I've come over the ditch from Oz for a 3-week bucket list road trip around South Island. It's day 12 and the plan for today takes me from Dunedin to Oamaru, via Seacliff and a few other stops.Judging from the photo at GZ, this was a pretty impressive building in its day ... not much to see these days, though, but coming here was worth the detour off the highway and the walk to GZ.Thanks for creating this virtual cache to show the place to me and other cachers.
On our tour we drive through different landscapes and learn a lot about the history and origins through lab caches, virtual and earth caches. We walk through nice villages, enjoy the food and coffee or smoothie and also like to look for traditional and bonus containers. It's unbelievable what kind of complex once stood here.We give an Favo!!We would like to thank all the owners for the caches and send warm greetings from the Moorhelmi from Germany.
What a lovely reserve this is. From the info board we were amazed to see how grand the buildings here once were. Sir Truby King certainly was ahead of his time and improved the lives of many under his care. Thank you luring us here with this cache. ??
Armed with jandals and a chilly bin, a couple of Aussies headed across the ditch for a 3-week tiki tour, exploring the beauty of New Zealand.DAY 15: Time to leave Dunedin and head north to Oamaru.Interesting history here. Thanks for showing us this special place by placing this cache, Nemesis tn koe~~
#22957 @1145In NZ / Dunedin to attend Geo Toroa. Heading back to Christchurch today, then Canberra tomorrow. A did a detour to here on the way north. An interesting spot to visit. TFTC.
Visited here today took photos etc history shows that we now can do better thanks to more information etc many thanks for the maintenance of this old cache . At least Truby King improved many of the conditions for the patients both here and around New Zealand . This is a lovely large reserve thank you for bringing us to visit it . and remember those lost in the fire many years ago .
Drove out here today with ThatDarnBear and JustlookingOO, specifically to find this oldie virtual. What an amazing location, it had a certain feel about it.Thanks to the CO for this virtual cache.
After lunch at the Blueskin nursery, HS and I continued back up along Coast Road to continue from where we had left off in the morning. This virtual was first on our agenda. I had been here years ago when I lived in Oamaru, and I had just finished reading Truby Kings biography. Reading about his life was absolutely fascinating and I was keen to see the place. A lot of people were out and about. Thanks for the virtual, Donovan.
Seacliff Hospital (Dunedin, Otago)Dunedin MEGA Monday and day 3 of some great caching with QLD caching buddies! More great caches to be found while exploring the beautiful Dunedin. Signing our logs QLD + 1 to save room, we were pleased to see most of the caches had been recently maintained and enjoyed a great variety of hides and types.A massive thank you to all of the COs for the preparation, placement and maintenance of these caches. TFTC Donovan# 10691CheersWillis007
Out and about with Willis007 and other members of the group QLD+1 finding solved puzzles and multis plus other targeted caches. I was needing this one for my Jasmer so we came out to this interesting place just as the rain started. Ive read Janet Frames books so it was good to see where she had been. TftV
Pprime, Fangsoki and I had this cache on our target list while we were here for the Mega.We parked at the gate and strolled up the path to read the information board.TFTC Donovan
CaptainVimes and I have crossed the pond to attend the Geo Toroa mega in Dunedin and tour around the South Island for two weeks. It's sobering reading the sign about the hospital and see what an extensive building it was. Thanks Nemesis and happy caching
It was a bit of a drive from Dunedin but Grub62 and I visited this virtual while we were in New Zealand. It was interesting to read about the history of this place and to see what was left. Thanks for bringing us here and TFTC.
bunadoorian and I came here to do this Virtual as it was placed very early on in this game - in a month that I needed to fill a square in my Placed calendar. What a sight the building would have looked in the day out here. It was very informative reading the plaques. Thank you so much for bringing us to this spot Nemesis.
A very sobering place though I was pleased to read how "before his time" Truby King was and from that assume that at least some of those who spent time here would have had OK lives. I knew of his involvement with Plunket and Karitane hospitals but hadn't realised there was another dimension to his life. Thanks for bringing us here, and thanks for having the foresight to hide a cache in a month I needed for my Jasmer grid .
A visit to Seacliff.sobering to think of all the poor men and women who lived and died here. The trees are magnificent. TFTC
I'm heading to Dunedin with matagouri for a weekend of fun at the MEGA event, but could not turn down the opportunity to grab this very old virtual cache. It was pretty blustery here, and there were a few muggles around but it was great to explore this area and read about it's history. Thanks for setting this up
Came here for the hospital virtual but Apple Maps had me up the neighbours driveway. The place actually looked legit like an old hospital building so we were looking around for the tree and out comes the property owner in her dressing gown, hair in rollers, cup of coffee in one hand, cigarette in the other hand telling us hospital not here anymore, and we are trespassing. We hightailed it out of there and went into the reserve where we found what we needed. Clearly some of the crazies still lurking in this area.TFTC
Found with Jennyfromthefarm. Don't make our mistake and end up at the neighbours place. She looked mean for early in the morning.

I meandered from Warrington to Hampden today, picking up a number of caches along the way. And lots of pleasant scenery en route! I find the term lunatic asylum fascinating, certainly not one used in this day and age! Interesting spot to visit. #7385. TFTC.
This was a big ticket item for me and Ive been looking forward to the opportunity to visit here after reading so much about its history. An incredible site that had a remarkably calm restorative feeling about it when walking around- it didnt have that dark asylum feel you might expect, although Im sure it has its dark secrets! Beautiful grounds and autumn colours TFTC

A huge thank you to the cache owner for creating and maintaining a wonderful cache. EP79 and I have embarked on a three-month long geocaching trip across the globe, and we are both grateful and thrilled to discover new places and new friends. The first part of our trip is dedicated to Australia and New Zealand. Today is the last day of geocaching in New Zealand for a very long time. Its time to say goodbye do Dunedin, attempt some last caches and head west. Many thanks for an amazing find on the way.Sorry for logging with a delay. The trip was really busy, but at least I get to revisit these caches again and enjoy great memories. Many thanks for the invite to a beautiful place and for a wonderful geocaching adventure. Greetings from Prague, the Czech Republic, Europe.
Thank you for the cache!Another day exploring and geocaching in New Zealand with my bestfriend geocacher Ironford. We are leaving Dunedin today, driving to Queenstown and flying to Canberra for the MEGA tomorrow. I have really enjoyed my time here, and I'll miss this place (and all of New Zealand) a lot.For today we planned to do some sightseeing and geocaching in Dunedin, then take a scenic drive north along the coast (it turned out great!), and reach Queenstown in the evening.Greetings from Prague, Czech Republic What a place, what a history! I was glad to read about it on the info panel.
(4 of 4 today)Greetings from across the ditch.Apologies for the late log. When my friends and I were planning our trip to the Christchurch test, the question was asked "What do we do after the test finishes". My response was simple - I'm going to Dunedin for a day or two. Well, I had some specific caches to snaffle. Unsurprisingly, they came with me and today was the travel day south.I had two main targets for today - a webcam and a D/T 5/5 challenge.Got both of those as well as two others.###END OF CUT AND PASTE SECTION###Final one for today, before we arrive at our motel in Dunedin.Parked outside and walked up to see what was what. Took a (bad) photo with me in it, and a few much better ones - without me in them.Interesting history here. And the placed date actually puts me one closer to a second Fizzy loop. Win/Win!A favourite for keeping this going.TFTVirtual.
Drove up here and had the place to myself. Thanks for the cache./herrFamaxe from Sweden
This was a great virtual cache. Sor Truby King was certainly well ahead of his time in terms of treatment of the mentally ill. Thanks for bringing us here.
On today's drive from Dunedin to Christchurch, we visited this old cache. The rain stopped while we walked through the little park. TFTC!
4-week family trip through NZ - Find #176!This morning, we left Dunedin towards Christchurch in pouring rain . But rain or not, this oldie cache was a "must do" on our trip . So we took the scenic Coast Road, and stopped in Russell Road. My son ChrisAngel99 and I walked up to GZ, read the interesting (and somewhat depressing) story of the place, and got a photo for each of us under a nearby tree .TFTC!
Heute konnte auch dieser Virtuelle gefunden und geloggt werden.Danke an den owner fr's herfhren und ausdenken.TFTCSchmerzbefreit
I cannot see what I'm supposed to answer to log this, if I've missed something just let me know. Visited today to get the nearby multis, which had me reading this anyway. Overall this place is a very sad reminder of what used to be, and how thankful we can be to live in today's society. But what I did find really fascinating, and have since come home and read more on, is Sir Truby King's influence on infant care. I am a nurse and work with premature and/or unwell newborns, so this is really incredible to learn.. (and it's amazing anyone survived infancy!!) It's amazing that we've come so far, and have the knowledge and technology to allow even the smallest little babies (500g) to survive and thrive. ### [Truby King and the Plunket Movement](https://terangiaoaonunui.pukeariki.com/story-collections/taranaki-stories/truby-king-and-the-plunket-movement-give-me-the-impossible) ###*Babies were fed on a variety of foods, including diluted cream, buttermilk, barley water and bread and milk. Cow's milk was not pasteurised or tested for TB and the way it was delivered to homes encouraged contamination, milk being dipped from cans on delivery carts into whatever receptacle a household owned. Furthermore, many mothers believed fresh air harmed babies.**King, along with his new formula, began mixing his pro-breastfeeding ideas with data on child mortality, and began firing on all barrels. He led a crusade to lower infant death rates, built a factory to make his 'humanised' milk and dreamed of a troop of specially trained women who would take his sensible mothering advice into every New Zealand home.**King wrote new rules for raising infants - strict four-hourly feeding, no night feeds, potty training from an early age and fresh air day and night. Mothers were urged to breastfeed, and if they couldn't, there was his own formula, made up according to age and weight. His factory produced Karilac to be used in place of white sugar, Kariol for the correct amount of fat, and Karil as a tonic for older children.**His new ideas weren't always welcome. Mothers had always fed their babies on demand. Some thought King's methods actually starved their babies. Many ignored his advice and went back to feeding their new-borns crushed wine biscuits mashed with water in a bottle with a large-holed teat*
Out and about on day 7 of my South Island Tour and day 1 of "Wellingtonions Gone South: Dunedin Edition" with NZ_B, TwigNZ, Mr-Mcgoo, Itchyfeet2020 and matagouri. The target of this day was mainly Sutton Lake and some other oldies. All logs signed as MINT. TFTC
A visit to Dunedin by Wellington geocachers NZ_B, Itchyfeet2020, TwigNZ, Mr-Mcgoo, Taybeen NZ, and myself. Signing as Team MINT, targeting old caches, Wherigos, and whatever else we can find. This was a site well worth a visit for its historical value. Difficult to envisage the huge building that used to stand where only the remains of earthworks and foundations are currently visible. Thanks for bringing me here. Tftc!
Day 1 of our Dunedin Adventure. Six welly cachers have arrived with lots of plans and caches to find. Watch out Dunedin! This oldie virtual was on the list. A lovely walk through the park to visit this site. The picture of the building vs now is quite hard to comprehend. Thank you for the great cache.
(# 8270) The Wellington crew are on another mission. Included are Itchyfeet2020, NZ_B, TwigNZ, Matagouri and TaybeeNZ. As usual quite a bit of hilarity. Day 1 was more of a travel around where we went to Sutton Lake then up to Seacliff. Had read about the place and am pleased to have finally been on site. Signed as MINT.Thanks Donovan for bringing me here.

Day 7 of the Fangsoki/1MinnieMoo NZ adventures. This was our last full day in Dunedin, and as we had driven past this cache on our way to Dunedin, but were running out of time that day, we decided we should make it a priority today as I was very keen on this nice old virtual.
Parking the car, we headed on in and took a wander around the grounds. It was a super windy day today, but we seemed a little more sheltered in some of the pathways, as muddy as they were.
A sad but interesting location with history here.
Thanks for the virtual cache Nemesis.

Such an interesting place! Off to try and find some floor plans to figure out what everything was and where. Tftc
It’s a beautiful sunny day here at Seacliff. The road north of here to Kaitane is closed at the moment, but no problem accessing Seacliff from the south.

spent 6 great weeks in New Zealand with my The start was a bit bumpy (Cyclone Gabrielle) but then it got better and better. We travelled to both islands and discovered a lot. We photographed and filmed many beautiful things, but most of it stayed in our hearts.
Almost everywhere we stopped, a cache was already waiting for us. Most of the caches are well maintained and easy to find.
With mostly very nice weather, we saw a lot of this impressive island. In many places, caches were waiting for us, which were sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to find. This cache was also included and was successfully signed
We puzzled a lot in advance and the tours were well prepared
So this box was also well found.
now I have another on my personal cache card.
many thanks to [^] **Donovan** [^] for the effort and the cache and greetings from Germany

Day 3 of the South Island adventure for Car and I. Today we drove from Moeraki around to Invercaggil along the Caitlins. Amazing views along the whole stretch. We found several caches along the way. This one was on the list do list, a very sad story found at this location. Thanks for placing this one here and being part of our journey south.
Far out, what a tragic story. Heading South now in our three week journey, we stopped for some great caches along the way, including this one. We stayed last night at Moeraki and today we are heading further South. Thanks for the cache, Donovan.
Ein sehr schöner alter Virtueller mit interessanter Geschichte. Vielen Dank dafür und herzliche Grüße vom Rumtreiber aus Braunschweig, Deutschland.
Passing through on a tiki tour around the mainland. My last visit to Dunedin was many decades ago. The main gate appears to be locked in the summer too. Thanks for hiding Donovan.
Exploring the area around Dunedin while visiting friends (locals), on holidays from Sydney AUS. OCW MaxAdventurer and Baxter360.
Having visited the Otago Peninsula in the morning, we headed northwards and chose the coast road. Meanwhile the weather was sunny, temperature still a bit cold for the season.
Were curious to see what was left from the hospital.
Thank you for showing us this place

Cache 1082 Day 3 of my “hidden dates” cache holiday search around Dunedin. Today I’m exploring by myself taking my time heading up towards sea cliff to knock quite a few off the list on the way as well as grabbing some extras. Frosty start to the morning again but that still won’t deter my hunt for the Plastic. Even though there is no plastic to be found here this was a must do virtual might have a crack at the multis on my way out T4TV
Been here a few years ago but did not relies that there was a virtual cache here. Found the new multi and this one today.
Nice quiet and peaceful spot up here, enjoyed the little walk around.

#10,419. I have a big day planned picking out geotour caches on the north side of the harbour, up to Karitane and Moeraki and back to my accommodation in Dunedin. Plus grabbing a lot of adventure labs. The sun has come out and after some rather chilly December weather on this trip its forecast to reach 27 degrees today and I think they got that right. It was very hot today.
Finally I get a chance to visit Seacliff Hospital. This old virtual cache has been on my radar for years. The area reflects a period in our history where we hid away people with mental illness. You wonder what the ghosts of the past could tell you about this place. Went for a walk around the grounds and have uploaded a picture from close to GZ. Thanks Donovan for placing your virtual cache here so long ago.

Quite eerie here today and what a sad sad story. Thanks for bringing me here.
A 2001 virtual, I do like the original ones! After driving through the thick mist the coastal views were limited but would be good on A clear day. Still damp walking up the road to the old site past all those old trees.
Trip log: When cheap flights presented the opportunity to go to NZ with GreyHams, who was keen to get the 5 2000 caches and the web cam I was of course very keen to tag along. I didn't want to miss out on that... Equally as keen for those caches myself and the first chance to get the passport out in a long time and head overseas while we could. Covid Happenings of course did put the trip in doubt and a last minute effort from GreyHams to get the flights changed and it was looking like this might actually happen... until I arrived I truly didn't think it would!
The cache list was quite simple, the 5 2000 caches and the webcams. Of course we did look at others as we travelled, types, DT, not chosen which were in abundunce and caches of quality, if your cache made our list it had a quality we needed. Many thanks for your cache that helped guide us along our way.
Certainly it was a memorable time, barefoot 500 plus metres across a mud estuary of shells and crabs was more fun than it should be. As was pushing through wet thick high flax or tall wet grass across to the caches. But the most memorable would be the fog, the thickest, most relentless fog but it provided some stunning scenery at times and was just crazy.
I loved seeing all the chinese takeaways that did fish and chips, the perfect hedges and a deserved shout out to Indian Zaika for its great food! Certainly with the fog and rain it was an interesting trip and we got quite drenched at times, it hid a lot that NZ has to offer but 'it's a caching trip' after all so it ticked all the right boxes and was very enjoyable regardless. Huge thanks to GreyHams for letting me tag along while he did all the planning, booking, driving and sending in the answers for the caches... as always!

International travel!!...OMG it feels good. Grabbed some cheap flights and anxiously waited for some outbreak to derail the plan, but that amazingly didn't happen. Sure, I had to scramble and reroute our trip via Brisbane & Sydney as we were originally going through the plague pit...aka Melbourne, but we still made it.
Having done most of the North Island, it was good to finally have a crack at the South. 5 year 2000 caches and a webcam, thats a nice little haul. Sure, some of the year 2000 caches involved bush bashing....in the rain/fog/mist...but we got them all. We had lots of other little targets like getting all our types/sizes/DT, NZ in particular has so many 'Not Chosen' size caches, super rare back in Oz, so we made sure to get as many as possible. If you are reading this, its because this cache had a quality we were chasing.
As always, the Earthcaches and the Virtuals took us to some really cool places, the Steampunk HQ and the boulders being birthed at the beach being the highlights. My favourite cache though would have to be the one where we had to walk 500m over a mud flat, dodging shells and crabs with our bare feet.
This trip will be remembered as the 'fog trip' as we saw a lot of it, which meant we saw little else. Oh, that and how every Chinese takeaway also doubles as the fish & chip shop....its a thing!

I found this cache as a member of the team LaMaLaMa (now: Mr_Lama).
Since the team unfortunately split up, I am re-logging with my new account Lærry.
I hope you will understand.
Furthermore I thank you for hiding the many great caches!
Of course I will leave a favo to each cache where the original account did it. If I forget a cache, you are welcome to write to me.
Best wishes, Lærry

Away in the Geocamper on a TMGT mission around the lower South Island and attending a few meetings as well. That's the first meeting done with now on the road for TMGT's and anything else we might care to find on the way. We have heard about this hospital but never been here. We know about Sir Truby King naturally, who doesn't who grew up in New Zealand in the 50's and 60's. We did find it quite a mournful sort of place. It had "ATMOSPHERE" is all we can say. Quite sad really when you think about the lives lost and the suffering of those who were interred here. Maybe Sir Truby had the right idea. Fresh air and good food.
Thanks for bringing us here Donovan. Have a FAV. Always love atmosphere places, like the Tower of London, Bannockburn, Culloden and Loch Ness.

Day 12 of my 2020 NZE (New Zealand Experience).
(My apologies for the delayed logging but I'm in catch-up mode)
Seeing as I can't be in America right now, I'm touring around the South Island instead. During my time here I am aiming to find as many of the TMGT caches as I can (preferably all 41) and also as many Virtuals, Earthcaches and Letterbox Hybrids as possible, plus any Trads or others that will fill a hole in my D/T grid, my Jasmer grid, or else the last 3 remaining Hidden Dates on that grid.
Today's plan was to drive from Timaru down to Dunedin, following the coast but with plenty of side trips to get caches targeted as per above. I have been so lucky to have dry conditions my whole trip so far, with the sun really putting in an effort to convince me it wasn't winter! I didn't mind the chilly starts knowing that the rest of the day was going to be great caching conditions.
It was pitch black as I finally arrived at this location. Parking up near the locked (to vehicular traffic) entrance, I walked the couple of hundred metres to GZ with the aid of my torch. I didn't meet any spirits (friendly or otherwise) on my short walk and rather enjoyed the vaguely ethereal atmosphere of being here on my own.
Thanks for placing this Virtual Cache.

Stopped off here this morning while heading to Karitane. Walked up to the plaque and took a photo. Times have moved on. thankfully. TFTC
This one was a must. Been a long time wanting to visit this site. According to one of my talks with mother my oldest now my late brother spent time here, alternating between here and Dunedin hospital. Back then medical did not really know what was wrong with him so the shuffle around. He died when I was there. But looking at the date the buildings demolished and doing the maths I think mother was getting confused and it was not this place but the other one up the road. Will have to re talk to her.
Nice day for a diversion heading south after a week traveling about the north half of the mainland.
The grounds here immaculate.

Made the detour on our way from Dunedin north to visit this place for reflection. Photo attached to prove I was there.
We shall also remember coming here for the flat tyre we suffered as we left!

After four days in and around Dunedin caching, this was the first cache to visit as I make my way up to Christchurch. It was a must as it is generally a well known piece of our history. Even though he was ahead of his time, understanding has changed for improvement of care and treatment. Thanks for the cache placement.
I've been meaning to do this one for a while ! Didn't have my GPS with me, so put my wallet in the photo!
