No roadworks, but a new gate/grid. Looks like an old wire fence has been wrapped back onto the old fence. Didn't see anything, but it was so cold that I didn't want to stick around!
Based on a recent log this may have gone? We will try and check it out soon and will replace it.
This area is part of a road works area. Being the weekend we were able to stop and check things out. However the fence has been cut and a new gate put in right at GZ. We fear the worst. Sorry. This is s cache worthy place.
Reperio at 0850.
After spending the weekend at Jindabyne, we headed home to Newcastle today, and stopped by a few caches along the way. I've driven by this structure a couple of times, and so decided to stop by and grab a cache as well. Shame about the first cache, and funny how people still park next to it to take a photo of it yet council seem fine with that. As we walked to GZ, the kids had a great time cracking the ice on the frozen muddy puddles.
Gratias wing6rider.

Stumped geohubby so help was at hand and before long the cache was in hand. Sneaky one. Happy Mothers Day. TFTC.

After an overnight stay in Jindabyne and a lovely day in and above Thredo, my daughter and I stopped in here on the way back to Canberra.
It would have been fun to climb upon the ball of steel, but the quick and easy park and grab was ideal in the circumstances. TFTC

Today's journey was from Jindabyne to Bermagui. There weren't many along the way until I hit the Princes Hwy (apart from in Cooma), so I tried for most of them. This was a quick find, but I wasn't sure what the ball of steel was about. I should have read the cache page first.
My thanksagain to wing6rider & Crystal Warrior for the cache.
My thanksagain to wing6rider & Crystal Warrior for the cache.
Glad to see that this cache is now not in the location of the original cache as my stiff and sore body would not have let me climb there.
Pprime, Fangsoki and I stopped off on the trip back from the Snowy for a quick find.

Heading to the snowies with Crew153 and Fangsoki - we are sliding on down the road. A quick find for us today.
Thanks for placing this cache, wing6rider & Crystal Warrior. Found in good condition.

Pprime, Crew 153, and I were in the area grabbing a couple of caches.
Reading the description for this one, I am glad we didn't encounter the old cache We parked up and I followed my GPSr straight to the beast. The cache was in good condition. It was signed and returned safely to its home.
From memory, I believe there are "balls" like these up near Ballina. A great reason to stop. TFTC wing6rider & Crystal Warrior

Co-ords spot which made it easier. With fast moving cars along this stretch of Rd stopping needed care. Tftc.
Day three of our High Country holiday. Staying at Jindabyne and drove to Cooma.
A lovely days caching, with some great spots to visit, and all caches in good condition.
The original cache sounds interesting, but we were pleased it wasn't there today as there was a lot of roadwork right there, and a police car grabbing speeding drivers too. A distance down the road suited us down to the ground.
A interesting sculpture though.
Thanks, Robmc.

# 9905. Robmc and I are staying at Jindabyne but we decided to spend a day caching around Cooma as it was forecast to be a couple of degrees warmer. We had a wonderful day, finding a lot of cute caches and visiting some interesting and scenic places. It was so nice that all caches were in good condition.
As Rob mentioned, we were glad it was further away from the Ball than on it today. Road works and the police nabbing speeding mountain bike riders heading to Thredbo. We searched in peace and soon had the cache to hand.
Thanks wing6rider

1:57:00 PM. Plenty of room to get off the road and make the find. Had also stopped at the sculpture as well. Quite a bit of work in that. Signed log. Thanks wing6rider for placing this cache.
wing6rider I found your cache Return of Ball of Steel? on 14/01/2016, 10:47 AM. This is my find #1679 and find #2 today. A quick drive by, excellent parking off the main road. Thanks for the cache! TNSLLN
Love the story about the old cache site and council getting all dirty about it! Tftc.
Stopped to take a photo of "The Ball" and thought, "I wonder?"

Now that is one strange object just sitting there beside the road. Some engineering and thought went in to that! Thanks for showing us this masterpiece....eatmorchikin from Brisbane
The family played hooky on Monday to visit the snow for a day with relatives who had flown in from out of town. While investigating some roadside park and grabs, we noticed this one that we thought we'd done nearly six months ago.
Just to be sure we checked on our way south again, and sure enough our moniker is on the log having visited on 15 March 2015, returning home from hiking around Thredbo. A belated log for an interesting cache location.

Very interesting but why. Thanks for another cache on our walk about tour of the snowys. SL
A quick find on way to the snow. Snow still on the ground after the snow shower the day before. Thanks for the cache, Andrew, Maryan and Lucy
TFTC was a quick park and grab on our way home from exploring Jindabyne. A great view of the ball of Steele an interesting piece of art. Found with Graceash and geokids
TFTC nice quick park and grab. Although some stealth was required due to the long weekend traffic. Found with graceashmac and geokids
4045. A quick stop over with Stev87 on our way to Kalkite for a weekend of fishing. This was easier to find than the fish!

No 2 for the day en route to the roof of Oz, With Sol, LuckyL and Albida. Nice ball. I don't miss trying to find a nano on that !
#3103 - 08:30; It has been more than 30 years since my closest previous encounter with the summit of Australia's tallest mountain. On that occasion, I made it to Charlotte's Pass with the geohoney, but the mission was aborted due to approaching inclement weather. The climb has been on the bucket list ever since!
The day had arrived and in company with Sol de lune, Albida33 and Agent Basil I was headed to Jindabyne to meet up with MrDamage and lokipagan before heading off for our assault on the mountain. We decided we should pick up a couple along the way as Sdl had his 19,000 finds milestone in sight by the end of the day.
We parked the geomobile on a side road off the highway and soon found ourselves at GZ where a quick find was made before we were again headed for the hills. TFTC wing6rider

Together with arbor95 we are on the way south to the cache Australia's Used-to-be-Highest. For interrupting the boring drive we stopped at a view caches to sign in the logbook. this was one of them.
Thank You for this cache and for keep it going.

A tricky hide as you go for the most obvious structures here, but hint pointed us in right direction. TFTC.
Driving up I thought it would be in the big box in the middle. Is that a mailbox? But the coordinates pointed my more inwards and after a couple of minutes of searching I found this little container. Very nice container it is.
Thanks for the cache!

[red]My humble apologies for the late log...[/red]
After living away from home for 6 months, I have managed to find all my caching associated paperwork / notes & photo's so I can (finally) log all my finds...
My sincerest thanks to all the cache owners for their hides & all the effort gone into them & I'm sorry for the generic log... I have seen many beautiful area's that I would not of seen or experience if not for your hides...
Thanks for bringing me here and for the cache... A beautiful part of Australia...

What a bizarre ball. We parked closer tithe original cache before reading the description, then moved on and located the container. TFTC
Coming home from our last day of skiing for the season, I was happy to knock this one off my list.
I looked in some likely spots to start with and started to get nervous this was going to be a tricky one, requiring my husband to get out of the car and help, but then my eyes fell on the cache.

Driven past so many times.... Finally got a chance to check it out. Cool TFTC
Found 7:47 pm. On my way back from snow skiing. I wanted to find a cache today out this way somewhere and also for my daily streak #150 sort of a milestone. I would've done more but I wasn't the driver and secondly I had a fall resulting in a rather sore back so this was a good candidate. I'm hoping I haven't done anything too serious as I'm still suffering pain. Anyway TFTC.
Sad that it has Has to be a premium only cache as when your in a team only 1 can find

Found with Hoojar and Gronkaphonic on the way home from a hike in the Snowy Mountains.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Returning from a hiking trip in the high country and made the stop with Chip and Gronk to find this cache. Chip and I had found the original hide some years ago. It is not often that you can sit in the car, in the rain, and see the cache, sure makes for a quick find!
Cheers

Leaving Berridale for our overnight in Canberra we stopped at this cache. We wanted to get it last time we passed by but the RBT were doing their checks right here that time so we had to leave it. Found the cache nice and quickly due to a glint as it winked at us upon our arrival. Thanks again wing6rider for another of your caches we've found today. [^][^]
TFTC...goekids loved chambering over the ball...even if the cache wasn't that close by lol
Heading for Kosciuszko National Park for camping, we needed to stretch our legs. We did it here, admiring the Ball of Steel from a distance, and finding the cache.
Our second and last cache for the day on the drive from Canberra area to near Jindabyne.
The steel ball was rather neat, and I also love this rocky countryside.
Took some photos, signed the log, thanks wing6rider.

An interesting sculpture just randomly by the side of the road. A quick find as we pulled up, due to the sun glinting off the cache. Thanks for highlighting this for us.
Found on our Jindabyne/Narooma trip. Never found the original Ball of Steel cache, though I remember looking at the pictures on the cache page. Good to see it back in a safe position. A fantastic piece of art along the side of the road, very nicely done. An easy park near the cache and a very quick find (though we had to find out which side of the fence it was on). Nicely done. TFTC W6R and CW (de ja vu)!
After finding and singing the cache I was admiring the big ball when the local farmer pulled up in his ute to where we were parked.
He was a bit weary about what I was doing but I managed to side track him by asking about the ball, where he proceeded to give me the whole history of it.
Very interesting piece of art.

We're disappointed that we never got to climb the steel ball. Fortunately this cache still exists so that the ball can be admired. TFTC
Nice little cache. Easy find. Thank you. Angus the great Geo Westie assisted by grey nomad Carer Lis Brown en route from Bundaberg Qld to Perth WA via Tasmania.
Found with taurus1955 and BentleyTB. Missed the nearby steel structure as it was dark by this stage. We found this cache with the help of the car headlights and torches. A very clever hide that gets a favourite from me. One car slowed down as it went past. The next one stopped and we were able to reassure the driver that everything was okay! TFTC
Found this cache on the way from Cooma to Jindabyne (had tea in Cooma, after a day of touring and caching) in the dark, using torches and the car headlights. We must have looked very suss!!!

Quickest find of the day which was surprising considering I thought I was looking for a small not a micro for some reason.

Day two of a wonderful extra-long-weekend caching trip with Doppelfrog throguh Namadgi, Cooma and Eden. Doppelfrog and I had completed the original ball of steel on another public holiday caching trip to Jindabyne some time back and remember climbing around in the ball in the dead of night in high wind whilst being freezing cold so I was not very surprised that that one did have to go. Probably wise and the new cache is a good compromise. Today's attempt was just a windy and just as cold although not dark and we managed to find the cache very quickly without upsetting anyone. Still a very interesting spot. Thanks wing6rider.
Found this one on our way to the (dwindling) snow... A very interesting structure indeed! We found a little track and managed to drive all the way there: no parking on the main road for us! The cache itself was very easily found, with three of us spotting it before even getting out of the car ! We also saw that TankEngine left a little secret message. Thanks wing6rider, we'd heard about the first version and are sad never to have had the pleasure of searching for it. Only after driving away did I wonder if the original is perhaps physically still there... it is always fun to find archived caches .
Came by here and wanted to find this cache on our way home from visiting friends in Berridale. Unfortunately the men in blue, with their red and blue lights blazing and blinking, were set up right across the road from the Ball of Steel. We decided we'd look a bit suss pulling up right at GZ with them right there so we had to give it a miss until another time. Just love that big ball of steel. Great place for a cache!
