Visiting Ohakune for the weekend from Auckland, Sunday and heading home. Yesterday had visited Tangiwai disaster site, and today Ohakune Station, then last spike and viaduct, so now some more railway history. Useful hint, easy find, signed and replaced. TFTC
Book is starting to deteriorate, and bring a pencil/pen. found a 250-find geocoin also, cool cache!
Took us under 10mins the kids had soo much fun my wife has been coming to Raurimu since she was a girl and hadnt walked the track soo was a special little activity for the family we picked up a travel bug from the north Whangarei area and left it here for the next people to carry it on to its next destination
What a cool little find! We were down in Otaki and at the end we decided to go for a fun day and walk Mt Ruapehu. But we only made it halfway anyway we were driving to Cambridge then we decided to find these two geocaches grandson didnt want to come so we left him there.TFTC
Great place and we saw a freight train with heaps of cars The little fella got a bit carried away hiding it so all I can say is more rocks
Staying at the camp next doors with other ladies from around the NI. We were off rafting down a section of the Tongariro River, came back to camp with an hour to spare before dinner. What do you know? A cache a few minutes walk away. The model of the spiral is great as you can see exactly how the whole feat was engineered. Thanks Grandads geeks for this cache.
Couldnt see much today in the rain. Muggle upstairs probably thought I was totally nuts.TFTC
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit & doing the things that we want to do we are staying at the Kiwi Camp Freedom Campsite at National Park Ive always been fascinated with railways (my Father worked on the railways), so thought wed drive out to Raurimu & have a look and, of course, do some caching while out and about this was an easy find, log signed & cache container easily replaced pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #4,837 for us!(Note Well: Plastic Cache Container is broken & needs replaced sorry I didnt have anything suitable on me).
TFTC! Greetings from Estonia! Found this cache while travelling around Tongariro National Park.
We could see people walking up the track in front of us so slowed our pace and then waited underneath for them to finish viewing but that gave me the chance to make the find unseen! The plan worked. TFTC but was annoyed when 5mins down the road a train came through!!! If only!!
Out for a central north island mission with Reschedule. Circling around Ruapehu today. Find 38 of the day.TFTC
Left our Basecamp of Rotorua to explore the cacheline around Ruapehu and the central north with Kre8ive, stunner of a day! TFTC! #38 for today.
After dinner we were passing by and the engineer was keen to check out the spiral. Unfortunately the trees have grown taller and there is very little to see if the track from the platform. A nice quick find if the cache here with the hint. TFTC
Rascher Fund. Die Dose ist nicht mehr ganz heil. Danke frs Herlocken sagt die Hamburg Hummel
After finding another cache nearby, went after this one too. Found it without much effort. Not quite as good a view from the platform as we thought we might get!. #6859. TFTC.

Snowfields not open so had a go at some cacheing today, weather is wet and cold.
DNF, the muggle who was watching me from my Raurimu Rex DNF was also watching me here so I bailed quickly again.

Its a really interesting place. The railway spiral is impressive.
Sadly the box is broken and the logbook full of mould.

After exploring the area for nearby caches, we got to this one. Nice and short walk towards gz. Cache was quickly found. It was good to be in the company of an engineer who talked me through what we were looking at. Thanks for the cache!
Visited this cache ages ago and signed the log, but forgot to log it. Today I revisited with jägersmum again. No train going through for us today. TFTC
Interesting place with the bonus of a cache. Found quickly but the container is broken. TFTC
Some interesting history here. Container is broken and logbook a bit moldy but dry. Thanks for the cache also!!
It took several minutes for me to find this. I found it wedged under a very heavy rock, so heavy that the container is now a bit mashed. I put it back so that it is still hidden, but not being crushed by that heavy rock. TFTC
Found by Blenheim Bear on a wee day out looking at bridges nearby. Thanks for the cache all good today. Blenheim Bear
When traveling back to Whangamomona from National Park, this particular cache was in my hit list. As in if I only find one cache today it MUST be this one. This is because it is a date placed which I did not have and I'm wanting to find all of them. I have been sitting on 6 days yet to find for quite some time so to find two of these six in the last week was quite something.
I made my way here expecting to be able to see the spiral, I finally worked out what and where I was looking for As I was searching for the cache, I didn't hear a person walking up the track and they would have got quite an eyeful of me lol. Poor guy.
I also thought it was pretty neat to not only find a cache for this date placed challenge but to also find the cache on it's placement anniversary so I'm awarding it a favorite point

With the Geotour coming to and end soon Yvettetb and I decided to go on a road trip to collect Tahi and Rua. Of course I had some puzzles at various places to collect and a few special types were added to the list too.
This was day 3. Today we ended going from Arapuni, to Taumaranui, Raurimu and then various places around Tongariro National Park. We then carried on south through Ohakune and past the Tangiwai disaster memorial to the Gumboot capital of NZ.
I had previously been up to the geotour cache right near the Raurimu Spiral but we hadn't had time to do this one as well. Today we did and it was a very short walk. No trains in sight today. Found the cache quickly as the muggles were just leaving as we arrived. Thanks for your cache highlighting this interesing piece of railway engineering

This was a nice find with Mrs Muggle while taking a break from driving today. We found the cache very quickly, and it is in great condition.
Thanks very much for the cache.

I was just mentally composing my DNF log, then had another sweep around before I left - and there it was.
Thank you for keeping this cache going for so long, Grandad Geeks - 17 years is pretty impressive. I came for the GeoTour cache & left with 2 extras.

Found with Kauriforest. No convenient trains to appreciate the big picture of the spiral but the model was impressive. TFTC
Took a wee bit of searching around but found nice and dry. Train coming around the spiral while we were here. Double excitement.
After logging a DNF on a previous visit I was pretty keen to return and get a yellow smiling face instead of the blue. My timing wasn’t great and I was caught in a downpour cycling here but that was quickly forgotten with the jubilation of finally locating this one (plus I had a coat anyway ). Thanks heaps for enabling this again!
As previous finder, we couldn't find anything at GZ. We explored the area quite a lot, but there was no cache with a 1/1 rating around. Nice to see a model of the loop and spiral.
#718. Mr and Mrs Northwood headed to Ohakune for a couple of nights to walk the Old Coach Road. And of course this meant a number of opportunities to look for some caches in some interesting spots. We were not always successful - sometimes because we're being a bit more careful these days!
Mrs Northwood had heard a lot about this spot. However, there is now not a lot to see! However, we made a quick find. Signed one of the many pieces of paper that have been added.

A good stop after a very quiet lunch, ( apart from the gale outside), at the Chateau. I well remember my train journey from PN thru here, to start a new job in Invercargill 1985. Wonderful train trip. It seems there are spirals in many countries so I don't know if this is the first. There's a triple in Japan. Tftc
A nice quick find thanks. We have tried to get to this location several times, but today we amanged to get there. A nice viewpoint and model of the spiral. Fun to see Thomas on top of it!
Ms_KR and I are off on a wee tour of the North Island. A quiet day around National Park today, feeling glad we went up to the Top of the Bruce yesterday as tday is blowing a gale, with a bit of rain..
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

Well the road trip continues with Flowerydaze on a mission to seek out PWGT2's and any others on the way. No problem here as all was quiet, no muggles around Thanks for bringing us here Grandads Geeks
Up from Kapiti on a caching trip with Talla64 finding the PWGT caches and checking out any more we came across. This was a very interesting one in a lovely area. Thanks very much for placing a cache here.
A quick detour with Itchyfeet2020 to find this one during our roadie trip for PWGT caches around the Mountain, we were up from Welly. A quick and easy find. TFTC.
Great to pop up here, such a interesting spot. Was keen to come here after returning back from the PW up the road on our round the mountain road trip today. TFTC.
Was a good find amazing to see the spiral train track working to get things from A to B
Really nice area. I've driven past many times. Wasnt up to going up stairs today. Cache was a quick find once I spotted something out of the ordinary. Love the train tracks lining the path tftc
A quick find here today while making a pilgrimage around Mt Ruapehu finding some cool caches in some great spots. TFTC
A few of the Team SEAC crew were in town to complete the Tongariro Alpine crossing which we successfully managed yesterday - woop woop. The plan for today was to get out and stretch a little and of course find some caches.
Unfortunately my legs would just not allow me up those stairs (they twinged a little when Mr NZTravellers and Mr Stik-a-Crane bounded up them!). I had a chuckle at the wording the institution of engineers worded their plaque....
Thanks for the cache.

In town with my good friends from Team Seac to do the Tongariro Crossing. We did the crossing on the Friday, so to relax the following day we went caching of course. So we explored the local areas. Sorry for generic logs. Log was signed Team Seac or Seac to save room on the logs.
The day after our group from Auckland had completed the Tongariro Crossing, and were on a bit of a high, decided to take a look around the area at some local caches, not knowing local would extend to Taumarunui....needed to be back in National Park to sort out food for dinner, so off we went....

Had a weekend in Hamilton, stopped on my way home after some rain. Thanks Grandads Geeks for the cache.
Day 7 of a road trip with Saethwr around the lower North Island. Caching not a priority, but we will get a few.
Taumaranui to Ohakune.
Stopping off to view the spiral was a must do. The bush on the hill has grown a not since I last stopped here. But thanks tothe model and Google maps we were able to work out where the line runs. Too early to catch a train - passenger ones come through in the afternoon and freight ones overnight.
Found an empty eclipse first, thought "oh no" but Saethwr soon had the real cache in hand. We CITOed the eclipse tin.
Thanks for the smilie Grandads Geeks.
