Description

A virtual cache that marks the spot in which Sturt crossed the Murrumbidgee

Monument Dedicated:

Passed by here: November 30, 1829

A cairn marks the spot where Charles Sturt crossed the Murrumbidgee River in 1829.

In November 1829 Sturt used the Murrumbidgee River to cut across to the Lachlan River. On the banks of the Murrumbidgee, Sturt and his seven companions put together a boat they had brought with them from Sydney and proceeded downstream. On January 14, 1830, they entered a wide new river which Sturt named the Murray, and a few days later they sighted another river flowing into it which Sturt assumed to be the Darling.

There was a good attendance on the motorists' camping reserve at Gundagai to celebrate the centenary of Captain Charles Sturt's first visit to Gundagai. A cairn of rough stone and cement had been erected midway between the two bridges, the front of which bore a marble tablet, inscribed: "Captain Charles Sturt, explorer, passed this spot on 30th November, 1829." The president of the Shire Council (Cr. Carberry)  gave an interesting description of Sturt 's journey down the Murrumbidgee referring particularly to his journey through the Gundagai district. Mr. Ken. Hoad, M.L.A., gave an interesting and instructional address on Sturt 's expeditions in New South Wales and South Australia. The president then unveiled the tablet by releasing an Australian flag which had draped the cairn.

After a weekend of caching with The Empire, Happy Pants and Happy Feet in Wagga, I headed off by myself for some photographs, sightseeing, GCA's & Waymarks. I had a local Adventure Lab cache on my Radar and I managed a photo as I passed / visited each waypoint.
Many beautiful spots visited. I love travelling this big land of ours. Dancing

Thanks for highlighting this and for the virtual Throsbyonchurch. Clapping I've always wondered why there isn't more caches relating to Charles Sturt. Think

Pulled up next to this one and wondered how we were going to access it through the wire fence. But by driving to the old wooden bridge we noticed a gap in the fence that we could walk through.
Not many staying in the caravan park when we were here today and none down in the part we needed to access.
Thanks.

Found this cache on the way to, at or on the way home from the Mega at Clearwaters. My trip to the Mega was great, found lab caches which while like gadgets are new icons to me. Found some great caches and brought back some neat ideas for new caches in Tasmania.

With a free day and a new Geocaching promotion to collect some souvenirs, I decided on taking the trip out to Gundagai and cleanup the area for both GC and GCA. Big Grin I started by finding some caches out the behind Gundagai which were along a nice scenic road across the countryside. Next I headed into town to avenge a few DNF’s and then to ‘Hungry Jacks’ for lunch. Afterwards, I headed into the main part of town and collected the rest in town. There were many great history lessons, that I enjoyed learning about along my travels today. Big Grin I next headed to out to ‘Dog on the Tucker Box’ to find the one I missed last time I was here. I also bought a hat to add to my hat collection. To finish off and before heading home, I found a couple of caches in Coolac. TB visit on all found caches. I would like to thank all CO’s for placing and maintaining the caches I found today and for allowing them to bring joy to me and others. TFTC’s

#GA1764 - 09:30; I was heading south for Wodonga where I would be catching up with Strange Trousers, Geosnag1 and CBRCHIC to tackle the High Country Rail Trail, when I dropped into Gundagai on the way through to collect a few of the local caches. This one was on today's circuit, so I wandered over and grabbed a quick snap after logging the nearby GC cache. TFTC Throsbyonchurch Very HappyClan Cerberus

Very sorry to those who went in search of this cairn ... just a little boo boo now corrected.

This virtual cache is confusing. The cache name indicates that we should have found a memorial to Hume & Hovell at the published coordinates. However, at the posted coordinates we found a monument to Captain Charles Sturt. We searched in a radius of about 50m but didn't find a memorial to Hume & Hovell. We looked at the photo posted by Tassie Trekkers and their photo is of the Sturt Memorial as well. So we too will post our photo of the Captain Charles Sturt memorial for this cache. The inconsistency does need to be sorted out. Thanks Throsbyonchurch.
