Description

At these coordinates is a memorial plaque recently placed the Sunbury Family Historical Society commemorating 71 forgotten children who through disease, malnutrition and utter neglect died and were buried in unmarked graves while incarcerated in the Sunbury Industrial School, the first institution established on the nearby hill.

Conditions were atrocious. A unreliable supply of water had to be carried up the hill from Jackson Creek. When food did arrive from Melbourne it was regularly mouldy or rancid.

From Joan Brogden's address at a General Meeting on 13th. September 2003 – ‘The idea behind Industrial Schools was to care for vagrant children and teach them a trade. Vagrancy became a huge problem at the end of the gold rush, as there were no jobs for families who returned to Melbourne. Men were forced to ‘go bush’ to seek work whilst women and children often ended up on the streets.’

‘Hygiene at the school was poor. Because it was scarce, children washed in the same water. There were no towels so the children dried themselves on their sheet. They were allocated only one sheet. Bed-wetting was a problem but there were only 3 chamber pots between 50 boys. Some had no pillow and most slept on a straw palliasse on the floor. Lice, fleas, and scabies spread quickly. The first health check showed 103 out of 120 boys had scabies. One comb was used for the 50 boys. Many children lost their eyesight because of ophthalmia (Conjunctivitis). More than 50% of the boys were under the age of 10 and the death rate for the first year was 11%.’

May they rest in peace.

A sombre location. Having lost a child, even though he was an adult, he is still our child no matter his age and the memories flood back. Love you Matt.

GCA Find #208

I nice easy Multi, with a very sad story. Times were tough. Had to wait for a muggle to leave GZ before grabbing the cache. ClappingClan Phoenix

Found after over a year since the last finder - all is well with the cache. An interesting spot to visit - no one about except for a friendly black cat. TFTC.

It was saddening to read the story of the children of the Sunbury Industrial School. Makes us realise the "Good Old Days" were only good for a few. The lives of most were precarious.
While 4 council workers zoomed around on mowers we collected the information that would enable us to find gz.
Fortunately gz was not close to the areas being mown. The cache was located quickly, the log signed and the container replaced.
Thanks for an interesting and informative cache Team Ladava

I hadn't heard about this, so was both interesting and sad to read the story and names on the plaque...

Calculations were done and then off to GZ where the cache was found sitting safe and sound. Cache is in good condition for one that hasn't been found for over 2 years...

Thanks Team Ladava for bringing me out here.

A trip to Sunbury for an appointment gave me the perfect opportunity to chase a few caches left over from our last visit.

I was a few plots over gathering the info for another cache when I realised there was a GCA nearby. A short walk to WP1 and the numbers were gathered then off to GZ for a quick find.

Thanks again Ian and Sandra

Finally had time to do the cache.
Was in Sunbury getting new shoes for the Cachemobile and had an hour to kill.
You may need to revise your cache description as it does not use the "A" in the calculations.
Anyway, all that aside, a nice walk on a nice day.

Found this cache while on a "Super Sunbury Sunday" geocaching day!
Pretty easy find. A man was teding to a grave near cz, so I had to "loiter" around for a while before I could zone in on the final cache.

Found by Roma and Max.
It was with considerable de ja vu when we let our auto routing GPSr wind its way into this GZ, familiar territory as we recognized the route!
It certainly is a sad tale and unfortunately not uncommon for that era.
Another thank you Team Ladava for this experience.
Romax.

Took a few minutes to find it buried in a hole - Definitely worth the visit! Smile

Woohoo! Two GCA caches in the same day in the same town. That doesn't occur very frequently for us out here in the western suburbs.
This was a remembered sad story as I had visited this cache when it was listed on GC.
The maths was simple and as I approached GZ I knew I had them right. It was then just a case of finding the cache which was revealed in just a few minutes.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks Team Ladava for this cache and the location. I lover a good cemetary and this one was great as from one cache I could walk directly to the next one.

Somewhat depressing but well worth the visit. Compounded by council 'worker' muggles playing with nearby horses whilst supposedly trimming shrubbery. Another good camo job, thanks Team Ladava for this cache.

It was great to be back out in Sunbury this morning, chasing up a few new caches from Team Ladava. This one had re-appeared on my unfound list, after being relisted on GCA, so i thought I should get my name in the new logbook. It took a while to locate this time, being at a lower altitude than I remember. Thanks for bringing me back here, Team Ladava. Cheers!

Found 9.00am
It's great to see this area being so well kept, parked close to WP1 and grabbed the necessary information. Only a short walk to GZ where we were suppried to find the cache out in the open (I guess it had been moved by animals). Great to be the FTF and we signed the log and dropped in one of our pathtags. We re-hide the cache but it may not be where the owners originally put it.

Thanks Team Ladava for a great addition to the GCA cache pool.

01-May-11
We moved this one over from GC to allow access to a fresh cache in the same cemetery
