Description

[Machines of War] Veterans Reserve is the 64th cache hidden by caughtatwork.

Veterans Reserve is a small reserve on the corner of Mary St and Melbourne Rd, Spotswood with the Spostwood and Kingsville RSL just beyond.

One of the few features of this reserve is one of the various Machines of War that have served their country well and have now been retired.

I drive past this particular machine every day after dropping one of the caughtatwork kids off to school and thought it would be an interesting locale to bring the finder.

I am unsure of what this particular machine is named, however its use is obvious and in its heyday its destructive capability would have been astounding.

You are seeking a small 200ml sistem container hidden upon the Machine of War.

Back here after visiting Scienceworks with my daughter and grandson. I forgot how busy that place is during school holidays... Brick Wall
Found the cache quickly enough but the cache contained no log book. I rectified that and replaced in as found.
Thanks for another excuse to visit this area caughtatwork AND during school bloody holidays too Wink

A maintenance run this morning for some of the local caches that need a welfare check. This cache was indeed missing and has been replaced. The hint has also been updated and a spoiler picture added.

Needing another couple of finds for the month I headed over the bridge this afternoon.
(Slim picking out in the SE now)
Parking nearby I had the area to myself. Searching low and lower, high and in between to no avail.
Even a PAF didn't help here today.
Thank you for returning my message at this time of year c@w. Much appreciated.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
I might just watch this one for a while now...

I've driven past this most days whilst visiting Newport, over the last 3 years. The SOTN game finally gave me incentive to stop. Its a nice park and really quiet. So glad this wasn't a micro. Well done on such a brazen hide with such a large cache.

#GA2052 - 15:20; In Melbourne with the geohoney for a few days to visit the geoteen, who had lectures today, so we headed off to Maribyrnong as it had two things going for it, retail therapy and caching! After completing the CO's Edgewater trail, I checked in with the geohoney, who was still happy to shop, so I set off and collected a posse of moveables further up the road. After collecting the geohoney, we headed off towards Williamstown before heading back into the city. After crossing under the freeway we managed to make it around the corner to the park for this cache after a close call with an impatient truck when the driver cut quickly into the inside lane as the traffic in his lane had stopped! Anyway, once at the park I managed a relatively quick find on this cache, much to my relief, after some bad experiences with hides on this type of equipment! Just happened to check the app and lucky me a this cache was only metres away. A brief search and the sneaky hide was found. Nice war memorial and thanks for highlighting this great place.

A muggle arrived here at the same time as us and proceeded to sit on the fence and light up!! He wasn't in a hurry to leave when he finished either.
We feigned interest in the host object for quite a while and then when we finally got a chance to search it wasn't in the obvious places.
The sneaky placement was discovered eventually though.
Thanks.

First timer here. I looked all over, especially focusing at the parts closer towards the ground but was unable to find it :'(

12-Jul-15
Pulled up across the road...and then sat there and looked. I worked out it's been 20 years since my last visit to (what was then) the Yarraville RSL Club. Spent a few pennies there I can tell you....

As for the cache...well, blow me down, the rain had stopped! So I could take my time and search...and luckily it wasn't long and the cache was in hand. Signed quickly and then back to the car to head off to one last cache for the day. Although the rain had stopped, I was looking forward to my motel room.......and the heater!!!

Thanks caughtatwork....cache looks like it has only just been put there!

took me a while (first cache), but got there in the end! luckily I had a toddler with me to hopefully justify an adult climbing all over this thing.

I was out here for one of the Newport Lakes puzzle caches and decided to drop by this one and its GC neighbour for a look while on the way home. It had me going for a little while but I finally spotted the stash at 12:45.

It was so nice to see a 'small' Clapping rather than a micro or (shudder) a nano on one of these things Very Happy.

Found while on a caching night run with trailrunning. This was an easy find and we solved the answers to the other GC cache in the same area. TFTC:)

22-Aug-11
It's a warm Monday night and a great night for caching. jsmyong55 and I met up at around 5:30 at Swinburne for run on the other side of the Westgate Bridge. We had a good run at the start with about 6 finds in half an hour, but slowed from there for various reasons. All in all a good few hours. This cache was the second for the night, and we gather the clues for the nearby multi while we were here. thanks caughtatwork for a night bit of history.

03-Aug-11
Well, it is too nice a day to be sitting at a desk all day. A quick trip over the bridge to see how many caches I can grab in a 30min lunch break seemed in order. Only 2 (one GC and one GA) found today in 45mins due to poor planning but that's still better than working. Used hint for a quick find to avoid looking suspicious to passing traffic. TNLN. Thanks caughtatwork.

27-Jul-11
The toddler helped enormously - brilliant decoy for the endless traffic while I wondered where a lunchbox would live on such a structure. Finally worked it out without the hint and signed the log, though extracting the militant mini took longer.
Thanks caughtatwork for a non-nano, must check out the rest of these.

22-Jul-11
Straight forward find, should've picked this one up at the same time as the GeoUS listed cache. Plenty of dried grass stuck to container, so cache is resilient to maintenance. T4TC.

251. Wandered over after filling up to find FFP and Scubacrazy666 conversing. Which they did about all manner of things while the sun sank too quickly in the west and cache finding light disappeared with it. Good to meet a second cacher in 2 days in the wild. (Wonder if there's a way that this could be recorded? Cool )

TFTC and the blast.

Found it @ approx. 16:45

Pulled up at GZ and spied a potential fellow cacher scouring the item at GZ all over, Surprised so I introduced myself, Smile and proceeded to help with the search, once we figured out that they were looking for a GCA cache, when in actual fact I was obtaining info for a GC cache. Wink LOL.
Oh well, a cache is a cache after all. Mr. Green

Love the history of these items and glad they are so lovingly restored and looked after.

Visited with drednort on a lovely day for caching. Had been here previously while the gun was off its mount following painting. Was good to see the cache still in place now the gun and mount were reunited.

26-Oct-10
Found on my most productive caching day ever in the company of Reesylou. Thank you for the cache. This is an area I do not know well, and caching was a great way to explore it. I found this cache particularly interesting - my father was a gunnery instructor in the navy and it gave me an appreciation for artillery - nice to see something in such well kept condition.

I wanted to get my 300 in July (since I got 200 early July) and was so close after the mega day on Tuesday. Had a huge day at work today but made a point to stop and grab the remaining 3 caches I needed. I also wanted the 300 to be a GCA cache, and this was the easiest one to get to where I was travelling.

Thanks c@w for letting me grab my 300 (even though I was caught at work myself today)

Second attempt in 2 days. 2 x workers from the service station across the road were having a smoko break and watching my approach, I kept walking and went around the block (its a big one), darn still there.

Easy approach and log this afternoon.

I had to chuckle as this machine appears to have seen some recent action, which it had never been intended.
As I was retrieving the cache my nose came quite close to a pair of black lace undies! I assume they were left whilst some lewd activity occurred in the dark of night.
I would also assume that they are not the normal garb of the average cacher.

Cheers Gordo

After a delicious meal at nearby Yarraville, (one of the best places in the western suburbs)'The Quiet Plodder' with his cheerful mate, 'The Bus Boy' set out to battle the western suburbs traffic (on foot) in search of this Cache for 'Plodders' fourth score. The Cache is cleverly hidden, not the least obvious due to its 'blending in'. The thoughtfulness with respect to the Cache's construction is appreciated. We took nothing, our pleasure derived from being pleased with the find and the inventiveness of the Cache. Enjoyed our walk, the traffic notwithstanding, and the experience, thanks to 'caughtatwork'!

Found by PR&F on 5/12/09 @ 6pm.
Grabbed this one while on the hunt for the movable cache!
Great location, thanks for bringing me here.

05-Dec-09
To answer the pwags question, yes, the cache was actually on the gun when it got relocated. It only move about 5m and so the co-ords were never updated as it was obvious where the cache was going to be hidden.

05-Dec-09
Decided it was time to grab this GCA cache which has been on my list of unfound ones close to home for some time now. And today was the perfect opportunity, as I had to offload "Cache me if you can" as quickly as possible so that it can continue to stay on the leaderboard of the Moving Cache Race. Stealth was necessary, as the neighbour was sitting at the window overlooking the park. My feigned serious interest in military equipment removed any suspicion, and I soon had the cleverly-hidden cache in my hands. Signed log, re-hid it, then placed the moving cache very closeby. Thanks for another machine of war, c@w! Now to remain stealthy, and find that GC offset cache!

An interesting note: The gun appears to have been rotated 90 degrees since the Google Satellite view photo was taken... was that prior to the cache being placed here?

I called by today to retreive my GA cache "Annie get ya gun!" which is aslo here. I placed mine not knowing that a GCA cache was already here. As soon as I became aware of the conflict, I spoke to the ump as well as caughtatwork and neither were concerned about it and others have sent me mail saying it is not a problem as they are both different games and it should stay. I have given it considerable thought and I may make mine an easy multi to avoid the possibility of someone signing the wrong log.

14-Nov-09
Found it with Rabbitto by default really. We thought we found the 3up cache, but when we saw that C@W had put his name in the intro page - well it didn't twig even then! It wasn't until Sunday when Alansee called to tell us what was going on.

Gosh this GCA business is fragmenting the game isn't it? Why can't we all live under the one snug banner and be happy little cachers?

Thanks C&W - increased our GCA finds by 15% Smile)

Found today after a short search thanks caught@work

25-Oct-09
We decided to spend a few hours over the other side of the bridge today, and I suspected there might be a GCA cache or two over here, so I was careful to check the GCA web site first and not just rely on Geocache Navigator.

The kids enjoyed climbing all over the machine while I searched. You'd think they would do that while I took it easy wouldn't you - sigh!

Thanks caughtatwork. Nice to get another GCA.

King Jnr with the exhausted family in the car nearby.

We had spent the whole afternoon at Scienceworks discovering looking at the the Star Wars exhibit. Couldn't leave the area without doing a few local caches - it was a pleasure that out last for the day was a GCA our third of the series. The cache itself was very quickly in hand - didn't even take the GPS out of the car.

Thanks again CaughtatWork not just for the cache but also for all you GCA / Caching Victoria work.

Found by Facitman and the Facit-Family at 21:03
Third find of the night as darkness fell.... time to head onto Wyndham Lights!
Having searched many of these machines over the years we fell into a routine as the four of us circled and probed. After a short search Facitman was heard to cry 'Huckle Buckle Beanstalk'. This resulted in blank stares from the rest of the family and a quiet chuckle from Rhinogeo. Soon after s-facit also had located the cache with e-facit requiring some prompting.

Thanks caught@work, nice to find something larger than an eclipse tin on one of these.

I'm not sure how I've missed doing this one before - not too many GCA caches get placed in the east, so I'm not totally fastidious about checking for them, but I was annoyed once before when I realized I'd passed right by another in this series in Altona while doing a nearby GC cache and I've certainly checked many times since this was placed, so I got a real surprise when I did a quick scan of the area prior to squeezing in a quick caching trip after visiting family in Brighton today and spotted it right near the freeway exit. Anyway, despite it taking a bit longer to locate than I was happy with (it's hard to look when you're wearing a helmet Wink), I got it without too much trouble - and it was certainly a lot speedier than my 1st cache in a similar location (a Kiwideb micro on the cannon near the clock tower in Ringwood).

TNLN

Thanks caughtatwork - it's actually had a good number of finds - more than usual for a Vic GCA cache I'd think.

This is actually my first GCA cache log although the second one I have found. The other is a longer story..... I was in the area so decided to try it out. As I said on the last similar hide I logged, I do not recall finding two caches hidden in exactly the same manner on these items. This is another variation. Thanks Caughtatwork.

22-Jul-08
I have often driven past here and not known a cache lay nearby. However last night I saw where it was and took a short detour here on the way to Werribee. A very easy find but with such a large container when usually a micro is used, meant this was the easiest gun find I've ever made. TNLN
Thanks caught at work for a great little series that I think I have finally finished.

With Robmc or should I say Robmc was with me, (my car this trip), and we decided to drop in. Also a chance to try out my brand new Garmin etrex Legend Hcx. Just bought in from the States. Seems it works and it didn't sent me down the wrong side of the road either. There was a bloke sitting in a ute with a view towards us which neither of us noticed for a while. Hope he didn't see too much!
BTW The gun is a 25lb Short Gun Howitzer. Built by Vickers Ruwolt during WW 2,

I'm not having a good day. Another no find. I left the GPS in the car and just looked on the canon. Gave it what I thought was a good looking over, but no joy. There was some dirty old paper stuffed in behind the sheild that may have hidden the cache behind it, but was not that commited to putting my hand down there.

I was on a very limited time budget when I arrived here. As soon as I pulled up the neighbors started to unload a heap of stuff out of their car which over look the cache. So I was trying hard to be discreet. But they never even glanced at me. I think I could have done the cache in fancy dress and they wouldn't have noticed. As I was short on time I used the hint and quickly had the cache in hand. When i was leaving I noticed that someone had set up an office partition and a pot plant on the nature strip. Was this here to block the view of the neighbors? Perhaps there were some rouge street accountants who like to work behind it, hidden from passing traffic. Very weird. . tn_241645053.jpg
