We hope you enjoyed exploring and discovering the local history in the communities of Aoetearoa New Zealand. The Tuia Matauranga GeoTour has now ended. Thank you to the community for all the great logs, photos, and Favorite Points over the last 30 months. It has been so fun!
Found with vdh56 on a trip to stay with eve07. Lovely man doing maintenance on shrubs telling us he has plenty more in the shed
There were several bike-riding muggles in the area, so we had a good look at the art work. They eventually rode off on the trail, and left us to figure out the cache location. Sad about the carved graffiti, but some is quite old, so becomes historical in its own right. Pity the drawings are disappearing. TFTC.
Finally I had mastered this cache after a dnf two times. Have to confess I had to paf to get this and really...how dumb I felt after I found it. My GPS was out by alot but understandable with that cliff face. TFTC drawp
Found it with Cyclicalcaching great n out PWGT roadtrip! It's really cool to be able to see Maori rock art. Thanks for the cache
Great little spot, but it’s so terrible how many people carved their names into the stone before the gates were put up…
All is well here!
Anyway, thanks for the geotour cache!

Eventually found but not before going for a wee knee scrape. Disappointed in the rock art.TFTC
Easy find, on a quiet day in the area. Awesome surroundings here of course. Thanks for the history and your time with laying this cache. Found with coconuts3 and having a ball.
Having fun with busy paws on our way to Oamaru. All on our own so easy to look around. The pigeons were cooing happily. Thanks for the cache drawp.
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit … we are now parked up at Awamoko for a couple of days, exploring in & around the local area … we went for a bit of a drive this afternoon and we thought it would be rude not to check out these caches on the way … found this with no issues, log completed & cache returned … pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally … TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #2,295 for us.
I have stopped here on caching business before and it is always nice to come back for a new smiley, that is once I had located the right hint object.
It's almost the end of our road trip. Today we spent a while at the rock painting. We discussed about graffiti and how everyone over time writes or draws on "public" walls. It's a bit sad most of the drawing were taken to museums. But there still is a few to see. Thanks for placing this here. Both container and logbook are in good condition, best to access from outside. No need to crawl between native planting.
Today cycling the alps to ocean rail trail an awesome experience. With a few caches to provide the cherry on top. TFC
What an amazing place! Totally love following this series of caches on our trip around Aotearoa. Found with Piwaka54. TFTC
We've been past a few times, but had some time to come back. Coords weren't great, but the hint narrowed it down. Third time lucky. Had to wait for muggles a couple of times. TFTC.
Found this one today on my trip through NZ. Sorry for the late log - these got lost in my phone. Thanks for taking me to places in New Zealand that I wouldn't otherwise have seen.
Signed log and collected codeword.
Thanks for the cache and the geottour

Day 3 of my Geotour. Busy place this morning. A camper van, two cars and two cyclists. Went and looked at the drawings. Failed to be impressed. I guess I was expecting them to be more like the aboriginal drawings I’ve seen on Oz. I think I was also expecting them to be more than 150 years old. Once the muggles had dispersed I made a quick find. TFTC
I made harder work of finding the cache than I needed to. Got there in the end. Sad to see so many of the rock paintings have been taken away. TFTC
Made my way along to this, but had to wait for a few carloads of people to disappear. Once they had left, I had no issues though. Pretty cool that the artwork is still visible though.
TFTC drawp, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 7 find(s) of 9 today, making this find #2601

#9429. I am travelling around the central South Island on a road trip with Infoferret. Been covering some distance searching for geotour caches from Canterbury to Otago and along the West Coast. Really enjoying my first visit to the Waitaki Valley. The Maori rock art has been intriguing. A mix of something old, something new, something ruined and something truly special. Had a quick look and then searched for the cache. IF had been here before and where she was standing sort of gave the show away. Nice quick find and sign. Thanks drawp for the cache.
On a three week trip to the lower South Island with tmann421 hunting caches.
Enjoyed the trip around and the challenge of the finds.

Another place we stopped at on our cycle tour two years ago . Good opportunity for a lunch stop. I wish they could get rid of those pesky pigeons though. Their cooing really gets to me. If only.....
Thanks for the placement drawp.

Great way to finishing my day, I bet so many people just drive past this, not today, there would have been about 14 of us here looking at the art work, thanks for bringing me here, gets a fav point, tftc drawp
Awesome stop - cant believe no body else is here. Really really interesting. A favourite from me in my TMGT (and some PWGT) road tour. Thank you for this cache its fantastic. One dosent have to work out tourist spots to stop when picking TMGTs they are already mapped.
Caching around the back country picking up a few targeted caches plus more. Not targeting TMGT caches but happy to stop here for the smiley. All good here tftc
If my memory serves me correctly these drawings/paintings seem to be getting fainter. No problems with finding the cache although I did search in more than one place.
I enjoyed coming back to this place. Having a short trip from Invercargill to Christchurch with Infoferret finding lots of caches, in particular the TMGT caches for me.
The cache may be signed with our individual names or ‘IE’.
Many TFTC.

Nice sized parking area for my tug and caravan. I needed to be quick finding the cache before the fast approaching frontal weather arrived. Made it in time.[^] Thanks for the cache.
What an amazing site. Very interesting rock formations and rock art. Thanks for placing a cache here, will give it a FP
One of a few quick little stops on way to Mount Cook today. Great to see the rock art too. TFTC
# 1891 Down in the South Island again to finally finish off these TMGT caches... and pretty much nothing else. Got the fam and a campervan and will travel.
Was a race between the mower men and some other tourists as to whether I could get the cache signed and back. I won!
Rock art was a little disappointing but the location is quite nice. Thanks for bringing me here drawp. All good inside. Dropped TB.

Of course we have been here for the previous cache, as well as when there weren't any caches. Always interesting to see the new developments and information signs. Excellent job on the cache writeup - thanks for the excuse to pause on our journey.
Away in the Geocamper on a TMGT mission around the lower South Island. Amazing how much traffic there is on this road and as we arrived at GZ a work truck turned up, then another car with a family on board, and we thought we would have the place to ourselves. Soon found the cache, just before the family arrived, and remembered to get the code word. There were dozens of pigeons nesting in the cliffs above making lots of noise and lots of guano.
Thanks drawp. Now for the southern most caches. Almost there.

(# 6079). Day 6 of my South Island odyssey. Today is getting some caches between Timaru and Dunedin as well as having a good look around. A quick find after viewing the rock paintings. Easy as no muggles around at all. Everything in order. TFTC
Nice quick find although i was a bit worried as there was some one painting the fence up a bit but he either hadnt found it or ignored it . Of course a favourite for the tour TFTC
A nice revisit to this spot! I had to wait out some muggles but after that the coast was clear! TFTC!!
Day 12 of my 2020 NZE (New Zealand Experience).
(My apologies for the delayed logging but I'm in catch-up mode)
Seeing as I can't be in America right now, I'm touring around the South Island instead. During my time here I am aiming to find as many of the TMGT caches as I can (preferably all 41) and also as many Virtuals, Earthcaches and Letterbox Hybrids as possible, plus any Trads or others that will fill a hole in my D/T grid, my Jasmer grid, or else the last 3 remaining Hidden Dates on that grid.
Today's plan was to drive from Timaru down to Dunedin, following the coast but with plenty of side trips to get caches targeted as per above. I have been so lucky to have dry conditions my whole trip so far, with the sun really putting in an effort to convince me it wasn't winter! I didn't mind the chilly starts knowing that the rest of the day was going to be great caching conditions.
This cache was most definitely on my 'target' list for the day, being one of the TMGT ones. I had visited this location before on a previous visit about 17 years ago so have seen the drawings. There was another group of visitors whilst I was there, so had to wait a little while until they were clear of GZ before I could make my search but I had no problems finding the cache, and there were no issues with either it or the log so once signed everything was replaced back exactly as found and I was on my way again.
Thanks for placing this Cache.

Found. Quick find. Neat place! Shame to see people deface places of history! Fortunate enough to see a bit of what is left. Thanks for the cache!
I had visited here pre my geocaching days. So good to come back to see these drawings again. This is as far as I’m coming in my detour from highway 1. Tftc
A great spot for a geocache.
Jude_E and I stayed in Waimate tonight. The plan is to explore the Oamaru area today. I haven't done this since the Geofest in 2017. Thanks drawp for creating this hide. It was find 8600 for me.
======== NZ Mega 2021 ========
Planning for the NZ Mega 2021 event is well underway. It will be held in Auckland over Labour Weekend, October 2021

Was looking forward to seeing this site but found it a real shame about all the graffiti that has been placed on these walls over the years which detracted from what would have been a great piece of history. No problems finding the cache, TFTC.
Rare day off work, nice day for a drive to the Oamaru area. Drive past here most weeks, good to stop to have a look. TFTC
Second rock art stop today. Great place for a TMGT cache drawp. Its a pity the art isn't in the best condition - without the signage it would be hard to decipher any of it. Enjoyed my visit. I haven't noted it but I think the log must've been full as I left a sheet of notepaper here. TFTC # 15,560
On my way home from visiting grandchildren after lockdown and time to do some geocaching on the way home
So pleased to visit here

Found on a trip south with a major objective being to clean up TMGT caches - unfortunately this was cut short by the NZ-wide lockdown announcement in the afternoon and I had to turn around and sprint north so as to be able to get back home to Wellington in the next couple of days. A quick find here - I have visited this place before so didn't need to stay long. Signed log, recorded code, TFTC!
Such an amazing way to show case New Zealand's History for us and also overseas visitors. So as My week in the South Island greatly changed I decided a wee roadie trip was to unfold on TMGT caches plus a few others along the way from Bluff to Picton via Coast to Coast. Very scenic and fab weather at this time of the year. Most interesting caches with some a REAL Challenge but so much fun. Many thanks to all CO's and I'm very pleased that ALL smiles on the South Island Series is now complete. Wee Roadie ended up being 3000km's of pure fun yahooooo.
Nqf. Unlike some of the caches placed along roadsides, this one was really woth stopping for. To S it’s what geocaching is all about - taking us to p,aces we might not have otherwise visited so have a well deserved Fav point. It’s a great shame that the Maori art ar is no longer here but the cliffs are awesome. the cache was a nice quick find. SL. TFTC.
#17968. Second TMGT of the day. Cache was a quick find, and then we went to look at the rock art. Very interesting. TFTC.
Day 2 of StreetWalkerNZ and my long weekend in and around Oamaru. Today we wanted to polish off the remaining unfound Mighty Oak caches as well as bike some more of the A2O series.
Pretty sure we have found a cache here before but happy to return. We had the place to ourselves - apart from the large number of pigeons that have made a home in the rock face , so were able to look for the cache without muggle interference. Had a look at the rock art afterwards. Thanks for bringing me back here and TFTC.

We found this cache during our holidays, at we visited the Maori Rocks!
Thanks for showing!

I just about left without looking for the cache! Then had to dodge muggles... Found!
Day two of a two day mission to try and find the Canterbury and Otago TMGT caches. Today I’m heading back to Christchurch. A slightly more relaxed day beckons with only 4 GeoTour caches to find, and quite a bit of time up my sleeve.
An interesting spot. Had a look around before looking for the cache. No worries there at all. Logbook signed and code word noted, I had a short break before hitting the road to Timaru.
A big thanks to all the people who have placed and maintained caches in this series.
Cheers and TFTC
Thank you for this cache as we enjoyed the rock art and wouldn't have visited here otherwise. Found with mr c on our travels from the UK thank you.
An easy find but we didn't get this codeword either. An interesting place with Maori rock art. It is well set out with good signage and a good size car park. Even though it is late in the day there was another couple who arrived just after us and some tourists arrived as we were leaving. That cliff is amazing with all its patterns in the sandstone and the places where the pigeons roost. They were all starting to come home while we were there.
Found on the 4th with yk83. Sorry for the late log but trouble getting Wi-Fi.Tftc
Day Three Of Our Journey to South Island With Squirrel Nutcase.
Today's mission to travel from Dunedin to Christchurch to find all the TMGT caches and a few others in between.
First 4, very nearby caches to our digs this morning then on our way with a coffee stop at Palmerston.
Caches with some great stories, including maori art work with caption of a sailing ship, miles inland from coast then a walk along moa hunters cache. (real effort on the stones)
Arrived in Christchurch to our motel that Mrs Fap had arranged earlier as she didn't want to go through the issues we had the previous night to find accommodation. Normally Squirrel Nutcase and Gap fly by the seat of their pants finding this.
Now to complete balance of TMGT caches around Christchurch and meeting up with fellow cachers doing the same thing.
Last cache for day and we find a pet rabbit at GZ, we guessed it had being left there by an unwanted owner so contacted CO who said he would get in contact with the SPCA. (hopefully bunny has found a new home)
Big effort by our team today and mission completed.
Many thanks to all the cache owners for placements.

With Fap and Gap... Late last year, we started to plan for a trip to the South Island - The goal was to complete the TMGT trail.
Dunedin - Christchurch: This was much further along the road than we travelled while at the 2017 Oamaru Geofest. In reality, we should have come out to visit this significant site then. We wondered how this site might connect into the overall Captain Cook theme, and then we noted the link. Maori depicted horses and riders, and large sailing ships in their artworks dating back to the 19th century. Is it possible that these artists saw Captain Cook's vessel? Interesting... We had to work around a small group of visitors, but successfully managed to bring this one in undetected. Another TMGT code for the collection. Thanks drawp and TFTC.

Team BOP on another crazy mission! Labour Weekend 2019 - flights were booked, plans were made - Waitangi Weekend certainly came around fast. The goal here in the South Island was a combination of Jasmer caches, CANZ Caches, some high favourites and of course - the 41 TMGT caches we’ve got left after clearing the North Island last month.
This tour has been so much more then a challenge or compulsion. The historical significance alone has made it worth the journey and I truly thank all the CO’s for helping to make this happen. TFTC, see you at the Mega

Interesting place. Thanks.
I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these cache. Many Thanks for bringing me here. Cheers.
