Heading through to Nelson today, so made a point to stop and grab the final here along the way. Plenty of room to park off the road with the camper, before rejoining the light traffic, TFTC

This cache:Nice little puzzle, easy solve. Still wondering what had happened here. The final was further than expected but along the way I was planning to go. So picked it up there, easy find, tftc! This day:I had a whole day to myself, while Mrs Dutch Kiwi was entertaining the kids. The weather was not great but mainly dry, so I decided to do a string of caching along the SH6. I started just after Hira and continued almost up to the Rai Valley, finding or replacing every cache along the way. Except for 1 DNF, where fallen trees had completely covered GZ. A lot of fun bush bashing and some golden oldies that were still patiently waiting for my visit. Also finally got around to seeing the section of old SH6. What a great and successful day it was! Geocaching brings you to so many cool places you would otherwise not even know existed! Smile

A nice multi but neither do I know anything about this gentleman MacCarthy Just arrived from the North Island heading over to Blenheim, but took my time to stop for a cache or two or three Well foundTftc

06-Feb-24
Half the family away, quarter still asleep and a holiday day to buzz, buzz, buzz. I had previously almost solved this one and then while passing after a recent Nelson event, I confirmed exactly where it was. Easy find today going in the preferred direction before it gets too hot.

03-Jan-23
We often drive by a lot of caches in this general area because it doesn't suit to stop, but today we had time for this quick find on returning from Pelorus. Good to make the find after getting the info a long time ago. TFTC

I made doubly sure I had the right numbers and did the right calculation before I went to the final, TFTC.

16-Mar-22
Found on our visit over this way from Blenheim for an appointment. A beaut day and opportunity to get a few yellow smiles. No problems here after getting all the info needed. TFTC

19-Feb-22
I was doing it wrong direction wise, but my search for safe turnaround points lead me to caches I would not have stopped at otherwise today Wink TFTC!!

31-Dec-21
Found with Ulmuslynx on the way to pelorus.
Gathered the information and found the cache on the way back to Nelson.
Thank you for the multi and the cache

Found with no.13. Did research on way to event at pelorus and found on way back. Tftc

29-Oct-21
I collected the info for this a few months ago, on my last visit to the region.
Good to be driving this way today & I was able to sign the log. Thanks for this Multi, Kiwimykl.

02-Nov-20
Final location was too far away in wrong direction for us today.

05-Oct-20
We solved this one on our way across to The Marlborough Sounds on Friday, but after surveying the final location we decided we’d grab it on the way back. Pulling off the road here was really straightforward and we had a good idea where the cache would be.
It did require a good deal of caution to get to GZ, but once we were there it didn’t take long to find.

08-Jul-20
First multi today with Shellsadventure quick find to end our awesome afternoon caching.

08-Jul-20
With dry weather and a day to ourselves Missnboyz and I began a caching dayhunt. Showed her how to solve multicaches so this will be her first of many i hope.
Its been a while since i solved one where the cache was a while away from the original co ords - double checked my answer before setting off and low and behold located enroute home. Many thanks Kiwimykl for a good puzzle.

03-Jul-20
Found while caching with ABL973. Thanks Kiwimykl

03-Jul-20
Earlier today I had stopped up the road and collected the numbers for GZ and on my return trip from Rai Valley I stopped here. I wasn't sure what the hint meant but now I do, but then where else would it be? It took a bit longer to find but found it was. Thanks kiwimykl.

06-Apr-19
Had solved for the coordinates on a previous venture over the hill. Today on returning home remembered that I needed to stop while travelling the right way. Good parking spot and cache in hand. Thanks for the multi and thanks for the cache.

17-Jan-19
We are on vacation in New Zealand and of course we seek some caches.
Thanks for this one! The other side was more save.
Greetings from the Dutch.

05-Jan-19
We stopped off here while on our way through to Blenheim. Alastair noticed a familiar car in the rest area and went off to "spin a bit of a yarn" with a mate while I did the calculations. Then we off to GZ for a QEF. Then onwards to the land of plenty. Cheers and TFTC

10-Nov-18
Making our way towards Blenheim to attend the annual GIFF event, so we thought we would pick up a few of Kiwimykl's caches as we are (sort of) nearing 100 of his finds. We worked out the coordinates for this one a very long time ago, and we have driven past this one so many times, but today we decided if the traffic was obliging then we would have a go. We were surprised that there was not another vehicle in site as we neared GZ so we made a quick find in exactly the place we thought it would be.
Although I was quite pleased that GK was there as he just grabbed it through the spiders web. I on the other hand would have fluffed around removing the web with a stick before being brave enough to grab it.

Thanks for placing this cache and of course thank you for the smilie

19-Mar-18
We have a new challenge and I have a couple of days of leisure before a minor knee op coming up. So the idea was to get as many points as I could before then.
There is a few caches for me to grab heading over the Whangamoas... but only grabbing what I can on this side of the road.
This was sitting in my solved pile.... and a good time to grab.

First solve of the day, and last find on the way back over the hill. I can't find any reference to Justin so can't help there, but thanks for the cache KM.

Today I decided on a trip to Nelson with a pretty open agenda. I had noticed that my D/T matrix is a not flattering 55, and has gained only one in the last 6.5 months. Not good. So I targeted some that may help that, as well as a few for the the hidden month matrix, and of course any others that get in the way. Not hugely productive but a good day anyway - spent too much time revisiting some that have been causing me problems....

11-Nov-17
I don't quite understand your log of September 23 last year. The solved coordinates very definitely took me to a cache on the opposite side of the road and you can see from the logs that others have been finding the same cache - - - so I'll claim a find.

27-Sep-17
did the maths on my last trip but was going the wrong way so it was my first cache today.

23-Aug-17
A there and back trip to Picton, so a chance to get this, TFTC

15-Jan-17
Did the calculation yesterday so got it on way home as parking was on that side

08-Jan-17
Read the plaque, got the answer and headed off down the road to see where the final was. A good turning spot not far past and we were soon retrieving the cache to sign. I found details of 2 Justin Mccarthy's buried in Nelson, but the dates don't match so possibly neither is correct, one died 1961, the other 1973.

#8670. We were driving from Nelson to Blenheim earlier in the day and took a short break at the Graham Stream Rest Area off State Highway 6 in Whangamoa to find the tribute to Justin McCarthy. Gathered the required information and got a set of sensible coordinates for the final. As advised, we waited till the return trip back to Nelson this evening to find the cache. Final GZ was all quiet when we visited at this time. Quick find. The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Thanks for bringing us to the sites, and …

Coordinates changed from:
S 41° 11.152 E 173° 29.253

Coordinates changed to:
S 41° 11.137 E 173° 29.244

Distance from original: 100.1 feet or 30.5 meters.
After being told the listed coordinates for this cache were a bit flakey, I checked them today and found they needed adjusting. Surprisingly, they were taken with the same piece of equipment as the final coordinates which were within 2m

23-Sep-16
A couple of recent logs suggest that people may be finding another cache on the opposite side of the road from where I placed the final and that the location is in a dangerous place for parking. This concerns me and I have updated the hint and will check the final next time I am passing by, but this may not be for a month or so. The final is a magnetic barrier cache with good safe parking on the same side of the road as the memorial plaque 5.47kms closer to Blenheim. As you approach GZ you do need to be prepared to stop as come across the final shortly after a sweeping LH bend.

18-Sep-16
Solved on the way to Nelson but the final was behind us (and involved checking the logs to see if others had commented about how far away it was), so we carried on to Nelson with the aim of picking this up on the way back. On the way back we almost had to abandon the cache for later - excellent parking space, but far to dangerous to get to. Cross the road on a blind corner? I THINK NOT!! This cache is best solved as a Nelsonite travelling to Blenheim, then best retrieved on the way back to Nelson. For a Blenheimtonian visiting Nelson it is almost a two tripper. But we found a tiny pullover bay just over 100m past the cache, and so walked back to retrieve it.
Went online to look up some old newspapers, but no mention of this particular Justin McCarthy.

18-Sep-16
Rain forecast for Blenheim and fine for Nelson. We solved this in the rain thismorning but it was way behind us so left for return journey. After a sucessful day caching around Nelson its time to pick up a couple of off road ones we missed this morning. Parking difficult for this if going towards Blenheim. The Seagnoid found a little spot and we walked back. Yep another one sorted. The cache was several kilometers from the monument. Cheers

Whilst the published coords suggested I look elsewhere, you can't miss this tribute, so having grabbed the details I retired to the car to crunch some numbers.

The numbers added up and I whilst they suggested I needed to go a little further than I was intending today, time was on my side, so I decided to push on anyway.

Stopping for another unfound cache on the way - and missing another as I had not planned on going this far - I raised a wry smile as I turned around at the site of a cache I'd made a somewhat fool-hardy FTF dash for a few months back (I was STF by the way).

Easy enough to stop at the GZ but I did need to adopt various contortions to spot the cache.

Worth the extra few KM for another smiley today, but that's all I can offer, so the mystery of Justin McCarthy will live on.

Thanks

Today we travelled from Richmond to Spring Creek with the main objective of doing some maintenance in Momorangi Bay (and hopefully) picking up a FTF in Linkwater. The weather was miserable - raining, spitting and constantly changing its mind to have a brief break but always cold and windy so we pick and chose our cache depending on the weather in the moment, sometimes not even getting out if the car for a PnG! Still fitted in a full days of caching with 46 finds - oh and yeah we did get that FTF!! Big GrinBig Grin
Nice easy calculations done from the safety of the dry car. I did re-check them though when the final seemed quite far away. While planning our trip I had our smilies turned off so didnt realise this layby already occupies a previously found cache. A quick find at the final in only the spit now but I still took it back to the car to sign the logbook. Thanks for the cache Smile

I had collected the information for this multi with Kiwi_Explorer a few weeks ago. Today I was on the road again and so stopped to find this cache on my way home. No problems here. Cache found in the first place checked. No trackable in it though. TFTC, Biggles.

On a caching mission today.
We've driven past these caches several times now but Ms M has not allowed me to stop for any (in her view) "wtp" caches on this road. So, being on my own it was a good opportunity to clean up this highway again.

I had collected the coordinates to the final when out this way with Biggles a few weeks ago. Stopping in the dark on Friday night didn't make much sense so thought we would leave it for the way home today. The rain was torrential as we headed up to the Rai summit so a stop was looking unlikely. However, as we approached gz we entered the eye of the storm and there was not a drop while I grabbed the cache and signed the log. Nice multi.
Thanks Kiwimykl for the cache.

This was the first stop for the day. The GPS said the waypoint was on the right as we approached which would have been on the wrong side for us - but Mrs Sobad said to stop anyway in case the final was ahead now which meant it would have behind later. In fact the waypoint was on the left - and we parked close enough to do the paperwork from the car. The check sum as always was useful especially when the distance was noted. Headed on to Havelock and spotted the final spot as we passed ready to stop on the way home. Which we did, making this also the last stop for the day. After the waypoint was out by 35m on our machine, the final coordinates were perfect. The GPS also was erratic at a nearby cache so no idea if it was cold at the start of the day.
Thanks for the multi, the check sum and, of course, for the cache. Sorry, but we can't help with information about Justin.

Got the numbers on the way home from Pelorus Bridge today. Will go find the cache next time I'm heading in the right direction.

Opened the other eye.

Thanks a lot for the cache.....nice one.

Solved from the couch day of publication.

8000km's later, swing in to what seemed the likely final, but came up empty.

Took a picture of WP1 on way home, back at the couch, same result. Will have to have another (proper) look next time passing.

Cheers Kiwimyki

A trip over the hill was the plan for today, to hell with the weather there's some bedroom furniture needs sourcing and there's caches to be found too. Just the 3 of us heading over, will sure be different from now on without my black hairy shadow, Tally the dog. I'd recently bought a new Geocaching coat from Kathmandu (the shop, not the place) and was looking forward to testing it out against the promised wet stuff. I also bought some specific shorts but these were M I A after our recent house move so their test will have to wait.
Road tested the co-ords for this one and had noticed the (new?) plaque at start point and thought it would be good to base a cache off, luckily k-m obliged and the cache was soon in hand. 2 from 2 from this C O, Duppa will have to wait!

Out on a caching mission tonight, having just ticked off the last date in my caching calendar I wanted to get another 3 for the 4 plus a day challenge. Got the info and had a quick find on the way back to Nelson. TFTC

Big GrinFTFBig Grin with Hazedarus.
We were surprised to see this cache had no finds so after Hazedarus finished his morning shift and was "fed and watered" we ventured forth. We knew where this memorial was, we had spotted it a couple of weeks before when heading back to Canterbury for another foray. It didn't take long to get the required numbers from the comfort of the car and head off to GZ to make a quick find.
Thank you Kiwimykl.

Big GrinFTFBig Grin With Holymu. We needed a foursie today and with a FTF calling out we thought why not? The structure at GZ had recently been spotted and identified as new. Further investigation was planned but this cache beat us to it. The name seems to be associated with contract logging going back some 60 years. Dropped TB. Thank you Kiwimykl

My relatively close by Christmas tree cache was needing some maintenance so I thought combining that with finding this cache would kill two birds with one stone - so to speak. Ended up somewhere quite unexpected but the plan all came to fruition. TFTC #8526
