So many stairs to walk up before arriving at this cache. Cache was in plain sight. Covered with natural camo so it doesn't get muggled. Tftc
I very much enjoyed the excuse to stop here, we read the history and caught our breaths. The cache was waterlogged, we dried best we could, paper was quite damp but will be ok. TFTC #292
Our plan for today was to walk the track from Karamatura to Mount Donald. There are plenty of muggles here but once we had left the lower track they soon disappeared. Made our way up the hill. Stopped to catch our breathes and made another find. Thanks for the history behind this one.
I'm in Auckland to spend the weekend with the my grown up kids and their families who live down here. Friday I cached the Mahurangi area and got a nice haul. Today's plan is to join the Auckland Geocachers in the morning for a walk in the Waitakere Ranges. Sunday's plan is to watch my Grandkid play hockey then hang out and relax at their place.
I had a very sucessful caching weekend so I was very pleased to see that my May souvenir is in the bag once I have completed my logs.
Signed as Team FLAG: flossieteacake, Lostcourse, Lis's crew and Gorby. A great group walk after the event. An interesting cache description thanks. Mike gave us a rundown at gz but nice to have time to read it properly at home. Definitely a major under taking logging in these steep places. Thanks _Pax_ and tramyard for all the caches and cache maintenance along this track

With Team Flag. Gorby had already found this cache on a previous expedition, so he could direct us straight to it, and Lis was the first to reach around.
We had a quick rest here whilst Gorby gave us a history lesson. It is mindboggling to think of them digging it out by hand, never mind getting up here in the first place.

Team Flag (Flossieteacake, Liz's Crew, Myself and Gorby) did the walk and this series of caches from the Mount Donald McLean car park down to the Karamatura Valley. It took us approximately three hours, cache finding and general chatting time included. A nice easy find was executed here as previous finder Gorby had a solid recollection as to where the hide was. It was interesting to check out the Cut for a bit before we left and I enjoyed reading the information on the cache page back at home; favourite point applied. Cheers for the cache placement, the history and the exercise!
Came by here again, this time with Lostcourse, flossieteacake and Lis's crew, I was able to direct them straight to the cache, they appreciated that. Then it was those dreaded stairs all the way down to the falls to look forward to.
A day to myself walking the Donald McLean and Karamatura tracks.
A busy stretch of track as muggles rested on the way up and down.
Happily, I was able to find a few moments to tuck my hand in and pull out a cache. A nice golden oldie too.
Thanks for keeping this one alive ags

Instantaneous find here, probably the quickest and easiest of the day. I love to think about how many muggles will just walk on by these caches and have no idea...
This was my last one before turning around & heading back to the donald carpark. But my luck had run out. At the exact time i came around the corner to GZ, 2 hikers had just come up the stairs & decided to sit down on their bags right at GZ. So i walked on down the 1st set of stairs & waited for them to leave. They finally left & i went back up to make a quick find. This was my turn around point and time to head back to the car. TFTC
I'd made a couple of walks up this track but our old dog was not good to continue up these steps. We bought our young dog this time who still had energy to try hunting for possums along the way. Thankfully we had her on a leash or one of those steep drops could be very dangerous for her. Tftc
Tftc!

Dear owners, as geocaching should be entertainment, rest time from daily routines and work I would like to enjoy every minute outside. So Im sorry that Im not wasting my time on writing story to every log and watching the display. I spent a lot of time infront various displays. I prefer to drop few more words to very special situation like obstackles to find, bad state of cache etc.., and if there is amazing story to share, of course. Thank you for placing the cache, taking care about it and understanding.

Out with Team SEAC for the day looking for caches. Got the message from NZTravellers for a sudden place change as his these FTFs turned up. Made our way out here to begin the trail. Thanks for the cache
A long weekend and the usual Team SEAC adventure had been planned by Keylev starting to day. The idea was for a convoy of cars to head up north walk a reginal park while grabbing some caches.
On my way to Keylev's place this group of FTF's were released NOT where we were going. When I arrived at Keylev's immediately muted the idea of changing plans and heading for these FTFs. Knowing Keylev had spent a lot of time organising todays adventures I didn't want to appear to bossy HOWEVER with the number of FTFs going we just had to. Trouble was people were already in cars heading to the organised walk. A quick video chat with all participants and everyone agreed FTFs were the way to go.
So we all changed direction and headed to the start for an eventual day. The logs were signed as Team SEAC including HeMaLuDy, Stik-a-Crane, NurseDr, Keylev, UncleSamNZ, Cragger, BrowneHornet, Liverkiwi, @McArgister and B4Dawn meaning a huge group FTF list for these caches!
This wasn't part of the FTF group but seemed rude not to claim this on they way through our walk

I was out with Team SEAC on an FTF mission at raking in the amazing atmosphere of this track, which I’d never visited before. This was in-between some new caches so of course we stopped to sign in. A few of us were here first and while we paused for others to make their way up, I nipped down the big cut. There’s a whole other adventure down there! Anyway, back at the train and we all signed in together and moved off to continue our hunt. Thanks for the cutting cache!
In the absence of a MEGA event this Labour Weekend, Keylev had spent some time planning a Mega Mysterious Weekend for members of Team SEAC (a group of cachers from south and east Auckland who often cache together). Today's plan was to head north, but as we left home the notifications of new caches on this trail came through and we made a quick change of plans. In the group today is HeMaLuDy, Stik-a-Crane, NurseDr, Keylev, UncleSamNZ, Cragger, BrowneHornet, Liverkiwi, B4Dawn, @McArgister.
Thanks for the cache here. Nice to have regular breaks from all the stairs to find a cache.

Was just about to set off for an adventure up North with Team SEAC when a flurry of publications flooded the in box....within minutes chatter spiked up, and a video chat started about attempting the FTF's on this group of caches, and with a few of us keen on this option the plan changed, and we headed over to our new destination, which was also 10mins closer....
Arriving at the designated parking spot, we decided to drop a car at the end to enable us to carry on caching the area after the trail completion, but as we drove we noted the increase in elevation....discussed changing our starting point, enabling the trail to be more down hill, but decided that we might loose the FTF potential......
Once back to the starting point, and all participants had arrived, we set out on the trail......
Had to grab a few others along the way... since we were here....

Out with Team Seac for another day of adventures. We weren’t planning on coming this way, we had another full day planned elsewhere, but while enroute we got the alerts of some new caches, and we couldn’t take the opportunity to miss these….so we changed our google maps while driving and found our new destination.
Sorry for the generic logs. Thank you for taking the time to place this cache.

Labour Weekend has historically been a minimum 3 day Team SEAC all out adventure so a little while ago I started planning some fun for us. Today was all set for a walking day up north but as we were leaving the house the notifications started coming through....quick team lets head in an alternative direction....its a Mega Mysterious Weekend after all!!
After some video calls to ensure everyone knew the correct meeting spot, a quick car shuffle, an additional team member joining at last minute - it was an impressive pull into the carpark for McArgister, we were hot on the trail.
Still huffing and puffing (I can see why this has the T rating it has!!).....nice quick find though, some pictures and then on our way.
Thanks for the cache.

Wow... That was a quick find and log... Also placed the cache a bit more under the plant as it was lying in the open behind the tree

Out for a day hike once again with the Auckland University Tramping Club - today there were 7 of us walking the Karamatura Track and Mt Donald McLean Track and back again. The weather was perfect - not too hot but bright and sunny. I'm always a bit concerned about whether to stop for caches since I don't want to hold up the rest of the group on these trips, but after all those stairs we all had a rest and the cache was only 6 meters away, perfect!
It was actually found by one of the others after I explained what I was up to, and he reached in and went "is this it?". I signed as "lumin298 + AUTC" and one of the others decided he wanted to sign too so there are 2 signatures in the log from us today.
All good with the cache, now onwards... and hopefully no more stairs! Thanks for placing it here!

I'm calling this my -3th find!! I was on an Auckland University Tramping Club (AUTC) day hike with lumin298 and few others where we all looked for this cache together! Technically it's my first find but at this point I was barely aware of what geocaching is (I think lumin298 has gotten me hooked.....we'll see). I see this is more of a prequel into what I hope will be a long series of (intentional) finds! What this space
I have been eyeing this cache up for years, and recently came to realise, that it's been more than 20 years since I came up to Karamatura falls. That's a long time! So I was quite in the mood for a good tramp. But being a Sunday, the carpark was packed! I had to park across the road in the the next carpark. The walk up to the falls via the newish caches is harder than taking the more easier and direct route, but like I said, I was out to get some tramping done.
So after getting some filming done of the falls, I carried on past. Stairs are the norm these days, and no doubt helicopters to fly them in. Stairs galore, they just kept going up and up and up. I remember when there were no stairs, and the track was not for the faint hearted. That was many years ago I experienced that, long before I got into geocaching.
Finally made it up, and found the cache after a quick search. Cache all good here today ags. I had intended to have lunch up here, but was not one bit interested in eating but I still walked thru the big cut to see how much dirt they dug out, massive. There must have been good money involved in extraditing the Kauri to make this cut worthwhile. It certainly would have been an impressive sight seeing the water flow thru this cut and down into the valley.
Thanks for the history lesson, it was the main reason I wanted to make it here today (and the oldish cache). Now, back down all those stairs!

It was quite a climb to GZ, a lot steeper than we thought and we came up here on a day that turned out to be a bit hotter than we expected. But regular stops and lots of water allowed us to continue on, as did the anticipation of finding this cache.
The cache didn't seem to be too far away but the number of meters to GZ counted down very slowly as the track turned back and forth. We encountered many muggles in various states of exhaustion which made us feel better about our level of fitness as many were feeling the pain worse than us.
Once at GZ the cache was quickly located and grabbed just as two muggles arrived.
We took the container a short distance away and hid it behind a bag as we signed the log while pretending to also have a drink of water.
The muggles decided to take the opportunity to have a rest right beside the hiding spot so we had to wait a few minutes before we could return it but finally they moved on and the coast was clear.
We headed back to the carpark and were amazed at how many people were now walking the trail. There was a constant stream of them heading up and many asked us if it was much further with hope in their eyes.
Once we passed the waterfall we passed many more muggles holding towels and dressed for swimming. Many of them asked us if it was much further to the waterfall.
When we arrived back at the carpark it was completely full with cars parked all along the access road as well as the main road.
We had no idea this track was so popular but it was probably more so than usual being anniversary weekend.
Thank ags for a very enjoyable, but somewhat exhausting, walk and for all the very interesting history.

Great Sunday leg stretcher I really enjoyed my walk to cache location. I was here before on Karamatura trail but I did not get so far. Today I almost reach Mount Donald McLean! It is so nice to see this track in such a great shape after recent renovation. I had a trouble to find the cache container by using hint. So I had to check previous logs and then it was an easy find. GPS pretty much bang on but is on the LEFT hand side when going up.
TFTC!
P.S. I was able to see White Stream at the waypoint provided on cache page. Access is not restricted anymore. Even without jab pass

Managed to get some reception at the top of the track and found out that I bypassed all the caches on the way up! Easily found due to good hint. Rehidden a little better. Good thing there weren't too many muggles. TFTC
Out here tramping with Vistra. A beautiful day for our trek and some interesting local history. A quick find here. TFTC
Wow what a walk up to this one ! Legs were screaming but was rewarded with a quick find TFTC
Nice walk up the hill with Lill' Red Hood.
Started at the bottom and all the way to Donald McLean and back.
Nice upgrade for the track.
Nice oldie, from the time I'd started caching.

Decided to do a sea to sky walk from Hinge Bay to Mt Donald McLean with kiwitrecker1 and the kids. I’m writing this log from the summit so we made it, looking forward to a lot of downhill on the return journey! Located this cache safe and well, great to have the history around the cut - thanks for updating / providing this cache!
Steps steps and around the corner more steps.
This is how you realize you have become very unfit over lock down.

This was my second time caching the Karamatura track in recent weeks.
Now this one has been replaced and re sited I was keen to get this cache also.
Nice fresh container and a much easier position....no need to leave the track.
Thanks for all the history in your description ....good to read.
Good day out with 3 geo mates!
Feeling my calves a bit now it is the day after! All the steps!

This was our target cache with Merlot58, Supernannny and Nette1234 today. We approached the cache gz from the newly opened Karamatura Track. The youngest and fittest of our group raced ahead up ALL the steps to gz and after a brief search found the cache on the LHS of the trail. Thank you for maintenance on this cache and replacing it. We were the first to sign the new log book and the first to find this cache in over 3 years.
Supernanny, Jag50, Nette1234 and I had a plan to walk up to to this replaced cache and to check out the new tracks. The youngest and fittest amongst us had found the cache by the time us older, less fitter ladies huffed and puffed up the steps. Did I mention steps? There are steps, lots of steps! Whew, now to head back down for a breather at the waterfall

New track is very nice. Lots and lots of steps above the Whites stream crossing. Cache full of water and in poor state. Retrieved old cache.
Need to change to a smaller cache container and move closer to the track. Will move and re-enable shortly.

The wife an i were completing the 2nd stage of the Hillary Trail today my legs deserved a well earned break after the climb up. I made a quick find at the GZ and we had a short break before onward and upward!
Quite a hike getting to GZ so it was the perfect opportunity for a pit stop for a drink/snack and cache find. I initially overshot the mark thinking I had found the right Rimu tree, but after failing to find the cache I trusted my GPS a bit more and soon had the cache in hand TFTC!
It was hot sweaty work getting up the hill today, but cool at GZ. Quick find. Log moist but signable. TFTC.
Needed a bit of a cardio workout after a big breakfast following the ABs beating Australia in the world cup. Arrived huffing and puffing and soon found the goods after a bit of a search. Inside of cache is a bit damp but log is still able to be written in. Sorry, didnt have time to let everything dry out. Tftc
Just when a rainy patch came in we found shelter at GZ to sign the log and outwait the short shower. TFTC
Today Mallorcatommy and I did a huge walk... all in all 23 kilometres in a wonderful forrest... started at the whatipu campground.. This cache was number ten... We found this one quickly.. Thank you!
Every day we are traveling around is same but also different. Today we had again the pleasure to visit some very beautiful spots and were also able to find nearly placed geocaches. I thank every single owner for placing it and giving us with doing this an other good reason to come here.
Out on camp completing my Bronze Duke of Ed and thought I would introduce the rest of the group to geocaching. Everyone loved it! TFTC!!!
Last find of the day with the whole Duke of Ed Camp group, the teacher found this one and was extremely happy. Neat little hiding spot. With geo-sen tftc
we were a bit puzzled on the clue ... the whole area looks like it was flooded not so long ago.
we found it thanks to Alligatornz who put us in the right direction. thanks for the bit of history

Out on a Monday hike with Natoratia, Lochnessmonsta, Alligatorsnz and a couple of geo-tolerant muggles. My GPSr died as soon as I reached GZ, so the phone took over, but was a bit dodgy. Needed Alligatorsnz (as past finder) to point us in the right direction! An interesting spot, TFTC!
out and about with Alligatorsnz, Vistra and natoratia (and 2 very tolerant muggles). training for up and coming MSC course...where am I? oh thats right out with the compass and map...none of that electronic stuff. very very muddy and up to the highest point in the waitakeres. found the cache ok after using our combined searching powers...thanks!!
Logging and all things Kauri run deep in the blood of my family, so was really interested in this one. So amazing to stand quietly in the big cut and marvel at the ingenuity, hard work and risks that our early NZ settlers took. A beautiful environment, but rugged place to work for sure. Found the cache after a couple minutes, and sat down for a bit to re-read the story of this locale and tried to imagine living and working here. Thanks for this one. A favourite point from me...this is what caching is about for me.
Ticked this one off on a Sunday afternoon stroll around Fletcher & Karamatura tracks. I regularly run/walk Karamatura track but finally got around to stopping here.
This cache was actually my very first introduction to geocaching several years ago, when my friends and I muggled a cacher and helped him find the cache.

knocking off the first chunk of the Edmund Hillary walk with nigelbarnes11. The weather was a little wet in the beginning when we left Arataki, but that soon blew away and we had a hot sunny summers day. The climb to the top of the hill was made harder by having only just had lunch about 10 minutes earlier.
The cache was found without any problems with the help of the hint!!

My daughter was doing her Duke of Edinburgh award tramp today and is a sometimes cacher (as doesn’t’[t have a GPSr).
The night before I was checking out their route to see if there were any caches that she could possibly find from the hint, while doing this I decided that I would take the opportunity (as I was dropping her off) to go for a hike myself.
Quick pack (most of the safety stuff stays packed) emergency call out backup contacted, lunch made – I was ready. Sometimes the impromptu adventures are the best.
I started out about ¾ an hour ahead of my daughters group, and hoped I’d be on the way down again by the time they passed. I wasn’t carrying a 10kg pack either.
Glad to have reached the top of the climb, took the opportunity, after finding the cache, to change into cooler clothing, was, I'm glad to say, warmer and thankfully drier than forecasted.
Always like learning the history of places, so thanks for bringing me here. TFTC

out for a bush day with the gang, snuck in to knock this one off while they continued to climb from the sea, might be winter but sure wish i had brought my light shirt.. tisssssss. Easy find all though while dry in side condensation was forming on the lid( i have found that painting mine black and keeping out of the sun seems to cure condensation problems..)
thanks for the cache, ill have to follow the cut another time when with out the gang of muggles..

Today we are on a mission to complete 10 T4 caches in a day for the Only a Matter of Time Challenge. We walked from the Mt Donald McLean car park to The Forks, then out on the Huia Ridge Track to Ghost Cache, before heading back to The Forks and down the Karamatura Track to Gibbons Big Cut. Loved the boardwalks at the top of the track, but soon enough we were dropping quite a bit of elevation. Some of the steeper bits here made us very glad we were not climbing all the way up from the valley. The cut itself is a very interesting spot and much deeper than we were expecting. The cache was found after a search that got just long enough to start to worry us. Signed the log for our 4th T4 cache of the day at 10.17am. Great place for a cache. Thanks.
Turned the place over, sign of a recent flood, will wait & see if it is found by anyone else before the next venture up that hill
You certainly earn your keep getting this cache. A bit of an achievement compared to a drive by cache. I enjoyed every minute of the climb though. TFTC
Replaced cache box with similar container. Replaced log book and took old one to be dried out.
The logbook is saturated. I found it today (27/5/12) and drained the container, but it needs a bit more of a formal dry out. The log is still salvagable if rescued soon.
Gibbons is a mad man for doing so much digging. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense today, but perhaps it made sense at the time. It’s an interesting piece of history though. Gibbons et al must have had an amazing knowledge of the surrounding woods and it would have been great to see it with all the massive kauri in place. I’ll return in a thousand years to check out the recovered forest.
The cache container had significant amounts of water in it and everything is saturated, including the log book. It is still salvageable though. I dried it out as best as I could, but the moisture from the book will remain until it is properly dried.

Found while on the way down nearby Whites Stream. It took a little while as GPS was a bit all over the show. TFTC
Found this on the way to canyon down Whites stream.
Impressive what they did 'back in the day' to get the timber out.

A bit of a hard slog on the way up to get this one! Nice sized cache though at GZ. Quick drinks stop before carrying on back along the Karamatura track. TFTC!
Mr Team Welsh spent the day out and about with Tufty picking up lots of caches on the way. First time out in this part of the Waitakere Ranges and a total of 16kms walked today. TFTC
A steady climb brought us to the cutting, we have known about this cutting for many years so knew we were in for a good climb. TFTC
On a long trek today in search of a few, as yet, undiscovered caches and thought we would add this one to the itinerary. It didn't take us too long to find this cache. TFTC
Out with some good mates, in the hunt for evilno9's 1000th, and this was on the way up! Up being the key word!! Was a good slog up the valley from the carpark to get to this point, and was a welcome break to be looking for the cache! After a bit of discussion as to which tree we were looking for, the cache was quickly in hand, signed all round, and then onto the next one! TFTC.
Out for a 20k hike with snakelion, mel_ramsay and eatorbeeaten in search of cache number 1000 for me. After a misfire on our first attempt back near sea level we were more confident of making a find up here. A very steep and sometimes slippery walk up the Karamatura but we made pretty good time and soon found ourselves in the right place to start looking. Got our trees wrong to begin with but soon figured it out and had the find in hand. Awesome spot and history here. TFTC
The team got up here and after a little search for the correct tree the find was made. It was an awesome walk up here. The rain throughout the week made the track more challenging which was even better

On a caching circuit in the area with Tufty and Rosmar. Last cache of the day, and after initially looking in the wrong area, found it easily when in the correct one. Cheers
Out and about with Tufty & Coldstream on a mission to find six caches in the area. Well done Tufty for recording the finer details of the trip, great fun was had by all even when the going was tough. This was the last of our planned cache visits for the day and a great place to stop and have a well earned rest before the long walk back to the carpark. We searched in the wrong area to start with but then realised our error and after that the cache was soon located. Thanks for sharing this great sopt T4TC.
