A year had passed. It's still closed. https://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/public/lighthouses-of-new-zealand/east-cape/

The walk up to the lighthouse is still closed so we were unable to do this great looking walk today.

This most eastern cache was one of our goal for this trip around Gisborne, Napier, Rotorua and Turangi, but the track is closed. We should have checked before coming, but the road was still very nice and enjoyable. We also spent some time looking at the beautiful horses and answering questions about them. One our way we were sadden by a search and rescue operation on the coast. This reminds us life is fragile. We didn't know this place was a gathering place for New Year's eve, and we understand the decision to close it to prevent gathering. We'll come back later, when it is safer for everyone, thanks for placing this here!

Cloudy morning, perfect day for a walk up the steps and what a view, no muggles around either. Great cache. TFTC Smile

The lighthouse! Overwhelmed by it's sight I forgot looking for the cache and walked on up. Looked around, took photos, enjoyed the cold wind on my face. Oh yes, there was a cache. Rookie mistake, my phone gps had me 20km away further inland... Luckily Wilbywarrior is a professional and had it all under control.

The rain had stopped for us to make the walk up here so was happy with that. The steps were a bit slippery so caution was needed. After taking the happy snaps and having a snack we set about looking for this one. The last log proved useful and we soon had the cache in hand. All up it took us 55 minutes return including finding both caches. Had the lighthouse to ourselves and only passed another couple at the gate when on the way back. This was a main target for this trip so glad the weather came right on the day.
Malinkaly and I planned a road trip to go to the MEGA but Covid has postponed the event again. We decided to continue on with our planned journey making adjustments as we go with the ever-changing travel restrictions.
Greetings from Dunedin!
Thanks for the cache, Te Reo Maori

On our way from Hicks Bay to Gisborne today but first a wee detour to find New Zealand’s (and now our) most eastern Geocache.
No idea where to look on our first sweep. We then did the tourist thing. Took photos and marvelled at the view. Went back to where wood kisses concrete and then followed the gps over the bank finding a big lump of concrete. Certain we’d found the spot but no, not here. Back on the path and start thinking like a cache hider.
Finally put my hands on it. I wish we’d focused more on the wood and not the concrete then we would have found it faster.
Loved the walk up the hill and the panoramic views at the top. We had the place to ourselves today.

We couldn’t have picked a more perfect day to visit the lighthouse! GZ had us stumped for a few minutes, then figured it out. Was an easy find after all! Swapped out TB for a TB. TFTC.

Visited this spot during my East Cape Easter 2021 journey.
This is actually my second visit in the area. But last time I haven't got time for all hides in the East Cape area.
This time is quite different story. My longer Easter break is dedicated to this area only.

It was my main "target". It will be for sure my most easterly cache found... For a while anyway.
No problems at all with the hide. Great location and lighthouse too.
Dropped off TB.

#12,681. Good walk up from East Cape Road in East Cape, Te Araroa, Gisborne. Great views very much as expected. The iconic East Cape Lighthouse sits on the easternmost point of New Zealand and is absolute magic. Fortunately GZ was all quiet at the time of our visit. Found after a short search. The cache was in good condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log. Thanks for the placement, and for bringing us to this site, and .T h a n k s. .f o r. .t h e. .c a c h e..M a u r u u r u. .k o e. .n u i. .a t u. .h o k i. .t e. .k e t e r o k i.

We are on our summer holiday, we usually take a few weeks and travel around the South Island, but this year we are heading around the North Island. Heading up the West coast and back down the East coast. Finding only a select few caches along the way, we are mostly targeting some challenges we have qualified for, some large size caches, some that fill gaps in our date placed grid, a few D/T combinations, some with lots of favourite points, letterboxes and anything else that grabs our fancy.

I had a fall on day two of our holiday, while out geocaching which has resulted in a fractured bone in my leg and I am in a moon boot and with crutches and I was told to keep weight off my leg. So I am only limited use when it comes to our trip now. I tend to stay in the campervan and just hand out suggestions of when and where GK should search.

While I sat in the campervan gk headed up the hill to find the two caches. Once the first one was done and dusted he headed up to the lighthouse. He took some photos with the other people who were up there and once they had gone he made an easy find. He had a bit of an explore of the lighthouse then made his way back down the hill. He enjoyed the location and wants to give this one a favourite Smile
I read somewhere that this is the eastern most cache in New Zealand so we will watch to see if it shows as such in our statistics.

Thanks for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley.

Day 7 of my week long road trip of geocaching, camping and seeing a few bands. Today I'm heading to Gisborne, the long way.

Having camped the night nearby, I got up early to head to the lighthouse. Climbed the stairs, not as bad as I thought it would be. Fantastic views, as expected, and finally I can rock off "New Zealands Eastern most cache"

Muggles everywhere eventually retrieved the cache. Found everything wet. After drying everything except the two old log books which I put in aplastic by themselves replaced log swag and waited for a opportunity 40 minutes later to hide cache.

This is the time of year to escape from Gisborne while all the R&V revellers enjoy themselves. Decided to head up the coast. Stayed the night at Te Araroa. This morning got on my bike to visit the lighthouse. A bit of gravel road but not as much as there used to be. Didn’t take long to find the cache with the hint. Picked up the TB. Thanks for the smiley.

Second time lucky for this one and three years between visits. On the first visit it was gray, cold and blowing an absolute gale. Today it was cold, grey and blowing an absolute gale! On the first visit I was relying on my cell phone. This time I brought the GPSr as a backup and it gave me the result I was looking for. We had a couple of muggles arrive at the lighthouse very shortly after we arrived. Luckily the weather meant they didn't stay long and and the find was quickly made. Left a TB which is trying to head north. I hoped to drop it around Tauranga but only found small (or even smaller) caches until this one. TFTC

On a road trip with NZ Bozzy finding TMTG caches , many oldies and also filling in some DT spaces. Today we took my first trip around East Cape . beautiful day and lots of views.
Took us sometime to find this one. Constant arrival of muggles not helping .
As usual the cache was where it should be .

You can guess what happened as there is no pencil at this cache so sorry I have just taken a photo of log.
This cache took ages to find - and of course it was were I looked in the first place. We also had to wait on others to leave.
Looking south clouds are building. Looks like rain is coming. But it was nice when we climbed up here.

Travelling from Lottin Point to Gisborne today with Nosynel and Ethness. Our goal is to find all the TMGT caches in a big figure 8 across the centre of the North Island. Enjoyed the walk up despite a pounding headache. Just took it slow. Tested my son in Arrowtown with where I am by sending the geocode details just past the lighthouse. He got it! Thanks for placing a cache hete. Maybe this will be my furthest east.

This was the second time I have searched. This time I was successful am on a North Island Figure of Eight tour. For the first 4 days I spend time in the Bay of Plenty with my husband JDScout in Rotorua. Now I am on part one of the eight loop going around the Eastern Cape. This part is being done with my good friends Ethness and Jude_E.

A bit of a trip away to get out the Waikato, I decided to target some Eastern GeoTour caches. This trip ended up being 1294kms over the two days, and a good run for the car. Day 2

I'd never been around the East Cape before, so I planned on doing it after the Gisborne GeoTour series had been collected. Really nice drive up here. I met a local on the track who was heading up, taking a breather. I said hi and carried on. On the way down after collecting, I had a quick chat with him as he hadn't made it up yet... turns out he was attending an alarm activation on the lighthouse.... I mentioned I was security and that I could have attended it for him! Great to finally check this one off, as it's been on my radar for quite a few years.

TFTC Te Reo Maori, the cache was found in good order Very Happy Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 7 find(s) of 10 today, making this find #2226

Actually this should be a find log, but unfortunately my beloved husband Destinator and me couldn't travel as planned. Instead of having lots of fun outside, the Coronavirus made us stay at home. We had awesome plans for our holidays from the end of March until the middle of April. Viisiting New Zealand and Australia for sightseeing und doing some interesting, adventurous, important, old and nice Geocaches. This one we wanted to discover today and it would have been our most eastern find! We really hope to get the chance to fetch it later in the year...
We hope you are safe and healthy.

Best greetings from Germany!

We really came for the steps, as we climb the Hakarimata steps at Ngaruawahia every other day, so we are missing them while we are away. The stunning coastline, lighthouse and caches were all bonuses. 32 minutes up and back with a good look around and two caches. Left a Marvel--ous blockhead.

Always love an adventure to find a cache. This one ticked a few boxes and with the bonus of a stunning view from GZ.
Was very excited that this might be the most easterly cache in the world which would have been an absolute must get. Hanjac did a bit of research for me and we thought it may well be.. Did a bit of sleuthing this morning and found that there are actually a couple of far flung caches in Fiji that are on the 179deg meridian so this one only counts as NZs most easterly and now mine too

Thanks for the adventure

Great walk up on a cold, blustery day, with great views along the way. Wowed at the top with epic panorama, especially the fabulous island Whangaokena. Took all of the obligatory photography, but had to delay our cache search as we were joined by others. Not too long an outwaiting, and photoed the bonus trig as well, we targetted in on GZ. Had to resort to hint, and once fully interpreted... the find was made. All in good order, signed, and replaced carefully, even though we had now been joined by others.

Day 14 of our tour took us from Gizzy further into the northeast. The beginning of the day was a bit boring because of very few caches along the road. It seems that we are no more used to drive longer than one hour without a cache or a stop for a view point. The first highlight of the day was the Tolaga Bay Wharf with one find and one DNF. The second highlight of the day was the drive to the East Cape and the most eastern caches of NZL and maybe of the world. The last one at the lighthouse was really difficult to find but finally we did it. Unbelievable that people live there in total loneliness. The last cache of the day was a very interesting earthcache at the oldest Pohutakawa tree of NZL. We would have missed this without the cache. Thanks for showing.

We only had a minute up there without any muggles around.. but then the next family arrived. So we had to wait for another hour until everybody was on their way down again and I was able to take another look! Yep - there it was - well camouflaged. The logbook is still wet and I had no time to dry it, because there was another couple arriving and I wanted to hide it before I had to wait another half an hour...
Thanks for bringing us up here . the view is well worth the effort of climbing all the steps!

14.30: I did the 755 stairs once more for a second attempt after our first visit at this wonderful place on December, 5th, 2012. At that time I search for more than twenty minutes in fog, rain and heavy wind. I got completely soaked but found at least the cache down at the bench, which marked our easternmost since that time. Today the weather is much better than six years ago and so a lot more visitors all around. But during my caching work I was almost alone at the summit. The instructive hint matched pretty well and after a few grabs I held the little (well camouflaged[8)]) box in my hands. So this one marks our easternmost caches from now on and most likely it will last for quite a while...

Weather: sun, some clouds, gusty winds, 17°C;
Wheelchair: no, stairs, steep and narrow path;
State: all good.

Thank you for bringing me up here (once more)! A favourite point goes out for this one and we will keep an eye on itWink!

Today we made a trip from Hicks Bay to Gisborne, again on the route of the Pacific Highway, thereby visiting many new sightseeing locations and looking for caches, too. On this trip we searched, found and logged a lot of caches. The weather was very good all day long, a bit colder in the morning but it got warmer in the afternoon. Funny clouds were our compagnions especially in the afternoon.
Almost no muggels observed us as they had other things to do than observing harmless geocachers.

Thanks to Te Reo Maori (me Te Araroa whanau) for showing us this location and for the fun we had at Ka Awatea Hou (Te Tairawhiti). The search we had here today didn't take too much time.
For putting a geocache at this favorite Location we give a favorite, too.

Greetings from Germany and hope to see you soon in the forest.

Found while in area with muggle sister. Originally climbed up here 40 years ago with another sister and parents. Puffed quite a bit more this time. Had to come and get the eastern most NZ cache I am likely to get. Not too many muggles so reasonably easy to find and retreive. Had to delay replacing as some muggles who beat us up the hill were looking in the direction of the cache for some time. Eventually they went down and was able to replace. TFTC. Worth a fav for location.

Day 6 - Wednesday - Te Araroa to Tauraunga. Another day in the sun - so lets go!

Finally made it up to the Lighthouse on a wonderful windless day. Sadly the info signs have all gone. So time to start searching - but we are searhing in the wrong place for an old cache. OK there is still a cache but just a bit down there. Finally snagged and tagged. Cheers. What an amazing place. Fav from me.

The Seagnoid, Zara and I are on another epic caching adventure for the next two weeks, starting with the Wellington Mega, then East Cape, Taraunga, Waihi, Rotorua and back to Wellington. Its been an awesome journey, over 2500 klms later, visiting many amazing places. Thanks to all COs

Spent a lot of time hunting for the cahe here, then realised it is one of the archived ones I had especially loaded in my GPS. well, so many archived caches are still in place, it's worth a look. Disappointed I turned away and was about to hit the steps when I realised there was a live cache here too..
So anyway, before hunting for the two caches, we had an explore of the site. There is a sign in the light house that should be at the bottom of the steps. Why lug it up here?? Great views. Wonderful place, well worth a favoutire.

Day 6 of my Mega trip: East Cape to Tauranga. Two weeks of travel with Taybeedragon, from Blenheim to the 2018 mega event, then on to my mum's eightieth birthday in Rotorua via the East Cape and Tauranga and the hole in the ground that is Waihi. Dropped the dragon off in Wellington while I continued on to Motueka for more family time before at last arriving home. We may have only found 230 caches over that 3000 km, but I qualified for 4 badge upgrades, hit the 10,000 cache mark, and even have a missing month ticked off! Throughout most of the trip we targeted special caches - earth caches, virtuals, wherigos, etc, although there were a lot of traditionals too. On the cache maintenance side about eight caches were replaced, and many more logs were added to or replaced. Many thanks to everyone who made this an awesome trip.

One week off during school holiday time, combined with some cheap flights made a great adventure in the HB and Gisborne area, popping into BoP a couple of times also. I had great fun and I am grateful to all CO's who placed the caches for others' entertainment!!
Perfect timing before a family made it up here! TFTC!!

Yes, the road was a tad scary in a couple of places and the 755 / 800 steps were a bit of a challenge but we just had to visit this special place. It is amazing to stand where the first light hits the mainland each day and always has, the views are amazing. And this will probably be the most easterly cache we ever find. We appreciate that the area is of special significance to Maori and thank you for sharing that with us. Kia ora, e tika hoki.

Caching with Sidewaze as we make our way around East Cape to Tauranga and then back to the South Island via Palmerston North and ferry across Cook Strait. Wow! I made it up all those steps. It was well worth the climb! TFTC Kia ora rawa atu.
