Description

Sydney Harbour Bridge - International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark #151

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel through arch bridge across Sydney Harbour that carries rail, vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore. The dramatic view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of Sydney, and Australia. The bridge is nicknamed "The Coathanger" because of its arch-based design or is simply called "the Bridge" by Sydney residents.

Under the direction of Dr J.J.C. Bradfield of the NSW Department of Public Works, the bridge was designed and built by British firm Dorman Long and Co Ltd of Middlesbrough and opened in 1932. The bridge's design was influenced by the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City. It is the sixth longest spanning-arch bridge in the world and the tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 m (440 ft) from top to water level. It was also the world's widest long-span bridge, at 48.8 m (160 ft) wide, until construction of the new Port Mann Bridge in Vancouver was completed in 2012.

We were in Sydney for the weekend and of course, we just had to walk across the bridge. So on the way we came across this landmark and decided that we would take the picture and claim the geocache.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for placing this one here for us to find today.

I took a stroll up here this morning for what seemed like a 2-for-1 find. I'm not too sure about the other one now but this is pretty clear-cut so I was soon taking the necessary pickie at 08:35. Very Happy

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

A last minute decision to catch a train and do some caching in the CBD. Walking usually is the best way to go. Enjoyed the city after not being there for quite a while.

In the city today to go to a Christmas lunch with former work colleagues and spotted the plaque while heading across the bridge to get the new GC virtual. When I saw the plaque I guessed correctly that there'd be a GCA cache here.

I didn't want to waste the opportunity while walking across the bridge for the 7 Bridges Walk, so I quickly snapped myself with the plaque before heading downstairs to get my passport stamped.

Got this free one first before paying and heading upstairs to the other marker. It's worth the trip and fee! You need to head way down to ground for the trig

Decided to take a walk across the harbour bridge today and stopped for this one as I went. Thanks Team MavETJu for this one. Great views of the harbour and city from here as well as some interesting history. Didn't visit the National Engineering Mark inside the South Pylon today but will be back for that one.

#GA827 - 15:30; I was in Sydney with the geohoney and geoteen who had headed off for some retail therapy. That meant only one thing for me, an opportunity to collect some of the newer CBD caches which had made an appearance since I was last here. I had collected some of this series around Pyrmont and the city before taking a detour to Darlinghurst to visit the old gaol, before returning to the city for a couple more. It was now time to head down to the harbour, or so I thought, for the next in the series. It wasn't until I was near the borttom of the pylon that I discovered I needed a bit more altitude to make the find on this plaque. It had been a hot day so far, so the visit here gave me the chance to grab a cold milkshake before heading upstairs. I made it to GZ and grabbed a photo, not realising initially that it was the plaque I was looking for, until I re-read the description. I must have been tiring by this stage as I didn't notice the other plaque, which would have been in a more familiar format, was just up the stairs. I was a bit far away to trudge back, so it will just have to wait for the next visit. Claiming another *FTF* (unless advised otherwise) as the sole finder to date is the CO. TFTC Team MavEtJu, the last of eight in the series for the day out ClappingClan Cerberus
