Beautiful spot but DNF. Saw evidence of where it possibly could have been.

North Island Campervan trip Day 6

After the fantastic holiday I had a few months ago traveling around the South Island, making the most of one of those incredibly cheap campervan deals available at the time, I figured it was worth taking a week off work before the stresses of the usual holiday period to enjoy some of the delights to be found around the top of the North Island.

This would be a great chance for me to seek out some targeted caches such as the TMGT ones as well as some that would help me with my Jasmer grid, missing minutes (for a couple of challenge caches I'm working on) and any other caches that caught my eye.

With the wild weather, I had decided to play it a bit safe and spent last night in a Motor Camp in Tauranga. I was intending to head back down to Whakatane/Ohope and then start the journey back towards Auckland today, never quite knowing how far I'd get by the time evening rolled in, especially as it was a later-than-usual start for me this morning.

It's been quite some time since I was last in Tauranga (about 11 years I think) and much of it I hadn't seen at all so it was good to have a bit of a drive around chasing caches to check the place out, in spite of the intermittent rain!

This cache ended up being a much more interesting find than I was expecting, simply due to the barrier trying to prevent access to GZ. Obviously locals ignore it on a regular basis, or maybe it's a steady stream of geocachers lol! Either way, the cache itself was a quick find. There were no issues with the cache or the log, which was swiftly signed and everything returned exactly as found before I made my way back to the van to carry on with my journey.

Thanks for setting this cache up.

17-Oct-20
I like to play in trees

29-Jul-20
Found it. Took a few minutes but was right there in front of me. Lol Thanks for the cache.

17-May-20
Our first find after lockdown. After a wee walk around the rocks, eagled eyed Mrs spotted what we were looking for. TFTC

13-Feb-20
Silly move on my part. Out to exercise my foot ready to do the Kawekas caches again but
rock hoping made it worse but another find thanks.

18-Jan-20
Found it almost immediately, which was nice after spending ages on it last time for a dnf. GZ must have had more growth last time. Awesome summers day for a lovely spot with a good view of air show on in Tauranga today.

09-Jan-20
A bit of a blustery old day but added to the fun. On a mission to get to 100. #99 Thanks for the fun

18-Dec-19
A lot of fun getting this one in not the best weather but got there in the end. Thanks for the fun

18-Dec-19
Not the best day to tackle this one- SO blowy, we thought we would end up in the drink!!(or the log would!!). But we soldiered on and came up with the goods. Thanks for the fun

18-Dec-19
It was definitely not the best day to attempt this cache, blowing a gale and spitting with rain, but we had so much fun getting it, and all managed without anyone or anything ending up in the water! Gets a favorite for the fun, TFTC

13-Dec-19
The rocks were a bit unstable (wobble, wobble), but we managed! Thanks for the fun hide!

28-Oct-19
Took a few minutes to figure out the access to avoid upsetting marina people. Worked it out and was a stroll to the GZ. GPS had us in the wrong spot, but we soon worked it out. TFTC

06-Oct-19
Great day out around Tauranga, seeing where caching takes us. The weather was really changeable, so we equipped ourselves with suitable layers and a sense of humour, sufficient supplies of food and water, and geocaches loaded onto the GPS. We found some really cool caches between the patches of rain. TFTC!!

05-Oct-19
Bit of a clamber. Watch out for the wind! Cool find.

I wasn't too sure about this cache as the wind was reasonably strong and I would have to leave my bike out of sight (locked of course) and the rock hopping didn't excite me this evening. So I decided to bike closer to GZ and check it out to see if it was doable. Where I stood it was about 150m to GZ and I decided to go for it and to my surprise I was able to walk most of the way on grass with minimal rock hopping. Furthering my delight I spotted the cache as I approached GZ.

In the end I was super glad I found this cache and I ended up enjoying navigating my way to GZ.

01-Jun-19
It was a cold and windy day so not many muggles around. Quick find TFTC

25-May-19
Came down here to explore the area more fully with my wife KrystalKath and Tama the geohound.
Arrived too late for Tama to compete in the Agility comp for novice dogs... Yeah Right.
But it was fun for him to meet so many other well trained pooches.
Enjoyed the walk to GZ. I have a similarly located cache in New Plymouth. KK chatted to the local fishing couple while I found and signed the log. TFTC

18-Apr-19

21-Nov-18
I was a bit unsure of this one as the map made it look like we’d be swimming but it made sense when we got there. Thanks Smile

21-Nov-18
We weren't sure how to get out here but started in the logical direction.. on the map it looked like we had to swim! Luckily not! People must fish off the rocks here as it appeared some bait fish was left. Not near where you have to walk though!

16-Nov-18
Nice little out the way cache. Went straight to it and spotted really quickly. TFTC.

11-Nov-18
After brunch with Vamber and they'd headed back to the big city, we thought we'd grab another couple of caches and some solve puzzles. After doing the usual drive to the end of the road, we came back to this car park, and found the spit and wandered out. Nice easy find on arrival, thanks

22-Oct-18
Another good cache to find, good fun today. Heading back to Auckland

TFTC

05-Oct-18
School holiday trip to Auckland/Coromandel with the family. After a couple nights at Hot Water beach time to head for Tauranga for a few nights and an explore. After settling in to our accommodation & having in Matua and having some tea we headed out here for the webcam and a couple other caches. Silly me forgot to grab a torch so in the growing dark had to rely on GPS light! Parked up in the growing dark and he light of the gps we wandered to GZ where he made the find and I signed. Nice spot!

08-Sep-18
Found this one then the dog was able to have a play with the water lapping up to the steps near the car park before having a run around to dry off.
Cache is in such a cool spot and in good condition.

25-Aug-18
Was out this way for a course and went out at lunch time to find this one and found the cache went to sign the log and had dropped my pen, bugger! Didn't have time to go back at sign it before the end of lunch so had to go again at the end of the day with a firm grip on my pen lol. Smile

10-Jul-18
Nice find but bloody cold pen didn’t work but all good in the end

29-Jun-18
nice spot!

02-Jun-18
Today I had a free day in Tauranga and luckily the weather was nice, so I could do a lot of hiking. I started walking to Marine Park than I went by bus to Mount Maunganui, on which I walked up on the afternoon. I enjoyed the beautiful view and of course all the nice Geocaches.

Very interesting place. Would never have come to here without that Cache! Had a little nice lunch break here. Cache all good!

Thanks for hiding this one!

27-May-18
We wouldn't have known you could walk out here if it wasnt for this geocache. It was a little blustery but we made a nice quick find

26-May-18
Teamed up with Merlot58 and Aiden29 to form team JAM. An interesting spot we would not otherwise have attempted to visit if it was not for the cache.

26-May-18
Tftc

Was a bit wet, but the brisk wind out there meant it dried in less than a minute.

22-Apr-18
Finally we have a weekend free to catch up with some caches close to home. Great to be out and about on a sunny autumn day but a bit breezy at GZ TFTC.

06-Apr-18
Out exploring Sulphur Point this morning. We enjoyed the walk alongside the sea to GZ. We turned the last corner and were a bit dismayed to see a fishing couple right at GZ. But at that exact moment one of them caught a good sized trevally and that broke the ice and enabled us to grab the cache. We think they must be regulars out here as we were asked if we were "playing the game". Thanks for showing us this interesting spot.

24-Mar-18
Not having much luck today but this was a quick easy find, thank you

11-Mar-18
Lovely place for a walk on a sunny afternoon. Found it without much hunting

10-Feb-18
Nice walk around to cache area. However I should’ve brought my fishing rod

25-Jan-18
Nice evening walk along the waterline. Initially approached this from the north before realising one had to come from the south. Cache all fine. TFTC

22-Jan-18
Sneaky little cache.

19-Jan-18
Made a quick find before heading out of town. TFTC

19-Jan-18
Found with VikingNav today while exploring the area. Thanks for the fun cache! >^..^

06-Oct-17
Nice little stroll to a nice little hide. TFTC

03-Oct-17
Quick easy find while on bike ride.

02-Oct-17
Whilst in the area, decided to head out to look for this one. When I got near GZ, there was a fisherman casting a lure for kingfish. I hadn't read the hint, so expected to be looking in the rocks, which wasn't going to happen with the muggle right there.

Once I checked the description and hint properly though, I realised that the cache was actually touchable from where I was standing and so I was able to retrieve and sign the log and return it without the muggle fisherman being any the wiser. TFTC

23-Aug-17
Out in town needed to kill a few hours, so i grabbed a few caches on the almost spring day. View was awesome, and nicely hidden. TFTC

12-Aug-17
Great Cache. Thanks.

Yup one of those out of the way spots is never go with geocaching
Tftc

29-Jul-17
I am going to have to give this one a favourite as never in a million years would I have found this spot if it had not been for trying to track down a geocache. And now that I find myself here, I am thinking, what a spectacular little spot, perfect for a picnic, great views in all directions and plenty of boating action to observe. Might even be a spot where could catch a few fish? TFTC

12-Jun-17
Lovely spot but no luck this time!

06-Jun-17
A nice little 1/2 day caching over in the Bay in the company of RWIMF which necessitated an early start and a few cahaes to being a bit of a clean up of the local area to continue the work towards keeping control on all the placements that abound over this way. These early morning ventures are always more fun when there are so few muggles or muggle cars to contend with.
We were fortunate enough to even manage a FTF at the start of the day.
A short walk to GZ and time to take in the nearby boats heading out to get in a days fishing. soon spotted and in hand

Thanks to all the CO's for the work that they put into maintaining these caches in the BOP
thanks for the placement, thanks for the cache

05-Jun-17
Cats & Dragons sent me a text a few days ago asking what I was planning for the holiday. "dunno" was the reply, so he suggested a half day caching. What I always fail to think about is just how hard it is to get up so early in the morning! As we parked up and headed over to GZ, I couldn't help but think about how cold the wind was, and watch the people in their boats heading out for a days fishing wonder "why?"... but then I can't comment - its 7:30am on a public holiday and I'm out caching! C&D has already laughed at me for hacing my big puffy jacket on and beanie.
He lead the way to GZ, but it was I who first spotted the cache! All in good order, log was signed, and we were on our way again.

28-May-17
Quick find. What a beautiful spot. Thanks

28-May-17
nice spot might bring my rod next time

10-May-17
A great spot for a cache thanks. Walked here from the car park with SB20 and for the first time all day we didn't have a pen with us.! Took a photo instead. Tftc.

10-May-17
Cool hide here, thanks for the cache Smile Almost lost the cache out on the rocks! This was number 25 of around 30 that KathyKaches and I found today on our mission to beat our previous record of 23 finds in a day. Very pleased to have beat this Smile

23-Apr-17
Great spot, TFTC. Logbook a bit damp.

05-Apr-17
Got a day off school to attend a conference on GIS....the second most important use of satellites and gps...this was at the nearby Yacht Club and so, after knocking off a few chores and grabbing a coffee from town, I still had 15 minutes before the, very amiable, registration tie of 10am....parked up and walked to GZin one of the few breaks in the weather, avoiding the myriad of puddles. The cache was quickly found, I did think it may benefit from the addition of an O-ring....I did think about a photo....but the fast approaching bank of black clouds put me off.

Last find for the night, sun was down and the storm front was approaching fast, lots of wind and waves crashing onto the rocky outcrop, luckily it was quickly located so I could go back to the warm ute.
A spot worthy of a cache, thanks for the placement.

12-Mar-17
Came here quite a while ago when it was in rocks but couldn't find it, no problems today.

06-Mar-17
Great little spot! Nice cache, even in jandals

25-Feb-17

We took a day's leave to make a long weekend to come to Rotorua (from the Manawatu) for a D5/T5 that we qualified for in Chch recently. Making the most of the trip and getting as many others as we can fit in. The Manawatu summer is dreadful this year and we cannot believe our luck on getting two gloriously hot blue sky days. Loving it! Having got what we came for in Rotorua we dashed to Tauranga for the web cam - got here late side tracked like usual. After ages of fluffing we got the web cam and then went for these local traditionals before finding a sushi dinner in town and then heading back to Rotorua. This was relatively easy despite a few fishermen around enjoying the weather. Soon had it signed and replaced as found. Giving this a favourite. TFTC

23-Feb-17
Another good find on a trip away.
Nice walk to cache.

23-Feb-17
Beaut walk from town to get here where a nice quick find was made. Thanks CO and TFTC.

15-Feb-17

15-Feb-17
Working our way back to our cruise ship now, this was a little scramble then a quick find. Tftc and hi from Oxford England.

06-Feb-17
Watched all the boats go out to catch some fish. A great little find in a fantastic spot. We enjoyed our little clamber over the rocks. TFTC Smile

29-Jan-17
Great day for a geocaching bike ride on this Anniversary week end. Got a little exciting on the bike as we reached the rocks, but what is life without a bit of adventure. Rock-hopping is fun. Cache is all good. Regular stream of boats coming and going - great views. TFTC

10-Jan-17
Found after a visit to the local chandlers looking for some bits for the boat. The last 20 yards were a bit of a scramble. TFTC

05-Jan-17
Decided to tag-along with my parents on a roadtrip from Auckland to Tauranga, as they had to bring 2 dogs down to have their hips and elbows x-rayed. Knowing we'd have a couple of hours to kill, I managed to convince my parents to let me find a few caches, in particular the webcam at the end of the port.

Having completed the webcam and 2 other caches I tried to find my way to this cache. Realised I had to walk further down around the dry dock and then come back around. Wasn't wearing my usual shoes for rock hopping but made my way around without falling over. Spotted the cache hanging on approach, so could luckily make a fast find, as the parents were waiting in the parking lot.

28-Dec-16
Took two attempts with a beer in-between.
A completely obvious find when doing, but can be a tricky little blighter.

Brilliant day for a walk along the water front.

10-Dec-16
I found it huzzah!!! I was starting to think I had come out all this way for nothing but alas- there she was! Awesome hide. Thanks for the cache!

03-Nov-16
Windswept spot today! Nicely hidden tftc

26-Oct-16
I am visiting from Australia and after a week at New Plymouth visiting my sister then the mega event at Turangi over the weekend it is time to play tourist on the way back to Auckland for a Saturday flight. Today was a full day based at Tauranga checking out some of the local caches and sights starting with a hike up and around Mount Maunganui.

Back towards the port for some more. No can't get to it from where I first parked so after getting the other couple further up drove back in and up the dirt road to the parking area where I could walk around the back of the marina to the breakwater. Once on there spotted it nice and quickly. Thanks KmanNZ.

25-Oct-16
It took the Seagnoid and I three days to drive the ~250KM from Palmerston North to Turangi for the Mega.
I wonder how long it'll take us to drive home given that we're going via Tauranga? (to get the webcam cache!)
We stayed overnight in Rotorua and now we've made it to Tauranga and just collected one of our missions for the post-Mega road trip - the North Island's only remaining Webcam Cache!

As we were walking around the boat compound towards GZ, I saw a new sight - a boat hoist in action.
"What do you do with a straddle-crane when it's too small for modern-sized containers? Put strops onto it and make it into a boat hoist! Razz

25-Oct-16
Zara, Etherlord and I are on our home to Palmerston North from the Turangi Mega. Took the long way home to get a web cam cache here.
So here we are doing some more on this peninsula. Given that I hate this style of hide (hate = usually have trouble finding) this was an easy find. Sounds like a good omen to me!

21-Oct-16
I'd not had a succcessful day so I needed a find. Got to the rocks and thought,"Well, at least there won't be any muggles here." At this point, a voice from over my shoulder said hello. He may have been a cacher but I waited until he'd gone anyway. Grabbed the cache and - first signature on a new log!

14-Oct-16
Found it! But forgot the damn pen to claim the first name on the new log

08-Oct-16
Found with Injections. Tftc

06-Sep-16
Log has been replaced.
Thanks for letting me know and thanks to yodabeach for replacing the log for me. I owe you.

03-Sep-16
Only three spaces left on the log so may need replacing soon.
Cheers

03-Sep-16
Out with My.Precious grabbing a cache or two while the weather is nice. Forecast showers tomorrow. signed the log with our joint monogram TT2M.P
Took a walk on the rocky side to GZ. M.P looked one side and I the other and I found it first. Logged and replaced. Will need a replacement log soon as only two or three spaces left. On way back talked to a guy who after 2 hours fishing further along the breakwater managed to catch a kahawai for tea.

03-Sep-16
Out with Tigatat2 to fill a small gap of free time while the weather is nice. Showers forecast for tomorrow.
Tiga made the find on this crafty little number that had us clambering over big sea boulders - mainly cause she got there first. Lol.
Signed the log with our joint monogram of TT2M.P but not much room left now.
Tftc

02-Sep-16
On holidays in NZ from French Polynesia. Trying t ofind geocaches since there are not that many in FP. Nice little one and the place as well. Found it with a friend who is a geocacher as well.

Cheers from Polynesia

21-Aug-16
Easy find. Lol scared off a family fishing when I was circling around the area. Strange Bogan activity. Beautiful day and cool spot. Didn't know this was here. Thanks for bringing me here. Tftc.

21-Aug-16
Awesome spot here. Enjoyed the scenic walk to the geocache. Great hiding spot with nice views. Well worth a favourite point. Thanks for the cache.

11-Aug-16
2105 Looked for this last time I was in Tauranga. Sighted it but muggle fishermen around so didn't even try to grab it. Back today with Fozie4956 so let them make the find. No fishermen in sight.
