We hope you enjoyed exploring and discovering the local history in the communities of Aoetearoa New Zealand. The Tuia Matauranga GeoTour has now ended. Thank you to the community for all the great logs, photos, and Favorite Points over the last 30 months. It has been so fun!
We were in town as part of a family roadtrip holiday. We came here on the recommendation of a local friend who Mr HeMaLuDy bumped into at the ANZAC service this morning. Interesting location. Nice quick find. TFTC.
Decided to check this end out while we were in the area. Watched a fishing boat go out across the bar. Would be interesting to watch on a rougher day. A few cars around but made a nice quick find. Thanks for placing this cache
What’s the best way to get soaked ins rainstorm?
Go out in a breakwater!
Fortunately parked right next to it, grabbed it, back into the car, signed and back in place.
Fortunately it was easy, but I definitely got wet!
I’m sure this is a great view when it’s nice out!
Thanks for the GeoTour cache!

Lots and lots of rain! Cache was quickly located by Cyclicalcaching. Thanks for the cache
Everything bang on. Surfies out, kite surfies above the Grey, neat watching these and the waves going past tftc
A straightforward find towards the end of the Wilderness bike trail. A lovely spot to stop and take in the sights. Thanks for placing the cache
A few people admiring the treacherous seas, but it is easily retrieved. Nice hiding place. TFTC
Husband found it straight away while I was mucking around with the geohound who is on a go slow. Not too many muggers about. TFTC
We had some time to fill in so thought we would take a walk to the end of the wharf. There were lots of muggles on the wharf today, but they took no notice of us as we made our way to gz to find the cache. Cache was soon located and retrieved. TFTC
Parked at the Freedom Campsite next at the start of the breakwater, so it was just a short walk for the smily face. TFTC.
Couldn’t find this one myself, I was looking too obviously!
Jordy found it straight after I got him out of the car. Not too many muggles around but a lovely view of the beach
Love the cache

Last time I was passing through Greymouth I had run out of time for the 5 TMGT caches here so they were one of the incentives for being here today - holymu's event being the other. Came out here first hoping there wouldn't be too many people round only to have the place to myself! Nice hide. The sound of the waves crashing was exhilarating! TFTC # 17,876
Day 7 - Labour weekend extended road trip with Kiwicampnut - relocated to stay south of the ditch.
A fine day on the coast.
Although she already had this, Kiwicampnut kindly brought me here. Muggles not far from GZ but managed to retrieve, sign and return while they were chatting.
Best view along the coast we've had so far.
Thanks for the cache gracie7 + Mum

After four days of sunshine we stopped here for coffee before heading over the hill and see some of the town. Took a bit of time to get my hands on the log. Thank you for the placement.
A good find on a cold and blustery afternoon. Thanks for the cache and for bringing us here
Found on our trip down south at christmas time caching with xsaveya.
Lovely places we are viditing great finding caches in interesting places

#9326. Its Good Friday. The start of an Easter road trip to the South Island to pick up a swag of geotour caches in Canterbury, West Coast and Otago over the extended Easter break. Doing this trip with caching buddy Infoferret as we decided to share the cost of a rental car and fuel plus share the driving with the long distances planned for this trip. We hired a hybrid car and it was a good choice as it was economical but easily made it through all the long distances with no concerns over fuel tank capacity. Today we are heading to Hokitika via Hanmer Springs, Lewis Pass, Reefton and Greymouth (just 25 litres of fuel used for this day).
Night time had descended upon us as we entered Greymouth. After doing caches on the north side of the river we crossed the bridge and made our way out to the port. In the dark I couldn't see much sadly as I had hoped to do a bit of bird watching here but it was too late in the day now for that option. I soon located the cache but my fat fingers pushed it in too far. IF came to the rescue and with her finely crafted and delicate embroidery fingers slipped them in and retrieved the cache for signing. Signed the logbook and replaced everything as found. Thanks gracie7 + Mum for the cache and giving us yet another excuse to stop on the road to Hokitika. Time for just one more stop today.

The first stop of the day on a maintenance run out passed Hokitika. Cache and log fine. Only just started on the 2nd of 3 pages. Shouldnt need to replace for a while yet. Interestingly there was a large colony of gulls here and it was awesome to see a few different types at once to be able to compare them. All good here. Happy Caching.
Great to see the dolphins from here. Quick find but hard to get out. Don't push it in too far. tftc
Great find with Victoriousone, brilliant weekend on the West Coast, can't wait to come back tftc
Busy as here today cyclists, cat ,motorhomes ..with abundant bird life ...mainly seagull grabbing a free feed lola nice fast find and sign code word recorded ..thanks Gracie & Mumnice history
Weve been out here before, but on our bikes. This time we parked and walked the last 400 meters. I want her a fishing trawler bob its way out of the river and the the sheer force of the waves pounding the breakwater on the other side. The memorial to lost seamen is quite sobering. Thanks for the cache Gracie7 + mum
Taking advantage of the fine weather to explore Greymouth. Really enjoying the history lessons. However, the wind is blowing a hoolie and I am just about being blown off my bike so we may have missed a couple of caches along the way. Cache is all good. TFTC
Time for my first of 2 visits over to clear up the TMGT and PWGT caches on the West Coast
Blowing like buggery here, and a few people parked up eating their lunch... I had no issues making the find though, they were preoccupied. Interesting read on the page. Wonder what those people would say if they saw the country now?
TFTC gracie7 + Mum, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 3 find(s) of 13 today, making this find #2472

What a stunning view today - in all directions! Lots of informative signage and great view and enough space between people movements to slip in and pick up this cache. All in good order here. Was nice walking out here instead of driving. Gosh i love TMGT road tripping and its still only day 1!. TFTC.
Lots of people out here at this time of day. Someone fishing on one side and surfers the other. Made the find easily thanks.
Doing a road trip as I have to wait for my villa to be refurbished. What better way than doing a road trip geocaching. Thanks for placing and maintaining.

In the area for the day today and the TMGT caches are high on the priority list to finish off. Drove to this one, ignoring the vehicle GPS which was trying to direct me to the other side of the river . A quick find in the obvious place. Signed log, recorded code, TFTC!
Here as the lone geocacher with a group of cyclists. No time to sign the logbook before we were off again so I attach a GPS reading to prove I was here and I've sent a photo of the hiding place ( I did find it ) to the owner. TFTC.
Found easily enough, but retrieving it was the issue with muggles about. Chose my moment carefully and they were none-the-wiser. Tftc
The bar looks treacherous, brrr. The container and therefore the log rol is a little wet. Have tried to dry as best as possible.
Found in the pouring rain. What a spot!! The waves were so huge!! Would love to come back and watch a boat come in. Spectacular!
I'm in Greymouth for a couple of nights, after hiking the Paparoa Track. I decided to hire a car today to get out and about, explore the area and grab a few caches. Timed my visit here perfectly with a nice sunset. A few people around so had to pick the right time to grab the cache, which was easily found. TFTC!
After a big day exploring the West Coast we returned to Greymouth late in the evening and grabbed some fish and chips for dinner and headed here for our final TMGT cache find before returning to Christchurch in 3 weeks time. I found it really difficult to grab this one it was pushed in a long way and I had to get my son with much smaller hands than mine to grab it. While we ate a fishing boat came in through some rough swells while the fisherman's young son who had been bought by his grandparent's watched on. It reminded us of the Lotto add that use to be on.
On our way to punakaiki, stopped at the grey river mouth. Voila a cache to find, with P&Vee. TFTC
Thank you for placing a cache here found with watcache on a south island adventure. TFTC
Nice to come out here today on a sightseeing visit to show a friend round. Always time for a cache stop! TFTC
On a trip to the coast and caching along the way. Lovely spot at sunset. Found with everdene22
In Greymouth for the weekend with lytteltonwitch. We came with a list - to find the TMGT caches, the Adventure Labs series and any other finds were bonuses.
Thank you for this cache, gracie7 + Mum. Obviously we were delighted to find it (in the rain). Spectacular GZ.

I decided to turn this one into a walk and parked at the start of the road. A good blustery 3km walk in total (with a bit past the fishing boats to make it a round number). It's good for the soul! Had to be careful the log didn't blow out when opening the receptacle! Tftc!
Thanks for putting out this cache for woolwood9 and I to find!??
SL **tm/ww NZ** (may just be a black smudge on the many wet or plastic logs)
*We soon had another good cache located!*
Great spot, good hide for the area, quick grab while nearby muggles were looking elsewhere!

(# 6189). Day 12 of my South Island odyssey. Today is getting some caches around Greymouth as well as having a good look around. A quick find. Everything in order. Please note the log is full. TFTC
Easy find had to be stealth in front of the muggles, Fraser blocked the view.
It's getting towards evening and we are heading back to Zara for a sleep after a long day. There she is, on the other side of the river. Another TMGT found, only one left to go... (one left in this area. Loads more to go!!)
Time for a new log here, there are just two spaces left!
Taybeedragon and I are off on another weekend's exploring - again! This time to the West Coast. The company owes me some time so I took Friday off. Lots of rain on the way down, but after that it was a nice cloudy-but-not-rainy weekend. It never rains on the West Coast when I come to visit! Parked Zara in Greymouth and on Saturday came down this way in Toby. Taybeedragon had an excellent trip planned - two cycle trips, some TMGTs and adventure labs, 74 caches all up today.

Day 5 of my 2020 NZE (New Zealand Experience).
(My apologies for the delayed logging but I'm in catch-up mode)
Seeing as I can't be in America right now, I'm touring around the South Island instead. During my time here I am aiming to find as many of the TMGT caches as I can (preferably all 41) and also as many Virtuals, Earthcaches and Letterbox Hybrids as possible, plus any Trads or others that will fill a hole in my D/T grid, my Jasmer grid, or else the last 3 remaining Hidden Dates on that grid.
Today was going to be one of my favourite drives, up the West Coast taking in all that wonderfully rugged coastal scenery between Greymouth and Westport. I've been lucky enough to do this route a few times, and it never fails to stir my sense of joy and wonderment.
But before I could get that started, there was the small matter of having to find the 5 local TMGT caches. This was my first cache for the day, and a dramatic one to begin with. There's nothing like a location like this to bring home the raw power of the sea, and it didn't disappoint. The wind was howling like a banshee as I left the camper and walked towards GZ, and the whitetops on the waves were being whipped into a decent spray.
The Hint meant that I was able to find the cache quickly, which I was very thankful for. There are now only 4 available spaces left on the log, so a replacement will be required soon. But I was happy to sign and replace this one quickly so I could get back to the relative comfort of the camper.
Thanks for placing this cache.

Quick find with only one car nearby. Managed to find during a rare break in the rain today. Log wet. Dried inside of container but couldn’t do much about the log. Always visit here at least once on every work-trip to the Coast. TFTC
Some big crasing waves coming over the top of the bocks, quite impressive to watch. No boats though, next time perhaps. Cheers for the TMGT, glad to tick a word off.
After doing the first few TMGTs earlier in the day we headed to Punakaiki and then returned to Greymouth to do this one. It was a powerful storm, we’ve never seen anything like it except for a movie called The Perfect Storm. We cautiously drove out to GZ, other people were filming the massive waves in awe. The sea was almost boiling, and the roar of the surf was incredible. Huge waves were crashing up against the concrete and the wind was so strong we almost lost our hats. We made quick work of finding the cache and spent a bit of time running from one side of the wharf to the other to capture the spectacular sea. We hear it’s wild down here but we’re sure this mustn’t have been your average day due to the non touristy people jumping out of their cars to film it. Dried off and drove all the way back to Punakaiki to get a FTF on a virtual after that!! A long day but totally worth the two days quick trip from Auckland.
Thanks for the cache, our 91st on the Geotour.

Such an amazing way to show case New Zealand's History for us and also overseas visitors. So as My week in the South Island greatly changed I decided a wee roadie trip was to unfold on TMGT caches plus a few others along the way from Bluff to Picton via Coast to Coast. Very scenic and fab weather at this time of the year. Most interesting caches with some a REAL Challenge but so much fun. Many thanks to all CO's and I'm very pleased that ALL smiles on the South Island Series is now complete. Wee Roadie ended up being 3000km's of pure fun yahooooo.
