BOLD7 having a fab time in Adelaide and surrounds. Lots of laughs and some brilliant inventive caches.!thanks to all the COs collecting selected bikes today Answers sent for BOLD7 by TesmARF tftc
Continuing on with my South Australian caching tour and the mad collection of caches in the state. I am again part of the BOLD 7 team doing the mad assault on as many caches as we can. Today is going to be a mad long day as I am driving to Mt. Gamber and surrounds to chase some LGAs and some special caches. So glad to have finished off over the 300 of the Bike series, the ice cream cone art was fun, the anna tommy art was hot, the stayla challenges were cool. Now to move onto a different area of the state. OH the big Lobster is on the cards today. Love a Big Thing rings true today.First off today is the morning event. Was nice to see so many people turn up to the event. From there it was off on the drive.I am really loving the countryside of this state and the people are friendly while still watchful of you.We signed the caches as BOLD 7 and replaced them as we found them. Thanks for the hides and the great caches. Mum we will be late home.Answers were sent as a group email rather than lots of emails.
GC1W73G Mannum Granite QuarryA group of us are down from Darwin and Brisbane in preparation of the leap year event. Today we head from Mannum to Adelaide picking up various caches. To save space in the logs we have signed as BOLD7. Was meant to be BDLD7 but something got lost in translation. Was thinking this was a park and research but the road is closed due unstable banks. So it was a pleasant stroll to GZ. We stood and debated the width. Then one of the members pulled out a tape measure and went and measured it. Turned out it in the idle of what we were guessing. TFTC .Anja
The morning started early, vacating our accommodation on the outskirts of Mannum so a BOLD07 team member could host a b'fast event alongside the mighty Murray. With the event over and done with, took a ferry across the river to check out the dyke. Its a novelty to grab a ferry without paying so we made good use of this transport type. The occupants of other car in our convey were not happy we got prime spot with river views every time we crossed the Murray. I was not in that car and did not suffer with envy, jealously, always being second best, etc!!Back to the earth cache, its an interesting geological feature and with the shell / coral layer I could have spent the day looking around. Alas we were heading to Adelaide today and needed to get going, collecting caches as go. Thanks .Anja for highlighting the interesting dyke. Answers forwarded to .Anja on behalf of the BOLD07 experiment for consideration.
How very exciting the big trip has finally arrived! Down from Brisbane with a host of other geo friends with plans aplenty, enough to almost see us needing to extend or make a return visit. Our geonick for the trip is BOLD7 which is guaranteed to save the log paper for the 7 individual members of the team. As we make our way around sadly there wont be time for the usual individual logs and therefore just the old generic log will have to do. With little extra notes here and there if needed. Thank you for your cache which has added to my wonderful caching holiday. All challenges will be checked for qualifying at a future time.
In Mannum for the weekend for a little R&R.Today we headed out to clear as many as we could and sightsee the area. Okay..as we arrived at GZ, we questioned if that 'strip' was real or someone had painted it on. No..its real.. Quitre amazing! Answers sent to the CO. TFTC
Out and about exploring the Country Side at Mannum while the Trouble and Strive went to a Lady’s Luncheon at the Pub, short walk to GZ
This is yet another that we have forgotten to log for some reason. We both remember this well as the mosquitos did all they could from stopping us getting to where we needed to be. This was stunning. Such a great cache. A definite favourite for us. Thank you.
Even thought it has been ages since we visited this cache, it is hard to forget for the mosquitos and the stunning feature here. This is a definite favourite for me. Thanks for placing this cache to bring it to our attention.
I had to walk the last 260m due to the road being closed, but it was well worth it, loved the peaceful surroundings of the backwaters, and the history behind the quarry, another great cache, TYFTC
On the hunting trail again with SeasonedBird, Liz & Bruce. Blue sky day, so it’s a great day for caching. TFTC .Anja

Full time nomads since 2014. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.
Back in SA for harvest work. Spending a few days in Mannum. With the extreme weather of yesterday we werent sure we could access all of the caches that were our target for the day! We had no need to go on the main road but noted the detours in place and the ferry was surely busy!
A part of our day took in November of OTD series and it was possibly the hardest of the whole series that we have completed. Im sure the grey day and the constant drizzle did not help. But smilies all around on completion.

I can understand ChelseaLouise’s hesitation. The sign says “unsafe to enter”, but on the other hand, the sign is there for the Murray Coorong trail, and it looks like the road closure has been constructed to allow walkers through. So while I’m thinking about it, a guy in a ute unlocks the gate and goes through, and with the gate now left open, a truck goes through (at speed!) ten minutes later.
Having been in and out, I assume all the danger is some distance past GZ, and more so for vehicles. It’s an interesting earthcache. Do it!

Area not accessible due to dangerous bank erosion. Roads are closed off and there are keep out danger signs.
With my plans to fly to Brisbane for the the Easter Dayboro Mega event cancelled, I decided to head to the Riverland for a couple of days instead.

Sent required information to CO. The road may be closed but to get to the cache coords is perfectly safe walking or cycling access. Really great geological formation.
Owl and Eagle were on a riverboat cruise, which was going to make finding a cache on international geocaching day a tad tricky. However, the boat floated past this spot and some binoculars Owl had at the ready were quickly employed to get the required information. Eagle's fancy photography got the final element and there was much rejoicing. A different way to access the area, but a lot of fun.
Came along here, inspected the quarry, put finger in dyke... Hans Brinker would be proud !
An interesting and prominent earthcache, albeit a bit hidden as the road has been closed for many years now to all but locals.

While camping on the Murray River we did a tour today with ilook4geo. What a wild day!! The winds were gale force and there was rain as well, so we only managed to find a few caches when conditions eased a little. We walked the 250 metres from the gate where the road is closed, made observations for this cache and then raced back to the shelter of the vehicle. Thanks go to Anja and Marty for creating this earth cache.
The very strong wind blew us along here today with goingplaces2. It as raining as well. Found some caches but not very many. It was the best possible in the conditions. Looked here and did some measurements to answer the question. TFTEC.
Having been nearby for the long weekend, I was making my way home slowly grabbing a few caches along the way.

It's my third day in Australia! Monday micaparamedic picked me up at the airport and the adventure began. We tossed my things into his vehicle and began the journey to Uluru, because walking around that "rock" was on my bucket list.
Along the way we stopped for special caches (particularly earthcaches) at locations that would teach me about this huge country and some of its geology. Some concepts and hides were familiar to me; however, most were things I had never seen or even known about. I was constantly trying to wrap my head around new things - not just the geology, but also other things like birds, animals and trees. (and getting in on the correct passenger side of the car)
We took the ferry across Murray River, and then found a spot where we could park and walk to the site of this earthcache. I've seen dolerite dykes before, but not as large and extensive as this one.
I'm glad we took this walk and were able to examine all the things mentioned in the cache write-up.
Thanks for the great write-up about this interesting geological spot.

Wow that dyke really stands out!
I visited this earthcache on my way home from work (traveling from Murray Bridge to Berri).
Its great to see so much water in the Murray River - all the wetland areas are full of life.
Thanks for the Earthcache.

Had a nice walk to the quarry, but on the way disturbed a couple of local dogs who barked the whole time I was walking past.
Was very interesting looking at the wall and the black dyke and the way it "came down" the rock face.
Have emailed the answer and photo to the CO.

Staying in the Mannum area and headed across the river for the short trip to the quarry. After parking the geomobile it was a nice early morning stroll to GZ where the impressive dyke was an outstanding feature.
I soon gathered the required information and spent some time exploring the rest of the old quarry.
Thanks for an interesting EC and I've given it a favourite point.

Today we are taking the boat out for earthlight to find some river caches and each time we pass here we avoid it as the road is closed, today we bit the bullet and parked at the corner and hoped no one would help them selves to anything in the boat, we put on the fly nets and off we went for a nice walk along the broken road, the 2 dogs not to far in were taken by surprise and let us know they were there by constantly barking at us lol, we soon arrived at the spot and after doing Da Ledg...end we tackle this one, what a lovely spot to be bought to and very interesting features here, answers submitted and we finally have this one of our to do list. Having read the logs we worked out the best place to park and then walk in to GZ.

Last morning in Mannum, what a lovely place to stay! Heading out to finish the Fruit Loops series I started yesterday afternoon. I kind of bailed on this cache yesterday, the signs etc heading into GZ and all. After reading some logs last night, I realised I could get to GZ pretty easily without dying a horrible death. What a cool place this is! Thanks for the earthcache, Anja, answers sent.

**this is a late log** I have recently made a major upgrade to my GSAK license and found this lovely feature that automatically tells me what caches I have marked found in GSAK but never logged on geocaching.com!! Yay, Clyde, you can have my money anytime! The caches I am logging in this batch were ones I did with Froghoppin and Mattycat in and around rehearsals for a Follies show we did together. I have a great deal of trouble with solving puzzles and these two fellas have a very little trouble with them. I'm very good at finding them so it was a match made in heaven! Thanks for making me scratch my head and then taking me all around the western and northeastern sides of Adelaide for a little fun and laughter with my friends.
We really enjoyed visiting this site and learning more about it. The information given and photos were excellent. Thank you. I've emailed our answer to the question but posted our photo here. This was one of our last caches for the day on a lovely Autumn afternoon. We started badly with a couple of DNFs but ended on a high note with this one.
A lovely day out at the steamed up festival. We involved the kids in collecting the answers and considering their ages they did well. Email sent from Mark on behalf of us both. Thanks for bringing us here, great exploring the history of this region. Thanks to you both from PG06
First came here nearly 2 years ago and received an important phonecall as I pulled up to the gate which called me away from the cache here, without finding it!
We were in Mannum today for the Steamed Up weekend so we headed over here for the short walk and to do some exploring.
A very interesting place indeed. The geokids had a great time learning about the geological features and supplying their guess as to the answer.

We visited the quarry with our geodaughter KAROPI while we have been staying in Murray Bridge.
KAROPI had just had a nasty fall while looking for a nearby cache so Mr sylken kindly estimated the size of the dolerite dyke for us while we cleaned and bandaged KAROPI's hand.
I then took a quick photo of him and that amazing black line of rock.
Many thanks for bringing us here Anja and Marty [^]

Furrangel and I decided another road trip was in order so we headed out toward Mannum in search of some things to photograph.
We added a few caches to break up the drive. Was a wonderful day the sun was out and there was little to no wind. Plenty of wild life including sheep, cows, parrots, and even a Kite(Eagle).
Wonderful walk from the car as we parked it up stream by the closed gate and walked in, perfect day for it... as we were in the area for the Nearby cache we couldn't say no to doing this one as well...
We have logged with Permission from cache owner,

We attempted this one a few years back but were put off by the road being closed. Today we knew we could drive to under 300mts from previous logs. Once at the gates it was a pleasant walk to GZ, and this would have to be on of the best specimen of a dyke we have seen and also the most picturesque.
We collected the information and took some photos.
Many thanks Anja and Marty for a great way to learn a bit more about Earth Sciences and the very quick permission to log.

Camped at Murray Bridge showgrounds, on our 2nd trip around Australia.
Took a drive to Mannum, to pick up some caches in the area.
We came across the river to do this cache, and found the road closed.
As it was quite safe, we walked to the quarry with no problems.
This area would make a great picnic spot, to bring the family.

We didn't this Earthcache as a detour from doing the Oz Mega series. And a good break it was, as the series was starting to get a little monotonous!
We made our way to GZ, the road closure not posing much of a problem as it was only 200m from GZ. The rain was starting to spit so we hastened our way to GZ. Wow that is one impressive dyke! I honestly didn't expect to see something so distinct! [^]

Cache found at 10:39:00 AM on Day 2 of the Murray Bridge Oz Mega event, while tackling the OZ Mega Series and the Signal Series with Gunnie69 and Kaisho53. This was find 99 of 270 for the day.

As we neared the parking spot, the cloud was looking ominous but there were no drops of rain, so we braved it in the clothes we had on... Oops..
Wegot to GZ and the rain appeared. A quick measure up, some very quick photos and an even quicker dash back to the car before we had to do the rest of the PT in drenched jeans...
A nice spot to visit, thanks for bringing us out this way Anja and Martin. I have a pic of us at GZ, but it shows the band of rock that needed to be measured so won't post it...
Ghostgums forwarded the answer on our behalf and has the tick to log so all good.

South Australian OZ Mega 2014 in Murray Bridge. A Twelve day trip to and from the mega. Plenty of caching along the way and near Murray bridge. A great time with lots of cachers all over the place to make for a very entertaining period.
I joined up with Sol de Lune for the lead up to the Mega and the mega itself. Mega Day 1, which was a drive from the Barossa Valley to Murray Bridge via Mannum. Drizzly day but we decided this needed to be conquered.
Many thanks goes out to the CO for the lesson.
Can confirm that this Earthcache can be accessed from the North or South. GeoWife and I walked the 500 metres from the northern end without any issues.
The road is closed just south of the quarry, unsure how far one could drive up from the south safely. Road closed signs exist just off of Hunter Road.

Tried to do these two today "Da Ledg...end" & "Mannum Granite Quarry" the road is blocked from both ends. Does anyone know if it is actally safe enough to walk in from either the north or south to do these caches? I see the road has been blocked for a few years, concerned that with the recent rains it could have created further issues. Any info would be helpful.
As per my last note, the road can be walked down, and the cache area is still publicly accessible. The road has been closed for a couple of years now, and has not caused any issue with access to GZ, apart from not being able to drive right up to GZ.
Cache is perfectly accessible. The road has been closed for a couple of years, and this has not stopped anyone else from getting to GZ, so no need to disable.
All that is required is a walk in from either end.

we really wanted to do this cache but the road was blocked from subsidence and the fence was right across, so we took it they really meant no entry
this cache needs to be disabled for the meantime until the road is once again opened

Another great day of caching with Aussie M&M. I surprisingly got a leave pass for the caching widow and was able to tag along. For those that know us we managed the trifector, one fell over, one drew blood and one split the daks. The Ms were after a few previous DNFs and to fill in those out of the way caches. Great day, great company and some really good caches. Left 3 trackables, grabbed 2 and left about 4 of my pathtags out in the wild.
What a spectular place. had to walk in due to the road being closed due to the riverbank collapses. Answer on the way and here is the piccy. Thanks for the cache Anja.

Couple of days spent in Mannum having a rest, well not so much a rest as caching took up a lot of the day. Trip to Quarry was great, looking and climbing around.

The road is still blocked but the quarry is easy to get to from either south or north. I preferred north as south was local traffic only to the block. After a short walk the quarry was reached. Interesting land features exposed by quarrying. Also found the cache close by, which involved a higher view of the area. Thanks Anja for the interesting information and pleasant walk along the river.
My geohusband was nervous about going there because of the closure road. I had to beg him to come with me. It was worth it in the end. What an unusual quarry.
Thanks Anja and Marty for Earcthcache.

The road within 170m of cache is closed, locked and baracaded. Maybe they don't really really want anyone to go past that point.
Tentative 'found' pending confirmation of photo from hider - this is a reminder 'found' so that I won't forget to send the info!
There is nothing like a long dark streak in a rock. You don't even have to be a rock licker to appreciate the dyke. It's obvious. I was here with the Frog and the Winterdragon. They jived me about posting certain pictures but I have morals. Instead, I was more interested in the xenoliths. Now they are something. I've seen some nice ones at Granite Island and Hindmarsh Valley and even down at Hallett Cove, but these a sure nice specimens. However, don't drive on the closed nearby road. You could become an Earth Cache yourself. Don't.
Clear skies.

Te road seems to be in good condition from the top, but I guess it's what's underneath that counts. It was an easy stroll in from the car park, and at least the rain had stopped falling on us. Astro seems to know a lot about dykes, I guess it's because he's well travelled. Anyway, because the units hadn't been specified for the measurement, we invented some of our own, and have sent the answer to Anja. Hopefully she'll be able to do the conversion from forks to cm. Astro's log has the photographic proof.
Thanks for a great earthcache Anja & Marty!

Great cache. We parked the car at the northern road closure and walked to the quarry along the road (several hundred meters). It was good to see the geology of the rock face as well as the fossils. TFTC
Found it!
Although the road is closed to the general public due to rock falls,
we would suggest some caution to the area.
Thanks for the Earthcache Anja

Our first cache of the day and we walked in from the north - so good to see the river back to its normal level along here [^] [^].
Also good to revisit this area again and look more closely at the rock formations at GZ, even though all the rain had made access to the site a little more difficult than usual .
Thanks for the geology lesson Anja & Marty.

Interesting quarry.Found while cruising up the Murray in a house boat with friends.Plenty of water in the river at the moment.
We were able to moor within metres of the quarry.
TBs & coin visit
Cheers Anja
Found with Bronsen and Michelle on a days caching along the river! Access is still possible over the rocks near the bottom of Bakers Hill Road (a walk of about 400m.) Thanks for an interesting cache!!!!!
Found with CPwanderer and Mooshell on another enjoyable day out caching. Another interesting area to be taken to by caching. Thank you for the earth cache. Mooshell will log photo of the 2 of us.
Found with CPwanderer and Bronsen on a caching trip. Thanks for taking me to an interesting place. TFTC
We did want to attempt this one today but with the road closed from either end, we figured we would venture back another day.
With a tick in the box from owner we are able to log this one,
Came for a ride with Firesafe and boy are we glade we came to see this one so interesting

We enjoyed our 500m walk to the quarry. Despite much jumping on the road, Mr m and the kids could not make the riverbank collapse (How irresponsible) Is this just another government scare tactic? We appreciated the information about the quarry. These places are always of interest to us as our eldest son is a stonemason. Thanks for bringing us here.
After talking with the last people to visit the site, it would seem that there is still access, but the walk is ~300m rather than a drive by, so will re-enable, and add some information to the cache description about where to park.
Given that the road is closed, it makes it hard to access the site, and according to this article http://www.murrayvalleystandard.com.au/news/local/news/general/no-through-road/1803668.aspx there is a bit of a mystery as to how long it will be closed for.
Shall disable for now, and try and contact the council to find out if it will reopen or not.
Could this be the first earth cache to be archived? Who would have thought that after thousands of years it would suddenly be unsafe to enter.

Wow... disappointed that this one has been disabled. We found that the closure of the road probably made it better. If you come in from Baker's Hut Rd there is plenty of room to park, and it is only about a 300m walk along the closed road. Walking along the road we had time to admire the surrounds and enjoy the quiet river. I imagine it would have been quite a different experience if we had just driven straight to the Earthcache. Please consider opening this one up again. It is not closed to pedestrian traffic.

We tried to do this cache today only to find both roads closed with signs saying closed due to Land Slips, hopefully we can get there next time through
This site is a little more difficult to get to these days. The road has been closed due to the fear of landslides. You can still hike in from the Younghusband side. In a way it probably makes it better as there will be less muggles. Thanks for the cache. Fantastic spot and highly recommended.
So it’s THIS quarry! When I read the logs of others that mentioned that they had been here before, and I racked my brain trying to remember which one it was. It wasn’t until we pulled up at the site that the light came on . Didn’t need to scramble quite so high today.
Took the required measurement using the scale engraved on the back of my Leatherman and came up with an answer that would have to be pretty close to the average [^]. Auzee took a snap of me standing along side a dyke . Cheers Marty and Anja – caching with learning [^]. I’m now smarter than I was this morning, but since I’ve now forgotten it all, I guess I’m back where I started . Thanks for trying, anyhow .

Found this one whilst attempting the other! We are forwarding our findings to the owner to verify our claim.
Brilliant earthcache location. Very impressive. I had a useful measuring tool with me that is wonderfully accurate. The dyke seems to be afraid of foreign rocks. Or their contents!
