Logs for steeleye

01-Apr-24
After coming down from Black Mountain Reserve, it was nice to find a cache where the vegetation wasn't trying to hack me to pieces! Thanks, Tanker.

A long trek from home in Civic for this one! Thanks, DSD

That's done the two easy ones in this series. Going to have to go for the harder stuff soon! TftC

26-Mar-24
As others have noted, the log was a damp, black bio-hazard, so I wimped on signing it! TftC

A controlled burn here a couple of years ago got rid of a lot of the rubbish undergrowth (= scratch & thorny) and this is now a very pleasant and shady area to walk. TftC.

Thanks, Tankengine!!

I've walked up this fire trail to Black Mountain Drive a number of times - it definitely gives the lungs a good workout! However, this time I came downhill to get to the cache. When the trail is dry, it's a bit like walking on a squillion marbles, and not really recommended - if you lose your footing it's quite a long slide to the bottom! TftC

Came at this one from the east, which was a bit dodgy for this septuagenarian! TftC

Fascinating location. However, while this septuagenarian is reasonably fit, he is not as nimble and sure-footed as he was 30+ years ago, and he had to be very careful (perhaps I just went in the wrong way). I would advise geocachers of, shall we say 'more mature years', to look for the safest way in and out! TftC

I found the hint a bit inaccurate (hence kept looking in the wrong places). I would change the hint to GUERR ZRGER YBT, for those who want to use it. The GPS on my phone was also very flaky in the vicinity of GZ and I had to restart it several times. There was some water in the log container which has left the log a bit damp (but still usable). TftC

Great view of the lake and down to the south. The 1920 photo on the info board shows how much damage we can do to a pretty fragile environment by chopping down everything in sight. The present-day view shows that we can fix it up again with a fair bit of effort and commitment. The result is about 6 sq km of revegetated native bush that is open for enjoyment by both people and wildlife and which is only a couple of km from the CBD. This is why I love living here.TftC

In all the years of walking the tracks and trails of Black Mountain, this is the first time I have been along this one - and it was definitely worth the wait! Tftc

Continuing to be led along by bubble & squeak on a very mild afternoon. TftC

Straightforward find on one of the best Black Mountain trails. TftC

11-Mar-24
Straightforward find - and I lost count of the number of spider's webs that I managed to walk through. A pleasant mild day. TftC

Gradually working my way through the Black Mountain caches. A wonderful place to walk, particularly when, like today, it's not stinking hot.Log book is pretty damp, but still usable.TftC

09-Mar-24
Nailed it on a Saturday morning. TftC DarkSide

Nailed another of DarkSideDan's on a Saturday morning. TftC

Another log that was damp and had a bad dose of the Black (mold) Death. Not signed, but I will try to add a new (non-lethal) log to the container in the next few weeks. TftC

06-Mar-24
Found it - thanks bubble & squeak

Found it - but didn't sign it as there was no log sheet in the micro part of the cache. Strange. I will try to remember to insert a new log sheet next time I'm up this way.TftC

Nailed it! TftC

04-Mar-24
No probs - TftC

15-Feb-24
Straightforward find in a beautiful piece of bush. TftC

03-Feb-24
Container broken, log soaked. Will replace soon.

28-Jan-24
Pleasant change to find a cache in a strongly vegetated area where I didn't get hacked to pieces! TftC

Being such an open and well-travelled location, I had been hesitant to spend too long looking for this one at any one time. On the third go, I finally cracked it - very cunning! TftC

27-Jan-24
I've kayaked to this spot from the lake on a number of occasions and would have to agree that it is a beautiful part of the campus. Sometimes it can get a bit pungent when the algae are in full bloom and you feel like you're mowing rather than paddling! TftC Flintstones.

Pleased to see that the container for the cache container was not the pungent corpse of the carp that was lying nearby! TftC GrimRaider.

26-Jan-24
Nice straightforward find on Australia Day afternoon, with hardly a muggle to be seen. TftC Tankengine (formerly TankengineThomas?)

21-Jan-24
Thanks for the cache.

20-Jan-24
Didn't find it because of the group of young people using the next tree as a backdrop for an arty-farty fashion shoot! (From a distance, I thought they were looking for the cache and not being very subtle about it.) I'll go for this one again when things are a little quieter.

Assuredly a nano-sized container which required pico-sized fingers to extract the log sheet, and a micro-sized pen to sign it. The legibility factor in the signing is definitely also on the pico scale (ie very illegible). TftC

19-Jan-24
Found it without too much trouble. Finally made it to cache No. 300, with a 10-year hiatus between Nos 283 and 284! I'll try to find a replacement cache container as the original has lost its 'attraction', so to speak. TftC

17-Jan-24
Neat little cache. Pretty wet afternoon, so no problems with muggles in what is a pretty open place. TftC

16-Jan-24
Found this a few days ago, but I had forgotten my pen! Did it this afternoon and took a scrubbing brush to remove the worst of the green health hazard that was hanging off the container. Many thanks StrangeTrousers.

14-Jan-24
New log and cache container installed. Still BYO pen

Bag added and platypus returned to its burrow.

The odd things that you find in the Canberra bush! TftC

10-Jan-24
Log and container replaced on 10/1/2024. Ziploc bag still to be added and I forgot to replace the platypus (will do it when I add the bag). The old container and log were completely black with mold and could be used as a biological weapon!(FOTW - Slovenia will also be replaced when I can find a small enough container.)

07-Jan-24
Couldn't get this one a couple of days ago when the nav on my phone wqs insistent that I was absolutely stationary in the eastbound lane of Belconnen Way! The satellites were better behaved this afternoon and I found it with no probs. TftC.

Log is in pretty feral condition, but I managed to find a bit that was only mildly damp to sign! TFTC

Pretty sure that I found the cache site. However, I made it to 71 with only the odd broken toe and decided that this one was not worth the risk of something more severe. Unlike previous loggers of this cache, I piked!

The mold in this container was so black that I wasn't game to open it and therefore didn't sign the log - looked like it had a good dose of Black Death! I might try to get a replacement container and log in the next few days. TFTC

Nice and straightforward. Thanks for the cache maintenance, Tiz. TftC

06-Jan-24
Found this one a couple of days ago ... but forgot the pen. Tried again today, with the pen. TftC

05-Jan-24
Done and dusted - 2nd of 3 on the way home from the supermarket. TftC

Funny how a nice strong-looking track on the geocaching map can become much more subtle when you are scrambling through the bush. Last one for the afternoon. TftC

Nice and straightforward - and no grass seeds! TftC
