6 months ago, during a frenzy, we said to ourselves "why not going to the mega in Adelaide for the leapday". From scratch we moved on to preparing an 18-day project in Australia. Our objectives are simple, visit a small part of this immense continent while validating a few caches. There are so many caches (impossible to do everything) that we will select. Our plan will allow us to visit Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Mount Gambier and finish in Adelaide for the famous Mega.During our stay we will log PestiHoot for Pestinette and Blackhoot.During our 5 days in Adlade, we visited the centre and around while following the caches and labs. We resolved some mysteries before our trip. We made some great discoveries and great experiences. Thanks to the caches we visited many sites evoking Australian culture and history. Thanks for the cache and the discovery of beautiful or original spots

After a few old caches so old the roads had changed and were no longer safe this was a nice change, quiet, lots of parking and quickly found in great condition... even the original book!

Trip log:
When it comes to our trips for GreyHams and myself, opportunity seems to play a big part in the timings.. be it an event, sales on airfares or car hire, in this case it was my visiting SA and being there that worked so well for this one!

So it was a drive up to Adelaide to collect GreyHams from the airport and then a trip that would see us ending up in Mount Gambier in the South east of SA, close to my family holidaying nearby and conveniently located that GreyHams could fly home to his. Perfect when a plan just comes together!!!

The primary target of the trip was counties, about 21 in total and we had almost the complete opposite need of counties from each other. Of course we also targeted other caches of importance, oldies dominated the state but there was DT, virtuals, webcams, Ausmer and types. If your cache made our list it had a quality we were wanting, or as GH says, we were waiting for a ferry or a plane!

What a variation in the places we visited, from Adelaide's suburbs out into the hills, the ferry across to Kangaroo Island for the night and the many coastal regions through Victor Harbour and Goolwa. Through Murray Bridge and out into Mallee Country to Lameroo before turning and finding a great bed and meal at the Keith Hotel. Continuing South into the very bottom of the SE of SA before returning north slightly to make the plane, in time and that arrived! So much wild life through the areas and locations of interest, it was great!

Had to love the Santas through the Adelaide hills, seems that stuffing a Santa suit is an art form all of its own, and entertained us for a long time! Kayaking to an island on Kangaroo Island was fun and although the donut from Port Elliot bakery had to pass with masses already queueing... the chunky steak pie from Willunga Bakery might not have been as good as a pepper pie later but it was still damn good! Its the little things sometimes!!!

Many thanks for your cache that led us about on a varied and very enjoyable trip!

Nice oldie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This trip came together due in the best way! Aquilus1 was over in SE SA visiting family, yet had a bunch of counties unfound between Adelaide CBD and Victor Harbour, I was missing all the counties south & east of Strathalbyn. What could be better than flying over from Canberra and being picked up at ADL airport and knocking of ALL the counties all the way to Mt Gambier, where I flew out. Last minute Covid shenanigans in Sydney & Melbourne threatened to derail it, but all good.

Of course our trips are more than just counties....we have a range of targets: Oldies, webcams/virtuals, larges with challenges and D/T thrown in for fun. If you are reading this log, then this cache had some quality we were hunting (or we were waiting for ferries or planes!)

We saw such a change in countryside, from Adelaide Hills, to Kangaroo Island, up to Borrika and then down to 'the Mount'....and the Santas! I can see areas where christmas lights arent the done thing, its stuffing your own Santa and posing them in the front garden, saw some very funny examples, we were chuckling for an hour I swear.

South Australia has such a wealth of very old caches, its wonderful. We grabbed lots of oldies and are now just a single find off our Ausmer challenges (just need to get to Melbourne or Brisbane for the last).

Heading down to the Fleurieu Peninsular today and targeted a couple of caches that would fill gaps on my Jasmer grid, so a scenic route, rather than the direct route was taken. Somehow we landed in the middle of a cycling event and our route to one cache was closed and our speed was restricted en route to this cache which was frustrating, but eventually we crossed the finish line, literally. We waved to the small crowd as we crossed, although I’m pretty certain they weren’t there to see us drive across, more likely they were supporting the cyclists, then headed at better pace to the cache. Found with fluffymaxi and JayG10.

I started 2019 with two Geocaching goals. Half way through I took on another. Getting any of these goals did not involve going caching today. Surprised

Then Groundspeak wanted to start a streak at the end of August to get a souvenir. So I did. Surprised And I am still on that streak so I guess I now need to achieve 4 goals. My longest streak was 46 days when they last wanted a streak some years ago. So I needed to go and grab a cache today to see if I could do better than last time. Razz

But caches close to home are now in short supply so I grabbed Sal and we headed from Nairne to The Range so we could get the daily cache....this one. Big Grin 34 km/s each way as the crow flies, but we aren't crows. [B)] Luckily it was a pleasant day for a quiet drive in the country. Arriving at GZ it took all of a few nanoseconds to spot Badgers Rockery. Smile Now for the drive home! Twisted

Doing a bit of backroad exploring while I have the days free and grabbing a cache daily, pulled in off the road to grab this one.

Found a Scouts TB that wasn't logged to be here so took it and left it elsewhere, these off the main road hides are terrific, can stand at GZ, sign the book, stretch a bit, have a tea party or anything and still won't have anyone passing by checking out what you're doing.

Touring Australia having left Perth in late February we are leisurely touring South Australia.

Currently camped with our Caravan at Kuitpo, we had a late start to the day but decided to head out and keep our fingers crossed that the rain didn't get too heavy.

Managed to visit Willunga and we were very impressed with this lovely town. Even managed to grab a late lunch at a cafe, which was really really yummy. Hope to revisit next week. Wink

Of course we grabbed a few smilies whilst here and loved the history and views shared with us today. Big Grin

Heading home but just had to make 1 more stop. Quick find on an interesting gravel road in this wet week we are having.

Doing a clean up of caches that we have found but not logged. This one saw us being watched by some local cattle and wildlife with a few kangaroos very near by, but no sign of badgers. They did prove to help us with the muggle driving out of the nearby driveway who was very curious about what we were doing on the side of the road.
