Description

This cache is placed near Richard's Monument.

Mt Wellington plays an important part in Hobart’s history and this is another point of interest on the mountain that reflects this.

Frank Richards, aged 32, died in the 1903 Go-As-You-Please Race which ran from Hobart to the Pinnacle and back. He was a farmer, living somewhere near Hobart, who apparently died from exhaustion on the way up.  The winner took the tidy time of 2 hours and 44 minutes. Quite a feat given that there was no road past The Springs.

To reach the cache, park at the Springs upper carpark. Walk up the steps, then head up the Pinnacle Track. It climbs steadily but not TOO steeply (with some great views) up to the cache location. There you will see the small monument, which had a small bunch of native flowers placed at its base on the day of placement.

After re-hiding please check from below that cache is not visible.

Logs

After running around getting some other GCA caches to fulfil scavengers we parked up at the upper springs car park, we made our way up the steps to the junction and headed up the trail at a steady pace every now and then taking in the view and being amazed it be walking as the snow fell from the sky.
To start of the trail was rocky underfoot but get better as we got higher and our speed picked up so much so we walked passed the cache and had to walk back 30m or so, we read the very interesting monument and I turn to Goose and said 'You stand still and be careful' Laughing
After a bit of a search we found the cache and were soon adding our names to the log.
It was a nice walk back down and along with the rain and snow we were treated to hail just to top the day off.

Thanks very much for a better than normal cache.

After finding Angel Cache (eventually) we moved the car up to the car park at the old hotel site. We sat out a heavy shower in the car before heading up the stairs past an oldsaint cache I logged back in my first year of caching. Up, up, up we went at a steady pace pausing occasionally to take in the view (yeah ok, and to catch out breath too). We had a little rain shower on the way up but we were prepared so it didn't worry us too much. As we approached the monument I thought some late blossom was blowing in the wind but then it dawned on me. I turned to SSR and said 'its bl00dy snowing'. We were surprised Surprised Somehow we managed to walk past the monument, luckily not far. We backtracked and still didn't see it for a bit. Maybe we were snow-blind Wink
Our GPS's were not playing our game but the helpful hint had us finding it in the second place we looked. As whitewebbs reported, the cache is in great condition after 3 years rest. After tucking it away safely again we took a few photos before walking down in clear weather. We took a side trip before reaching the car park and then as were headed back down the stairs from the junction it started to hail. We'd had it all today but enjoyed the challenge.
Really enjoyed the walk but will have to go back again due to a new publication today. At least I know what I am in for next time. TFTC Dippedidooda

Wow over 3 years since found and everything shipshape. Great views along the way. Mrs W had to stop and admire the view quite often as a steady grade uphill. TFTC

Having found two caches on the foreshore between Kingston and Blackmans Bay, we then headed up the mountain to tackle this cache. We set off from The Springs and apart from the first 80m, it was a very pleasant walk. The uphill walk was quite easy compared to two other walks we had completed within the last week (associated with some of the Dooleys Heritage Trail caches) - we managed to get to GZ with minimal stops along the way. Once at GZ we contemplated the plaque - it would have been a much more rugged run in those days than today and there would not have been the level of support currently available to those who run/walk the Point to Pinnacle event. Then we looked for the cache. The hint led to a quick find. The cache and it's contents were in good condition. Thanks for a very interesting cache Dippedidooda and for bringing us to this special location.

The good clue keeps the place from being damaged. Thanks again Dippy!

The clues made this a quick find. TFTC Dippedidooda

On a fine sunny day we decided that a circuit walk starting from the Springs and going via Hunters and Organ Pipes tracks would be ideal. There were a few caches that would be encountered along the way, although one of those we discovered was actually a bit of a back track along the north south track; so was given a miss.
One of first was a quite close moveable and part of a geocache game which we though could be redeposited near the Chalet when we got that far; however when we discovered how big and awkward it was the cache was it was quickly whisked back to the car.

Walked the Organ Pipe circuit this afternoon, nice easy walk, lots of caches. Started at the chalet and went down to "The Survival Kit Cache" first grabbing a few caches on my way to the springs, topped up the water bottle, then up the Pinnacle track, onto the the Organ Pipes track back to the chalet. Took a bit longer than expected due to all the caches. All caches I found were in very good condition. Cache container at Spinx Rock has got a couple of holes chewed in it by rats but is still fairly dry and contents intact. Thanks for all the great caches. Smile

A perfect day for a walk on the mountain. The views at GZ were spectacular. We actually walked several hundred meters past the monument before we realised we had gone too far. This was probably because we were busy watching where we were putting our feet on the rough track. Cache is in good condition. TFTC

My 400th combined GC/GCA cache, so I thought I should make it a GCA cache.
And this one beckoned - it had been raining in the morning, but then it settled down to low clouds floating around the foot of the mountain.
My GPS played silly buggers on the wwalk, so I was 200m past the monument (not sure how I didn't see it!), when it suddenly swung round and said it was behind me.
The hide eluded me to start with, so I looked at the hint, after which I was just embarrassed that I didn't spot it immediately.
Thanks Dippy, and all the other hiders out there.

Hi Dipster, Got this cache at 1552hrs, 3rd of 5 for the day and 468th overall. Yet another monument to those that did the run from bottom to top; another surprise in that I did not know they had the race so many years ago. Wonder how many actually died in the attempt to win? Thanks for the cache, the walk and the great views. Cheers OldSaint.

This was just the type of cache we like, a walk with great views to see something interesting - which we are wondering why we had never spotted before (must have been too busy watching the views!!) It was a sunny day on the mountain on our Show Day holiday and we think more people should visit here. T fruit topped cheesecake L bobbing head frog. Thanks Dippy.

You know, been on this track many times and never once noticed the monument. I'm a little ashamed of that.
Most of the snow had gone, a few dribs and drabs here and there decorating the countryside, but generally just making it wet, muddy and slippery.
Thanks Dippy, another sweet mountain spot.

Had spoken to Mr & Mrs red tag on Pinnacle Rd as I was heading up towards this one.
I was warned that I'd get wet and Mrs was correct. I had come semi prepared with over-trousers but the sandshoes? Well, it was either them or neoprene booties so I opted for sandshoes.
Arrived at GZ after probably the hardest 800m walk I've ever done to a cache and found the cache quickly.
T photo, LN. So cold my glasses kept fogging up so I took them off...
Thanks for the walk in the snow - it was fantastic!

Well done on FTF Red Tag! It looks gorgeous in the snow. Thanks for putting in a stash note, and for the help on uploading a picture!

This was a brilliant walk.
Most of it was in the snow and apart from one other set of footprints we had the track all to ourselves.
The snow was lovely and soft, the views were spectacular and the sun shone for almost the whole time. Just perfect !!
We even scored ourselves another FTF
Thanks heaps Dippy Smile))
Took - lip balm
Left - mobile lanyard and a stash note.
.... passed Swampy on our way down the mountain so the FTF was only just Smile
