This is the second of these lookouts I've been to recently. A nice walk up from entry 5.

10-Mar-24
Nice walk up to fire lookout to prep 4 tramping, finished with this. All in all a good trip.

30-Dec-23
What a view! Been up here many times and not thought to turn on the app! A beautiful summer day with 360 views!

01-Dec-23
On Nov 7th I posted a DNF and commented that the next cacher passing might be willing to replace the cache as it was missing. As it happened the next cacher passing was me (again) so I replaced the cache and logged a find with permission of CO.Please retrieve the cache from the outside of the enclosure and return as found.Thank you Beltfamily for placing this cache.

07-Nov-23
To make the trip up worth my while I did some serious landscaping around the post but to no avail. I did bring spare logs but nothing to put it into, neither zip lock nor container so couldn't leave a replacement. Maybe the next cacher passing by?

04-Aug-23
Up here on a sunny day and had a good look around for this cash. Pretty sure I was in the right spot but sadly could not find it.

29-May-22
Still there for anyone that needs a 'little' exercise Wink

Finally made it to the top of the world by 1pm for a quick snag and tag. Cheers

OK so I need an Earth cache today so its a geo trip to Nelson in Toby today. Im also starting my hike up Mt Elbrus. And I walked up our own mountain today, venturing to the lookout on the top and back. The last kilometer was the hardest back along the road to Toby. Went down the wrong side of the creek and missed a few much needed caches but thats the break when I had no tracks on my gps to guide me. Then off for a bit of shoppping beforew heading back home. A great day and my first major walk for months. Did well but the body complained the next couple of days.

01-May-21
Forgot my pen, again!! A huffing puffing walk to get here, but well worth it. Tftc

06-Apr-19
Bit hard to find but Robbie from the lookout found it where stated. Small mint container watch for weka!

06-Apr-19
Site was overgrown by grass and cache buried but found it and cleared the area a bit

04-Aug-17
It seems to have been a busy few weeks with one thing and another, which has not allowed for much time for getting out for a good walk (and cache).

Working from home today I decided, quite early on, to treat myself to a few hours of exercise in the hills; our dog certainly wasn't going to say no.

Having regained my breathe from getting to Breath-taking Barnicoat, the last 500m here was a doddle. I was not going to pass this cache up today as it fills a DT grid slot.

There was no-one here looking out for anything much today, so my search was uninterrupted.

I spent a few minutes checking the wrong corner before getting my bearings and trying a far more obvious route to the right GZ where the cache was an instant spot.

Fat-fingers struggled to extract the log but all was good in the end. Wedged back with handy rock.

Down-hill all the way now.

Thanks

Finally spotted the cache a bit out of arms reach. Took another route to retrieve and dried everything out. Placed log in a plastic bag and rehid securely.

15-May-17
This geocacher reported that the cache might be missing.

14-May-17
Cache is not in the original spot where the GPS leaded me to
There looks to be a nice spot where it should be but there was no cache
home this one may like a cache check. Thanks

17-Mar-17
After a slog up from Easby Park it was certainly rewarding to reach the top. Great views over the forest and hills in one direction. No views over the Waimea plains or Tasman bay with thick fog everywhere. Thanks for the cache.

From our home in Greece we saw that this cache fulfilled a much needed D/T combination so it was on our short list of special caches to find in NZ. We headed up the hill today from a playground at the bottom of the hill. We knew the cache would be high up but we hadnt anticipated just how steep the paths would be.

We had just arrived at GZ when we heard a friendly voice call "what you two doing?" Rob the fire watcher introduced himself as did we. We looked for the cache but to no avail. Rob said hold on I'm coming down as I saw the cache about a month ago. We three tore over GZ with no success. Rob called his mate who works the alternative shift to him. ."Bugger!" Said Rob. "Wilson The weka got it!". You can imagine our disappointment after such a huge steep walk. Rob invited us into his tower and showed us his maps and fire watching equipment. It was really amazing and we spent over an hour chatting and looking at the magnificent views.

Rob filled our water bottles and offered us the use of his bench in the garden to eat our lunch. After we were sated we went through our bags to see what we had to replace the cache. We found a small tin of mints and some paper and replaced the cache on behalf of the cache owner. (We understand has moved away. )
We signed the new log and have notified the cache owner.

NB Rob showed us another trail accessed over the fence from his tower which was much easier than walk down the the steep path which we came up.

Nice walk up TFTC

20-Jul-16
Went on a big adventure with Wafflekitties and geo pups, had a blast thanks for the memories! Smile TFTC.

20-Jul-16
Found while on a winter holiday with LCBuilder and our two geodogs. We spent 3 weeks travelling down the east coast and then up the west coast, setting our tent up at a different campsite each night. We didn't have any real plan, just went where the caches took us Razz we saw a lot of awesome sights and will definitely have to come back one day as 3 weeks isn't really that long!
Finally made it to Sunny Nelson, definitely one of my favourite places.

This was one of our more memorable days, we spend the entire day up on these hills going from cache to cache. Beautiful day for it, we were all exhausted by the end (or even before the end), I don't think the dogs moved another muscle all night once we were home.. Smile

13-Jun-16
Nice walk up here fantastic views TFTC

25-Jan-16
Often walk up here if we want to blow some steam off. The tower is maned during the fire season and gives valuable information not only on conditions but also information to crews responding to fires. There is a new gentleman in the tower and he knows of the cache as they (he and the police) found it after the tower was broken into.

10-Jan-16
Found on a hike up the hill from Easeby Park, with my brother from Wellington, and our beloved's and Mr H, trusty accomplice.
Lovely to chat with Robby, the fire service warden manning the lookout. Was interested to see that he had a bowl of water out for any canines making the journey. He also offered us some H2O replenishment. TFTC

06-Nov-15
Final cache after the hike from Marsden Valley (2 hours 45 minutes inclusive of stops to find caches en route). I didn't realise the lookout is manned 24/7 until today. Quick find, signed the log, cache replaced safely and now for the hike back to Marsden Valley, aching limbs 'n' all...Thanks beltfamily!!

Unplanned find on a ride from Marsden Valley to Richmond.

13-Jun-15
#9685. Once we got out of the trees, we got blasted by the strong SW wind. Once we got to GZ the cache was a quick find, and we managed to shelter behind the fence while signing the log. A great viewpoint. TFTC.

13-Jun-15
We carried on up here after finding "Christmas Tree" and "Turn Again", though we had to hurdle a couple of fences not far from the look out. Once we got out of the tree cover, we felt the full force of the wind so I covered my ears while StreetWalker put on his jacket.
Fantastic views from here and no doubt even better from inside the lookout. The cache itself was an easy find, it's a systema container rather than the listed micro and it took far longer to re-hide than it did to find. Thanks for bringing me here and good to see the cache still going strong after several years. TFTC.

10-Apr-15
First time I've been up here. And I wasn't expecting to be here either- so this cache wasn't in my GPSr! However I recall reading about it when I was in town over Christmas, and that was enough to help me locate it today, along with a bit of methodical searching. No view today - in the cloud now. A few noises coming up from below which hints at some civilisation that I can't see.

#6 of this trip. TFTC.

15-Jan-15
We made it! Have to make it a favourite of ours as it was a bit of a struggle for us oldies. Now able to tick it off our bucket list. Thanks for the cache beltfamily.

01-Jan-15
In Richmond for a wee family holiday. Was planning on coming up here yesterday but heavy rain prevented that! Today dawned lovely, and our last day in Richmond before heading home to Christchurch, so we decided to leave Nana and grandand in charge of the wee dudes and head up the hill early. Decided on the steep direct route up! A number of caches found along the way. Lovely views. I remember a class trip up here in (then) Form 1 (Waimea Intermediate - '86?) - we walked up the Champion Rd entrance across the farm.....took a while I seem to remember?! Great views.
Now to find a way down Smile

21-Sep-14
had to walk quickly up the hill to GZ as three young chaps with their bikes were walking up the hill behind us. thankfully it was a very quick find and sign and head around the other side to have a quick chat the the young guys who were about to go down the hang ten track. cold wind and rain had started so we didn't hang around too long tftc

26-Aug-14

After crashing up the Reservoir Creek valley track (I use that term very loosely!) then on to here, it was great to walk straight to gz and find. Thanks for this nice reward. http://www.geocaching.com/images/icons/icon_smile_cool.gif

An awesome day helping StickmanNZ with some work at the look out. This is a beautiful spot, TFTC.

23-Aug-13
Wow and double wow!!!! Talk about being on top of the world!!!! We found the cache, signed the log and then went off on some other business further along the spur. Smile When we returned, we met the person who mans the lookout. He'd come up to install a repaired part for the anemometer. So we got to look inside and look out from inside and hear all about the operation of the lookout. Really made a fabulous day special. Thanks so much for placing this cache. Big Grin

10-Aug-13
Had a great walk up the hill and enjoyed the view North over Nelson.

10-Aug-13
A great walk up the hill despite some protestations from Mrs M, but we made it Smile. It was a beautiful day for this walk and the views from the top were just fantastic - even Mrs M agreed with that. So that's my 2nd 1 hour walk to achieve a cache find and next weekend it will be a walk into Speargrass Hut for my 3rd and final towards my MGSc. TFTC

Log wet so put a new sheet in from the lookout guy.
Put a zip lock bag on the log in the film canister as well to help keep it good. also dryed out the old log and put it back in the container.

Well worth the walk for a great view while working off those extra Christmas & new year kilos.

This morning was my Richmond Hill day. This was the 7th cache I have sought up here today. An early start had me here taking in the views at about 8.45am. The log was damp so I put it out in the sun to dry whilst I admired the view and had a chat with the fire watcher living in the look out. At 9am cloud drifted in from the North and I took my leave for the easy plunge back to the warmth of a Richmond coffee shop. Thanks for the cache.

06-Nov-11
Woohoo! Made it. I have often looked up at the hills and seen the lookout and thought that one day I will make it up there and find that cache. Well today was that day and it was great. The log was a bit damp so dried it out in the sun while we had a snack and rested our legs. I replaced the plastic bag with a snaplock to hopefully keep some of the moisture out. Number 4 of 8 for the day. TFTC.

This has been on the 'to do' list for ages but there was always a reason why this day didn't suit. A new cache on the way up tipped the balance and the forecast for a sunny morning for today was the clincher. Got to GZ to find the Lookout occupied. Had a chat to the person on duty - he will be there until the end of the weekend and will be back up there over Guy Fawkes. It was windy as well as sunny so an obvious day to need a Lookout. We can keep our GPS as we didn't need a hint - in fact spotted the cache from a few meters away so tucked it back more tightly wrapped. And it was away from the looker outer so no problem to collect. Thanks.

Nice One!!!!!!!!!!!! Just one of those great spots for a cache. Bit of an epic journey in order to record a find. Missed the first time because of the weed-wacker. After finding the cache had been replaced to its orginal position, an afternoon walk up from the top of Valhalla and the deed was done. Great view. Thanks

15-Mar-10
Have just got home from a bikeride up to the lookout. Had a good look around and found the cache in the long grass downhill of the GZ. Moved it back to its real home. Log a little bit damp but could still sign it. TFTC

15-Mar-10
Thanks for the lovely service ABCST!

10-Mar-10
I've had a report this may have been a victim of the weed whacker... so don't go up for this one especially until this has been confirmed/denied... unless you feel like a walk up anyway!

20-Sep-09
Good find while on a drive up this way.

13-Sep-09
A lot of huffing and puffing up to the top, as we think we took the extra long way up, but apart from the comment "You mean you dragged me all the way up here for a micro?!" it was well worth the trip for the panoramic views on a hot Spring day. Great spot and would probably never have ventured up this far if it weren't for your cache. TFTC.

20-Aug-09
quick find. one more up here then off home. tftc

18-Aug-09

"Strolled" along to this one after GCPFG5. Met the person in the tower and had a wee chat about the weather before logging. Another ridgeline cache out of the way Smile TFTC, Biggles.

Did this one after Valley View in the Gap. Walked along the forestry roads along the ridge, came around the corner and up - and there's a muggle in the lookout! Managed to sneak round the back and find and log the cache anyway before heading back down the hill. Came down through a lovely bushy gully (that I'm sure I've been through before). Last of three done on the hills today. Cheers Gav [3377

Sorry Peter cache needs maintenance, (on your bike)..........
narr just kidding picked a nice clear still morning for a wee walk 45min up and 35 min down some great views, lots of logging going on around the hills.
I left a mini geo coin in the cache to encourage other to make the trip its well worth it, so come on you guys & girls before its gets to hot!

Mr KE had to enlist the motivational assistance of his terrain 4+ walking buddy to claim this find. Texted him last night "How about a walk up the hill at 6am tomorrow?", expected to get a rather terse reply but instead received back a simple "Ok". Mr KE could do with geting out for a few more walks as getting up there was damn hard, but the view is worth it everytime. TFTC.

19-Oct-08
Wow. That's keen. Well done. (I think OK and NO are both as terse as the other)

The lookout is maned during the summer months. The last few seasons a bloke called Mike has been in residence there. He keeps a lookout over the 360 deg view and will often give those responding to fire calls very accrate nformation to help us access the fire. He works for Rural Fire Network.
