Treasure (cache) plundered, to be reburied soon.

I am regretfully archiving this cache since there's been no response from nor action by the cache owner within the time frame requested in a prior reviewer note.

Hi ryanja

This geocache was brought to my attention as being in need of an owner maintenance visit and after my previous reviewer note, there has been no owner response. The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either replace it or archive it, after picking up any geo-litter. See the [maintenance section of the Geocache Listing Requirements/Guidelines](http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#listingmaintenance).

I've added this cache to my watchlist, and I will check back in four weeks to be sure that the maintenance has been done. In the meantime, I have temporarily disabled this listing. When the maintenance is completed, the owner can enable the listing by clicking on the link below the cache name to return it to active status.

Whatever your intentions, please **post a note** here on the cache page (not email) to let us know that you are still active and maintaining the cache. If a month passes without seeing a response, then I'll assume that this listing should be archived.

Please note, that if a cache is archived due to lack of owner maintenance, the cache is unable to be unarchived.

Regards

As I said a year ago, cache is literally impossible to access now due to the final waypoint not existing anymore, and the CO won't reply to messages asking for the final clues. This cache needs significant maintenance.

Cache needs significant maintenance, the final waypoint is literally gone now and the CO hasn't responded to my message after a long time asking for support regarding the missing information.

Great puzzle for a sunny day. Came unstuck at WP4, as couldn't find the number. Hope CO will reply to nessage, as cannot get the photo from my phone to message. Sad

01-Oct-20
Progress has been very slow on this puzzle with me just chipping away at it as opportunities arose. I couldn't find the required information at WP4 but was able to apply logic to figure out the final coordinates.

I called at the "final" site today, completing forgetting that it wasn't quite the final and wondered why I could not sight the hint object. Once I re-read the description, I was away again and soon found the container which is in terrific condition. Thanks, ryanja, for an enjoyable quest.

Well! This is one cache that has taken me all over the city. All good until WP4, which was a bit of a roadblock. Contacted CO, who gave me the next part of the puzzle, but several hours of frenzied maths followed. Finally, coordinates that made sense. A sunny day when I approached GZ (which didn't seem appropriate, somehow. Should have been dark and misty, with owls hooting in the gloom... Anyway.) Found the tomb, then a short hunt for the cache. All in good order, even for one so seldom found. FP from me for the chase around town. Tftc!

Cool and fun

27-Apr-19
CO was kind enough to provide the missing information, which led to another puzzle. Quickly solved, and faith some corrections to my previous math I finally had a set of viable coordinates. The final location was all quiet today, and once some of the upsetting amount of rubbish was cleaned up, the treasure was found. Interestingly, the previous finder appears to have a time machine, as had dated the log a month in the future. All safe and dry here. TFTC.

Waypoint 4 is down at the moment and I may not be able to fix it for a while. Please contact me for a hint once you’ve visited the location. Please send a photo of the site to verify you’ve completed that section.

I got as far as WP 4 several months ago without any issues, but my initial search revealed nothing. However, it was dark so I gave up and vowed to return in the daylight. So return I did, today, and hunted high and low, dodging the "young landlubbers playing about" in search of the mysterious clue that will lead me to the next puzzle. Sadly, nothing found. I ran the numbers with what I had and the options for the missing numbers, and have the final location narrowed down to 120 points, but none of of them stood out as a pirates grave site. Hopefully the CO can review WP4 at some point and verify if it still exists.

Found! First in nearly 2 years! Smile Had to write a program to solve the puzzle! All in good condition TFTC Smile

24-Mar-19
Find #216. After many months of trying to find time to get to the various waypoints, we needed assistance with waypoint 4 as there was a physical problem with it. Then it came time to solve the final puzzle. Aros71 ended up writing a short computer program (not very piratey of him!) to solve that, then it was off to the GZ. A lovely little place which I had no idea existed before. Many thanks to the CO fire the time and effort put in to setting up this cache, this took a while, but it was very rewarding to solve and find. Cache in VGC considering no one has found it for nearly two years! Left a silica gel pack with the log book. TNLNSL. TFTC.

Checked on the cache during lunch today and found it in fine condition. Cleaned up a bit of rubbish while I was there as it does tend to collect it. Last find was in 2017, so it could use some more people hunting for it!

26-May-17
Dropped by the cache today in order to tidy up the GZ location, only to find that gasbottle had done most of the work already. Cleaned up what I could find before hurrying back to work. Sorry I'm not able to maintain this one as well as I used to be able to. I used to live very close to the GZ, but am now in Levin. Thanks to all the people who have found the cache, and especially to gasbottle who tidied up the area on his second visit.

A fantastic cache from start to finish. Worked my way through the various stages over the period of four days, with the final being picked up during a run this morning. Some very clever stuff in here, and I have no shame in admitting that I would not have completed the task without a little help from some muggle friends.

The final location is in a good state of repair now, presumably thanks to the previous logged finds. Good works there chaps. I felt very comfortable at the final location, and I am very glad that the cache took me here as the history is fascinating.

TFTC - favourite point richly deserved and duly awarded.

Sink me ya dogs that be th' fun expedition, pull up thy anchors and go on account for grand adventures! Me didst sail thee clue seas in all weathers, consulted rutter, pressganged electronic brain, got advice from first mate GB, and even th' pirate king ryanja hisself! Must 'ave addled brains as didst again search from stem to stern this day for a full watch glass before didst finally be unearthing th' booty! Nowst homewards for carousing and Nelson's folly! Cheers for yer grand cache bucko!

Return visit - thanks to the CO for checking up on this. Knowing what a mess there was here at my last visit I came equipped with gloves and bags and spent the first fifteen minutes on CITO. Once done I felt a lot more comfortable rooting about in the undergrowth. Not that it helped. This time, though, I spotted a useful comment in the logs that I should have seen before. Now I had two more places to check which I'd previously ruled out as being too distant.

CITOed some more junk from the first, cache found in good order in the second.

FP awarded for the fun parts of this quest. Took nothing, left nothing, Signed log.

Visited the cache today and found it in fine condition. Area could use a bit of a tidy up so I'll return with a rubbish bag ASAP. The actual cache location was rubbish free, so if you're picking through bottles you're looking in the wrong spot.

03-May-17
Didst brave thee work doldrums and squalid weather to explore this shore to-day. Confident I made Dug through undergrowth for a spell and uncovered naught but bottles & more bottles — all be uncorked and drunken! No cache of treasure couldst I find. Fie!

13-Dec-16
This started out as great fun, making may way from place to place and enjoying the clues and the search. I had to make two visits to WP4 as the first visit had to be abandoned because of muggles. Once I'd picked up the WP4 clue and sweated through the algebra required to solve it I was off to make a find.

Except I wasn't. I got to the grave at the final coordinates and followed the directions to the pirate's grave but things went downhill from there. The proximity of the bank was unnerving but the real unpleasantness was the number of empty and part-empty beer cans and bottles and the rank smell of stale beer that pervaded the air. I spent a few minutes nervously rummaging through the leaf litter, unsure of what I might find, and decided this was a caching experience I didn't need.

It might be worth the CO rethinking the final hiding place - I'm sure there's somewhere nearby that would be suitable.

What a great mystery cache! We had a free afternoon out in the sun so followed the clues from one place to another. Very well thought out and took us to all sorts of places. Found the cache no problem and all in good order Smile

It took a hot lunchtime and part of an afternoon to solve this. I loved the variety of each stage - a very well thought-out and put-together treasure hunt!

I spent a lot of time near the final over the last few years, but I never had the opportunity to venture in. A peaceful spot at 8.30 on a Friday morning. (Though it does seem to be a favourite drinking spot for some, judging by the rubbish!) Would like to learn more about this area - the grave at the final coordinates and the vault (which seems to have been built for a four year old!)

The cache was in perfect condition - the pen even worked! - though it was teetering on the edge. I left it more nestled, and a bit more covered (there, how's that for a hint for the next finder?)

+FP.

Boy did we have some fun with this. You took us to parts of Wellington we never knew existed. Thanks for the fun. A fav.

16-May-14
Yarrrrrrr! Eventually got there in the end after not picking up a few obvious clues and looking in the completely wrong location! picked up a trackable and left something symbolic. always good to be hunting around the GZ in the middle of the night :p thanks!!!

08-Mar-14
I have been chipping away at this one for a while. Made things difficult for myself at WP3. When I first calculated the coordinates, I 'knew' there was nothing pirate related there, so I assumed I messed something up. After rechecking the clue at WP2 and redoing the calculations with the same results, I decided to visit the location anyway and soon spotted the clue. Also couldn't get the numbers to work for the final until I realised that I had missed a couple of (very obvious) steps. Eventually got everything sorted and the find at GZ was straight forward.

Despite the hiccups, this was great fun. Thanks Ryanja for putting it together. Favourite from me.

29-Dec-13
We worked on this puzzle over a couple of weeks. We had a slip up at Waypoint 2 but after a bit of thinking about the surrounding area came up with the clever answer. Off to GZ today in the rain and successfully located the cache. Left Pirate Pete the TB as it seemed a great place for him. A disaster was thankfully averted - MrM5 was replacing the cache and dropped it leaving it teetering on the edge of the precipice. Luckily it was able to be reached as we really didn't fancy going after it down the cliff! TFTC

Started the voyage to the Dead Man's Chest about two summers ago! Has sat in my solved now get in pile for too long, so after seeing recent visits, thought it was time to strike out again. WDH2000 bang on the money - again!

Fantastic puzzle cache that we had lots of fun doing over a couple of weekends. Thanks Ryanja. The final was true to the theme of the puzzle and a place that I hadn't been before; an added bonus was the intriguing history of early Wellington.
Cache find was entirely true to the directions provided and the treasure discovered in straightforward fashion. Cache was all in order, log signed, a shark TB dropped off (seemed too good not to take this opportunity, a shark, get it?), and cache safely re-hidden.

The Turtle strikes again! (and on a dot day).

Took a few weeks on and off to solve this one. Finally got to the last spot today and signed the book. I believe the terrain rating is correct - it has a much higher potential terrain rating should you walk the plank ! Thanks for the puzzles, and the cache.

12-Jul-12
It took us two days to complete the whole puzzle, but the reward was great. Thank you for showing us these nice places around Wellington!

25-Mar-12
Yeah!! got it at last. This one really had me stumped for month off and on. Finally during a rummage of my records shown me that I had actually worked it out and forgot it! Got out on a wet, drizzly Saturday morning and had so problem working out the last few instructions and soon had the cache in hand. Its a really interesting spot. I remember a while ago (mid 90's?) the Catholic Church was looking at developing this land for something, but the hew & cry that blow up lead to them dropping the idea for now.

Dropped of the traveling Croc to tickle the Pirate's interest for a while.

If the final is so steep that you shouldn't attempt it with a fear of heights and might need someone to retrieve it for you, and it's unsuitable for children wondering if you should bump up the terrain rating a bit? (I would normally have no hesitation in doing 2.5 but now having second thoughts about doing the final if I get that far- only one stage to go.)

I guess you might be restricted by proximity rules and appropriate themes as to where you put the final, but if anything can be done to put it where kids can enjoy the fun of all stages maybe that could be considered?)

13-Jan-12
I've contacted the council to see if they can remove the trashed sofa and rubbish from the final location. It would be a shame to move the cache, as it's a great hiding spot and fits in well with the theme.

The area itself isn't that steep, but is located near a steep slope. I've only ever had one person complain, so have included a warning in case there are any others with a fear of heights. I think the 2.5 terrain is accurate for this cache.

Have you made it to WP4? I'm not able to check it very often, so would appreciate your assessment on how well it's holding up.

Have fun hunting. Smile

About five times, but this older fella can't be seen boarding yon mighty shallop * on his own without risk of someone clapping him in irons, Surprised may have to recruit some younger varmints to help though sadly it appears they may not be able to accompany me to find yon treasure arrr..... (I have deleted my last note now it has been actioned as people have pointed out that too many notes clog things up.)
*I realised I had mentioned something here which is encrypted by the owner, so I have changed this note to refer to what is in the description, and as it happens I found this great list of pirate terms http://caribbean-pirates.com/nautical_glossary.php

I visited Waypoint 2 today and found the ropes to be missing. I've now modified the puzzle to make use of another part of the museum.

Extremely pleased to finally knock this one off, months and months after I finally solved the tricky WP4 and calculated some likely coordinates for GZ. Started this very enjoyable treasure hunt mid-winter, then got stuck on WP4 until a friendly fellow cacher gave me some pointers. Very shortly after that the cache was disabled, much to my frustration. Have been waiting (not so) patiently for it to be resurrected, so when the notification came through I raced off to grab the final. In the intervening months I had forgotten about the extra instructions for finding the final, so was on the verge of giving up when I rechecked the cache description. Felt I was in the correct spot despite the door having been closed up, and I agree with Troodles' log that this is definitely no place to bring the kids. I left mine sitting uphill while I dug up the final treasure. Thanks for a fantastic and well themed puzzle, and for bringing it back to life!

12-Jan-12
You're right, this one should come with a warning. The final location is looking a lot shabbier than when I first placed it, so I may send a message to the council asking if they could tidy it up. It's also reasonably steep, so anyone with a fear of heights should get someone else to help collect the final.

Glad you enjoyed the cache, Jardis.

I appologize for the delay in fixing this one up. I don't have much time for caching at the moment as I have a young baby at home now. I'll get a new container fixed up this week. Smile

Cache has been muggled, owner contacted.

30-Jul-11
Sad Boo hoo!!! Its been muggled. Twisted
Looked at this several months ago, and worked out the WPs via the net.
Been to visit WP4 to get the last pieces required and solve the final, then forgot all about it.
Happened to be near WP4 the other day, so checked that again, and re-solved the final.
Finally went there today, and found the cache had been muggled.
We managed to find a few things (cache note, Butterfly Lady/Radionut calling card, a small treasure chest) floating around the area, but no log book.
I also have the "geocoin" that is currently logged as being in the cache - turns out its just a laminated picture of the original anyway.
Thanks to Ryanja for a fun cache to do, disappointed at that way it has turned out.

Dropped by recently to check on the final. Found everything in good order.

Thanks to all the people who marked this as a favourite!

Excellent multi that we had been chipping away at over the past month or so.
Didn't care at all for the final location, though. PLEASE DO NOT BRING SMALL CHILDREN HERE as there is a deadly drop less than a metre from the hiding spot. I couldn't even search in this area as I am scared of heights, luckily StreetWalker kept on searching and came up with the goods.

#1994 (1/12 on a Sunday drive). We've enjoyed chipping away at this one over the last few weeks. Finding a park at the GZ proved an interesting start to the hunt. Foudn the instructuions for finding the cache a little confusing, but some info in recent logs confirmed we were in the right place. Searching was a little nerve wracking. Troodles was keen to give it away, but I was keen to cross this one off my list. TFTC.

Selected this one to do based on the four favorites it has earned. And most enjoyable it was too. We started late this morning and pleased to say we had it solved by 5pm. WP1 was great with the waterfront packed with saturday morning activity. We knew we where in for a good search when we met a wandering pirate at the plank. Photo to come I hope. WP2 was interesting of course but a very much in and out experience and then WP3 was a great laugh when we realised where we were heading. WP4 was good once we decrypted (thanks for that well timed hint) and thankfully all the little pirates were off doing an organised activity which gave us good access. We were confused at first till Jed told me what the word at WP4 was. Then home for some WWW and excel time , google Earth confirmation and back out to find the treasure. What a great multi and hunt- took us all over, enjoyed it all and felt like we had earned the result. Thanks for all the effort of establishing and maintaining.

[I be still a-trying after many times to board WP4, yon scurvy muggles and mighty winds stopping any boarding parties.]
But what mean ye by "right side? - we pirates think right means "not wrong-" we say "starboard" arrrrr!

22-Oct-10
Took over 4 weekends to finish, really enjoyed this one, WP3 had me puzzled for a bit but when I clicked I then had to hand it over to hubby and his excel formula skills. Final was a nice easy find. SL - gem + skull keyring and treasure chest + geocoin

Our #550 We started this at home (as a previous logger said "in true pirate" style) and found wp4 in a howling southerly the day after the Christchurch earthquake. We had so much fun and after solving the puzzle were so keen to find the "tomb" that when Mr J needed to return to Wellington for a half day's work, Mrs J came along. After a couple false starts got to a place that had to be GZ but failed to find the hidden treasure. Tried again this morning and Mr J found it pretty quickly once at the tomb. He made all same errors as me getting there. A battery of volunteer mugs were beginning weeding and tidying so we didn't want to hang around. There is now a sofa guarding the door - these pirates like their creature comforts. (This was edited to add to the story - the hotel broadband keeps dumping stuff so I sent a short version rather than loose the lot 3 times...) Wonderful adventure NINO TFTC

Proudly flying the Jolly Roger after finally locating this booty.
As is the pirate way, I cheated a little by completing some of the first waypoints online. Loved WP4 though, especially when experienced just after midnight in a howling Wellington gale.
Final took a while to dig up but no longer will I have to pillage and plunder in this area. Interestingly, the last finder was a landlubber out for a walk, who tore a button off his breeches to leave in the chest after finding this treasure.
Forgot to take my camera so planning to return soon to snap myself in that spiffy tri-cornered hat.
For now, I think it's time for some 'Yo ho-hoing' and a bottle of rum.

14-Jan-10
I still be embarking on ye voyage but ye crew be advised that there be free boarding parties near WP1 at 1030 hours, 1130 hours and 1330 hours for inspection only, no putting to sea! Yours truly has not had a chance to raid one of these but hopes to do so.

Having been chipping away at this multi for a while, I finally managed to get to WP4 at lunchtime today. Coincidentally met a piratical Dean(o) marauding at another cache late at night (as you do). Realising we were both close to completion and not too far away from the final we set off search for the booty. Not expecting to look for this tonight, I hadn't loaded up the final coords, but fortunately Dean(o)'s memory of the solution was good enough to get us into the right area to follow the rest of the treasure map. After further looting and pillaging the area we found the X that marked the spot, right on the midnight, as befitted the location.
Thanks for a fun multi and the extra excitement of a night hunt for this one!

07-Dec-09
After having to make a second trip to WP4 I managed to solve the puzzle. I hadn't yet put the final coords into the iPhone when I bumped into -gonefishing- in search of another cache and we went and found this one together. Fortunately I remembered the coords and after finding the ladies we scrambled around in the bushes for a while. Very nearly came to a gruesome end in a not-so-watery grave and at the stroke of midnight we found the X that marks the spot. Excellent puzzle and trip around town. Did a little CITO with wine bottles and beer cans. Those pirates are litterbugs. TFTC SL left button. #52

Mr KE failed to find this one on his last visit in damp and muddy conditions. Today he returned in the pouring rain and without a jacket. I hadn't planned on doing much caching this weekend and certainly not in the rain.Big Grin But with Mrs KE hitting the shops what was a guy to do, decided to head to GC46 and got completely soaked getting there and back, so given that I was already wet why not try and knock this one off my DNF list. Found the cache within seconds of arriving at gz, why didn't I look there last time!! A great unknown/mystery cache, great theme and very well put together, the effort that goes into placing one like this is much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the multi cache. Took my friend Jojo on this treasure hunt. I am hoping she is now hooked and will join up as an official. Enjoyed the puzzles. Have been wanting to go to the final waypoint for weeks but just didn't have time. What a stunning view on a perfect Wellington day. As I am not a born and bred Wellingtonian this was an area I hadn't ventured before so thanks for showing me the area.

This one had been in my 'too-hard' basket for too long and always stood out as being unsolved when I went to my Geocaching Home page. Started a week ago and managed to get WP4 last night. Slept on it overnight and a flash of inspiration this morning helped me work out GZ (a location unknown to me) which worked out to be spot on. Took a while to find the cache (helps if you read instructions properly!) but all eventually became clear and managed to complete the 'paperwork'. A very well constructed cache, many thanks to 'ryanja' for putting it together.

Stumbled on WP4 while burying treasure and found it was part of this multi. Set sail for the harbour and swashbuckled down the waterfront to the plank and onto WP2 to find the cave door closed.Consulted my own pirate pet as to location of his relatives and solved WP3. Back to the puzzle for a few days head scratching and finally got there. Nice puzzle but lengthy. Detoured to final in the dark last night and GZ for women's grave was spot on. Paced off into the night and the tomb loomed but fading torch light failed to illuminate the doorway. Returned today with a new crew member en route to view the massacre at the stadium. Doorway visble as I rumaged with my cutlass in the vines my pirate mate located the chest. For his efforts he scored the patch and we left some loot. TFTCSL Left dry as found and secure.

With swords drawn the pirates board,
They swarm the ship, like an angry hoard.

The battle is over as fast as it begun,
Bodies strewn on the deck, rotting in the sun.

Prisoners are stowed down in the hold,
Their new ship is loaded with silver and gold.

The pirates make port at their secret cove,
They revel in success of their new treasure trove.

They take their prisoners and sell them for slaves,
Then on to find their next prize, it's treasure they crave.

Had a head start on this one today but was gutted when I couldn't find the cache. I think I was at the right tomb and had a reasonable look in pretty difficult searching conditions. When I found what looked like a drug pipe I decided I had had enough. I will email the cache owner with a reading I took at gz and see if I was close before making another visit in the future. A great cache that is very well themed just a shame to end this way today. Thanks.

Made a start on this while in the Capital today for a meeting. A well themed cache and waypoints thus far, it will be interesting to see how the remainder unfolds. Thanks.

Wow - what a fantastic journey. Have had this in mind to do for some time, so gathered all the intermediate clues/waypoints on my big geocaching aftenoon (Dec 30th), and then retired home with my genius son to try and figure the answer to the puzzle. He solved it before I did, but we'd love to know if there's an easy method! Went out this afternoon to acquaint ouselves with yet another unknown part of Wellington's history and claim the find. Pity the crypt is sealed...

Found after a quick search of the final location. Knew I was on the right track for GZ.. Had some trouble with the puzzle. No trouble with the other tasks.

A great day out with Miowmix. Didn't use the GPS much, found most of the waypoints by knowing where to look, being locals it took us only about 2 hours to finish. But we must admit that we had to use a phone joker to do some calculations for us, LOL Wink Thanks for this great adventure...

I had done most of the waypoints some time ago (in fact I've been doing this cache one waypoint at a time for about 3 years) so it was great to finally finish it.

After a bit of clandestine vandalism, WP4 is back and place and should be a bit more permanent this time. Happy Caching!

Just wanted to note that I've got a replacement for WP4 all ready to go, but have yet to have a chance to get out to place it. Sorry for the delay, I've just been extremely busy these last few weeks.

I visited the site of WP4 on Sunday and can confirm that it's most certainly gone walkabout.

I'll be trying to come up with a more permanent method of replacing it in the near future. For now, if anyone is working this cache, please email me once you've visited WP4, and I can help you find the final.

I've had two reports that WP4 has been muggled, so I'm disabling this till I get a chance to go out and verify.

Sorry for the trouble!

Quick find second time round – found today with Yeetrees, was within inches of the cache yesterday. Everything is much easier in the light of day although it took longer to find a car park. Must remember to carry a torch, when caching around the twilight zone. Many thanks Ryan, for a well themed puzzle cache, thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

Found the first three WP clues on Tuesday during breaks in a training course. Visited the WP4 structure on Wednesday evening with Yeetrees – but couldn't find the elusive container even with three sets of eyes, had no problems with landlubber junior muggles at this hour. Was able to continue on with puzzle, after Captain Ryan supplied us with a replica map.

Spent ages last night pondering the division of the loot, until a sensible solution was derived. Attempted the find this morning before the course started (within walking distance). Quickly found the crypt, but alas it looks like the treasure (cache) has been spirited away by the pirates.

Thanks Ryan for the great cache concept, enjoyed visiting all the various WPs. Will be back to have another look for the final once the status of the cache is established. Cheers YuGeo4.

No longer an open tomb!someone concreted it up!Still ok to find. [Other wise a very enjoyable find carried out over several weeks by 3 families!]

After several weeks we were able to complete the search! The puzzle was a huge mystery. We had to call in a few experts to work it out. Today we finally made it up to the tomb but did not find it open. A few muggles around were quite upset to find it had been recently sealed up. TNL Ben Shark TB.
