It took me more than a few minutes to work out what was going on here and to find the cache. The coordinates pointed me to a place that I felt did not match the hint or the terrain rating so I investigated several wrong places first. Eventually, I did go further from the track and higher than I thought I would need to. It was a pleasant surprise to see the cache come into view. It is always great to find a cache that has been in place longer than I have been geocaching.

07-Sep-24
Great find with kids

08-Mar-24
Had to wait for our return to find this as workers nearby on outward leg. Needed to read previous logs, higher than expected

24-Feb-24
Found it alright .....by reading 3 previous logs. It is a good 10 metres away from the fence heading back toward the cycle trail. You can do it....probably 10 metres from the track as well. tftc

21-Jan-24
Followed the arrow and then also a bit of a trail through the grass for a nice quick find. Nice to find such an old cache. TFTC # 20,844

06-Jan-24
Start small go larger. TFTC. Love this area

30-Dec-23
Took 3 of us 30 min to find. Is more like 10m from track and about 3m above. Cleared the vegetation off the 3rd rock so all 3 are visible. Just need to brush the vegetation to one side to see the crevasse and container.

16-Nov-23
What a beautiful spot to stop by. Did the short walk and enjoyed it a lot. We seem to be bar searcher though and came up empty handed. Thanks for showing us this location anyway!

10-Nov-23
no luck today...

16-Jun-23
The cache is still there and in good condition. I might look at upping the terrain rating slightly. Note the third boulder is now hidden under some bushy growth. I noticed that there is now phone coverage here which is good as I previously have had to use my offline function

15-Apr-23
Found it but no pencil so unable to sign as I didn't have a pen. Will come back at some point with pen---

17-Feb-23
Cache is still there, didn't have any trouble finding it. Followed the GPS and it was as the hint described. My GPS was very accurate with all my caches today which it isn't always but definitely helps a lot. Thanks for the cache lyttletonwitch.

11-Feb-23
Couldn’t find anything! Lots of good potential hiding spots though. Started spitting so gave up

Found on a nice day out, "teaching" a newly made geocacher. A new geocacher? Newly new? Something.
I wonder what that little brick "hut" was used for.

Left Akaroa today and headed back towards chch. Decided to do the rail trail on the return trip. Managed to find some parking for the caravan and then we set off on our bikes.
This was a bit further off the track than I expected and there are so many rocks. I luckily spotted it and made the find. Cycle shoes are not good on rocks.
TFTC

10-Jan-22
Found while riding the track. Nice hiding spot. Soon located and had the log signed. TFTC

Tftc. Very tricky find. Easy once u work out what rocks they are. A bit more like ten metres off the track

23-Sep-21
Found on today's 34 km bike ride from Little River to Kaituna and return. Nice quick find at the end of the first leg of our journey. TFTC lytteltonwitch.

08-Sep-21
As we are now in level 2 from 8th September geocaching is now permitted again

26-Aug-21
Disabled as we are in lockdown and geocaching is not a permitted activity during lockdown. Didn't think that I would have to disable caches that are not easy to get to without driving but too many idiots ignoring level 4 rules

18-Jul-21
Found on a cold, wet July day.. no pencil in the cache, so I signed it with a stick, and have sent photo proof to CO. Tftc

04-Jul-21
Coming to GZ just after sundown meant the find was not quite straightforward, but all good after a short scramble. TFTC!

We are not sure if we had phone reception here as we didn't need it. Caching with the newish GPS and it was proving good, with a quick find here. SoBad tossed the cache to Mrs so she could sign the log - and she tossed it back.
Thanks.

During our holiday in New Zealand we have visited both the North and the South Island. We saw a lot of highlights of this beautiful country, but there is so much more to see. So many highlights, so many caches! The geocaches showed us a lot of special and interesting places. Sometimes a quick find, sometimes we had to search longer. A few DNF's, but that doesn't matter. We loved New Zealand and we hope to come back some day!

Today we have found the cache "Opening Day Little River Rail Trail (Canterbury)".

lytteltonwitch, thanks for creating and maintaining this cache!

Greetings from the Netherlands,

12-Aug-18
Weekend trip to Akaroa. Thanks for the hide.

10-Jun-18
No rain, no work, perfect reason to go on a caching adventure! A lot of fun except one cut on the finger ad one poke into the eye. 200km in the car, which involved a slight backtrack for an unexpected errand, and 20k steps. Overall a very nice day! Thanks to all the CO's for placing and maintaining the caches!! This one took me an undue amount of time to locate, but I collected a good bunch of parsley in the process!

20-May-18
Wow it was a windy ride. TFTC

We found it - after a morning spent riding the Rail Trail with Mr 6. We stopped at the picnic table for a drink... and one thing led to another - and before we knew it we were caching! Haha! Sadly we didn’t have a pencil, and the pencil/sharpener mentioned are long gone. Thank you for the cache!

A nice place to stop on the trail with seats, etc and a quick find for us here. Found with AorakiSheep

11-Sep-17
Had half a day available to do some caching along the rail trail so it was worth a bike ride as there are quite a few caches along here. Found this cache after a short search, it was quite a bit further from the track than the hint suggests.. Signed log, TFTC.

JSando and I were lucky enough to find super cheap tickets to Christchurch in the boxing day sale, so here we are for a long weekend of sightseeing, eating, drinking and or course caching. After leaving the CBD area we headed south, staying at Governors Bay, but having many hours between landing and being able to check in, we headed further south for a small loop of caches before checking in for a rest.
Due to our lack of sleep and the godawful weather, we were looking for reasonably quick finds. This wasn't what we were looking for, but was a great little adventure.
We wandered in from the car park. GZ was clearly going to be through wet, thigh high grass, with rocks all through it, and up a Mountain. It was my turn to make the find, so I stood on the pathway for a long time to make sure my GPS was well settled, preventing the need for any false starts. I began picking my way through the long, thick, wet grass, tripping over rocks and losing my footing frequently. I finally made it to the bottom of the mountain and steeled myself for the mammoth climb ahead of me. I began by leaving a trail of breadcrumbs on the steadiest of the rocks used in my climb, in an attempt at making my descent easier and safer. I made it almost to the top and as I looked down, I see JSando and a team of clowns holding a net, running left and right, left and right while yelling out that they'd catch me, and a little critter scrambling over the rocks below me, eating up my breadcrumb trail. I turned back to the mountain and spotted the cache and began to manoeuvre myself into position to grab it. I was standing precariously with my legs spread wide, with my right foot standing on a very small flat section, about 5cm sq, of one rock and my left foot balanced on a sharp pointed piece of another rock, straddling a yawning abyss with no perceivable bottom. I reached forward and grabbed the cache, and signed the log. Upon returning the cache to it's rightful place, I turned around to begin my descent. The breadcrumb eating critter was long gone, as were my trail markers. With a poof of smoke, the clowns and net disappeared, leaving JSando standing far far down the mountain alone. Their disappearance startled me and my foot slipped. Oh bugger! I was falling. After falling for what seemed like hours, but was probably only seconds, I landed halfway down the mountain, thankfully missing the abyss, with my sizeable butt wedged into a chasm between two boulders. I stretched out parts of my body to work out what I may have broken, with JSando asking if I was okay, while snorting with laughter. Thankfully, the only thing broken was my pride today. I will have some beautiful bruises to remind me of this cache in days to come.
Thanks for the cache, the location and the adventure.

Have been meaning for a while to head out this way and find some of the smile series, but that meant finding a day we weren't busy - no playgroup or anything - and a day it wasn't raining, and preferably not 100 degrees either!

Today looked good - no plans - cooked food in fridge - time to head out! Although it got much hotter than I'd expected by the weather report! - It was meant to be cloudy!

So I strapped the baby to my back and did a few walks in & out of the car. - Save me too much walking & be more efficient! Also to not burn the baby Razz

Agree with previous logs that none of the numbers helped! I only found it after I went much higher than I thought was neccessary.

TFTC!! Smile

SisterCorny travelling Asia and Oceania for four month, now in New Zealand.
Our last day in NZ, flying out of CHC tonight, we drove very slowly from Little River back to the airport, stopping for views, coffee and caches. We had a great time down here and hopefully we will come back in a couple of years...
Very nice area here, but we spent too long: None of the numbers in the hint helped us really, so it was more or less a trying around... But sucessfull in the end. TFTC

As this cache has been found I am enabling it again but will check it when I get home from my travels.

20-Apr-16
Choc fan and I decided to bike a bit of the rail trail today. After a bit later start than we had hoped for we set off with Mr5 biking and Mr2 in the trailer. We stopped here for a rather late morning tea and a bit of an explore. Mr2 liked the little dynamite hut and didn't want to leave. Co-ordinates were pretty good for us but I sent Mr5 scrambling up the bank. He soon found it so it is there and in good order. Thanks for the hide.

17-Apr-16
I ran out of time to sort this during the weekend. I will fix it in May when I get back from my trip.

13-Apr-16
Add another to the DNFs on this cache.

Today I had decided to do another bike ride signing off a few puzzles that I had solved a while back (nearly two years) and the odd trad that was on the way.

Cheers for the cache.

24-Oct-15
Cache was found on Day 3 of the NZ MEGA 2015 caching trip, as Gunnie69 and myself headed out towards to Akaroa area with Green Geckos, Kyzabra and Jinta29, to tackle the Smiles Series, before heading back towards Lincoln for a few choice smilies, and then finish off the day at the Mega site, with some lab caches and a few stray caches. Big Grin

24-Oct-15
Bit of Mega caching today. Out with a good bunch of Aussies. Great cache. Thank you lytteltonwitch for placing and maintaining this cache. Smile

24-Oct-15
The Mega weekend was all about puzzles for Ghostgums and I, but when your on the trails, it's hard to walk past the traditionals when you are going within a few metres... Wink

So, while out and about with Jinta29, Kyzabra and The Green Geckos, we paused to scout around for this one and quickly had the cache in hand. With our details added to the log, it was tucked back in place and we carried on to the next. [^]

Cheers DOCRangiora.

Kyzabra and I headed over for the Christchurch Mega from Perth, WA. We teamed up with our caching buddies from Queensland, Gunnie69 and GhostGums for a bulk of the finds. We were joined by The Green Geckos for this leg of our adventure.

A lot of planning was involved with literally hundreds of puzzles solved and we targeted some highly favorited caches as well as those that filled gaps in grids and calenders!

We had a fantastic time caching in the cooler climate and with no fear of snakes or other nasties! Christchurch is my old home town but I did not know about caching when I lived there so it was fun exploring the City with a different objective.

We were glad to grab the smiley on this one and we replaced the container as found. Thanks lytteltonwitch for placing this and bringing us to this spot!

This is my find #4190 and find #17 today.

24-Oct-15
A caching expedition that has been months in the planning. Jinta29 and I headed over from Perth, and met up with Gunnie69, GreenGeckos and GhostGums from QLD over here.
Our combined brain powers in the months leading up meant we were able to concentrate on the mysteries, and other unique Icons plus a number key D/T combos and jasmar dates.
We have had a ball over here. Personally my first trip to NZ. The cache owners have been great and Ive enjoyed meeting people aling the way.
i apologise in advance for the generic log.

lytteltonwitch - Kyzabra found your cache Opening Day Little River Rail Trail (Canterbury) on 24/10/2015, 9:33 AM. This is my find #4088 and find #16 today. The cache is in good shape and we replaced it as found. Thanks for placing this and bringing us to this spot!

20-Oct-15
We were all still wandering down the rail trail grabbing caches here and there and having a nice old time.
On the way to this one. we were taken with the carvings in the rock nearby, and after a brief search, the cache was found and we all signed our lives away, then toddled off to the next one.

Thanks lytteltonwitch for the cache.

Cheers

Find #6507

Out and about today with a small aussie contingent of cachers in a pre christchurch mega caching run. Today I was with Skullracing, Coruze, Geo Princess, troo bloo and vk3gs&cc. The aim was to hit the smile series and for the first time in a while I was able to use my GPSR instead of my smartphone which I was happy about. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for a bit of a walk.

This was one of the best spots along the trail today. We were lucky enough to find it in the first place I checked.

Thanks to lytteltonwitch for the cache. TNLN

We were looking forward to this trip to New Zealand.
After hours of flight from Belgium we finally arrived, picked up our Road Trip Special and started going.
First we organised a little event to meet the locals. It was a blast and we've met some nice people!
After that we did a whole tour around the South Island in 3 weeks, sleeping in the car or our tent.
It was great!

We slept in the car park the night before and went for the caches today. Got this one fairly quick.
TFTC!

I am returning home in October and will be doing a check on all my caches as soon as it is possible.

A successful find after finding some caches along the Rail Trail. The notebook is very wet & soggy so couldn't log our find in the notebook. As it was around lunch time we found a beautiful sheltered spot in the quarry. We took the container & contents with us in an attempt to dry it out in the warm sun (see photo as proof we found it). Sadly the notebook is too soggy to dry out in a short time. If we had carried another small notebook we would have replaced it. Once we finished our lunch we placed the container & contents in it's "cache home".

Cache is very wet and pongy. Needs maintenance.
