My friend Sophia and I are exploring the Waiarapa Coast at Tora. Awesome place to visit with Zara carrying a few extra stones on the way out. I love the holey pitted rocks and Sophia likes round flat white rocks. This cache was very sad with only a bag and mould log. Replaced with new container and Log to keep it going. Cheers

Zara and I came north to catch up with family and friends for Xmas with Rattll,s BBQ also on the radar. A surprise visit to the Etherlord Clan Saturday night and then a couple of days in Wanganui picking up some LABs and Trads to get Signal through the Castle Labyrinth. Then back to Paly and Wellington. Then with my friend aboard Zara,we did a side trip to Tora, Paihatua, Palmy, Foxton and back to Wellington. And awesome week travelling and catching up with friends with a little caching on the side.

Vistra and I were doing the Tora Coastal Walk when we happened upon this geocache at the shipwreck. Such a beautiful spot.

20-Apr-22
Found this with AliGle while completing the Tora Coastal walk, took the side trip out to the Opua wreck and soon found the cache at GZ. The log was a bit of a mess and un signable, so I have taken a photo of the cache as proof if required. TFTC!

Quick find. Staying a couple of nights in motorhome.

Paper and plastic bag wet and need replacement. Cheers

There is no way you can sign this log. It is completely waterlogged. The next person attempting this needs to bring a replaced log. Tftc.

Out for a drive around the Wairarapa for the day to visit a few people and collect a few caches. This was one of the caches. Very cool location, I always enjoy spending time out here. TFTC.

Well it has only taken about 13 years to grab this cache which is under two hours from home. We don't visit this part of the coast often and last time I was here I wasn't caching. Being Waitangi weekend, a group of us booked a house about 10km back from the beach and we headed down here, in various groups to walk, fish, photograph and explore. I headed south to grab this cache, as well as get some shots of the Opua shipwreck. Unfortunately not a lot could be seen of the boat as it was almost high tide when I arrived, but I managed to get back at a more appropriate time the following day.

As for the cache, the general GZ became obvious as I approached, but the sign on the paddock gate saying there was no entry without prior permission made me nervous. The sign didn't contain any useful information about who the owners are or how to get in contact with them. Since the area was pretty deserted still this early in the weekend I took a risk, jumped the fence and had the cache in hand quickly. Before leaving civilisation I had seen the note from GSEL suggesting a new cache container may be useful. I made sure I had one with me before leaving home, but on arriving here I found it was too small to accommodate the existing logbook. After logging my find I have shoved the cache contents as far into my container as I could before replacing it, but the cache has no lid and the bits are protruding from one end. With two plastic bags and a fairly sheltered spot it should be ok for the summer, but may need reviewing before winter arrives. TFTC J 'N' K. Great to finally get here.

A great journey with Ethness along this coast. Never been here before and will probably never be here again. It's great where geocaching takes us. Thanks for the cache.

After visiting White Rock we decided to change plans and come here. I like this coast line - so different to the scenery I normally see.
Out and about with Jude_E in the southern Wairarapa, not only geocaching but showing her the scenery as well.
Signed JE. TFTC

After a scrounge and tricky extraction we found a pencil and the original logbook, but no container… weird. Didn’t have anything large enough to hold the logbook, so double bagged it and returned significantly easier to access. Thanks for another J 'N' K, and my last for the fun excursion with GSEL and Infoferret today. Found a yummy Roast shop in Featherston for dinner!

16-Aug-20
BFG and I hopped the fence, where his longer reach proved invaluable in extracting the logbook. However, despite the logbook being in good condition. it had no container or bag with it, so we improvised additional protection for it from what we had on hand. TFTC.

#8227. I had a bunch of unfound caches out near White Rocks that I had been hoping to get to for some time. My last visit to that area must have been 25-30 years ago. The weather forecast for Sunday had been great all week so once I knew we were not leaving Level 2 lockdown I asked Infoferret and Barefootguru if they were keen on a trip over to the eastern flank of the North Island. Both were keen to go. The weather forecast unfortunately took a dive for the worst on Saturday and so by Sunday there were showers or light rain predicted out east. However the geocaching gods were on our side for once (must have consoled them with my quota of DNF's of late). We mostly stayed dry all day with just a skiff or two of light rain passing by. So another fun day in the Wairarapa once again. Such a great area to geocache in.

This is my first visit to Tora. Been to White Rocks once before but did not come out to this section of the coast. A really interesting place to visit with its limestone outcrops, baches and the bonus of an old shipwreck. Interesting to read the history of this wreck. The cache itself unfortunately needs some TLC. BFG spied some residue of it down in the gaps of the rock and with some deft hand movements managed to prise out the original logbook and a pencil but the container itself is gone. Unfortunately we did not have a replacement container with us to house the logbook. Just a few mint tins. So signed the logbook and double bagged this in plastic bags. Left it in an easier place to access. Be good if the next finder remembers to bring a new container with them. Thanks for the cache J'N'K.

No luck finding this one. We think it might have been muggled as we found what looked to be the remnants of one (see photo).
Thanks for all the detail on the shipwreck. We loved the history lesson.

After doing White Rock cache, it became a must do cache this one! While driving to it rusty explained to me and Rebel that she came here many years ago before she got into caching to do a farm walk from a lodge further up the road to this beach. But she never got to see the shipwreck near this cache. So since we now have a hired car for 3 days and this is our 2nd day of our adventure, we came here. mind you... it was getting late, my foto at the cache was taken at 6:44pm, so I jumped the fence on our behalf to find the cache and it was a little exposed but still hidden from prying eyes. Saw the plaque about David Breakwell.

So once the cache was signed off, me and rusty went across the farmland to get closer to the shipwreck. It is getting cold now, so jerseys are in order. Got some nice late evening fotos, weather is dry and calm, a great evening! A Pity we have such a long drive to get back to Waimeha camp ground near Cape Palliser, our place of stay. It would be a real blast to just camp here near the cache along with the sheep here.

With a group of Westies hunting for some caches, thanks for the hide!

11-Mar-18
We have just driven from White Rock, out to Tora Big Grin

The sun is still shining and we have no wind! its about 7.30 pm, so no time to walk to the other shipwreck.

Many years ago I did the Tora 3 day private walking tour - before caching Wink

So here we are today, looking for the gate, and making our way to GZ. The tide has come in, so what is left of the steamer is marooned in the water. Time for some photos, and a chance to explore the beach.

Thanks J 'N' K for the hide and bringing us here (some wild Westies: rustynz, rebel98 and gorby).

Was very pleased to see there was a cache here !
Have just done the gruelling day one of the Tora Coastal Walk .....
After early dinner some of our Walking Group decided to walk from Stony Bay Lodge to see the shipwreck.
Luckily it was low tide !
Took longer than we thought ....but got some lovely photos and had a quick find of the cache.
Thanks J'N'K.

I am working my way north after being to the Cape and White Rock, now it is Tora's time.

Passed the 'Tora, Tora Tora!!!' music festival while heading out to this one - also lots of surfies and campers along the coastline for Easter. Can say as far as I'm aware I have never been to this part of the coastline (well, not in any memory i still hold). Interesting nearby shipwreck and memorial. After finding this drove further up the road, but it appears to terminate at a farmgate , so then it was time to do another about-turn and return the (dusty) way I had come. Thanks for the cache placement waaaaaaay out here in the boonies. Lovely spot.

Found on another long day, and around 300km along gravel roads, but fantastic autumn weather. Great way to spend Easter Friday.

TFTC!

14-Dec-14
After completing Day 1 of the Tora Coastal walk the previous day in rainy, cloudy, cool weather it was a big bonus to be able to head along the coast in dry, warm and reasonably still conditions.
Enjoyed the coastal scenery and can only imagine the rugged weather that must be fairly common here.
Nice to have a cache placed not far from the amazing Stony Bay Lodge. Nice quick find. TFTC Smile

great day for bike along the coast. tftc

#5659. The Tora coast was full of surfers today. Pretty quiet around GZ ... guess it's not much fun surfing near the Opua. Found the entrance gate, so avoided having to climb over the barb-wired fence. Nice hide. TNLNSL. TFTC.

Another great holiday day caching in the Wairarapa. And another magic spot. The coast is fantastic. Thanks for the hide.

This cache has had not nearly enough visitors. Tora is a great place for geocachers to check out.

It was my visit to this location and Netty had not been here for many a year.

I took Max the Guinea Pig Travel Bug and left a shape puzzle game.

Find #394 - Our second find on our second day of our three day Wairarapa Caching trip, which involved hiding sprees in central Wairarapa and White Rock. We rose nice and early at 0530 hours after camping the night at Tora, we stopped by and completed the "Manurewa Point Reserve" Earthcache, before journeying on to this cache, which is our final out here. It must have been about 8am by the time we finally got here. It was suprisingly hazy, considering the lack of wind, and the glare of the rising sun over the ocean made it hard to photograph the shipwreck, but we tried our best. We decided climb over the electric fence. Found the cache shortly after, which was in good condition. Thanks for bringing us here J'N'K. SL TFTC.

As I was driving, I did exactly that.... Took the opportunity of being 'over the hill' to visit. "I'm with him' walked up and found the cache by dead reckoning while I took photos of the wreck...

Many Thanks for an epic cache. Cheers, GC.

A nice drive out and respite from the Martinborough Fair. Particularly like the bit from Ruakokopatuna to Tora. TFTC

02-Feb-08
I have always admired the likes of Juha Kukkanen and Mikka Hakkanen and the stretch from Ruakokopatuna to Tora was nice little short rally stage. The cache site itself was a clever conceal and located in aspot away from the prying eyes of Muggles. I had been out here before there was a cache set here so I was glad there is now a cache in place.

COULD I MAKE ONE SUGGESTION

I think this cache needs a companion cache at Te Awaiti. Th road around there is very dramatic and the blue/azure of the Pacific ocean down below is rather awe-inspiring, not to mention picturesque. I was out there in October 2006 and took this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tremeglan/279750265/

A companion cache at Te`Awaiti, perhaps even up near the Trig Station, would make for a great day out. Don't people who drive out all that way deserve more than one cache to record?

27-Jan-08
That's quite a drive out there and was pleased to be able to pick up another cache along the way. Enjoyed our visit to this wild and rugged coast, sure wouldn't want to be here in a roaring southerly. Interesting to see the wreck too. Quick find - nice clue Wink

A FTF on the FIRST day of the Year 2008. Big Grin Hair pin bends and a part metal road just clinging to the sides of the hills in some places, tended to make the passenger's stomach churn once or twice. But the spectacular 360° views included the ocean several kms away. Easily discovered and in a great hiding place, the co-ords for the cache were spot on. Beautiful day but very windy. Unfortunately Fox the Trout TB could not fit in the container and he would have ended up a squishy mess if we had insisted. Red Face Lo and Behold…………we were stopped by two Fishery Officers on our return trip from Tora. High on a hill, they insisted on searching our vehicle, and checking in the Esky. The disappointed look on their faces made me think of Fox. I instantly produced the TB for them to measure and check for weight and size. Both men ended up with cheeky looks and let us go on our merry way. Fox lives on………but I am sure it was only coz I put my finger over his mouth to shut him up. Razz
In…LJ Hooker Peppermint Container
