Description
The Hampden Bridge Kangaroo Valley - Historic Engineering Marker #47
The historic bridge over the Kangaroo River, Kangaroo Valley, NSW, is a 101-year old suspension bridge which was a remarkable achievement for colonial New South Wales, but was not on the same scale as the contemporary suspension bridges in the USA.
Contents of the plaque:
This bridge is the only surviving suspension bridge from the colonial period of New South Wales and was an outstanding engineering achievement for its time designed by the eminent engineer E.M. de Burgh of the Public Works Department and built by Loveridge and Hudson. It was opened on 19 May 1898, replacing the 2-span timber truss bridge of 1879.
DEDICATED BY THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, AUSTRALIA AND THE KANGAROO VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC 1999
When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

Stopped by here on the way through for a quick snap.
Having driven past here many many times it was time to stop and grab this Marker. Have always loved this bridge.

Leaving, we walked across the road to get the best angle to photograph the Bridge. My idea was to see about building an EarthCache around the information available at the other end. What a surprise when we found a plaque stating "Historic Engineering Marker - The Hampden Bridge Kangaroo Valley NSW".
Having spoken to the CO some weeks ago, I had learnt about these GA caches. And so it's time to log a found on this historic structure.
Cheers,

The Hampden Bridge in Kangaroo Valley is the only surviving colonial suspension bridge in NSW. Designed by E M De Burgh of the Public Works Department & built by Loveridge & Hudson, it was opened on 18 May 1898. It still carries traffic with motorists having to give way as it only has one lane. It is highly photographic & attracts considerable attention. I Waymarked this marker in 2011 reference WMAJX3 & my GPSr can be seen on the sandstone block. Thanks for adding these Virtuals & I look forward to finding a few more.
