trail between Iron Knob and Whyalla. We found most of them with just a few misses for various reasons. We enjoyed finding these caches and were very happy to pick up some more unloved caches. Thank you to fishingmad for placing this cache.

From the time that the FTF Power Trail began to be published, we had it on our "To Do" list. As the number of caches grew, our planning to visit Whyalla became more serious. Finally the stars were in alingment. Yesterday we started near Whyalla and went to Iron Knob and back, finding many in the series and only not-finding one. Today our first task was to attempt to find the remaining caches in the series. Thank you to the geocachers of Whyalla for planning, publishing and maintaining the series.
Accurate coordinates and the hint led to a quick find. The cache and contents were in good condition. Thanks for the cache fishingmad.

A big day, starting in Whyalla, heading to Iron Knob and back again. Over 100 caches found for the day, plenty of laughs too! We started a bit before 9am and were finished a little after 5pm. Plenty of big trucks, trains and scratches on my legs along the way! We'd seen the knob, now it was back home (the motel) to Whyalla! Thanks to all the hiders for their effort.

Plenty of big trucks, trains and scratches on my legs along the way! We'd seen the knob, now it was back home (the motel) to Whyalla! Thanks to all the hiders for their effort.

Thanks fishingmad.

Day Eight of the WA road trip with BettyBoo3747. Today we hit the FTF power trail that runs out of Whyalla towards Iron Knob. We also grabbed a handful of other caches on the way.
We started at #81 and worked our way back to #30 then went back into Whyalla for lunch. After lunch we came back out and did a few more, not quite completing the series, but enough for us today.
The weather was lovely - overcast and a slight breeze, very nice for jumping in and out of the car.
A good collection of nice sized caches and interesting hides.
Just one thing - take BB's advice and don't do what she did and wear shorts for this series
Thanks for this nice series, Robmc.

# 7769. Our second day in Whyalla and with grey skies, a mild temperature and a cooling breeze Robmc and I put plan A into action. This consisted of driving out to #81 and working our way back to town. We enjoyed morning tea in the shade on the side road before stopping at #30 and going back to our cabin for a couple of hours. We then returned and tackled most of the rest. We also grabbed a few others that were along the road. As we started at 8.30am and did the last ones around 5.00pm it did turn out to be a rather long and tiring day.
There were certainly a few cute, bizarre or unexpected hides amongst the routine ones of tubes and eclipse tins. Bisons were certainly rarer than anticipated which is probably a good thing as we made hard work of locating these today. Keep eating those Fish Oil Tablets - they make good-sized containers.
Thanks fishingmad

(Chwiliwr team catch up log)After arriving late in Whyalla last night we made a reasonably early start on doing the FTF PT trail plus any of the other caches nearby to them from Whyalla towards Iron Knob. Most were found without problems with a few DNF's along the way. The last cache was done about 8 pm before heading off to Port Augusta. Thanks fishingmad for the cache.

I've travelled to Whyalla from Perth to cache. I stopped to log this find during a few hours of caching on my first full day here. Thanks for hiding this cache fishingmad.
As we head from town to town as part of our "Purposeful Meander around Oz" the Rats and the Mini Rats found this cache.
We came back today to do a further part of this powertrail today as we had a free morning. There were once again some tricky hides. Some spots were difficult to access due to the railworks in the area.
Thanks for being part of our great adventure.

Second of three quick finds right on sunset when heading home to Pt Pirie, not sure how I missed it last time I was in Whyalla. Like you I also had trouble with Grandi Tramoli and needed some help from Yakcm. Thanks for the hide fishingmad.

Another perfect spring day for a drive around Whylla after doing 1/2 of the FITG series.
Hardly any muggles around and mostly good quick finds.
Thanks for the cache fishingmad,

Catching up with late logs.
Last time we were over this way this trail was just starting and we managed to find most of them.
It has sure grown since then so this visit we were determined to try and clean them up again. An enjoyable day and a bit saw us with a lot more smiles and a lot less caches left on the map.
We have had the pleasure of meeting Yakcm on our previous visit to the Eyre. she very kindly chauffeured us around on a days caching around Whyalla when we were trying and succeeded in finding our 10,000tt find. This was a quick grab in a logical spot that was an easy find just as the sun was setting.
Many thanks to fishingmad for creating another one for this series.

A cache that I had missed out on last visit [:o]
It had been kindly replaced by the CO, so I made sure to detour out along the dirt tracks to have another crack at this one
And there it was in all its camoed glory [^]
I rode onwards ... far from exhausted today

Out on a geo ride with the lad doing some maintenance and grabbing a few newer caches we hadn't found yet. This one was on my list of caches to check and fair enough it was missing, so I hid a new cache in the same spot as the original. It's all good to go now.
On my bike ride today, my main aim was to see how far along the PT trail I could get
My prediction had been somewhere around 40 caches
But I may have been over optimistic
I wasn't prepared for how tricky some of these caches were to find.
That combined with the differing hiding methods of different hiders make this a really tough Power Trail to conquer [:o]
Not really a Power Trail at all !!
Best tackled by bike though
But in small bits !!
At #12 I had me second DNF on the trail, after not finding #10
That's enough !!
I'm forgetting about the PT and heading up the nearby hills on the push bike to find some Double Dragons and other caches

Looked high, looked low, looked everywhere in between.
But for us today, it wasn't to be seen.
Many thanks for the hunt, fishingmad.

We set out to attempt the first few of the FTF PT series but soon found we weren't having much luck as prickly bush and various other things meant many weren't being found. This was one of the few we did find before we decided to call it a day and try some town caches.
As we have just attended the event "Another Meet n Greet" with Earthlight we grabbed a few caches afterwards, i have done part of this trail from Iron knob but ran out of time to complete it, some of these were very quick to find while others proved a bit challenging, Thank you to all that contributed to this trail.
