Description

The Old Courthouse, built 1927-1928, is valued by the community, for not only does it represent a tangible reminder of the past, but it is for many, the location where decisions were made or actions taken which directly affected their life, whether it be for better or worse.

It was originally proposed to build the courthouse from stone but concrete was chosen as a cheaper option. The hollow concrete blocks which resemble stone, were made on site in patterned metal moulds.

The courthouse was designed for use as the Administrative Offices of Central Australia, which was established in 1926 to prepare for a  measure of self government in the Northern Territory.

It represents a brief period between1926 and 1931 when Central Australia was an independant administrative region and managed separately from the remainder of the Territory.

Managed to park the car less than 100m from the old courthouse, so this was our last stop for the afternoon. Certainly the new court house is not particularly designed to blend in with anything around it. Thanks for setting up this historical cache. Very HappySmileVery HappySmile
