MITCHELL
QUEENSLAND
This Arrest Creek Police Memorial can be located on the Mitchell - St George Road about 7 km south of Mitchell. This monument commemorates members of the police force who fought the bush rangers throughout Australia. The memorial is at the site of the Kenniff Brothers arrest.
The Kenniff Brothers are said to be Australia's last bush rangers. In 1902 Police Constable George Doyle and Station Manager Albert Dahlke were hunting the brothers Patrick and James Kenniff over the theft of a pony. They came upon the brothers at Lethbridge Pocket in Queensland's Carnarvon region and were murdered.
A reward was offered for the Kenniffs' capture and they were caught after three months on the run at Arrest Creek near Mitchell. Patrick was hanged at Brisbane's Boggo Road Gaol in January 1903. His brother served 12 years in prison.
Nearby these sculptures commemorate the service of police troopers and Aboriginal trackers.
The sculptures represent the capture of Patrick Kenniff, lying on the ground with two police constables standing guard over him. The image that is facing to the south is that of the Aboriginal tracker. The sculpture on the hill Paddy's Knob depicts how Jimmy got away and was eventually surrounded by his captors and forced to surrender. The Kenniff Brothers are said to be Australia's last bush rangers.

A memorial to the five members of the Panton Hill CFA who perished on Ash Wednesday (16 Feb 1983), at Upper Beaconsfield, when their tanker was overrun by flames.
Some time after 1986, someone put a shotgun blast through the original memorial peppering the glass slab with shot. It was simply repaired & siliconed back into place.
The other photos show other plaques in the park.

Discovered this memorial to the "three bushfire fighters who gave their lives on 9th January 1983" in Grays Point.
This small plaque is located in front of the old school house in Swansea, Tasmania, and is placed in memory of Police Constable Frederick Henderson who was killed during the execution of his duty at Swansea on 11 October 1922.
Trooper Henderson lost his life in an attempt to capture triple murderer George William Carpenter. Trooper Henderson had travelled from Triabunna where he was stationed to Swansea. There he was to take over the task of guarding the scene of the first of two murders. Unfortunately for the unarmed policeman the offender returned and a violent struggle ensued. Trooper Henderson fell mortally wounded by a charge of shot from the gun pressed into his chest. Carpenter was later hanged in Hobart for his crimes. Trooper Henderson posthumously received the Kings Medal for courage and devotion to duty.

#GA130 - 17:05; This memorial honours the New South Wales Police Force and in particluar those members who have lost their lives in the line of duty. It is also the WP for a multi GC2T2A4 'Culpam Poena Premit Comes' which translated means 'Punishment Follows Closely On Guilt'.
Today, in the wind and rain, we visited Mt Lofty which normally overlooks Adelaide but today was covered in thick mist and cloud. Whilst walking around we came across two adjacent memorials to the Firefighters who lost their lives and those who fought in the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 16 February 1983. Three photos have been added to the Gallery: a view with one of us next to the memorial; and one of each of the adjacent plaques.
This is the Tasmania Police Memorial for officers killed in the line of duty over the last 100 years. It is at the Police academy and includes replicas of the plaques for each officer that exist at the Canberra Police memorial.
In my relatively short career I have lost one colleague who died whilst working. Unfortunately Ty Bennett had a car accident and died while attending a possible Burglary in progress.

I saw this memorial when I was in Kings Park this morning. It's the Firefighters Memorial Grove.

I should have logged this one earlier, having created a Waymark of the Victorian Police Memorial a couple of months back. It's a place I had not know existed before seeing a story on the local news about a motorcycle ride leaving/arriving and the upcoming memorial service to be held there.
"The memorial is a tribute to the 157 police who have had their lives brought to a tragic and abrupt end (as at November, 2010). The memorial is a fitting reminder of the sacrifice each have made to provide a safe and secure community."

In memory of Sergeant Glen Huitson ' a bush copper' that was killed in the line of duty near this site on 3rd August 1999. He was a very well respected Police Officer who was stationed at Adelaide River.
There is a covered picnic area to sit at and take in the surroundings to think and reflect on that very sad day ...

IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE.
Ken Stewart was a longtime member of Tarrawingee brigade, and would have been 21 when he was involved in fighting the disastrous fire. He died just one week shy of his 86th birthday in 2008. His memoirs at Tarrawingee 1943 fire remembered provide a most telling story of the fire and tragedy.
A Royal Commission into the 1939 Black Friday fires recommended a single firefighting authority for country Victoria, bringing together the Bush Fire Brigades, Country Fire Brigades and Forest Commission. The Tarrawingee fire added impetus to the push for improved management, and the Country Fire Authority commenced on 2 April 1945.
On May 4 2009 following a memorial service for the Black Saturday Bushfires, an additional plaque was unveiled at the CFA Training College at Fiskville, west of Melbourne, to commemorate the actions of the 10 volunteers who died in December 1943, while fighting the fire at Tarrawingee, near Wangaratta.

Firefighter Ted Hughes Memorial
Lithgow, NSW
A few years ago, he gave his life fighting fires, just to the north of Lithgow, NSW -- west of McKellars Park. The photo shows the small memorial cross with his name.
And there's a large white cross on the rock above.
A beautiful place now, with little sign of those terrible fires.
Thanks to Ted and his colleagues.
