Description
Plover Island ~ T H E S A N D O N ~ |
Wanna visit an island? If only the P was silent. Plover Island is really only half an island. At low tide you can wander out to this little headland without getting your feet wet, but on high tide water surrounds this little patch of land completely. The journey to Sandon River campgrounds (the place you'll leave your car) starts just before Brooms Head, and is located 10km down an dirt heavily rutted road. Dental fillings have been loosened and car suspensions have been known to cry out in horror, but patience is rewarded when you eventually approach the Sandon River campground, with the river to your right, and glimpses of beach coming into view to your left. Sandon beach is sublime and stretches north to Brooms Head in the distance, Plover Island protects the beach for swimmers, there are gentle waves for novice surfers, and the river is gorgeous. If you want to stay in the campground, prior bookings are required. There are often a few people here camping but due to the amount of space here with beach, river and island all ready for exploration - you'll feel like you have this place to yourself. It's easy to spend a day here and still not see everything. |

Logs
Suspect by the disturbance at GZ other cachers have searched unsuccessfully and not logged a DNF.
Will have to return another day, hopefully the potholes in the road don't get any bigger, nearly swallowed up the cruiser
