#11,760. I was over in the Wairarapa on a work trip. I was aware this one had been found last year. So stopped to have a look for it. After searching in a couple of wrong spots I soon located the cache. Still the original skindo pottle and logbook. Thanks skindo for highlighting the memorial to a sad event from a 100+ years ago.
Thanks for bringing us to this interesting memorial skindo. Intriguing having a stile over the tiny fence.
Paused to pay our respects - just about the only cache I spotted first today! Thanks Skindo for letting us know about such an interesting location.
What a sad story. Thanks for bringing us to this spot. We paid our respects before finding the cache. TFTC Skindo!
Another road trip to the Wairarapa, this time to pick up caches for the Mystery at the Museum. I headed out to Cape Palliser as I haven't been out this way for a few years - before I started geocaching so there's plenty for me to get.
I wasn't sure about my chances of finding this one, given that it's been over four years since it was last found, but I dutifully had a look and was pleasantly surprised to spot the container almost right away, and still in great condition, with the log still nice and dry. Signed and replaced - quite a desolate area around here. TFTC

Team effort to find this one in the dark with LNM1961 and her husband. As LNM1961's husand moved the torch I saw flash of plastic -the cache. All aok. Now have to hunt for more information about the shipwreck. TFTC.
Found with hubby and ETHNZ. A team effort as found in the dark with the torch hitting a hint of plastic. TFTC
Unfortunately this one appears to have gone missing - I had a good hunt around, and looked in the grass nearby in case it had blown out a bit. Alas - no joy.
Quick find while on a caching trip in the area

A fascinating story in a very interesting part of the country. Thanks for bringing us here!
A dash out to Cape Palliser and back. This was find number 11 for the day. It is amazing what little bits of history are found in the middle of nowhere. Cache quickly found and signed. TFTC.
Found on a >41 hour non-stop geo roadtrip from Wellington to Auckland via Cape Palliser and a whole bunch of skinny winding Wairarapa roads, in the esteemed company of slieschke, mike-miss and cretti. We picked up our rental car, dubbed the Idiot Box, and assumed our new identity as Team CRT, shortly after 8am at Wellington Airport and headed north.
We first headed to Porirua Harbour to take on the resident Kiwi geo art trail before heading over to the southern Wairarapa and Cape Palliser where we visited the light house at about midnight and tried our best to avoid seals while searching for a few caches along the southern most shore line of the North Island.
We headed up past Greytown and Carterton, focussing on caching areas west of SH2 this trip. There were some highlight caches, particularly around Carterton (I think) and some way up in the hills looking over the whole area from Masterton to Martinborough.
It was daylight again by the time we hit Masterton and we decided to hit fast forward and skip a planned area (will just have to come back again!) and shot through to Palmerston North where we got back into the swing of things.
We took the back-road up to Mangaweka, discovering some really fanstastic little places along the way, like a picnic area and waterfall way down in a canyon, and then we continued via Taihape, across and up through Owhango, to get some really old caches, and then north through Te Awamutu and back to Auckland to drop off the Idiot Box at the airport.
And of course, despite it then being after 1am on Monday morning, and raining kinda heavily, slieschke and I couldn't resist driving over to the North Shore for an FTF on a cache published earlier in the evening.
Thanks to all the cache owners along the way, even if we couldn't find your cache - all part of the adventure! Sorry for the copy/paste log, but just too many caches to remember *all* of them individually. TFTC!!!

Found in the company of Cretti, funkymunkyzone and mike-miss on a crazy Wellington to Auckland road trip in the idiot box. We traveled via the Kiwi GeoTrail in Porirua, the Wairarapa including Cape Palliser, the Manawatu, and back to Auckland via the western side of the Central Plateau. Signed as Team CRT. Despite very little sleep the weekend was a blast!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Team CRT - traveling in The IdiotBox - For the first time, I have joined in with the mad crew of: FunkyMonkeyZone, Slieschke and Mike-Miss in a mad 40 hr caching drive from Wellington back to Auckland.
We're into hour 13.
Find #781. Thanks for the cache. 30/08/2014 21:05

A plan was hatched for yet another extreme, fly down, drive back caching weekend from Wellington to Auckland. This time, Cretti and slieschke joined in on what turned out to be another epic road trip with myself and funkymunkyzone (our third trip this year).
We all met up at Wellington Saturday morning as i ended up being on an earlier flight to the rest of the crew. Jumped in our rental which happened to be a Ssangyong SUV this time round and headed straight to Porirua Harbour to hit the Kiwi GeoTrail. From there on, we zig zagged our way through Wiararapa to Cape Palliser, back up through Martinborough, Masterton, Ekatahuna, Pahiatua, Palmerston North, Taihape, Te Awamutu and back home to Auckland in the early hours of Monday morning.
To save time and log space, we signed the logs as "Team CRT" travelling in the idiot box for the weekend. Lots of laughs were had over our 1500km+ / 41 hour road trip which consisted mainly of narrow gravel roads, some of which had spectacular scenery and views. Sorry for the copy/paste logs as its now all abit of a blur having only a few short naps in between. Many thanks to all the cache owners who have placed caches for us to find on another epic little adventure. TFTC!

Making a strong start to our winter caching in 2014, we hope.
This one on the way to a Wairarapa day's run to Palliser.
Enjoyed the history on this one. Thanks.
Straightforward find; cache in order, log signed, then safely re-hidden.
TFTC found with team cacher Sweet P too
The Turtle strikes again!

Were in the area taken photo's, did not have the GPS with me, but said to the wife there has to be a cache there, and found it in the first place I checked. - Thanks Bitsprayer
Nice to stop at a historic place during our trip. Sad to see how many lives are lost at sea. TFTC
Thank you, skindo, for placing this and the many other caches along here (and the rest of the Wairarapa!).
I accidentally drove past here but found the story so interesting that I turned & drove back. On a blustery & damp day one can easily image the conditions in which these poor folk perished.

Heading for Wellington after a forced night camping out near Cape Palliser. After being rescued I continued my caching mission finding the caches I'd passed yesterday getting to the Cape. Another quick find here. Interesting history. TFTC.

It has been interesting to learn of the local history with the various caches. Have driven by this spot many times and never noticed. Cache in good order and log dry. TFTC and many thanks for the history.
Quick find in an area we had not visited previously but glad we made the effort on such a gorgeous last day of the 2013 caching year.
What a great area to spend New Years eve, wine is already in the fridge TFTC.

Found on a motorcycle ride to explore the area. What a beautiful memorial to those poor souls with the flowers in full bloom. This must have been a bleak and pretty deserted area when the disaster happened. TFTC
Found with Edvern and Tramper Ted on Geocaching weekend in Cape Palliser. TFTC

An interesting history, and you can imagine the wild seas at times although day it was very calm. TFTC
Found during an enjoyable stay at Palliser Bay for the weekend. Thanks for inviting us to stop at this monument with its interesting, but sad history.
We visited this cache on our return after visiting Cape Palliser. An easy park and grab with a sad story. Thanks for the box!

Almost had enough caching for the day and driver getting sick of stopping, but thanks for placing all your caches along this coast line.
Found with KK33NZ on a caching run dow Featherston to Palliser Bay coast. Poignant reminder. TFTC Skindo!
Enjoyed the write-up on this one, and a poignant, but somewhat small memorial. I guess there were quite a number of ships wrecked on the southern coast in the 'old days'.
Thanks for the history. Yet another site you would miss if geocaching wasn't bringing you here.
TFTC! Dropped off a 'Street Shark' TB. Seemed a good place next to the ocean.

#3713. A fitting memorial. Fortunately, today was sunny and relatively calm. Quick find. TNLNSL. TFTC.
Moving back up north too windy down here for the caravan. Stopped for some caches on the way back. TFTC.
One of Rala's parent's cats is called Suleika, so we had to stop. This place is in a wonderful setting, although the "reason" is not so wonderful.

Day 6 of the trip home to Christchurch, around Martinborough. A quick stop on the way to the cape. Thanks for the hide.
Another interesting snippet of history that I have learnt through geocaching.
Cache took a few minutes to find - I initially looked int he correct place, but couldn't find it (didn't want to get my clothes wet by the long grass) so looked elsewhere and StreetWalker eventually found the cache.

Stopped here thinking it was a quick roadside and found the grave. Very interesting piece of history. Thanks for the quick stop. Did with Mycro Man
Doing a run along the coast today. Beautiful calm sea and sunny weather. A quick find. TFTC
A quick find in the first place I looked. A sad reminder of days gone past. It certainly is "big sky country" around here. Just magnificent. TNLN SL TFTC
Thanks for the interesting information about an event I had previously had no knowledge of. It seems to me that the memorial is rather inadequate for such a tragic occurrence.
Find #1149. Continuing to journey along to Cape Palliser. Yet another shipwreck site along the Wairarapa coast - we've visited alot of them now... the coast really is quite literally littered with them. This must be one of the older ones however, and the weather was poles apart from what the crewmembers of the ship must of experienced, today it was as flat as glass. It looks like it's been a while since someone came out and maintained this spot. Thanks skindo for notifying us of this interesting piece of history. SL TFTC.
Superbly researched information making the cache so much more meaningful. Great work skindo.
Quick find on another caching day here after staying the night in Greytown. Interesting piece of history. NINO TFTC
Found on bit of a clean up tour of the Wairarapa. An interesting little memorial. Great spot for a cache.

A quick find on the way to Cape Palliser this afternoon. I didn't know about this monument, thanks for bringing me here. Signed log, TFTC!
Interesting bit of history! Well spotted - we wouldn't have seen it in the dark otherwise Cheers Gav [7876]
Found this cache on my way from Cape Palliser today. Interesting spot. TFTC. Sherlock Hood.
#671. Thanks for the piece of history in another one of those spots you drive past without knowing it was there. Cache quickly found, TNLNSL, TFTC.
