CONGRATULATIONS the.pud on 1000 caches. I'm humbled that you should choose this cache for your milestone.
Enjoyed the event was cool meeting new people on the island. Long day of walking will get better shoes next time. Thanks for organizing the event.
Came on at Devonport with Rick and his team of merry cachers. Got to the top and waited for Zork and his "fast" tractor.
Did the EC at the crater While I waited.
Great event, looking foward to the next, thanks to those that came up and introduced themselves, nice meeting you!
Took some photos, and some video.

AnnaFromSweden and my first event, and definitely not our last! We had a great time! Thanks for organizing this event!
It was great to meet several of you, even though I was only able to catch the afternoon ferry to Rangitoto. Don't know if I count as an ATTENDED since I was only arriving at the wharf while you were lunching together at the Summit.
Zorgon/Richard stumbled upon me after 3 at Mr. Lava Lava in Wilson Park Track. Then we continued on to Island Rock. I sure apprecaited the companionship & the introductions to Glyn & Kay, Chris & Cameron, including having a chance at Back to School! A few others of you were pointed out to me on the ferry, but I'll hope to meet you at Hamilton's event in March.
Hoping Rumo and Rala made it back by kayak!
Looked like tough going as we left them in our wake!
Thanks to St. Ouens for all the hard work and good fun that went in to this event! Hope you enjoyed it enough to start planning the next one!

We brought the Anderson’s over with us, the family who introduced us to Geocaching, and a great day had was by all the family and friends.
After 10Km of walking Connor (7 years old) was a little sore and grumpy but loved the lava caves.
Finally dropped off the Lava Travel Bug we've been holding onto especially for this event.

Man what a cool event, really enjoyed meeting all the fellow cachers from far and wide. we had a big big day, we left Tauranga at 4.30am and collected nofixedaboders in waihi on the way to the event. getting home around 9.30pm.
with the team assembled, tribe of 4, helirc, nofixedaboders and myself we set off for the rock, I was wearing the right hat from the day, Alcatraz/ psycho ward/ outpatient.
we attacked with vigor until we sat down for lunch where i think some of us ralaxed a bit much.
i had a good day as my leg had been put to either the test or the sword, i can't figure out which 1 yet. i had only been off crouches for just over a week so a big effort was required.
a big thanks to St Owens for organising the event and also to zork v for helping me with the tickets for the ferry.
awesome awesome awesome
PS enjoyed the play in the sand pit at devonport with nofixedaboders before the ferry arrived, cheers

Awesome! Glad we made a full adventurous weekend of it. Kayaking over with Rumo & Ralo and M2ZT3 on Saturday, and joined by Tramper Ted overnight in the hut. We managed to do the new caches on the island before dinner - M2ZT3 ran all the way to Issy Bay, and to the summit - leaving us with Sunday to play in that awesome lava cave. Biggest I've seen!
The kayak trip back against the wind and waves was a hard slog - especially after all the exercise on the island. We did get back all right, thankfully!
Thanks St. Ouens for a top-class event! One that will be talked about for some time to come.
Cheers, M@

Awesome Event. First time to the island. Attended this with Rick-a-Mortis, Tribe of 4 and Nofixedaboders. I struggled in some parts but would do it again. It was amazing that when we got to caches there were either only a few or no other cachers visible so we still had to find them. Thanks for putting on an awesome event.
A Huge Thank You to St. Ouens for organising a great event. It was really enjoyable to catch up with some familiar faces and to swap a few stories!! To those I did not have the opportunity to introduce myself to "Hi" "Hope to catch up with you at other events scheduled around the country" Some great hides on the Island, and great caches that I may not have done otherwise. The lava caves were brilliant, blisters ouch..prevented Tash from attempting the secret Lava caves, but thankfully Gencuster had taken the first aid kit from the car the plasters came in very handy So she managed all the caches on the Island and the walk to the summit....
So pleased to see that the kayaker's arrived home safely the sea was looking a bit choppy as we waved goodbye from the ferry. A last wee slog up the hill to collect the car from the Hotel carpark...& home to Rotorua @10pm..after a short stop for dinner on the way...Awesome event Thank You.

We are going to pop across in the boat and anchor at Issy bay, we are bringing a couple of other geocachers with us.
Mainly want to drop of "Lava Tour Travel Bug".

And a good day was had by all. Good to catch up with a lot of faces and get to know a few better! Thanks for a great event St Ouens.
What a great day - Thanks St O for this opportunity to experience the real ending of lotr series - it was magic!
Thanks to all who made my birthday one to remember!

Great weekend, staying at the bach was a real plus. Enjoyed helping St Ouens with guiding the mysterious cave and seeing people's appreciation of the opportunity, what a find, it must be the best example of a lava cave in Auckland. Thanks St O for organising a great day out and for the effort in adding 4 caches for us to enjoy.
Thanks to those that did the work for the great day had by all. It was our 1st event and we were happy to put faces that went with logs and caches around the greater area. We will sleep very well tonight after a long soak in the bath.

A BIG thank you from St. Ouens to Tramper Ted (Jim and Jill), the.pud (Michael and Sharon), and Tofska (Matt) for acting as guides through the cave. Without your help it simply couldn't have happened.
A very enjoyable 1st event-cache and great to meet so many people and put faces to the names in the log-books. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks St Ouens for organising it all, and to the lave-cave guides - what a special place!
Another great day... Was great to meet up with the regulars and meet some new cachers.. Managed to knock off all caches on the island.. and walked 18km in the process. Thanks StO for the great day.

Wow what a great day. Huge thanks to St Ouens Jill, Ted and all the other helpers and participants for a wonderful and nicely exhausting day. XC and I marched 18km in total and loved the newly placed caches.. great camo and one delightfuly cheeky hide. It was fun to meet up with the old hands and meet some very new cachers.
A most satisfying day, superbly put together by St Ouens. Weather was kind to us and the company of fellow addicts topped it off. Rangitoto is such a special place, great to be back. Cheers!

Thanks for a great event St Ouens. Had a great day. Good to catch up with fellow cachers. Really enjoyed the cave tour. Cheers
Wow!, the events get bigger & better!, this has to be one of the best, thanks so much for Mark & his co-workers, & your patience in the stragglers!--Thanks again--Glyn & Kay.
What a fantastic day!! I would like to add my thanks to St Ouens for all the time that went into organising it. The highlight for me (apart from catching up with everyone of course ) was the visit to the "secret" lava cave - just awesome. Signed the log in blood - no not really but most of the visitors probably could have
Legs are telling me they did a bit of walking today.

Woohoo – what a fantastic way to bring up another milestone. Many thanks Mark, for all the effort in organising a such great event, and also to your capable lieutenants for their assistances in the secret lava caves (AWESOME - thoroughly enjoyed the tour). Nice to catch up with the regulars, and to meet some new faces as well.

Well after being marched into a kangaroo court i was wondering if I would be allowed to attend. Thankfully all charges were dismissed and we could attend.
Great day out, thoughorly enjoyed the caves experience and as always, meeting the familiar and the new.

Finally, after some sleep and rest for our aching muscles, we are able to write a little bit more:
Yesterday, when we evaluated the logfiles, we found out that in total we had made 15km by kayak and 30km by feet. No wonder that our bodies cry for rest. But we loved every second of our weekend on this special island. From the trip over, the stay in the hut, all the walking together with a bunch of wonderful people, nature at its best and in raw format, beautiful caves, colourful rainbows, golden sunsets/rises, soft rain... what else do outdoor people need?
Thanks to everybody who was there and thus made it even more special. It was good to catch up with some of you and to read all the concerned mails/logs about our safe return.
Thanks especially to St. Ouens (event), M@ (bach, kayak and "towing service"), M2ZT3 (spending time...), and Tramper Ted (...and wine), and everybody else.
Some photos are attached to this log, some can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stefan_marks/tags/gc20080217/

12:30 Wow what a great day to climb up a volcano. It was great to meet so many new faces and some fellow westies "Mistcube".
The walk to the top was pretty hot, but great fun and we event found a few caches on the way up. Everyone we meet seemed to be a Geocacher as well
We ascended the top with Glyn and Kaye and also Rueben "evofreak?"
Unfortunately due to injury I couldn't do the caving part, which was a bummer so I did the mini lava cave earth cache instead. Which was great fun.
Congrats to the YuGeo4 team on the milestone of 1200 finds, always great to catch up you guys.
Thanks to Mark and everyone else that helped arrange this get together we both had a great time. And also thanks for all the new caches on the Island.
Took: Wimbo Ray TB, Kalamari's Kousin TB and Holiday Lights Geocoin--Blue Geocoin

12:39 and we made it to the top - cool day - 274 m above sea level & 719 m total ascent over the course of the day...
Many thanks St. Ouens for organising this - was great to see some cachers that I'd met previously at Tramper Ted's Christmas Soiree - the Sequel (Akld) and others that I'd corresponded with. Also the 'new - to me' cachers that I met on the way up and down and around the mountain... Been to events in Ashburton, Wellington, Palmerston North and Auckland now. The island seemed to have cachers popping up everywhere...
Thanks again...

Thanks to St Ouens for organising this event and adding caches to the island - the team really enjoyed catching up with fellow geocachers, the wonderful views from Rangitoto, finding a few more caches. Thanks once again St Ouens,
Spy3 attended this day and had a fantastic, and exhausting, time. Thanks St. O for the organisation and the caches. As new cachers we were pleased with our results for the day and it was just fantastic to meet everyone and put some faces to names. Thanks again. Michelle and Ian
will be attending with xmuggle. Look forward to meeting some more cachers
OK. All set for tomorrow?
Don't forget the water, sunblock and food.
Arrive at the ticket office with plenty of time to spare- could be busy.
Look out for me (I'll have a badge) and grab a copy of the cache for the day - Back to School! I'll answer any unsolved questions at lunchtime!
Catch up or meet new caching colleagues or the trip across then once we get to Rangitoto head off and find some of those caches.
Meet up at lunchtime at the summit - sometime between 11:30am and 1:00pm
Then in the afternoon carry on caching or visit the true ending of LOTR3.
Keep an eye on the time. Ferries leave at 3:30pm and 5:00pm.
By now Tofska, M2TZ3, Rumo & Rala and Tramper Ted should be putting their feet up and enjoying the evening sun - they're staying overnight.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone tomorrow.

With regard to potable (drinkable) water on the Island, the guys who manage the bach report saltwater in the drinking water so assume no water on the Island.

Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday (except for the early birds, mmmmmmmmmmmm, worms...)
6 sleeps and counting! Here is some IMPORTANT information to help you maximise you REC-reation experience this coming weekend.
1) The cache listing has been updated including new / additional waypoints - check the information.
2) If you're planning to join the group exploring the true ending to LOTR3 in the afternoon then you'll have a lot of fun, provided you take note of the following precautionary instructions. We've had a dry run with a geocaching family - Linleye - including Claw of the Forest who is nine years old.
You a) need to send an e-mail to St. Ouens advising of numbers so we can organise enough guides b) MUST wear suitable footwear (e.g. proper walking shoes) c) MUST bring a small torch (headwear lights are best - hands free - but not required) c) long trousers, gloves and hat are definitely a good idea (the scoria will scratch and you will draw blood - watch you head) d) MUST be able to scramble 6 feet up/down a rock wall with the aid of a rope and with the assistance of others e) MUST be personally responsible at all times - if you don't feel comfortable, say so.
3) Matt (tofska - see logs) has organised a bach (sleep out) for Saturday night on a first come first served basis. Incredibly cheap for an amazing chance to spend the night on Rangitoto (no artificial lights - look back to Auckland - play scarey hoo hoo etc). Please contact him directly. The location is shown on the additional waypoints.
3) Gandalf has returned briefly and rumour has it, will, if provided with Orc sausages and Hobbiton beer, reveal information important to the journey of the Fellowship through FOTR1, LOTR2 and LOTR3. This is on Friday night (15th) and again the waypoint is shown on the updated cache listing. Please send an e-mail re attending for catering purposes.
4) All things being equal several new caches will appear in time for the event including Earth caches. Makes sure you read what "measurements" you need to make and have suitable "equipment" if needed. You will receive details of one cache on joining the 9:15am Sunday 17th Feb ferry.
5) Take lots of water and sunblock and hat. I was there this weekend and used 2 litres and still lost several pounds weight. Food and drinks are available on the ferry.
Well, I thing that's it - Rangtitoto, it really is a special place.
Kitty is coming too.... happy to get her fur ruffled climbing rocks and crawling in caves......cat or mouse... squeak Can provide additional rope, belay gear and harness for "climb" ????
Looking forward to the fun rain or shine.

Hi Guys. Hope some of you have the stamina to walk to "Issy Bay Crossroads". The ferry takes you to Rangitoto Wharf from where you can ride or walk to the top. Islington Bay is about an hours walk (one way)for middle aged wizards, but worth it, particularly if you return by the coastal track to Rangi Wharf.
Take heaps of water, strong shoes and sun protection. The water on the island is not drinkable! Take your own. You never know, there might be a yacht called "Pinball Wizard" in the bay too.

Oh drat! This was to be my 3rd geocaching event in 10 days but plans have changed and I'll be winging out the previous evening. Hope you all have a great day!!!
FINAL (I hope) INSTRUCTIONS re TICKETS.
Arranging a group discount is proving difficult. In order to get the 10% discount I would have to front up and make a payment on behalf of the group - i.e. hundreds of dollars... and for the sake of $2 per adult it hardly seems worth it.
So, go online and see if you can get a super saver price, otherwise front up on the day.
I asked about the impact of the Devonport Wine and Food Festival and whether the ferry would get over booked, however I'm told that entirely separate ferries are used for the Festival so we should be fine.
The Rangitoto ferry apparently goes from same pier as the Waiheke ferry (PIER 2) and there's a ticket office there.

As we cannot use the bus for our daily commute to work, we will be giving the new northern bus way a go , to get to the ferry( and save us looking for a car park). Leaving from the Constellation Dv station at 08h25 will get you to Brittomart at 08h47 - heaps of time to catch the 09h15 ferry.

Will be attending + 2 Children and looking forward to another Auckland Event, fun in the sun and a ferry ride to an Island getaway...Nice to catch up with some Auckland cachers..
I plan to leave Devonport on the 9:25 AM sailing and will hope to be on the last boat off Rangitoto Saturday night. No kayaking or sleeping over for me, but a full day of fun in the sun with geocachers. Does this work with the group fare or am I outside of that since I'm starting in D'port? No worries.
Another booking for one please. Catching a ride with Rick-a-mortis so will be doing what he is doing....and that in it's self could make an interesting day!
YuGeo(four) will be attending, would like to see the real (alternate) ending for the Return of the King.
At last the reign of the Dark Lord is over. We ventured forth in our merry band to save Frodo and his friends from certain doom.
As the dark clouds hovered over Mt Doom we climbed and clambered through the treacherous terrain to find the pit of darkness. The sky sent down steadily increasing jets of drenching liquid as we descended into gloomy darkness down the twisted rope. With the tallest and strongest helping the weaker and smaller members of our intrepid band we were soon safely out of sight underground.
Finally we were on our way to the true ending of our quest. The roots hung menacingly low, dripping down our necks as we brushed past. The silvery walls were lit by our torches as we pushed ever deeper into the dark, cool tunnel.
There seemed to be so many places to search but at last the cry went up as our eagle-eyed Maverick spied what we were looking for. After such a huge quest, lasting nearly two years and using up much mental and physical energy, we made a triumphant return to the daylight.
(Thanks St. Ouens for taking us on this highly enjoyable adventure and we know that everyone going to the event cache will have a fantastic time)

I guess you'd call it a dry run, albeit slightly damp on the day.
South Island LOTR fanatics Linleye (inc Richard, and Auckland pals Faye and Richard) and Claw of the Forest - who have completed the Trilogy agreed to act as guinea pigs for the TRUE ending of the Return of the King - the Final Moments.
The photos are an appetiser and an indicator of things to come - the entrance hole is 1.5 shoulder widths wide, the rope is as per school gym, and the floor is 6 feet below the hole.
NOTE: this is only an option for the event!

All righty - I've managed to book one of the Rangitoto Baches for Saturday night! So, yes you can find all the caches on Rangitoto/Motutapu in one visit without rushing for the ferry . It only sleeps 10 (12 if two don't mind sleeping on the floor) - 3 of which are for those who can climb and don't roll in their sleep! About $8 for the privilege.
First in, First served! - send me an email and I'll send you more info.
Cheers, M@

Everyones posting notes so I had better jump on the bandwagon.
If leaving from Devonport, remember its the food and wine festival down there on that day, and the traffic is wicked, so leave plenty of time!!

I've contacted Fullers and they indicated that discounts of 10% i.e. $2 off the adult fare of $20 return apply for groups of 15-29 and 15% i.e. $3 off for groups of 30+ (children don't factor for these discounts).
A family pass at $52 for 2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children yields a $10 discount so Gr8dad and Rick-a-Mortis are better to take this option for example.
In order to cement in the discount I need to tell Fullers who is travelling on which sailing each way and now with Matt's note, which day. Phew! If you want me to follow up can you reply with the above info by say end Thursday 7th?
TRACTOR RIDE TO SUMMIT
I enquired about this and the deal is a $30 for a 2 hour guided tour round the island returning to the ferry. Might suit some but you'll miss the lunchtime gathering unless your happy to enjoy half a tour and get off at the top and walk down. If you want to use this you need to book it - still plenty of spaces apparently. I'm happy to book it if you want me to.

STOP PRESS:
Having given you the guff about discounts I followed up on Rick-a-mortis's log saying you could get a family saver ticket for $35. Fullers didn't mention it when I spoke to them but it appears that if you book online you get the cheaper price if there are still saver tickets available.
Here's the link to the relevant page. The discounts apply to adults and children separately too. You'll need to select the date 17 Feb and press proceed where you'll get a screen with the saver prices.
http://www.fullers.co.nz/index.php/pi_pageid/241?route=rangitoto
So I suggest everyone tries to grab the saver tickets by booking early and if they run our we can see if there are enought remaining for a group discount.
THANKS RICK

Kayak distance approx 6 km. This is from Okahu bay to the wharf. best done early or in a larger group. Rumo 3 Rala, I '11 send you some details. I May be able to borrow a good boat for the trip.
cheers, Mark.
cheers, Mark.
Take plenty of food, water and sunscreen. The scoria gives off a lot of heat. The tap in the restrooms is probably rainwater, which would be OK to drink if you are not too fussy, but better to bring your own. They always tell you not to drink it to cover themselves.
put us down for 2--thanks! will do the whole day, how many other caches attempted will depend on if we are up to on the day. Would also like to do the previous ones in the LOR series before this event.

Mordor&Andre will be at this event!!! Just planning a road trip from Wellington from 13th and ending up in Aukland on 16th or 17th and Wow! a neat sounding event cache happens to coincide with my plans!!! Have a meeting in ChCh on 18th so will probably have to fly out night of 17th. Probably just me and maybe a non-geocaching mate (2 more adults for big boat please). Look forward to meeting new cachers and will bring some goodies from upcoming West Coast and Nelson Event Caches. See you then!
So, is there water on the Island??? Looking at the map there are Rest Rooms, which would suggest Tap Water?
Can someone confirm?
Can someone confirm?
1 tap in toilet handbasin, but they tell you on the Ferry that it is not drinking water, so I would not like to risk it. --There is also a salt-water swimming pool so take bathing suits,,, if you end up with a wait for the next ferry, a cool dip would be lovely.
***TAKE HEAPS OF DRINKING WATER *** I climbed to the Summit today with my 3 grandchildren - (Fantastic & worth the visit) but there is no fresh water on the island and I would advise at least a full 1.5 litre per person if its a hot sunny day ! -- I am sorry that I will be back in Christchurch when this is on, but good luck ! Hope it all goes well !

Would love to atend - but event conflicts with watching the motorcycle street racing in Paeroa... so unfortunately I'll not be able to make it
will try to attend this 1, how many caches are on the island and can you take bikes on the ferry?
will try to attend this 1 with the stiff guy and the tribe, depending on the work oncall rosters
