Description

Historic Bridges of Gundagai - Historic Engineering Marker #44

The historic bridges at Gundagai consist of

  • an iron-truss road bridge named the Prince Alfred Bridge, 1867
  • a timber beam road viaduct, 1869, reconstructed 1898
  • a timber truss railway viaduct, 1903
  • a steel pin-jointed railway truss, 1903.

Each and collectively they have high heritage significance because the history of Gundagai is the history of a river town plagued by floods and where its bridges, particularly the Prince Alfred Bridge and its approach viaduct, were essential to maintaining land communication.

Contents of the plaque:

These two bridges comprise similar pinpointed structures over the Murrumbidgee river and timber viaducts over the flood plain. The 1867 iron, three-span warren truss road bridge and two successive viaducts carried the Hume Highway for 110 years. The iron cylinders for the piers were cast at Mittagong by Fitzroy Iron Works and the trusses were assembled using iron work from England. The railway bridge is a steel hog-back style truss which was manufactured in the USA by A&P Roberts Company. The bridge and its timber howe truss viaduct, the longest in Australia, were completed in 1903 by the Department of Public Works' engineers and day labour. These structures carried the branch railway to Tumur for 82 years. Dedicated by the Institution of Engineers, Australia and Gundagai Historic Bridges Inc. - 1998

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

After a weekend of caching with The Empire, Happy Pants and Happy Feet in Wagga, I headed off by myself for some photographs, sight seeing, GCA's & Waymarks. I had a local Adventure Lab cache on my Radar and I managed a photo as I passed / visited each Wpt.
Many beautiful spots visited. I love travelling this big land of ours. Dancing

Thanks for highlighting this and for the cache Team MavEtJu. Clapping More history I wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for caching. Clan Phoenix

We were cleaning up the last of our Gundagai unfounds, and we're always keen for a virtual stop.... these rickety old bridges are still impressive structures, although I'm not sure I would have ever liked to drive across them.... TFTC!

As we headed to Melbourne today from Jugiong we only stopped to grab a few easily accessible GCA caches. This was one of them.
The bridge is certainly in a bad way although we were amused by the sign which states it is a managed ruin!!!
Thanks.

With a free day and a new Geocaching promotion to collect some souvenirs, I decided on taking the trip out to Gundagai and cleanup the area for both GC and GCA. Big Grin I started by finding some caches out the behind Gundagai which were along a nice scenic road across the countryside. Next I headed into town to avenge a few DNF’s and then to ‘Hungry Jacks’ for lunch. Afterwards, I headed into the main part of town and collected the rest in town. There were many great history lessons, that I enjoyed learning about along my travels today. Big Grin I next headed to out to ‘Dog on the Tucker Box’ to find the one I missed last time I was here. I also bought a hat to add to my hat collection. To finish off and before heading home, I found a couple of caches in Coolac. TB visit on all found caches. I would like to thank all CO’s for placing and maintaining the caches I found today and for allowing them to bring joy to me and others. TFTC’s
Today’s Totals:
17 GC Finds Smile
7 GCA Finds Smile
1 DNF Sad

Before arriving at GZ my GPS was taking me a way to this cache that I wasn't able to take. I finally got to GZ of this one and soon after I the required photo to claim my find. TFTC

#GA1763 - 09:15; I was heading south for Wodonga where I would be catching up with Strange Trousers, Geosnag1 and CBRCHIC to tackle the High Country Rail Trail, when I dropped into Gundagai on the way through to collect a few of the local caches. This one was on today's circuit, so stopped off and grabbed a quick snap. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

Impressive bridges here and well worth a look snapped required pic.

Thanks TeamMavEtJu another of these markers found.

I have always been fascinated by these bridges and have, when much younger, walked across both of them and camped under them. It is a shame that they have got into their current state of (dis)repair, it seems that the best intentions managed to build a sign but not much else. Thanks for the cache MavEtJu

On way to coast. A few caches on the way. Have enjoyed this Historic Engineering series

23-Jul-16
On our way to Yass we made a detour through Gundagai to find this engineering marker. We enjoy finding the old bridges as we travel around and the Gundagai ones at this site are great examples of the old wooden trestle road and rail bridges. It is a pity the road bridge has deteriorated to the extent that it is no longer safe . We remember walking across it many years ago. Thanks TeamMavEtJu for this cache and a reason to revisit this site.

27-Mar-16
Moved to the right coordinates thanks to the investigative work of J_&_J. Thanks heaps!

21-Mar-16
The listed coordinates for this virtual are quite a way off of the actual marker, and all finders so far have logged a plaque that shows no sign of being engineering related. The real plaque can be found at the point where the two old bridges meet at their Northern confluence, which is clearly signed even from the existing coordinates.

Anyhow, we visited the engineering marker and grabbed some pics, and read all we could on these remarkable achievements. Hopefully soon people will be able to walk on the first six or seven sections of the old road bridge once they are restored to a safe level.

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

SE Coast and mountains drive trip. November 2015. The plaque here did not seem to be about the main bridges, but here is the image.
