Day 7: Up the WaitakiThe next bit of our journey brings us up the Waitaki on another fine but sometimes blustery day. We started the morning off wandering around Oamaru, and then drove up to visit the reservoirs and towns along the Waitaki. This proved to be yet another productive day of exploring and caching, so thanks for all the fun caches in lovely locations along the way. (End of the cut and paste bit) Another stop on a whim and the cache was also quickly found here. I love gum trees and this is a really nice one. Easily found once the right angle was had. TFTC!
Fun to find! Nice little container and I can confirm it is certainly by gum! TFTC!
One of several caches located today in driving from Moeraki through Oamaru to Awamoko, North Otago. Looked in a few crevices before hitting the right one! Last cache for the day, very close to my overnight stop. #6262. TFTC.
After spending a few hours around Barton Pond, we carried on to this cache, which somehow we have overlooked on previous drives along this road.
We parked across the road and wandered across to the rather large landmark. I started a circumnavigation clockwise while StreetWalkerNZ went in the opposite direction and one of us found the cache . Now time to do a U-turn and head back (via a few detours) to Duntroon. TFTC.

#22198. After an enjoyable visit to Borton's Ponds, we had time for a few drive bys on the way back to Duntroon. This was our turnaround point. Quick find at an impressive specimen. TFTC.
That is a big gum - by gum.
Thanks drawp for placing a cache here all those years ago and also for maintaining it. The tree it worth stopping just to have a look at. Cache it dry and an easy find for me today.

Wow. A really really big tree. Had to be a bit careful of the rusty barbed wire as we walked around the tree a couple of times. Such a shame the little church opposite has not been looked after. Coming up 100 years old in 2025. TFTC
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit … we are now parked up at Awamoko for a couple of days, exploring in & around the local area … as this cache is right across the road from where we’re staying, I thought it would be rude not to ‘nab’ it … found this with no issues, log completed & cache returned … pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally … TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #2,300 for us.
This was today's target on the mission to get at least one geocache every time I travel this road. Hardly any traffic today, and an impressive specimen to hunt around. Thanks drawp
Does what it says on the tin.
Quick find here but it was like grand central station for a while. The neighbour was sifting around, the road maintenance guys swung in to do a u turn and the postie roared through. We waited a minute and made a quick find. TFTC drawp.
Day 5 of a South Island road trip for RG1972 and I and today it is Lake Tekapo to Moeraki. A bit of driving then, and we need to leave time for side trips to the Cathedral cliffs and for a bit of exploring in Oamaru.
A pretty sweet day. There are hundreds of caches on our travels today, but we just drove past the majority. Nice views of the lakes on the left, and it’s the first time either of us have driven this road before and the towns like Kurow, although we have been through the towns that bookend the road many other times, from other directions. All caches found in good nick, and if they needed a bit of extra RITR paper they got it. TFTC all COs.

By gum this was a goodie
Day 5 of our South Island road trip and today is Lake Tekapo to Moeraki, with mini deviations along the way to the Clay Cliffs, Elephant Rocks & Oamaru.
A very cool day exploring & I've never driven the road from Omarama to Oamaru, so a win win!

An impressive gum tree indeed. Took a couple of circuits to find. Watch out for barbed wire embedded in the tree. Thanks drawp.
Away in the Geocamper on a TMGT mission around the lower South Island. We stayed overnight at the NZMCA Park at Awamoko so we could carry on up the road and do the other two TMGT caches. By the time we got to Awamoko yesterday we were too tired to carry on. We discovered there were two caches very close by so this morning we walked out to do this one first. Soon found by Mr S on his birthday. Gum tree's drop so much debris, no wonder the Aussies call them widow makers. In fact we had a friend in OZ who lost a mate to a gum tree, when a branch came whistling down.
Thanks drawp.
Thanks drawp.
There was a tractor in the paddock behind the church but the gum kept me hidden. Thanks drawp

We were parked up for the night at the nearby domain and decided on a stroll in the evening. No problem finding this cache or remaining unseen by passing traffic while signing the log.
Thank you drawp.
Thank you drawp.
All set up for the night at the domain the balmy evening lend itself well for a stroll. This tree certainly has some stories to tell just like that wee church. A magnificent specimen. Thank you drawp
A quick find here. Such a shame to see the neglect of the lovely wee church nearby. TFTC!!!
I had moved my snail shell down the Waitaki Valley to Awamoko for a few days. Today I needed at least 6 caches for my personal challenge of having all the days on my calendar at the same shade of green or darker.
Not quite a Eureka moment but yes, by gum, I found it.
Cheers for the cache.

Spotted the gum from miles away. Plenty Mighty Oaks in the area, but this is an Almighty Oak!
Today was a trip down memory lane, I lived in the area for 15 years, worked across the road for a coupe of them, had many fun events with Young Farmers Club in the domain, and as a teenager I dreamed of getting married in the church next door. I remember horrendously windy nights here and being terrified that tree would crash through the roof if it came down... I live almost 4 hours away now, so it's always nice to come back and see how much everything has changed. TFTC and a fave point from me.
Day 2 of our 6-Day End of the Year caching trip to Dunedin. A nice quick find on the way to Bortons Pond (hopefully for a swim) as its pretty hot tonight. Thanks for placing the cache and adding to our smilies. Happy Caching
Something shot out one of the nooks while trying to find the cache. Don't know who got the biggest shock! Anyhow was happy to log and pick up a pathtag on my first December dot days which I have quite a few. TFTC drawp. Awesome specimen of a tree for sure.
Found together with Mel180 on our way from Oamaru to Mount Cook ! Thanks for the Cache !
Day 7 - of our (The Seagnoid, Toby, Zara, & myself) epic adventure around amazing Oamaru. With Geofest17 and Danseys Pass and A2O bagged, we are off exploring Oamaru again.
We left A2O when the rain started but thankfully this side of the domain was still dry - so the washing was all dry. With dinner over we walked over here to checkout this church and cache. Snagged and tagged. Cheers

Tyabeedragon and I cycled most of the A2O from the elephants a few days ago. Now we are back, mopping up sections that we missed.
Last few caches for the day, about time we did the ones right outside our gate! Nice chruch. Shame they all have to be locked now.

Replaced the logbook into new bag while here on my way home after GeoFest. Thanks for another smile for my growing list of finds this trip.
Always been meaning to stop and have a closer look at this church. 2 birds with 1 stone today. TFTC. Found with Gadget and K.J.R
Up in Oamaru for day #2 of the Oamaru geofest. Out with Sirbennis and KJR grabbing lots of caches. TFTC
By gum it is!! Nearly had a mishap with a phone but we found it. Signed as TIE. TFTC
Yes, indeedy, by gum! It is a magnificent specimen and we enjoyed looking at the nearby church. It's raining a bit so we were glad that we were able to find the cache quite quickly. All good here and thanks for the cache.
Found with TTT. Having a wonderful time caching with the group and going to all of the Geofest events! Thanks for all of the work!
In Oamaru for the Geofest.
Day #2 out and about with Gadget169 and sirbennis.
Nice quick find and by gum it sure is a magnificent specimen! TFTC

Quick find however soggy log. Sorry - I had already used my spare logsheets earlier in the day so couldn’t replace. Managed to scrawl names.
Thanks for another smilie.

Thanks to the Cache Owner who has gone to the trouble of creating this cache, determining the coordinates and then averaging them to make sure they are accurate, placing the cache and registering it online for our enjoyment. Without Cache Owners doing their bit, there wouldn’t be a fun hobby that we all love - so again a big THANK YOU. For our bit, all we need to do is find and log the cache that was carefully placed for our personal enjoyment. As we log it we should consider that the Cache Owner also needs to maintain it - when the log sheet fills up, they must replace it. When the container becomes full of water, they need to empty it. When the container is broken, they need to repair it. When it goes missing they need to find or replace it. Well..... the great news is we can do our bit too - make sure your log doesn’t take an entire page - just a name and date. If full of water, empty and dry the cache as best as possible. Be careful when handling the cache and make sure you replace it where you found it. If it has a bag, seal it. Just remember - the Cache Owner showed respect to you by placing the cache - please respect them and fellow cachers that follow you by being careful with the cache. And if you have a spare log sheet and the cache you are at needs one, please leave it behind. Finally, if the cache does need maintenance, please let the Cache Owner know - you can log a Maintenance Log or you can drop a line to the Cache Owner. Above all - have fun and remember the Geocaching Code. .
Thanks for another smilie.

Found while racing around Oamaru with Injeanious. We signed the log as JeJe. Log book was soaked, TFTC!
With Gap (of Fap and Gap)… Our journey to the bottom of the South Island has been almost two years in the planning. We were determined to make it to Oamaru Geofest. We decided to also factor in completing a couple of missions (JASMER and Virtual challenges), and the wheels started turning...
Day Five: Oamaru Geofest
We decided to spend our morning in the north, around the Top Hat series. There were so many hides in this area. Today was going to be about piling on numbers... Gap and I worked out a system that helped to move things along, and it great that most hides were in good order and in play. Most caches were quick finds... Spied others looking for this one. Logbook was very wet. TFTC.

Found after a bit of a search. Then got caught up in hurd of cattle being moved up the road. Another soggy logbook though TFTC
The name comes in handy and so does the clue easy find. Near a beautiful specimen that would otherwise be overlooked if it weren't for this geocache
