Description

On Kunnayi

Whilst looking about on the historical Exhibition Gardens site at the Springs  on Kunanyi/Mount Wellington we discovered a geocache container.  Apparently it is an unregistered one and did not include a name, but had a log book and an indicator that it was a geocache.

The log had several names in it, all of whom mentioned that it was found by accident, and many of these  by people "bouldering" at the site.. We decided to register it.

The container was sitting on a ledge under a small overhang and was reached by following a track through the bush that leaves the bend in reopened path through the  Exhibition Gardens (at S 42° 54.924 E 147° 15.061).  Just walk along this rough track to a rocky spot and follow the pad down between the outcrops.

For information on the Exhibition Gardens go to this website.

Unfortunately on the first day that the mountain was not covered in cloud since we arrived they decided to close the road to the top for works so this was a close as we were able to get. We walked to the nearby lookout and then walked along the path and the trail to locate this cache as we were planning on using the caches at the top for our daily cache.
The cache was located quickly in good condition.
An interesting story about the cache, we had someone find one one of our GA caches and published it as their own on GC. A quick email to the reviewer and it was quickly unpublished.
Thanks for the hide Sue&Peter.

Great cache - I reckon someone has placed this and found that it is too close to the end of a puzzle cache and simply left the cache there

TFTC and Merry Christmas

Journey or Destination

Game Period: 01-Dec-2018 00:00:00 to 31-Jan-2019 23:59:59 AEST

It is sometimes said [citation needed] that the game of geocaching is not about the destination it is about the journey. This game is about the choices you make in the experience of the journey or the destination.

On your entry to the game you will be asked to create a playing field with a number of ground tiles. Your playing field is a grid 20 x 20 ground tiles making a total number of 400 possible steps you can take on your journey or destination. You choose whether you want to find and follow the path or whether you wanted to meander around. A playing field is unique to each player so there is no benefit in teaming up to beat the system through brute force.

For each qualifying geocache that you hide or find during the game period you will be offered the opportunity to click on a ground tile and reveal what lies beneath. There are a number of different ground tiles that will be revealed when you click on your playing field. It should be noted that there are no punishments for clicking a tile but there will not always be the reward you were hoping for as you reveal each tile.

Dirt. The ground beneath the ground tile is just plain old brown dirt.

Dirt with some points. The ground beneath the tile is brown dirt but it has some points associated with it.

Concrete. The ground beneath is part of the pathway that will lead you on your way to your destination but has no point value.

Start. A concrete ground tile that has a blue map marker.

Destination. A ground tile that has a green map marker.

Meandering around and avoiding the path will accumulate points that will be used to place on you the ladder of wanderers. The more you stay off the path the higher the number of points you will accumulate and it will be your journey that will be the determining factor in whether you place into a prize winning position. You are free to select any ground tile to click on; they do not need to be next to each other.

Trying to find the path may mean you strike out on the dirt until you eventually come across the path and as a geocacher who can't say that this isn't a tried and true method. Once you find the path however will you try and follow the path as it changes direction around your playing field? Do you go North, South, East or West to try and find the next concrete tile along the path? If you head one way are you heading towards the start or towards the destination? When you do happen upon the destination tile then you will automatically be in a winning position.

At any point you are free to change from the journey to the destination and vice versa but you won't be able to regenerate your playing field. You are also free to keep playing as long as you have qualifying geocaches, accumulating more and more dirt tile points and placing you higher and higher on the ladder.

Qualifying geocaches fall into two categories. Finds and Hides.

A qualifying find is a geocache that meets the following criteria:

The geocache is listed at Geocaching Australia

The geocache has a hidden date prior to the game commencing

The geocache was logged by you on the Geocaching Australia website during the game period

The geocache was physically found by you during the game period

The geocache is not owned by you unless it is a moveable geocache

The geocache has not previously been found by you during the game period

The geocache is one of the following types:

Burke and Wills

Moveable (you will qualify only once for a find on a moveable geocache)

Traditional

TrigPoint

Augmented Reality

Beacon

Gadget

Multi-cache

Night Cache

Podcache

Reverse

Unknown or Mystery

A qualifying hide is a geocache that meets the following criteria:

The geocache is listed at Geocaching Australia

The geocache has a hidden date after the game has commenced

The geocache was published on the Geocaching Australia website during the game period

The geocache has a container size of regular or larger (Note: A regular geocache has a volume of 1 litre or more)

The geocache is one of the following types:

Moveable

Traditional

Augmented Reality

Beacon

Gadget

Multi-cache

Night Cache

Podcache

Reverse

Unknown or Mystery

The game tracking mechanism relies upon your honesty when logging geocaches as found or hidden.

The games administrators will undertake verification of a statistically significant number of logs.

Players who continually log inaccurate information will be disqualified from the game. The game administrators decision is final.

The game administrators will subtract qualifying hide or find geocaches from your tally if they are found to be not genuine.

The game administrators reserve the right to provide clarifications to the rules at any point during the game.

Don't forget to claim your limited time game trophies, if your qualify, while the game is in progress. Once the game completes the ability to claim your trophies is lost for ever.

Thanks for the cache Sue&Peter. Well, you think an area pretty well, and then caching lets you know about all the other great places underneath your nose. This was one of those places. As there were warm temperatures forecast for today, I was keen to head up the mountain in the hope it would be a bit cooler. So I dragged RLD4963 and the GeoGSP along to look for some GCA caches around the Springs. It was a cracker of a day on the mountain today - crystal clear blue skies, nice and warm, no wind, magnificent views. I was having a lot of trouble working out how we were going to get to this cache with no obvious cache on any maps, and nothing visible on Google maps. However, have to thank AlbyDangles for the mention of the track he used in his previous log. We carefully made our way to the cache and made a very quick find at GZ. cache in great condition and the log was quickly signed. Looks like there is some work going on nearby which might make access easier in the future - which will be great, the views from the summit are fantastic. cheers and thanks for activating this cache Sue&Peter.

Out and about with the Rafas caching before Christmas, there were some caches to find at the springs. Thank to another Cacher for the hint on the way to this cache, found with uncertainty until the last couple of steps. TFTC TNLN log dry.

"Hello Sue&Peter thanks for the cache.

I had to walk along a bit of the currently closed track before heading into the bush to your cache.
I am surprised the cache is still there sitting out in the open in a prominent place.
Thanks for bringing me to another part of the mountain.

Found on Thursday 06 December 2018 at 1809"

Wow what a lovely spot that we would never have found except for geocaching. Amazing that this cache has sat here on this ledge in full sight since 2014. Thanks Sue&Peter for registering this cache on GCA. It looks like there are going to be tracks heading off to other spots in this area. More spots for cache placements. TFTC

After finishing our walk on Milles track we noticed that this cache was not far away and as we were fascinated by Sue and Peters story of its discovery we felt we couldn't leave the area without looking for it.

We were sharing the area with several little hoppies this morning as well as a smallish echidna and several species of small wren type birds. Walking on the mountain at this time in the morning is certainly good for the soul.

We had no trouble finding the tracks that led to this area and once in the hide area the ledge was easily identified. The cache was safely tucked away and container and contents were in good condition.

Thanks Sue&Peter for registering this cache and providing the story behind you finding it. We really enjoyed our visit here today.

After dropping Mrs Rat off this morning I carried on thru town and up to the springs, this cache interested me since it was a bit odd and also it would give me chance to look in on a couple of my caches nearby.
I read all the 'logs' from climbers that were here for a bit of bouldering and then added my name to the log book after Sue and Peter, not sure if I can or want to claim *FTF* or whether that goes to S&P?

A quick look in GSAK confirmed which puzzle cache would have stopped this one being published on GC, I was going to say the same as Sue&Peter but having just looked it turns out they have not logged a find on the puzzle in question.

Many years ago I used to rock climb and boulder too I even travelled to the bouldering Mecca that is Fontainebleau for a week of bouldering once.

Thanks to whoever hid this cache and S&P for listing it.
