At last, found one of these.Just as well it's a good walk!Nice to see a plastic ammo can - should last well.
A late afternoon walk up Mt Manaia with rattll. Still puffing from the climb, I initially thought that GZ was a further 10 meters on. But then my GPS caught up, and rattll pointed out that I was standing directly above the container. All well in the container, log dry. Signed, and returned as found. Tftc!
Didn't spot the GZ on the way up but a previous cacher's image helped me find it on the way back down. The cache was very visible from the path so I tucked it in a little to make it a bit more discrete.TFTC!
A great day for a spectacular hike. The views are to die for.Log is too damp to write on.
Today two treecutters are making the path safe.
We managed to keep out of their way so far.

We are on our long-awaited journey around the world in 99 days. Second try after canceling in 2020.
Our third stop after Los Angeles and Hawaii is New Zealand.
This time was of course used to find some geocaches here.
Today we were on the way from Aukland to Paihia and while that time we were searching for the Traditional **Manaia Mania (Whangarei) (2001)**
Thank to the Hints and the good coordinates the little box was found quickly!
After signing the logbook there is a new smile on our geocaching map!
At least we would like to take this opportunity to thank Riser5 for creating and maintaining this very old Traditional.
Greetings from Nuermberg/Germany

#679 We did the track with Sneeuwitjie and Blikoor on on a beautiful, but very hot day! Quick find! TFTC
Day 4 of our Northland road trip, and the main focus today is Mt Manaia. A cache on the way in, and some others later in the day in town.
First find up the hill today.
I had the GPS at about +/- 11 metres, so had actually walked past it initially. RG72 made the find first.
All good here, decent size box. TFTC Riser5.

This and the virtual were the main reason for targeting this track today. I love getting the older caches that have stood the test of time.
Although I didn't find a lot of the other caches, this was a nice straight forward one.
I left a pet rock - a parrot.
Thanks for setting up this cache and thanks to those that help keeping it going.

Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit … we are now parked up in the Doc Uretiti Campsite … decided to drive through to explore a few areas out by the Whangarei Heads … thought it would be rude not to check out a few caches while here … never climbed Mt Manaia before, so this was going to be fun … this one turned out to be an easy find … pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally … TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #2,958 for us.
8000
With a milestone approaching I was thinking about a worthy cache, a couple other locations (eg Pinnacles, Mt Pirongia) were considered, but really there could only be one: Mt Manaia.
In November 2016 for gorbys 4000th milestone we arrived at the track start, only to find that it was fenced off, closed for an upgrade.
So today was the day, when at last I would get to visit the top, and find this old cache too (hidden 21 October 2001, so nearly 21 years old!)
The rain held off, and a couple of caches were found on the way up the track, so that the numbers would all match up to 8000.
Arriving at GZ the co-ords took us further up the track, so was initially searching near the wrong rock. With a bit of walking up and down, re-reading the cache page, and looking at the images, yeah the cache was found.
On opening there was about 2cm of water within, and the log book was saturated. Carefully I opened up the pages and wrote in our names. But it seemed too wet to return, so I got in contact with the CO, and it was agreed that the log book could be removed (it has now been given to the CO).
In its place is a pill bottle with waterproof paper, placed in the amo can hidden under the board walk. As to swag, there was none, but I was more than happy to be signing the log
A fun find and adventure, thanks peejay (and Riser5) for hiding this cache, and for keeping its history alive.
Time to get moving, we still need to make it to the top and the views!

A few weeks ago I asked rustynz where she wanted to have her 8000th milestone cache to land on. I knew it was coming up soon. She suggested among other caches Mnt Manaia in Whangarei. My ears pricked up… yes! That’s where we should go. Mnt Manaia was supposed to be the place my 4000th cache was meant to be back in 2016. But on the day, the track was under maintenance and so we had to plan somewhere else.
So once that plan was on the go, the ball really started rolling, supernanny suggested a weekend away there too, so I asked Nicholas (Riser5 master of the CITO) if he wanted to organise a CITO for us and we’d come up from Auckland to Whangarei and join him. Once he had a definite date, I booked myself in for 2 nights.
# Well, this is **Sharon's (rustynz) 8000th milestone cache**, whoo hoo, very cool. Thought this might have a view, but no, no view! We took a while to find this one, we were looking further up at a much larger rock by a corner, it was only when rusty pulled up an older foto did we realise where the cache was.
The contents are looking quite manky, so we signed in on both the old logbook (not the original though) and the new paper rusty brought along and rusty took away the manky one. Then the other Westies showed up as they were coming down and we chatted for a minute. It was really cold up here, and I'm in a t-shirt! So the others went down and me and rusty carried on up to the view.

Easy find, abit exposed when I found it but still hidden from muggles. TFTC
Easy find, thank you. I forgot to see if there were caches at the top, do I go back? Not today. Thank you!
The weather was grey and overcast with rain threatening, so we made an early start to climb Mount Mania. We had to wait for an elderly couple to carry on down the boardwalk before zooming in for a quick find here. TFTC
On our way from Mangawhai Heads to Paihia. We were supposed to be going to Tutukaka but the weather is about to turn pear shaped so we decided to hunker down for three days in Paihia to ride the storm out.
Making a pilgrimage up Mt Manaia to fill a missing month in our Jasmer.
And....this is the cache that we all seem to be chasing. Thanks for maintaining this Riser5. A quick find. I like finding ammo boxes. TFTC

I JUST CANNOT BELIEVE THAT WE FOUND A CACHE FROM 2001!! We loved this cache, such a lit find
All good here, both container and logbook are in good condition. We looked using the wrong boulder but it was an easy find once we were in the right spot.
Walked up here to get this old cache heading on to the top. Travelling around with Kiscardi. Cleaning up my old cache dates and some D/T spaces.
I lovely walk up here this afternoon.
I lovely walk up here this afternoon.
Touring around the North Island with NZ Bozzy to grab the TMTG caches. And also the oldies up here.
An awesome walk. Loved a cache every 200m or so. So we could have a break and catch our breath.
TFTC and maintaining these older caches. Really enjoyed finding this one

We decided on a walk up Mania to get the caches. Have not been up this way for awhile. Before they put in the boardwalk. Great to see the Kauri, and a great bit of exercise.
Spied this on the way up but there was a group of people coming down so decided go collect the the trip back down. TFTC

Cool little spot, cache is a little further down track than photo but read description for good hints for location
This really old cache was the principal target of my walk up here this afternoon. I arrived in Whangarei with about three hours to spare and as I haven’t been up here for over twenty years I decided to revisit and see what has changed. It sure is different! - much tamer now with all the wooden steps and boardwalks, and the very steep alternative direct route where you had to pull yourself up along a rope has gone. I think I enjoyed it more as it was but I’m sure most people wouldn’t agree with me . The cache was a nice quick find find and it was great to see a decent big container after all the other micros. Signed log, TFTC and thanks to Riser5 for maintaining it. Gets a favourite point, this is the sort of caching I like most.
We happened to reach here when there was a lull in the traffic of walkers and runners. I was puffing and panting, so I was pleased to get this TB to distract me from my lack of fitness! Cache signed and replaced. TFTC
Wow! A cracking cache hidden in a good position. And we’re nearly at the top too!!
Was getting pretty tired and sore at this point on the way up. Wasn't completely sure where this was so we stopped to have a look. Turned out we were literally right on top of it, so finding was quick. Dropped a TB off here as it seemed like a safe spot.
Good to find a good size cache. Really nice spot on the track. Very busy up here had to wait a bit to replace it. Tftc
Went out for a hike up Mt Manaia late this afternoon with my son to work off the Christmas dinners and the excessive eating that occurs at this time of the year. Even at 5.00p.m. it was still hot during the climb so we were glad to have the couple of canteens of water with us.
With the GPS not showing great accuracy we were relying on the hints to find the Mt Manaia caches. So glad that this cache had a great hint and it was good to find a reasonable size cache after so many micros caches. The mantis trackable was safely in the cache so we dropped the Jeep trackable that we had been carrying since our visit to Geocaching HQ in Seattle.

Quick find thanks to the clear instructions.
Picked up a trackable, will give it a short tour and drop it off in the South Island

This is the quickest cache we've ever had to grab... muggles were closing in fast lol.... ninja skills were a go today! Lol TFTC!
Fantastic to find such an old cache! And.....a decent size to pop an oversized tb in. Tftc!!
Wow, an old one! This cache is nearly an adult - almost age 18 years!
Thanks for placing and maintaining the cache in this beautiful spot.
Thanks for placing and maintaining the cache in this beautiful spot.
Awesome find! Not too hard to find as it seemed to be a quiet day on the track but could imagine this one being harder on busier days. TFTC!
Another cache found by the junior cachers - darthcacher1 and purply - while waiting for us to catch up. So good to find a cache of this size.
On one of my favourite mountains! A bit of a struggle with all the muggles around but found it. TFTC
On my way to the top I was happy about this excuse to stop . A realy great place. The view from the top was really worth the way up.
Found it on my way down... No easy job today - it's so busy... Thanks for the cache!
After the thunder and rain came for a walk up here. Good hint, nice big container . Enjoyed the hike. Moose TB dipped. TFTC. TM from N Wales
The weather was still not ideal, but we decided that as we are not made of sugar, we will last the trip! The main aim was Mt Manaia for the day. We set of nice and early, and maybe we should have waited until the afternoon when the clouds mostly lifted!! Great place to visit in any case! It has been on my radar for some time, but the weather never wanted us here. TFTC!!
We found this Cache on our way back to the carpark after spending some time at the top of Mt. Manaia.
Found this geeat container on our way up. This was the first find after I failed finding the other 5 before. And quite an old one too. Thanks to Riser5 for keeping this one alive.
After attending the Onerahi foreshore CITO, this morning and picking up the last of the OC caches as well afterward, I headed out to Manaia, to try and clear up the remaining green dots on my map here.
The carpark was absolutely full and there were even other cars parked on the roadside, so I wondered if I might have a problem with muggles on the track. There were certainly lots met who were heading back down, but luckily none at GZ when I got there. Fantastic new wooden boardwalk up here protecting the kauri. With the good hint, cache was quickly located, log signed and returned as found, before the next lot of muggles arrived, heading downward. Great to find such an old cache locally. TFTC

Some lovely kauri trees up here. DOC's done a great job building the boardwalk to protect them. These new steps were much easier to manage than the old ones. Nice to see such a large and old cache up here. Thanks for maintaining this cache Nick
We found this cache on our climb to Mt Manaia, which was quite a nice workout!
Thanks so much for hiding it!

I'm travelling around NZ for 7 weeks, using geocaching as my travel-planner. I was so lucky to be offered to stay overnight with thegreatauk and his mom, and that also meant that I could go crazy geocaching with thegreatauk. We had a big day today, we left the house at 6.45am and came back 10.45pm. We started off with the Tiger-caches, then we walked up to Mt Manaia and finished off with the SpotX. We had plans to go to Peach Cove and Eagle Rock as well, but we didn't have the time (or energy) for that. A great day with lots of beautiful scenery and caches.
About this cache:
This one was the main reason for sweating our way up here. I needed this cache to fill out my hidden month-grid. Beautiful container and a quick find. Thank you for maintaining this cache.

Out for a full days geocaching in the heads trying to get as many caches as possible leaving early coming back late but having a great day out doing urquharts bay/Smugglers cove and Mt Manaia was great. A few DNF's but mainly finding the caches. Thanks to all the cache owners for placing caches to find. Really good to get such an old cache as it had been on the to do list for a while. took TB. TFTC.
A really cool walk with a stunning view! Unfortunately just found two caches of this series, but I was glad to get this old one here!
