Description

For NON-summit mountain moments. Find something memorable!

"There’s no glory in climbing a mountain if all you want to do is to get to the top. It’s experiencing the climb itself – in all its moments of revelation, heartbreak, and fatigue – that has to be the goal.”
– Karyn Kusama

She is of course correct. But, let's be real, trig stations are on summits haha. Well, mostly.. it was a trig station that was NOT on a summit that inspired this Locationless Cache.

My most significant trig find so far was an old station cairn with weathered post from 1893 that sat at high elevation but not on the nearby summit of Mount Norman in Girraween National Park. I'm glad I was adventuring solo that day because I sat with this discovery for over an hour in silence absorbing the history and the moment. I love a good summit trek but I was so 'in the moment' with this forgotten treasure that I left the summit climb for another day. Click the thumbnail for a larger image, you can see the summit in the background. I recently returned to this area with some geo-buddies and ventured to the summit. The experience of discovering the old trig wins.

Another trig hunting adventure had me trying to drive to a summit. After two large mud holes I aborted this idea. The "track" was seriously gnarly. I wasn't in the mood to spend hours winching so I walked to the summit to find the fine example of a NSW station. The view was good too. BUT, the best part and more memorable experience of that trig hunt was the 4WD action! Click the thumbnail to see the state of my 4WD geo-van after that day.

This is a companion cache to GA27056 Mountain Summits. For this Locationless Cache the definition of a mountain is different. If it's a natural elevation with an official name then let's call it a mountain.

To log this cahce, find a non-summit memorable mountain moment and provide an image and story. There are no restrictions. Anywhere in the world is okay. The same location can be logged multiple times. You can log multiple 'mountains'. You do not require yourself or a GPS in the image although it's preferred. I do ask though that the images provided are your own. Some more examples could be non-summit views, high elevation mountain lakes, forgotten historical structures, that time you got that great image when the lighting was close to perfect, or even an image of a trail accompanied with a memorable story.

So, please provide:

1. At least one of your own images.
2. A story
3. The name of the natural elevation
4. Coordinates

Have fun with your moments!

Arrowtown New Zealand Feehly Ridge.

Attempting a multi that started in a cemetery and ended, unbeknown to us, at the end of a very steep, narrow, almost vertical track. The climb scared us silly but the view from the ridge top of Arrowtown below was magnificant. The summit and the cache were still some distance away. We were glad to make the descent after finding the cache without incident.

The added image is a collage of 2 photos one taken from the cemetery looking up to Feehly Ridge, the other taken from the ridge looking down to Arrowtown.

Cube Rock, South Mount Cameron, Tasmania

Mr T @ Cube Rock, a virtual cache that he found with 3 other teams in 2023.

A steep climb to reach the cube, can continue on further uphill, but they returned after finding this cache.

Logging for the Cacheopoly Game.

This would be one of our most memorable mountain moments. The Hammock, Bundaberg Queensland. It was a full moon, and MrGt54 was capturing the moment.

I've walked the Thark Ridge track a couple of times. Thark Ridge is a smidge lower than Mt Wellington which is in the background of my photo. Whilst the original hiders along the track had serious/sensible names for the caches, some of the newer ones are a bit fun/naughty eg For Thark's Sake, What a Tharking Great View!, Baby Thark, and Thark That! to name a few. The track to Thark Ridge is reasonably flat from the road but quite rocky and uneven. On a clear day there are great view to Mt Wellington and Dead Island. The area had provided some tharking great mountain moments!

While climbing Mount Montgomery the start of the trail runs along side of myrtle creek.
the photo attached to this is a unnamed waterfall that you pass by on your way up the mountain,
i wasn't expecting to see a waterfall and climb a mountain in the same day but i achieved both on this trip.

One of my favorite walk to the North of Bell station, n the way to the Wollangambe canyon. The highest point in the area with a truly amazing 360 degree view and while it does not have an official name, it is known as The Center of the Universe Pagoda, and for good reason. You will have to work to get there, but it is worth the effort.

I recently joined some geo-buddies and hiked to the top of Spicer's Peak in Queensland's Main Range National Park. There was an impressive trig cairn at the summit. As much as I LOVE trigs, the view 'just below' the summit was the highlight of the day Smile No views at the summit due to thick tree coverage.

“Although I deeply love oceans, deserts, and other wild landscapes, it is only mountains that beckon me with that sort of painful magnetic pull to walk deeper and deeper into their beauty.” – Victoria Erikson
