So we decided to go to Rangi hut for an overnight stay with Poppa and Mum. We checked online and saw there were a number of caches on the way. After checking the online logs we packed a few spares to take with us as some caches looked like they might need some help.We found the tramp to be pretty and scenic, we especially enjoyed the waterfall. The caches were a great way to break up the tramp.Log a little damp. Love the hiding idea. Thanks rattll for the cache.DadandKidsNZ (with Mum and Poppa)
Found after an overnight tramp up to Rangiwahia Hut. Rainy on the way up but clear on the way down. TFTC
It was out gor all to see when we got to the sign. Hid it a bit better behind the post, but you might want to go and check it out. In the area for a couple of days for my birthday. Spectacular walk with so much birdlife and amazing views. TFTC
Headed home after 2 night stay at Rangiwahia hut.
Didn’t have a pen on me for the log book.

Nice and easy find just after I'd visited the nearby IP address. You guys rock!
I have been hankering to do this walk to 'Rangi Hut' since before we lived in Kimbolton and moved away 8 years ago to pursue our adventure of living and moving house in NZ. It wasn't as far as I'd originally thought and walk times of 1 hr 35 to the hut from Renfrew Road end (up) and 1 hr 5 mins back from hut to car (down) were pleasant, and reasonable.
An upsetting week with the loss of one of the stalwarts of the UK side of the family passing away on Thursday morning, UK time. A weekend of reflection, respect and a few chances to get out into the great NZ outdoors to clear the head was gratefully accepted. Saturday I had to head into Palmy to buy a new funeral suit (my old one had 'shrunk' somehow), and catch up with my son and a walk alongside the Manawatu river whilst remembering 'Grandad'. Sunday entailed a trip up to Rangiwahia hut with my daughter who had travelled down from Auckland.
Thanks to all CO s for their hides.

Went up to Rangiwahia hut with my beautiful KiwiKatieG. Weather was quite horrid this trip. Sideways gale force rain is not fun. Loved this cache hide. Such a cool idea and well made. FP from me for this one. TFTC
Had a dense moment...brilliant hide.

Yeti had grabbed this cache before the start of the walk while waiting for me to arrive, and forgot to grab it at the end. Thankfully Yeti reminded me. Nice easy find in the first place I looked, although, still not quite where I was expecting it!
The walk up to Rangi and back (especially back) wrecked my shoes. (photo) Thankfully we did not have to abort the trip (unlike when the entire sole came off my tramping boots on a Taranaki trip. Luckily that happened only half an hour in!!). So it looks like I am going shoe shopping tomorrow!
Heading up to Rangi and back with YetiNZ for a simple day walk to get one of New Zealand's oldest caches. Man, has this track changed since I was last here, maybe 25 years ago. There was no slip then, and no formed wooden fronted steps. The great views are still there, as is the interesting approaches to the bridge.

Some time (years) ago I set myself a goal of getting the top ten oldest (still active) caches in the North Island for the Old School Challenge, GC325CX. Todays goal was my 9th find on this list, GC34F. I left Wellington at 05:30 (avoiding the typical weekend traffic issues) for a 09:00 start from the Rangiwahia track carpark where, after a discussion about this at an event last weekend, The Seagnoid would be joining me for the walk. Cyclone Fili passing through the country during the week caused me some concern but the weather gods smiled and today was a stunning Easter Friday day, perfect conditions for caching.
Having arrived early I got myself prepped for the walk and then took the time to grab this cache while it was all quiet in the carpark. All good here, TFTC.

Grab this one on our way out. Had a great day on the walk. Next mission was the glow worms cave on the way back to Palmerston North. Nice hide. Tftc.
Decided to head up to the Ruahines for a walk to Rangiwahia hut. Taking the backcountry roads to get there and collecting whatever caches I can along the way. Arrived after lunch and still had time to collect all the caches up to the hut followed by an hours side trip to the Secret tarn. About 4 hours all up. Enjoyed this hide when I finally worked it out. Thanks for the smiley.
Wow, what a clever hide! Definitely makes a change from sistema containers and pull bottles. Nobody here in the car park after returning from the snow at Rangi hut, which was very cold. TFTC!
Nice hide! Came to go to Rangi hut to see if there was snow and there was, then had finding this to look forward to after the wander down. Very quiet on the track today. TFTC
Found after returning from a walk up to Rangiwahia Hut
This one looked very similar to another a bit further up the track

Apologies for the late log but only just realized this cache hadn't been logged when clearing out the Garmin GPSr. Thankfully the find date was recorded and we have photos from the overnight tramp. On the way up to Rangi hut for an overnight stay with one of the Jr. Cachers and some friends during Wellington Anniversary long weekend. Great hide for the location a quick find for the start of the journey. TFTC.
Ending the hike on a high by finding this cleverly positioned cache. Clever!
Grabbed this one after my Ruahine climb — around 2½ hours there & back. Took a short elimination search to uncover — not seen one of those before, cheers rattll!
Thanks rattll for placing this cache
Many years ago when I was in the HVTC I had the pleasure of tramping with Tony and recall his fitness and enthusiasm for the Ruahines... it was fitting to take a moment to remember him here before heading up to Rangiwahia Hut for the night
Cache nice and dry, and thankfully there were no muggles around so I could do a quick sign and replace... TNLNSL TFTC

*Well what a day I had...*
My plan for the day was to knock off Ruahine for the Old School Challenge. But I had a bit of a mishap...
Having parked up at the Ruahine Rangiwahia track start, I'd got my gear ready to hit the hill when I stupidly let the car door go... I'd parked on a slight lean *so of course it shut leaving my backpack containing the car keys still on the seat.* **Course it locked!**
What to do? Well there's nothing to do really. I tried to smash the back quarterlight window but to no avail. At least I had my phone in a pocket. So having rung the AA I just had to wait! **What a Wally!** Yes the AA did come all the way out from Hunterville to rescue me. Of course it turns out Santa Fe have a deadlock feature so even after popping the button the SUV remains locked. **Nothing for it but to smash that window, rescue the keys and click that fob.**
After cleaning up the glass and doing rudimentary repairs to cover the window it was too late to head up to Ruahine.
But this clever cache I found before all that!
So often this far out in nature the cache is usually just another pill bottle. So absolutely deserves a FP for making the effort to create a good geocache experience. TFTC

I wanted to do the walk to Rangi Hut over the school holidays and find the four remaining caches. All were found so a successful day!
An appropriately named cache in the car park. Quick find at 8,15am with no muggles in sight.

Quick find today with TwigNZ on a walk up to Rangiwahia Hut to replace the container for Ruahine GC34F.
I had heard a lot about the beauty of the tramp to be had up to Rangiwahia Hut from friends who have done that walk previously, and had wondered about how I might manufacture a chance to go and experience it for myself. So when I heard that GC34F had been Muggled but that the cache had not been lost but was available to be replaced then I was delighted to volunteer to go and put it back in place.
Also answering the call was PGCNZ, so he and I made plans to meet up in Palmy and get the old container before heading off to the trailhead. We took it upon ourselves to add a little camo tape and an official Geocaching label to the lid of the container to hopefully help prevent any future muggling from well intentioned tidy Kiwis.
Of course, doing this tramp meant that we would be able to do a few more along the trail such as this one. When we had parked up we realised that this one would be done as we left the site on our way home, and this is exactly what happened. The Hint was perfect for us to be able to make the find. A nicely constructed cache, for which I am happy to give a FP.
Thanks for placing this cache here, and helping to make my day memorable.

After staying the night in Taihape, gorby and I make our way to the start of the walk up to the hut. I had considered staying the night, but the carrying of sleeping bag, gas stove, food etc up a hill convinced me that an a daypack was the way to go, and that an overnight stay was not required for this visit
So first cache for the day. A bit of a quick stop, using the nearby amenities.
Just recently became aware of "poo pots" and "biodegradable bags" which can be purchased from DOC $5.
Its all about being responsible out in the bush. So much to learn and discover

Thankfully a clever creative cache, and its a good one to start with on this caching adventure with gorby

Wow, this was going to be the start of a loooong walk and very steep to head up this mountain. I have stayed the night with rustynz and her son in a backpackers, we have come down from Auckland for a few days to do some caching as per usual.
She and I are hoping to get the old cache a little bit later, but here's it's a pit stop for the loo and then we're off. So while rusty was attending to those matters I found the cache, but I didn't show it to her, I let her find it to see what kind of disguise it had! Nice work there rattll. The we drove up to the actual carpark and get into it! Gorgeous day for it, quite overcast.

Have seen this type of hide before but this is the biggest I have ever found. Well done and thank you for for your time at constructing it. It’s a beautiful view except for the wee green building blocking part of the view! However many people appreciate this building. TFTC

Found 9.50am
Day one of our Manawatu Road Trip.
Decided to aim for caches we had missed on our last 2 trips.
Caches spread over a large area but managed to get most of our target.
Sorry but as our cache collect was big, paste and copy had to be our option.
Thanks to the CO's for all these cache placements. SLTFTC

With Gap (of Fap and Gap), and Mr Davidson (Davidson clan)... The weather was much improved, and it looked like we were heading for a cracker day. Our cache planning took on a bit of form as we spied a rather large 'S.H.I.E.L.D' on the horizon... We decided to skirt around the geoart today, and visit any hides still on the geomap. All logs were signed with our first name initial - BGH...
We were expecting a free run up to the carpark. However, there were a couple of gates and a small herd of stubborn cows to navigate past. Once at the gateway, it was a matter of following the instructions before the cache was in hand. Curiously, a young woman appeared from out of nowhere. She seemed apprehensive and unsure. We went exploring and found the carpark above, and the woman and her partner preparing to take the walk. TFTC.

This carpark was empty today, but there was one car in the upper carpark.
It's a very scenic carpark on a nice sunny day like today.
Nicely hidden cache. I don't think I have seen one quite like that before.
Thanks.

Success on our mission to get Ruahine, one of the caches needed for the North Island Old School Challenge. Collected this one after coming back down the hill, 2 h 45 min up, 1 h 30 down. TFTC
Despite the accurate coordinates, we took a while to find this cache. We actually looked in the correct location at an early stage, but missed the cache. After reading some logs, we realised we were looking for something other than a basic cache, and some re-examination soon revealed this very nicely hidden cache, which gets a favourite from us. TFTC

Found at the start of a day tramp up to Rangiwahia hut and beyond (for some) with the Thursday trampers from the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing club. Twenty of us in the group. This hide is really well done, and the contents are in excellent condition. Another favourite added, thanks rattll.
Last cache of the weekend. Enjoyed being up in the snow despite not getting any views. Easy find! TFTC
Nice to get all the caches on the loop walk this weekend. Thanks for placing them all here. Always enjoy this walk even in the snow.
quick find before heading off to the hut, a nicely hidden cache, hubby hasn't seen the car yet but it needs a good clean from the gravel road.

Sorry we got the times wrong, I will use my glasses next time. It was lovely seeing Geocachers we know and knew ones we have never met before. #3950. Joint {FTF}. FDF. I had made the call quite late to attend todays events. Thought I would be up in Rotorua until Sunday. But getting back to Wellington on Friday opened up the opportunity to drive north again and visit the Ruahine Ranges. Its my first time tramping in the Ruahines as well. Infoferret and her two sons arrived at 7am outside my place and then it was a three hour, 15 minute drive north to reach Renfrew Rd. Bypassed many unfound caches on the way but did not stop. At the CITO event we were informed that 4 new caches had been placed today. This was the first of them that we found and signed. Not first to the cache but there within 10 mins. Nicely camoed hiding spot. Thanks for hiding it here rattll
Located this one fairly quickly, signed the log and re-concealed.Well done with the design of this cache. And joint FTF too!Gets a fave from me! TFTC!
What a welcoming sight, after screeching into the carpark worrying about being too late for the Cito, we were greeted by the welcome sight of the crowd of fellow cachers, an amazing view, and a well crafted cache just waiting to be signed! Got distracted by the views though...10:43. TFTC.
Me and Scoria came out here to do the cache in trash event (CITO) the the event at the hut at the top of the hill
With the CITO over it is now time to head on up the hill to the next event collecting caches on the way up to the top of the hill were the hut sits
Thanks for the events

We missed this cache at the beginning of our walk, so grabbed it on the way back down. A quick find was a relief as we were ready to head home. left a trade beside the cache that wouldnt quite fit in the container.

Found after walking down from A Ruahine Ramble Event at Rangiwahia Hut on a lovely sunny Sunday. A joint [FTF] with other attendees. Thanks rattll for this new cache. .
Found with Infoferret (who is only just getting around to doing my logs, thanks Mum!)
My gps wanted to have some fun with me so it led me about 10m away from actual GZ. After no joy at phantom GZ I got a friendly nudge in the right direction from Mr rattll and sure enough a clever, well concealed cache awaited. After finding the cache I looked back at my gps and sure enough it was saying 'look here'. Could've taken me straight here ya know gps!

# 954 Saw someone fossicking around this feature when i arrived for the rattlls CITO event today, and I had heard there were a few caches to be released today so I put two and two together and voilla - a joint {FTF}! Handed off DangerSAM to Karen to free the hands - otherwise if I put him down he is inclined to eat the smaller rocks.
A great cache container, that I imagine quite a bit of mechanical effort went into building! I really wanted to take the rattll rock but thought better of it and left it for someone more deserving! Thanks for a cool cache, and giving people another reason to visit rangiwahia hut!

Lucky we remembered we still needed to find this one after our second descent of the day. By the time we got here we were a bit tired and sat down amongst the rocks to find it. A well constructed cache. Thank you so much for a great day Joint [FTF]
Time for another geocaching trip with my matey 2 Bulbars, having just lost our good geocaching buddy Priceless Time (Michael Price) we decided that the best thing we could do was a weekend out caching in his memory. RIP Priceless, our thoughts are with you on your caching journey. So, after a quick drive down from New Plymouth we got into the caches: on Day 1, first to the west of Bulls then to the East and South finally into Fielding for the night and a few urban caches. Day 2 work our way back north and east to the CITO at the Rangiwahia bush track. Then back out to civilisation and home.
Nicely made cache of course. Is this a mass FTF?
Mission accomplished, this one is a wrap. Thanks for the cache from Blenheim Bear!

Made the trip up the valley for the CITO and event. Took longer than I was expecting so am glad I left early enough. Didn't realise that there were new caches released as part of these event so that was a nice bonus. Plus the joint FTF's! The weather was perfect for a days adventure. I ended up doing 16kms by the end of the day as I headed up Deadman's track for another cache (my legs are still hurting a day later because of that).
Quick find here and an awesome hide.
Thanks for the caches, the events, the company and the smileys!

Turned up for the CITO and Hut event with D6NZ. He quickly grabbed this cache while I was still messing around at the car. I left it for the end of the day. Really good camo, really good day.
As I log these back home, this is my 1000th find (woo hoo). Pity I didn't see that coming, I would have done it at the start like D6NZ, paid attention to by logging sequence and number 1000 would have been the main event at the top.
Oh well great day, a number of group {FTF}, a collector pet stone, and Geocaching souvenirs for the days activities, cant complain about that. Milestone day all in all.
Thanks for organizing it all Mr and Mrs Rattll.
