Description
The ABC: ABC Kimberley, Broome
The Kimberley region is the far north west corner of Australia, over 2,000 kilometres from Perth, the capital of Western Australia.
The population of the region is around 35,000, though almost ten times that number visit the Kimberley as tourists each year.
The region was named 'The Kimberley District' for the Earl of Kimberley, secretary for the colonies, in 1880. He also gave his name to a region in South Africa which, like the Australian Kimberley, is famous for producing diamonds.
ABC Kimberley has two bureaus lying 1,000 kilometres apart in Broome and Kununurra.
The Broome studio went to air for the first time on January 26th 1990, with a staff of one — George Manning, the inaugural ABC Kimberley broadcaster and station manager. Not long afterwards the Kununurra studio began on Sandalwood Avenue, with Paul Semple presenting the Kimberley Morning Program, and Mike Harris was the first rural reporter.
ABC Kimberley is now a vibrant and dynamic team of 12, producing some 30 hours of radio, online content of all types, and occasionally television, each week.
We work from our new studios in the main street of Kununurra and at our purpose-built studio on Hamersley Street in Broome.
For more information, see the ABC Kimberley page.

Great to learn a little about the wonderful ABC in the north. We'd driven past the first day of our trip and both hummed the ABC tune in unison which elicited a giggle, so it was good to return and nab a cache as well. Cheers!
