In Canberra with a free afternoon so up Black Mountain I go. Stunner of a day. Bit of a slog, given I've not been going up hills as of late, but a cache on the way really makes up for it. Wasn't aware this was such an old cache until I came to log it, but I had an inkling by the name... lovely to see a bit of local history. TFTC
Kolour and I organised a long weekend in Canberra to catch up with the great Domsky duo. Of course there was much caching to be done! Off the plane this morning, a CITO, challenge caches and some targeted caches were on the agenda. We couldn't leave this oldie unfound!A quick find here, thanks geodesy#5 for the cache.
Im visiting Canberra from Brisbane with Willis007 for a long weekend with the Domsky duo, our wonderful guides, targeting mainly oldies and challenges. This is my first time geocaching in the ACT.After a short walk, the cache was soon found under a spor. Great to find another oldie on this beautiful mountain. Tftc
TFTC from the Kayakviking! Stayed over on a work trip and got up for the Mountain walk. Targeted this oldie which is in good condition.Cheers KV
I was heading out to the dinner event at the Southern Cross Club early, so I stopped by Black Mountain to pick up a couple of key geocaches. This was the second. I was very pleased to find another old geocache (thank you to everyone who has hidden and maintained this for so many years!), and hope that I have enough from 2000-2001 for the "Golden Oldies" challenge further down Black Mountain. Thanks for the cache, geodesy#5
1320 for the tribeEnjoyed some caching around the Black Mountain Summit today. Gosh its been a long time since any of the tribe were up here but the carpark is as it was then! Sadly the tower as a tourist attraction is in a state of disrepair with many closed doors and ramps. Happily the bush is beautiful as ever with some amazing scribbly gums, cracking views and interesting rock formations to be seen. Cache in great condition with plenty of room in the logbook.Very happy to plug a hole in the Jasmer grid with this retro cache and it also helps work towards some challenge caches. A big thanks to the caching community for keeping this one alive over the years.
I've had my eyes on this '01 hide for a while now, not least as it's a Jasmer hole for me and reasonably easily accessed!Perhaps that ease of access is what's made me procrastinate actually getting it, but after work today I decided that a drive up the mountain was worthwhile.Supposedly the Telstra Tower will be opening back up at some point, so it's a good thing I could get here before all the tourists could - although, curiously, there have always been a few other cars with people taking photos of the enormous structure whilst I've been up here to grab caches!A wander down the trail took me to a likely outcrop of rocks in a nice and quiet location. It wasn't long until I approached gz from the correct angle that presented a familiar flash of blue. The logbook is dry and was signed near some familiar overlapping Victorian names! Thanks to geodesy#5 for placing this one here all those years ago!
Oh wow! A historic cache!Glad to say this container and log are looking fantastic.Bit of tough climb for me, but we managed!
I heard about this cache during the Black Mountain event in the lead up to the Mega, after speaking with the great Sleepyhollow.I hadnt realised there was such an oldie up here! And as it turned out, it was right on the way to the summit of a Saturday jaunt from the Botanic Gardens to the top with Baristayan, and Frenchykek (with two geo kiddies in tow).Great view! All in terrific condition and some excellent autumn views poking through the trees. Thanks!
We walk the Scenic Forest Trak on the Black Mountain. So we visit the Tower and some Caches. Thank you for the Caches !
Great HideThanks geodesy#5 for the cacheJames0116Saturday, 13 Apr 20249:51:47am AEST4490
Day #8 Geobashing It was our last day in Canberra, so OzHockeyChick and I made a must do list all over Canberra for our last day. We werent going to let the weather stop us.Great to grab this old cache. A foggy walk down to GZ from the top lead to a cache still in good order after all these years. I was surprised to see so few logs in it, but maybe everyone already has it since its been here for so long!A big thanks goes to geodesy#5 for taking the time to add Geocache to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Looking for caches to find when visiting Victoria? Why not check out the geocaching lists available on the [Geocaching Victoria Website](https://geocachingvictoria.com.au/information/great-caching-lists/). There are plenty to choose from including all of the previous nominees and winners of the Victorian Cache of the Year Awards.
Found by The Empire + HRising majestically to an elevation of 812 meters, Black Mountain stands as a sentinel on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the region's fascinating geological history. As we ascended the winding road to the summit, we marvelled at the dramatic landscape unfolding before us. The rugged slopes of Black Mountain, cloaked in native bushland, served as a sanctuary for a diverse array of flora and fauna, showcasing the resilience and beauty of Australia's natural heritage.Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by breathtaking vistas stretching across the cityscape and beyond, providing a bird's-eye perspective of Canberra's iconic landmarks and surrounding countryside. From the shimmering waters of Lake Burley Griffin to the distant peaks of the Brindabella Ranges, the panoramic views offered a sense of awe and appreciation for the vastness and beauty of the Australian landscape. As we explored the summit area, we couldn't help but be intrigued by the unique geological formations and rock outcrops that dot the landscape. Black Mountain's sandstone and inter-bedded siltstone revealed layers of geological history, with evidence of ancient seas, tectonic activity, and erosion sculpting the rugged terrain over millions of years. Thanks for the cache geodesy#5.-M
Canberra Geobash Road Trip 2024. Day Eight: More caches of interest around Canberra, focussing on Virtuals and AdLabs due to the inclement weather today. We battled our way through the fog to find this oldie. I imagine the views from up here may be quite spectacular. Not today though. Thanks for bringing us here by placing this cache, geodesy#5 ~ ~
1 April 2024 2:40pmFind # 10047An extended Easter holiday with +Wife, EveTheStaffy, and nirgalagrin. Our first time caching in ACT. In fact, our last visit here was 25 years ago.I walked down from the top and continued through to the lower carpark. It is always great to find one of these older caches.Thank you geodesy#5 for the cache.
Found while attending the Capital GeoBash. With so much to see and do in Canberra, Black Mountain looked like a great area to explore, and it certainly lived up to expectations.Thrilled to be able to log this golden oldie. Perfect location.Thank you geodesy#5 for highlighting this area.
Visiting from Virginia USA. Happy to get this second oldest cache in Canberra and visit the tower area we have seen so many times from below. Thanks!
With the tower closed it was pretty quiet up the mountain. We parked close to the track and made the short but hot walk to gz. A quick find was made of this oldie then back up to the car.Great to be able to log this one. Thanks geodesy#5
Here for the geobash. Caches signed as GJX. Our three gcoven JACSTeam and xrocketx. Saturday was seek all ye can find day! Fab mix of cache types with some valuable oldies plus the big event! Just rocket and I for this one! Love a good oldie
In Canberra for the GeoBash, we were out seeking some oldies for the day. They don't get much older than this one! Cheers!
17:44Happy Easter!Capital GeoBash Day 3.Today, it was back to my main focus of Challenge caches... so I parked at the base of Black Mountain and set off for what ended up being a little over nine klicks of hiking. And what does one do after a 9km hike below Black Mountain? Why, a few klicks at the summit, of course.I took a clockwise walk on the eastern side. Now, that accounts for a couple of kilometres, so where's the third come in?Well... the first thing I did when I reached the ACT was to hide all the Traditional hides on the map, so I could navigate. Usually, I remember to show them again when I'm covering a small area, but not always. This time, I turned on the whole gamut when I was about to leave... and there it was. I'd walked straight past this venerable hide. Oops.So off I went, back down the track to find out that the hint is, as is often the case, slightly less useful than it might be. But that's to be expected after all this time.I probably followed the least useful approach angle, but that put me where I needed to be to, in the end, easily spot the hiding spot.Anyway, another 2001 cache logged. Somewhat unexpectedly. Thanks, geodesy#5.#8654
Well, for someone that has not bothered to do anything geocaching related for a while I seem to be going out of the way to do Mega events. This particular caching trip was the brainchild of the other participant in this little excursion, that being greencordial. I flew into Toowoomba so we could drive down and pick up plenty of LGAs along the way. We got into Canberra late on Day 2 after picking up some challenges at Yass Day 3 and we chased many virtuals and caches in the city centre Day 4 saw a continuation of the UGC challenges, multis, virtuals and the odd tree fish as well as a wedding, a lackey and volunteer event were undertaken. Day 5 sees us start at parliament house. Then Questaconn for some non geocaching amusement now here for a bit of Jasmer action Thanks geodesy#5 for placing this Traditional for me to convert into a smilie
Massive caching days continue. My online logs do not match with days found simply because I cant keep up with online logging sorry. My alliance of 5 all from WA are three young fit boys and two less young ladies who try to keep them honest. We have been up trees and ladders way more than I like and, like all geocachers who insist on wearing shorts in hot weather, our legs are ripped to shreds from hiking. Logging WAC since the three boys usually cache with a fourth called the Cockburn Crew based on their LGA. Having an almost totally cleared map locally, its difficult to explain the excitement of having a map that has caches literally everywhere. Ive cached in Canberra once with my partner and also at the Queanbayen mega but theres still so many to find. Long days and during the few hours allocated to sleep Im so sore I barely sleep anyway. Thanks so much for your contribution to making the days so exhausting and enjoyable. Much appreciated!
This is a bit of an oldie. I wont tell you what I was doing in 2001, but I am fairly certain my Year 3 teacher was nice. Ben and i had to get it. I was able to walk up the hill very quickly. Greencordial asked BenM70 to do up a caching found template while she is doing the driving and Im doing duck all. Im actually just pressing the screen randomly like Im actually enthused to be doing this. Anyways, we are visiting the national capital to attend Grrencordial2nd mega as I got scared by Covid for Dayboro and didnt take the punt that Townsvilles coolest cachers BenM70 and burgo78 did. Thank you geodesy#5 for placing this cache for me to enjoy!
In Canberra for the geobash. Geokid scampered down the mountain and found this one easily. TFTC
Out and about again, headed around Canberra for the MEGA. Super excited my first MEGA and heading over with 2 others from the Cockburn Crew - signed log as WAC to save time. This is 14511, hoping to clock over the 15,000 finds in the week in New South Wales and ACT.Thanks to geodesy#5 for the caches we found.********** ********** ********** ********** ********** **********OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024 OZMEGA2024********** ********** ********** ********** ********** **********Head over to Australian Capital Territory for Capital GeoBash MEGA - Canberras first ever Mega Event. Heaps of challenge caches, hikes for geocaches for all levels of skills and fitness.
Exciting times over the next couple of weeks as we takeoff for the Capital GeoBash in Canberra! Its going to be a flood of Sandgropers over east, with a host of West Aussies making the trek east for the event. Im travelling with fellow Cockburn Crew members Leg5 and Barnzy12, starting in Sydney and hitting the road to Canberra, before returning back to Sydney. Honourary mention to our fellow member, Cravo10, who couldnt make it after recently introducing a new geocacher to the world the week prior. Once in Canberra, the agenda is set, well team up with a host of Western Australians to conquer caches. Collectively, were hoping to make it the biggest ever weekend for cache finding. Following the event, the journey continues back to Sydney, with a mission to clean up caches and new Local Government Areas (LGAs), ensuring no cache is left unturned in this epic geocaching adventure. Something tells me that well need a holiday after this, well, holiday. All logs have been signed as WAC to save space, abbreviation for Western Australia Crew. Cheers geodesy#5! Join us in Augusta, in Western Australias South West, for WA Goes Big 2024 (GCAGV8Y) on Friday 20 to Sunday 22 September. Log your will attend now!
Day 6 of my Canberra Mega adventure. Out caching with the members of the WAC crew. The day looks to be another sunny day, so a great day for geocaching . Very happy to claim a smiley here . WAC members- Barnzy12, Lachie1.17, legs5 and Neva2old Some logs signed as N2O or WACThis is my 13034 find Thankyou geodesy#5for placing and maintaining this cache.
Nice to grab an oldie, Shame the tower is closed but still a popular place to visit and walk around. Now chasing caches around Canberra for the Easter 2024 Geobash, signing as TAD which encompasses Tenkae, Astro and Deanside. Enjoying great company and the different aspects of our Commonwealth Capital. Thanks geodesy#5 for contributing to this great game for myself and others to enjoy.
The Cockburn Crew are on tour at the Capital Geobash in Canberra - travelling from Perth to Sydney, Canberra, Sydney and finally back to Perth.Today was day 2 and we had an absolute blast. After being up late last night we backed it up again this morning with an early start to make the most of the cooler weather and lack of muggles in the morning cold. We completed a huge number of trails, challenges, whereigos, traditional, multis, earthcaches, labs, virtuals and puzzles. It really was a great day for variety. We enjoyed the large number of virtuals, and caching in territory we havent been before. Weve filled our boots with some of the oldest caches in Australia, some rare DTs and DTTs and generally had a great time. Thanks to the COs for a great day and event. Logs signed as part of team WAC (WA Crew)
Found this cache on dusk during the Canberra MEGA event. Thanks for keeping this old cache going, nice walk and view to here.
Managed to avenge a DNF here today. So good!! Indeed the cache was not there before. All new and shiny now. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Found on the Mega Capital Geobash coastal loop via Adelaide - Barrington - coast to Mexico City loop. A lot of caches and white line fever was sweated out. Thanks geodesy#5 and clear skies from TeamAstro. ?? Cache the planet! ?? We'd visited the Telstra tower a couple of years ago and climbed to the top, but we'd heard the place was now abandoned and decided to come up to check out the changes. It's sad that it's no longer open, but we were here now, so set off to grab some caches and get a spot of exercise. We chose a short circuit to focus on and headed down the hill... with the sun slowing sinking behind us, the colours were stunning. This cache was soon spotted and signed as TAD, avenging an old DNF for Astro and adding a new cache to our JASMAR for us. tftc
Found during the Mega event in Canberra over the Easter long weekend. Our team comprised courtneyrose_, Davidwazza, e.gregory1, Featherwaite, Freddo, gridge98 and Team Waldron, signing the logs as ABP to save time and space in the logbooks , or with our individual caching names. Found while attending the Mega event in Canberra over Easter.Today I teamed up with FeatherWaite, Team Waldron, gridge98, Freddo and Davidwazza. Logs were signed ABP to save time and space on the logsheets. It was a productive day, focusing mainly on caches of interest, with an emphasis on the Virtual caches and a couple of older ones. The weather was fine and quite warm, in contrast to some of the other times Ive been in Canberra over Easter.Nice to find this old one. Thanks geodesy#5 for the cache.
Found with MummyPenny. Made this harder than necessary by heading way down the wrong track, only to head way back up to start again. Thanks geodesy#5.
Getting tired on this hot day, glad to rest in shady spots with Baktrak.Found and returned thanks geodesy#5
Found while attending the Mega event in Canberra over Easter. The trip bit.Easter geocaching festival of twenty twenty four. This time it is the turn of Oz Mega GeoBash MEGA event in the nation's capital. It is time for a road trip across country to Canberra in the Sporty Pajero Sports. Freddo and Gridge98 traveling from Adelaide via a strange inland route that takes in scenic rural locations, dusty roads, punctured tyres, overheating batteries, various tools of the trade, special campgrounds, and lots scope for many many geocaching finds. Along the way we saw running emus, jumping kangaroos, wandering deer, dead foxes, herds of wooly sheep and stray steers.Arriving in Canberra we met our colleagues e.gregory1, featherwaite, team walron, courtney rose, davidwazza, e_smilie, and georode, signing as ABP, plus a huge group of other like minded excited mega geocachers attending event after event, and more events.Day one. Canberra to QueenbeeyanDay eight. Canberra to AdelaideThe generic bit.I will apologize right now, because everything from here on is here solely for the purpose of padding the word count and winning that one hundred word diamond badge again. Somebody moved the goal posts. So many caches to find. So many caches to log. We find them, sign them and replace them. This particular geocache was found using one of the following GPS enabled devices, Garmin GPSr, Montana 680t, Oregon 650 or Dakota 20 and an Apple iPhone 11 using the marvelous Cachly app. Waypoints and paperless geocaching were downloaded via GSAK 9. Log prepared, checked and submitted using GSAK publish logs macro.Warning, this hobby can be addictive. It can lead to exercise, meeting new people and finding interesting places you might not have known existed otherwise. Beware: you may have fun. Apologies for the generic part of the cache log. We do apologise for the generic logs. Thanks to all the cache owner for placing this cache here for our enjoyment. Thanks for the cache. Merci la cache. Danke fr den Cache. Gracias por el cach. I am in Canberra for the Capital City Geobash Mega Event and this old cache was on my to find list for today. It was found (my first for the day) so thank you for placing and maintaining this cache.
After the mob event I went off to find this oldie while Mr ATLH did the virtual at the tower. I was joined by the team from WA and we signed the log together. Lovely to be meeting other cachers while in town for the mega and re-exploring my old home too.
Very excited to be here for my first Mega event from WA. Started early this morning to pick up meme28 and burns345 from the airport. They hit the ground running from an overnight flight straight out caching. My personal aim is to try and boost my numbers to hit my next milestone whilst here.Signing as WA5 and sometimes GeotrakkaMany thanks geodesy#5 for placing this hide for me to find and adding to my adventures. This will be my 7866 find.
We were a little early for the [Black Mountain Flash Mob](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCAJY03) event so while we waited, M finished his lunch and I headed over to find this oldie. Lovely scenery! I'll have to come back when I have some spare time to explore more!A favorite point for keeping this one alive for so long, thanks! Thanks for find #5832TNLN
Out and about after the Mob Event on Black mountain.A targeted cache for today.Caching with and signing as the group '7 for QLD' and having a great day.TFTCache geodesy#5
The Adelaide Leap Day Mega and Canberra Geobash gave us a great excuse for a road trip. This trip has shown us so many new and interesting places as weve chased LGAs, oldies, challenges, interesting D/T combinations, rarer cache types and favourites.Meeting up with friends old and new along the way, we sometimes cached together and sometimes alone but always had a great time. This morning we went for a hike around Black Mountain before attending a well attended event at the summit. Afterwards we borrowed a ladder from a friend and targeted some caches requiring it. The weather was perfect for being outside today and we enjoyed exploring the area cache by cache. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache and adding to our enjoyment.
Arriving early from WA for the GeoBash Mega, I caught up with Burns345 and geotrakka after a red eye flight to start caching Canberra. Logs signed as WA5.Cache found with no issues. Cheers
TFTC geodesy#5 your cache Geocache that we found today. After the event on Black Mountain we went out to find some caches. In particular this one had appeal as it was a 2001 cache. Good to grab the older caches.Find Count: 19234

Turns out this is one on my grid that I'm missing yay
We were doing the Black Mtn Ad Lab when I realised this old cache was here so we diverted to find it. Great to get another old cache thank you.
Thanks for the walk & discovery of this old cache. Thanks for maintaining & keeping this activity alive!
Nineth day of our trip and we have come to Canberra via the Rutherglen Mega, Sydney and Newcastle.
Very first stop was Black Mountain, but we were unaware that the Tower was closed. However it did mean that we had more time for this Oldie. Lots of people walking down the tower but no one seemed to care about us on the rocks "taking photos". Nice quick find with good coordinates. Shame the orginal log book is gone, I enjoy reading the old logs.
Thanks for the cache geodesy #5

Today was my last day in Canberra and I was picked up nice and early for a caching day with The Green Geckos. She had a plan of caches to collect and I was just following along. It did not matter where we went as they are all new to me, lol.
First was an early start and drive up to the Telstra tower. Here was a virtual and a couple of challenge caches and around a ways was a whole series of challenge caches. We signed the logs where required and answered questions or took pics where required.
We meet up with the Domsky’s and walked a trail for a nice rainy walk. Then we proceeded to grab a few fun tree fishing or tree climbing caches. It was then a final event of Roddyc’s before a drive to the airport. An adventure lab and a virtual awaited me there. There is So much to see and do in Canberra.
