A busy summer has seen lots of muggles who have removed some of our caches. I've had to disable the island's geocache due to the time to replace contents. Unlikely to be reactivated before the island shuts on the 18th Feb. Will be up and running when the island reopens end of the year.
DadandtheKids with Mum are having a holiday in Wellington. Today we drove to Wellington to Queens wharf to get a ferry to Somes Island. Are the lively ferry trip we had out briefing by Doc and found cache 0, Cache 1, Cache 2 ok. At Cache3 we found the location where it should have been BUT no cache. Searching the logs we found that the cache was missing. We were running out of time to solve it any other way so we abandoned it.
Trouve ! / Found it ! Merci Department of Conservation pour la cache A multi completed thanks to the help of a previous finder because WP3 is missing and my ability to understand English did not allow me to find the missing clue. But the finale will nevertheless be found. A little check for WP3 is to be done because I am not the first to report its absence. Thank you for this beautiful GC on this beautiful island 4505th cache found.Thank you Department of Conservation for the cache
A great day out at Somes Island with Arandee. We did this cache and the 2 adlabs. WP3 is missing at Vince's seat, the container is there but empty. We were lucky to see a tuatara on the track and it scurried into its burrow then came out a metre away. Lots of skinks about too. Thanks for creating this multi, Department of Conservation. It was a walk of discovery. #10053
Found with some help with missing sections from Jude_E. A good wander around on a nice day. TFTC
Nice island to have a stroll around and this takes you to the main places. Couldn't actually find the Vinny one at the visitors centre, found a container but only contained a plaster. Clues were enough to point us to the next spot and carry on though
Fun way of exploring the island and getting to know the history. Thanks for a great adventure!
#654 Walked every trail on the island. Did the adlabs and solved the clues for this multi along the way. The cache at seat with Vincent was missing the puzzle but we were able to work out the location of the next cache nevertheless. Lovely way to spend a sunny day.
Sections of the island's track are closed off due to exceptionally slippery/muddy conditions, which has cut off access to the last cache. We will update this log once track reopens. Any questions about the geocache contact [email protected]
Excellent adventure around the island, TFTC!!!!South Australia is the place be for GCA1DNA - MEGA - February 29th, 2024 in Adelaide! Hope to see you at The Great Leap Forward!
Got the early ferry across to give us time to wander around the island completing this multi-cache and two AdLabs before attending today's event.
We were a bit confused finding a logbook in each waypoint and then had no end of trouble reading the instructions at waypoint 5. We removed the intermediary logs from each waypoint as there should only be one logbook for each one geocache.
The second problem suggested there was one more cache to find - the actual final. Fellow catchers offered further advice informing us of another solution. So we signed the fresh replacement log and had lunch. The previously mentioned fellow cachers then arrived and showed us the errors of our ways. Hauling out one of the existing logbooks we resigned, this time as "Degree of Mystery event participants 20/08/2023", rather than individually.
Other than that all good. Even the weather played ball, improving throughout the day.
Thanks for the opportunity

Luckily the weather improved and I was able to get around and find this/these caches while on the island for the Degree of Mystery Event. Tftc
A wander around Matiu/Somes Island today before the Degrees of Mastery event. Luckily we had the event host who was also a previous finder of this one so he was able to help us out with the various waypoints (especially with the first one where we hadn't asked the volunteer who processed us inbound about it so we wouldn't really know where it was). We noted that a group that had passed through earlier today cleaned up the various logs as there should only be a logbook at the final, so we didn't sign anything along the way. At cache six we couldn't find the container at the obvious spot, but I spied it on the other side of the track - looked like it got inundated and shifted over. Contents were still good. Eventually the proper final was tracked down and signed as a group.
A great reason to visit, but also for me it means I:
* have completed the Wheel of Challenges Hard level
* qualify for the Masters of Geocaching Science Challenge Cache
* have knocked off one more degree on my 360 degree around home (the event knocks off another).
All good here, and TFTC+FP

Joined in with trying to solve the multi and glad that common sense and insider knowledge got us all there in the end. TFTC
The various wps were ticked off as we meandered our way around the island, and with some guidance at the final we were finally able to put our names on the log.
Thanks for setting this up
Thanks for setting this up
Good walk around Somes Island to find this multi with other cachers before the event. Thanks for this multi cache.
This was a very fascinating experience. Firstly, the trail took us to interesting sites (my first visit to the island) and each part of the multi contained information about subjects I had little or no knowledge of.
When the volunteer became aware we were geocachers, he mentioned the information in the whare, so I returned and took photos. In the meantime, the rest of the group had moved along and when I caught up they had already found the first container. I thought to myself that the information I had wasn't needed as we were already on track and I promptly forgot about it.
The set up of the multi was quite different from any I had seen before and, along the rest of the group I was with, was expecting to end up at a final cache where there would be a logbook to sign. However, we encountered logbooks in each container. Eventually, we ended up finding a container that was quite different to the others that included a laminated card that could not be fully read. However, with a couple of digits being given, another two for which I could make out the question and being able to reduce answer options through logic for the remaining two, we were able to come up with a low number of possible options for the next (presumably final stage). Some others in the group believed this was the final but, since there was another clue card, I wasn't convinced of this.
Aware that another group (here for the same event) wasn't far behind, I returned soon after to share the information I had to help them. However, they had already arrived and had found a different cache container, thanks to a previous finder being with them. It had the same appearance as the earlier containers but was not at the coordinates determined by the card at the previous site.
While having lunch, it was decided to put a note in one of the containers (a glass jar) with coordinates to direct finders to the proper one.
I was still partly convinced that there had to be another stage so I tested one of the other coordinate options which wasn't far from our event site but that turned out to be further off a track than I had earlier thought. Phronimos had worked out some coordinates he was keen on so we could check those out later. I then remembered about the information I had photographed and used that to see what coordinates they produced. Although the questions were different from those on the card that we had located earlier that was not fully readable, the coordinates matched those that Phronimos liked. We later discovered that they were for the site that we started at so it was like the information on the clue cards provided coordinates that created a complete loop.
When I returned home, I looked at the previous logs to see if I could understand the history of this cache. I now know that rather than there being five stages leading to a final, there are six "caches" that form a loop that can be started at any place. The problem I see with that is that some cachers have claimed a find even if they have only found one container. Conversely, others have not felt they could make such a claim as they had not found all six.
I was also keen to understand how and when the glass container came into play but nothing in the logs helped me to do this.
I think the only thing wrong with this cache is that the plastic container at location six is in the wrong place. If that was moved to replace the glass container, I think everything will be fine for future searchers.
A memorable experience. It's a favourite point from me.

(# 8042) Came to island primarily for an event today but as I was here wanted to get this cache. Did this with a group of other cachers. Got the required information at each waypoint without difficulty. It was a nice walk around the island though a little bit windy. Found the final and duly signed the log..
Thanks for bringing me here.

This one was a mission. We walked all around and found all the waypoints while also cleaning up DOCs geotrash. TFTC
Found with degree of mastery team before attending the event. Thanks for the cache.

Thanks for the wander around somes island. Came over with Geeves90 to do these series of caches. Not sure what we were expecting but soon discovered at the first one we were looking at caches for every point. We found them all but the laminated paper at 6 is unreadable
A quick trip over while the half price ferries were still happening.
I was looking for a coordinate at each point to start with, instead I found a cache box so after that we knew we were looking for easily found cache boxes.
We assume there are only 6 as the Cache 6 was unreadable.

Was needing an outting to keep my nephew occupied - the sea was flat and the day sunny. It also meant all my MGSc challenge requirements would be completed, yhey (GC2J6AY visit an island).
Debarking from the Days Bay ferry we got chatting to the friendly DOC ranger, he kindly took us up the hill in his golf cart so I could start where I left off from last visit - thank you, my knees are forever grateful!
No trouble finding the two remaining caches. As it would happen three tourists who we kept bumping into accidentally spotted the final cache lying unconcealed, I watched as one picked it up. Luckily he knew about geocaching and I thanked him for finding it for me, lol.
Signed the damp log, then tucked cache away covering with a bit of natural camo (NB: lid missing). There was also a water damaged laminated sheet in the cache - wasn't able to read its contents so its purpose remains a mystery. DOC will check this out.
This was a really fun multi that drew me to the island for my first visit/s, i'll be back! A fav from me. Thx DOC

Not claiming this as a find, as we stumbled across the 6th cache just before catching the ferry. We will be back sometime in the future to do the complete circuit.
Awesome place to visit, will bring a picnic and spend longer next time.

Down in Wellington for our annual holiday....in all the years with the kids we have never made it to Somes Island, until today. An excellent excursion to discover some local history - the caches are a great way to find out about the stories behind the island. The kids loved solving the clues and all caches were easy to find. The last cache's laminated clue card is soaked through and hard to decipher - but with a little googling and the interpretation board the digits got us close enough to complete the loop.

Had a great time finding this with my Brownie unit, always a quick find with a group of curious kids!
Well, what an adventurous day HS and I had on Mātiu/Soames Island. The day was glorious. We left home early in the morning and caught the train from Waikanae. We had time before and after to find caches around the wharf/railway station. All instructions were clear and the caches themselves were large. We couldn't get close enough to number 4 - a very large gull was protecting her nest. I tried to approach gz from another angle. The gull was not amused and flew into the air, squawking loudly. I thought, good, its gone. But no, the next minute it was dive bombing me. OK. Time to abort this mission. We were disappointed, thinking that we would be unable to complete the multi. However, we took not of the hint for number 5, and when we got to the sites of interest, we looked around for the hint. It paid off, we saw the cache and was able to sign off this multi. Thank you for the informative dialogues about the history of the Island. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Tēnā koutou ki te iwi kāinga ara ko Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika a Māui, otirā ngā hapū katoa. I struggled at the first point but it's easier when you follow the cache instructions! My favorite part was the WRNS stories but it was all good. We got the 1000 am ferry from Days bay with a planned return of 1540. We didn't linger over lunch or take that many fotos, and, because it wasn't crowded, we were able to get the 1340 instead. It was challenging for some of us to do this multi plus 2 Ad Labs at the same time but we came away with a good result! Thanks DOC.
At the last minute, i.e the night before, changed our plans and decided that since the weather was fine we should do our trip to Sommes Island now rather than our planned date in march . so we set off not long after 7.00am and drove to Waikanae parked car there, and there was a train just waiting for us it seemed, so we hurriedly grabbed our gear and got on the train -a good choice - got into Wgtn and time for a couple of caches around the station before heading up to 11.15 Ferry . We had a good sailing in the sun with little wind and landed on the Island . Our first place to visit was the Labs at the Talking women and we continued on from there collecting each of the two lab waypoints and info FOR THIS MULTI CACHE. We met serious trouble at one of the waypoint and D was dived bombed by the nesting black backed seagull and we were unable to get the necessary info but we travelled on to the lab waypoints hoping that -like the others, - we might locate the cache with the info at one of these points of interest and lucky for us we did just that and so we could complete the multi here on the island i took photos as we walked around which i will post later
Thank you for this cache .
Thank you for this cache .
That was a bit of work! We managed to sign all 6 log books after making the finds. A fun and intersting place to get to and wander aound. A fav point from me. Thanks for placing your cache.
Ms_KR and I are off for a wee break "up north" and today we took a ferry from Days Bay to Matui/Somes Island for a bit of a wander. It was a lovely day and had a great time. When we got back to the mainland we cruied around some unfound caches in Lower Hutt/Petone. It was a cloudy but warm day.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. .

A great day out with Lumin, Flowerydaze and RogerW1nz on a lovely day to visit the island. Quite a different way to set out a multi but fun to solve each stage (mostly Lumin who had the fastest fingers). Great to see the wildlife which was abundant thanks to the lack of predators on the island, skinks, kakariki and a Tuatara disappearing down a road drain. The final was missing its lid but as every good cacher should carry some spares with them, RogerW1nz had the goods to make the repairs. Thanks DoC for placing this cache here.
On 15/7/2020 I came to Matiu/Somes Island with some family members for a visit & to do this Multi.
For various reasons, I claimed it as a find despite not finding all 6 waypoint caches. Today I returned with lumin298, Flowerydaze & Talla64 to do the 2 AdLabs, and rectify this unfinished Multi.
Despite some oddly wrong coordinates at WP1, we (well mostly lumin298) managed to find all the hides. The last one is missing a lid & has a very wet logbook, so I inserted a new container & log inside the old container. So I can say I finally finished it.

Out on an island adventure with Talla64, RogerW1nz and lumin298. We came over with two things in mind, to complete the two Adventure Labs that have been set on the island, and to find this multi. Fortunately the Ranger told us what to look for at WP1, and pointed us in the right direction, or I doubt we'd have found it. We were also pleased to discover that the answer to one of the waypoints for the Adventure Lab was on the same spot.
lumin298 did a great job of working out the co-ords for each stage, and we signed all the logs. As the container at the final was missing its lid and the log book was soaked, RogerW1nz provided a new container and replacement log book from his caching bag and placed these inside the old container.
Thanks so much Department of Conservation for setting up this multi; it took us to some interesting spots and we learnt some fascinating history.

Out here with Flowerydaze, Talla64, and RogerW1nz to explore Mātiu and complete this multi as well as the two Adventure Labs on the island. We took the ferry over in the morning and had a leisurely walk around with fantastic weather and a few sightings of the native wildlife
This was an interesting multi, kind of like finding 6 distinct caches but only getting credit for the final. I liked the little puzzles at each stage though. The coords for WP1 were well out so we had to ask the DOC ranger who pointed us right. All the other stages were easy finds and the only issue was a seagull protecting their nest at WP5, but thankfully we didn't have to spend too long there or disturb the egg. The final is missing a lid and the logs were soggy so we added a new dry log in a pill bottle to protect it, inside the existing container.
Thanks DOC for looking after this island so we can all enjoy it, and for setting up this trail to incentivize geocachers to visit!

LAST CACHE OF THE YEAR! And what a way to go out! A wonderful experience. Like one of the previous searchers I was dive bombed by gulls which made retrieving cache #5 impossible. But by reading previous logs and looking for the hint object we were able to complete! Well done to DOC, a massive TFTC!
I needed to find a cache on and island for the MGSc Challenge (https://coord.info/GC2J6AY) in Nelson. So this morning I drove from the Wairarapa to catch the ferry to here. This time I walked in the opposite direction to my visit in June, and walked along a track for the first time. Always good to visit here -I spotted 4 kakariki this time - so colourful. Great information on the sheets in each waypoint’s container.
Favourite given for another good visit.
Kia ora rawa atu for the cache MatiuSomes.

Great day out with Team DPS. Second go for me, coords worked much better than my first try. Great to have D and S along for the trip, they came up with some good insights. Got dive bombed by nesting seagulls near the gun emplacements (no nests in sight) and saw some wetas in their hotel. The one at the tall thing needs a new container, the log is wet. Gets an FP from me.
Found first one but navigate didn’t help as it only got is to the start of the trail.
Many thanks DoC Grand day out indeed! Muddled our way through the adventure caches and did this one as well.
Good activity for kids birthday party. Thanks Doc, nice way to explore the island.
We had been trying to get to Mātiu for some time, but weather and water woes on the island delayed us and delayed us. But today the weather forcast is good (although frosty at the start), the ferry is running and the water woes are woeless, so the Wellington Puzzlers Group headed out. Well, half of us anyway. A rather full boat today - lots of people visiting the island, some just crossing over to the other side. After a rather excellent briefing by the local DoC warden we set off. All the way points were nice and easy to find and the requirement to collect information to get to the next coordinates was a very nice touch. All the caches were in good nick, and a decent size, and nice and dry, as well as this being an awesome place - that's a definite favourite from me. And I was inpressed at how they managed to ship deer in *that* crate!
Anyway loved the walk, easily worth the cost of coming over - something I have been wanting to do for many, many years.
While sitting at the wharf enjoying the sun and waiting for the boat to collect us, the puzzlers group got to work on a few puzzles. Not much we could do there without all our tools, but we made some progress on a couple.
Many thanks for bringing us here, DoC, loved it.
But I do recommend removing the logbooks from the intermediate caches - that just causes confusion. Only the last one should have a log book in it.
After getting back into Wellington we wandered towards Oriental Parade collecting a couple more caches and on the way back to the train collected the numbers for the shoreline multi. On the train home even the ticket punch was island-shaped!
Today's team are me, TwigNZ, Itchyfeet2020, TrinityNZ & LL113. What an amazing bunch of people. I am really loving these outings, more than the puzzle solving sessions!

"Five go mad on Somes", could be a Enid Blyton-esque paraphrase of today's adventures. This has been a trip I have wanted to do for many many years, and more specifically I've been trying to do for the last few weeks ever since a group of us have banded together initially just to try to help each other with some puzzle solving, but now has morphed into something delightfully social.
So it was today that TrinityNZ, LL113, Itchyfeet2020, the Seagnoid and I could finally get across to visit Somes after having previous planned trips cancelled by bad weather or lack of services running. And this day did not disappoint! A stunningly calm start to our day, if just a little chilly first thing this morning. But there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the harbour was about as flat as we could want it to be, which made for an easy crossing from Queen's Wharf.
Once on the island, we were warmly welcomed by the local Ranger, who kindly pointed us in the right direction for the first waypoint. This actually took us a lot longer to sort out. Not because of this waypoint, which was found quickly, but more trying to sort out answers for the AdLabs that were here. But in truth all the waypoints were easy to find and in great condition thanks to the recent maintenance. The only really confusing bit was why each waypoint had individual logbooks in them? Only the last one should have one. We were pleased to be able to add our names to that one
Thank you for making this day out really enjoyable. Definitely deserving of a FP here.

Thanks DOC. This was great fun. A team of us came over today on a beautiful day to complete this and the AL's. Boy have we got a stunning day for wandering around. Following our awesome spiel from the ranger he also had time to point out the right track to start this multi. What followed was a great casual wander around the island juggling the next calculated stage of this multi along with the ALs. This has just been maintained so no problem at any of the sites. We were confused by the log books at each stage but a awesome multi worthy of a fav for location and fun and the brilliant day we had. TFTC DOC.
Great day out on Somes Island with ItchyFeet, LL113, TwigNZ and The Seagnoid. Lots of team work, fun and some puzzle solving. Signed most of the logs except the first one as we weren’t sure if we should be signing them all? But then decided we would for subsequent finds. Thanks for this enjoyable multi.
Since I was a little girl I have wanted to set foot on Somes Island. It has always had a sense of mystery being out there in the harbour.
Today I joined with my fellow Puzzlers (TwigNZ, the Seagnoid, TrinityNZ and ItchyFeet2000) for another Twig’s Tours adventure that we had been waiting for for some time. The conditions couldn’t have been better - the sun was shining bright, and the water was super calm, which is great for those who have no sea legs (ME)!
The day was spent wandering the island collecting information, waypoints, and completing the 2 Adventure Labs. We also caught up with the friendly locals - some very vocal sheep and the cheeky swooping fantails. There was an assortment of puzzle solving towards the end of the day which started with trying to figure out what the correct time for the next ferry was…
A great trip with great people! What’s next for Twig’s Tours?!
Thank you DOC for placing and maintaining the caches. It was a great learning experience.

First geocache has been moved and hint updated, as the picnic table it was hiding under has been removed for maintenance. Apologies for those trying to find it without the clue.
WP 4 is in the process of being replaced. Contact the island ranger if this log is still up when you are on the hunt!
WP 3 was made to look different/official due to muggles continuously getting into the cache and scattering its contents across the ground
Thank you YetiNZ for notifying us!

Amazing. My first visit to the island has been a great adventure. After logging a DNF for this cache earlier in the day (so that I could move on) and after completing the two Adventure Labs on the island, my circumstances changed to give me more time than I thought I would have. So, having already done two laps of the island I thought I'd have a go at creative interpretation of the hints. And it paid off. I still never found WP1, or anything that even remotely seemed to match the hint or a cache. However, I did find, in this order:
WP3 - From the hint alone. Worth pointing out that the container here is a little different than the rest, and almost looks too 'official' to mess with.
WP2 - From the hint alone (and the past logs).
WP4 - I didn't understand the hint here, and the container is damaged and not even remotely waterproof.
WP5 - All good here, exactly as described.
WP6 - A popular area so had to wait for the people to clear out, and the final cache was found, all good and exactly as described (although a little exposed, so I re covered with leaves).
Success - Which is consistent with how my personal "curse of the multis" process works: Look, fail, look, fail, look, fail, log a DNF, look, find. It's a story as old as time...

I've been meaning to come out to this island in (literally) forever, but somehow just never had the time. Now, with two new Adventure Labs, a potential bonus cache (?maybe?) and a high FP multi, and cheap fares, and a relatively clear calendar, today was the day.
Sadly, my personal "curse of the multis" struck again and although I thought I knew what the correct process for doing this one was, I maybe don't. After some initial confusion I found the information required to direct me to WP1. However on arrival, it didn't match the hint and I couldn't find anything there (although not really sure what I was looking for). I returned to try and check my coordinates, but that wasn't allowed so I went back again, still nothing. Searched for something matching the hint. Nothing. No idea what to do and after trying for an hour I abandoned this one and just did the two Ad Labs (which were much clearer).

An awesome way to take in the sights of the island. Our first time here and the warm autumn sun made for an excellent outing. Even made friends with a sheep we affectionately named John who tried to share our snacks with us. (He didn't get any snacks, but did curl up at our feet at the picnic table to eat some grass).
A lovely day had by all, highly recommend. Thanks for placing these caches.

What a fun day!! We found all 6 caches, and had to be pointed in the right direction for the first one from the ranger. But great fun and an awesome way to have a tour around the island. Even met a few friendly sheep. Shout out to George who was stuck but got rescued, and John who tried to get a sneaky snack from our picnic basket. Better luck next time John! TFTC’s!
A pleasant walk around the island to find all the caches. We spoke to the ranger at the start and he told us the missing cache had been replaced, so we were able to find them all. Cache no. 4 had a cracked container & was wet inside, so we couldn't sign the log.. Interesting history & beautiful nature.
Been eyeing up this cache for some time, today was the day. My first multi cache.
Windy but warm and my face is still feeling the heart.
Found caches 1, 2 , 3 , 4 and 6
cache 5 I believe I was in the right place double checked the coordinates and the location matched up with the hint.
Found what looked like the remains of a smashed green plastic container that looked it has been painted green, spent a good time looking for any type of replacement and no luck, with the ease of finding the other 5 lead me to believe that this cache may need to be replaced.
Without finding 5 meant we couldn't for the coordinates for the final cache, however read through some previous comments, and by using some clues through that and the hint managed to find cache 6 without the puzzle of cache 5.
Fun day out.

An excellent way to see the island!
We got off to a shaky start as we had to figure out how to enter the coordinates on the mobile app, and then didn't fully trust our calculations. But after we got #1 and feeling a lot more confident we managed to locate all the others. No. 6 was buried quite deep, as the log had not been signed since September 2019, but it is in good condition considering! Friends have since told us we may not have found the most recent Lighthouse one, but rather the original? Glass jar anyone? Perhaps the owner could let us know?
Thank you for this series - well worth the visit and the educational lessons at all 6 locations!

Checked to ensure that caches were were in good condition and that coordinates are correct
Excellent day exploring the island. Started with cache 2 as too many muggles, cache 6 said the first is not available all year round. Still managed to get a travel bug tag to start
Had a great time on the island and found caches 1 thru 4 but ran out of time to found the last two
Superb day for another trip to Somes.
Directed to the first 'cache', (apparently of 6), by the Ranger. Not sure that this is properly set up as a multicache with 6 waypoints and just the one final. We only found 2 of them and we signed both log books anyway so hopefully this is OK.
Saw lots of kakariki on the western side of the cicuit track. Also looked where suggested by the Ranger for tuatara but without success. Maybe next time!
Picked up the Geokur 2010 coin from one of the waypoint caches to continue its travels. Interestingly, its journey began in Baden-Württemberg; we hosted an exchange student in 1998 who came from Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg. Small world.
Thanks for the cache, DOC.

A great day for a trip over and a nice walk. Cache 4 was about 20 meters off the coordinates and cache 5 had no container at all so everything was very wet. But the kids had great fun doing the walk.
#1193. It was a nice school holiday boat trip with the grandchildren and their mum, plus GB Leader to visit Matiu/Somes Island, and of course, to find the cache.
The weather wasn't the best, but the rain stayed away.
Told the Ranger, Evan, that I was going to seek the cache and he showed me the starting point, and said Cache 1 may not be there, and where to find Cache 2. So started with that one, and then to Cache 3. But there the trail ended. No sign of cache 4, and without it, no chance of finding 5 or 6.
Went back to wait for the ferry, and found Cache 1 easily.
So, despite not finding the complete set, I am claiming the find. Maybe I will return to finish it off.

Yay, found them all! This was both helped and hindered by staying overnight on the island. This gave me plenty of time to find things. On the other hand it made it slightly harder as I tried to start searching in the middle of the island and the caches follow a logical sequence around the island.
I am posting quite a lot in this log as I see this cache is not found very often and the last 2 logs are DNF.
The first 2 clues were found in the Whare Kiore/Visitor Shelter.
The hint saying Harakeke is no longer accurate as the flax bush is dead. It would be better to say Polynesian sign or Kupe sign.
The clue directing to hospital has coordinates that are slightly off and I mistook the barracks for the hospital (which is not signposted) so it took a while to get that one.
Cache 5 was accurate in terms of hint and GPS but cache was quite wet inside.
Cache 6 was found easily but not quite where the hint said so I replaced under a leaning tree as per hint and covered with leaf litter.
Thanks to the rangers who helped with #1 and #2.

Told DOC person we were geocaching. She said to let her know if we found anything. Well no clues at the first waypoint, so a DNF since no more info or waypoints posted. Disappointed
If there are maintenance issues with the waypoint caches or finals they should be brought to the attention of the ranger on duty at the time.
What an awesome day, we’ve been meaning to do this one for a while and the perfect day presented itself in the holidays so we set off. It was great exploring the island and taking our time to watch the wildlife and the views too. Cache 5 is very soggy and definitely needs maintenance. The microcachers also has fun finding the kiwi guardians post as a bonus and we’ll be claiming their medals for that too. Thank you for a very well thought out multi and a great family day out.
We normally don't bother with mutli-caches but in the absence of any other caches on the island and the fact we had plenty of time due to staying overnight we decided to give this one a go. The various waypoints were quite easily found and we learned a lot of interesting info about the island and its wartime history.
Waypoint 4 was about 20m out but with the hint it should be pretty obvious (but of course we didn't realise there was a hint at the time so spent a lot of time looking in the wrong places)

Done on 12&13 Feb. Out here for a few days for work. It's such a special place, very lucky we get to come and stay out here! Highlights are always the night walks to spot tuatara and giant wētā!
Caches all in order bar the last two. #5 has a cracked lid so contents are a bit damp inside. Probably from the heavy hiding helpers.? Could use a bit of TLC. No sign of #6 for me, I was there as it was getting dark but felt 99% sure I had the right nook for it, alas empty. I'll check again next time we're here. Thanks for the fantastic tour and sneaky spots. Love this place!

Got to number 5 but wasn’t prepared to run to grab 6 before heading for the ferry.
A great wander on a beautiful day.
My wife was hoping for more history on the Internment Camp, where her Grandfather and his two brothers were held during WW1.

Fantastic family day out to celebrate a 40th Birthday today.
Crazy windy day, but lots of adventurous fun exploring the island, and the cache hunt was added value. Thanks for a great multicache.

Found the Vinces seat one. I missed the first clue in the hut so was winging it. Beautiful place filled w birds. Highlight was seeing a NZ falcon close up. TFTC
A great way to guide our family around the significant sites on the island, thanks.
Found the first five on a trip with my class but didn’t have time for the last one. Returned today to collect the last one and look at the beautiful view with my family. My son found number six before we even started looking for it!
Off to a good start I thought as cache #1 was available today. However when we got there we discovered a black backed gull nest with a day old chick (so cute) within two metres of the cache. What is worse whenever we approached the mother would leave the nest and shuffle directly under the cache (making a diversion?). This was just too much so we retreated to the quarantine hut to pick up the clue for cache #2.
Unfortunately we arrived just in time to see another boat load of visitors filing into the hut. Time for the island loop instead. There are lots of skinks and kakariki flying around. We also managed to see a karearea and tuatara (really have to look carefully to find that one).
I sent the family into the visitor centre and returned to the wharf just in time to see another boat pulling up. Rushed up to the clue and took a picture before I could be locked in.
The six containers are pretty easy to find and I recon you could pick up #3 without the clue and then complete the series (#6 has a clue for #1). This certainly makes for a better experience in what is a very interesting Multi. FP.
