Enjoyable bike ride and great views. TFTC

A great day for a walk to the top of Mount McDonald. Canberra is brilliant in the middle of winter when it is a still and sunny day, definitely much better than walking in the middle of summer with heat and bush flies.
The views from the top were 360° all around us, and after stopping at the trig station, we came to find this one.
All was dry and in good order, and we have added our name to the log for this older Hide.
Thanks 2 Leg Drive

#4088 Great to visit a place I’ve never been before and without caching most likely never would have.
While not a massive mountain to climb, the view back over Canberra is impressive.
Up we went, past the trig and onto GZ. Suddenly there it was. Knelt down to retrieve the cache and started to open up to get to the log. Before I knew it I had a huntsman in my crotch that required a quick flick to move on.
T’was an unexpected shock but both parties moved on alive and well. Thanks 2 Leg Drive for this adventure, but not so much the arachnid experience.

Nice afternoon for a wander around the bush, got stormed on half way through but the misty views and sunset afterwards were worth it.

Found with my mates Amr and Harry on a little hike up McDonald. This was my first time up this mountain/hill despite living in Canberra all my life and extensively exploring the Cotter. A pretty easy walk following the fire trail with lovely views along the way. Reached the old fire tower and had a picnic with strawberries and muffins overlooking the Brindabellas. Soon found the cache but struggled to open the container - it's quite stiff but got there in the end.

Thanks for taking us up here 2 Leg Drive.

Nice find. Although the hairy 8 legged guard ️ in the box was a little startling (he did scurry away for piece of mind of future cache hunters).

Cache 6208 on 7 Jun 2020.

An early morning start with TikvaNZ, Fox in Jox and Noikmeister to find a new cache in this neck of the woods, which was successful. Then we decided to carry on a a grab a few more since we were up here anyway! I found a total of 10 caches this morning, 8 of them up on Mount MacDonald. Noikmeister had already found all of these ones, but was happy to walk with us and exercise Kaleb the geohound at the same time.

Second find of the morning. This was a quick find for me - the only one of the group who had not found it. I liked the protective case and paint work! Also good to stop for a few minutes once at the top to catch my breath.

Thanks 2 Leg Drive for the cache and the fun!

Tankengine and I wanted to come out this way to pick up a couple of new caches and check on a couple that Tankengine owns too.

Luckily from me this meant a good number of finds that I don’t have and it’s always nice to be able to find caches Tankengine hasn’t got too.

This cache: After parking down the bottom on the side of the road we walked up to another cache before then heading all the way to top for this one.

It is a walk I have wanted to do for a while (but also dreaded it a little too).

But today was a lovely day and the walk was good. As we reached the top a group of over 60yr olds were hiking up too. We greeted each and made some small talk.

When asked what we were doing we answered “a scavenger hunt”.

One gentleman said “Oh is that different from geocaching?!”

“Nope, that’s exactly what we are doing” we admitted.

Then one lady pointed to this cache and said she remembered coming here with a friend who cached. She was surprised this was still here.

Awesome spot and awesome container. Tftc 2 Leg Drive!!!

**Today:**

Mount McDonald seemed like a good location for today's exercise / hike ! I asked DSD if he wanted to join me, and despite already hiking this mountain before he also was keen to get out of the house for the afternoon!

Managed to find 5 caches up here today, with no DNFS! Saw a couple of other people near the trig station at the top, but apart from that it was fairly quiet on the hill Smile

**This Cache:**

The main target for today's hike, the cache ontop of Mount McDonald itself!
Thanks 2 Leg Drive for the placement, I was intrigued by the unique container it was hidden in, took a little bit of force to get it out as well!
All in great condition though and ready for the next finder

I have visited this spot before. I can't understand why I didn't find it last time since I almost stood on it while taking photos. But the views are so good, it was worth the second visit to get this cache. TFTC

After several weeks cooped up 'working from home', I needed to get out and get caching. I ask Aquilus1 if she is available, and sure enough she is. Trying to find a days caching that we both want to target, especially while Namadji is closed, was a little difficult, but we settled on Uriarra where Aquilus1 was missing about half the caches, and I was missing all but one.

So, which ones to target? We decided on ALL. OF. THEM. At least that was easy.

So we started with the 'west' loop first, which included a dirty great big hill, part way down and then back again. Very pleased to also pick up three puzzles long solved.

On our return to the car, no having suffered enough punishment yet, we then went and did the 'east' loop. It involved more down and then up.... but at least it was a long, sort of relaxing (if we ignored the ankle/feeat/leg pain) descent back to the car.

All caches found, though some took longer than others. Sorry for the generic log, we did quite a few!

When GreyHams asked if I wanted to join him for a bit of caching, I was indeed keen and also looking forward to get out for some fresh air and exercise. It ended up being a lovely day to be out in the area, and we sure got a lot of fresh air and a huge amount of exercise!!!

There were two close by but different sections we were looking at targeting, a few caches I had previously found but both sections held ones we both needed. Which ones do we decide to do... yes, ALL. OF. THEM!

Provided for a lot of walking, we got a lot of steps in but it is a nice area and still quite green after the rains from a while ago so made for a nice day as we walked the trails. The order for the day worked out well with the big hills tackled first and after our lunch of champions we moved across to the second area and once back up to the flat levels behind the village, much easier going to end the day on.

All caches were easily found but the one which took a lot longer hidden well but luckily spotted for the find. Thank you for your cache which led to an enjoyable day out! Brilliant views from here!!!

I needed to get out on a walk despite the heat & the crapload of bushfire smoke blanketing Canberra. Headed out with a mate, parking at Uriarra Village, crossing the horse paddocks, then following the powerlines through the pine forest. A quick zigzag led to the top, with some great views of smoke. We wondered what the metal thing was, and why there was a huge pile of rocks. After find 1660, it was time to wander down and return via a longer route...

I've had my eye on this hill for a while. I've driven around it a few times. I've looked at it from the east several times. Knowing that there was a cache up the top made me climb up. It was a slow climb because I was a little sore, but I got to the peak and found the geocache shortly afterwards. The other container would make a good one for a letterbox hybrid cache, I reckon.
After this cache, I headed down the the relatively new TE cache, Maca's Mate.
While out walking this morning I saw a black-faced cuckoo shrike, a wedge-tailed eagle, and what I suspect was a nankeen kestrel. A few skinks appeared as the day warmed up.
Thanks for the cache, 2 Leg Drive!

G'Day My Fellow Geocacher,

How are you doing on this fine day? I’m DARKSIDEDAN aka Daniel from Canberra, Australia and I have had the pleasure of finding your Geocache during my travels as a Geocacher. This cache was an easy find. I signed the logbook either Darksidedan or Darkside or DSD.

Your cache was found in good condition with plenty of room in the logbook

I love discovering Geocaches, Trackable items and collecting Pathtags. I have added your cache to my growing list of “Found It” logs. I hope that you enjoy Geocaching as much as I do. For me geocaching is a way of life. When I am not Geocaching, I am thinking of Geocaching. I would like to say a very big than you for placing your geocache and for maintaining it for the Geocaching Community. In 2019, I won the right to place a Virtual 2.0 Cache from Geocaching.com, but I have not placed it yet. I am just trying to find somewhere that is worthy of a Virtual Cache.

Here is a little information about me. I have been geocaching since 2015. At the time of finding this cache I have over 5600 finds plus 340 hides. I am the creator of the “Duck Dip” Lab Cache that won 2nd Place for the Australian Capital Territory in the State Vs State - Battle of the Lab Caches at the OzGeoMuster - The Gong Mega 2019 in Wollongong, Australia.

Now let’s talk Pathtags. Currently I have over 4600 Pathtags in my collection plus about 500 Etagz. I currently have two of my own Pathtags (45762 & 46950) with another one in the works.
**********************************************************************
I have included with my Found It log an Original and One of a Kind, Geocaching poem that I have written. I hope that everyone who reads it gets some enjoyment out of it.

Geocache Poem by DARKSIDEDAN

My endless search goes on and on
Looking for treasures of every kind
Always chasing just one more find
Putting past DNF’s out of my mind
I step out into the world outside,
Seeking what is hidden from me
What size, shape or form will it be?
Only time will tell, I can’t wait to see
Will I find my prize at the end?
I will search in the failing light and cold
Filling with despair having looked everywhere
Where is this thing that gives my life pleasure?
Looking all around from every angle
I read the logs and check the hint
I curse out loud as I walk in circles
Screaming the bloody thing it not there
As time flies by and I fail to see,
Never once stopping to realize
It always been there before my eyes
No need for sorrow, there’s the Geocache.

I am currently writing very detailed logs because of a challenge provided by Project-GC called "The Author". This Badge challenges geocachers to write logs with an average length of more than one hundred words per log. As of the 14th August 2019 my average Found It log is 125 words per log. I would like to get all my logs up to more than 200 words per log but I will have to wait and see how I go. Currently I am just trying to get my average up by finding and logging as many geocaches as I can. My apologies to anyone who finds my lengthy logs tedious but it is the only way that I can strive to attain the highest level with this challenge. After more than 5,800 geocaches (which includes all cache finds up and including this cache, I am now entertaining the possibility that I might be able to achieve my task very soon. Progress has been better than anticipated.

A CBC trip round and about Cotter Dam specifically to invite muggles to find caches for me Wink. TFTC.

28-Apr-19
Out early on a clearing Sunday morning to finish off the Back of Cotter trail, complete the Village People trail and to summit Mt McDonald, collecting as many caches located along the way.

A few muggles out walking their dogs, the usual hoards of kangaroos and the odd horse grazing away. Some good hides, one I’ll just have to return to find and another that looked to be looooooong gone. Fine views on the way up Mt McDonald back down to the dam and beyond, as well as across to the South from the summit. With limited time for today’s adventure had to leave a few caches closer to the water for next time. Headed then directly down to Brindabella Road for the quick(er than back the way I came) hike back to the geomobile.

Thanks to all the CO’s for placing AND maintaining their hides. Apologies for the generic log, any specific, important or casual observations added at the end. I will be back, sooner rather than later. TNLNSL TFTC

Found at 12:12 PM GAFF1 in the company of noikmeister and DogboyOz .
Set up our caravan at the Hagan's and then we quickly worked out a tour to do on our bikes. A two hour route was worked out which ended up taking 2.5 hours.
Another fantastic view from here.
Thanks 2 Leg Drive

I couldn’t tell you how many time we have slingshotted around this large gravitational mass and have wanted to do more than a flyby.
So today was a mission to Old Maca!
Overcoming the gravity was a challenge, but nothing could stop us, 3,2...1 touchdown !

Loved the cache container and it provided a nice little field puzzle for a moment. Log signed and it was time to find my inner monkey and against my better judgement climbed what I assume was part of the old fire station or collimation tower. Spotted the fibre optic cable markers along the way - wonder if it serves Uriarra village, or now lays dark and dormant ?

Sorry N that it has taken us so long to make the trip, amazing views, could see the white tops of the antennas at TID and it was something pretty special.

TFTC and a Fav of course !

I've been wanting to come up here for a while. Today was a nice day with the breeze so did the walk. Cache found quickly and all OK. Interesting outer container with a DB25 (or is it a DB37) cutout. For some reason I didn't notice some of the other nearby caches, so I'll have to come back!

Thanks,

After finding the village series and the new 'uneventful cache' just down the road it was up the last hill to old maccas. A short uphill walk revealed some of the best 360 deg views I've seen so finding a cache turned out to be but a bonus, the view being the real find. Luckily only cachers get to see this landscape in all its beauty, plus the local wildlife. Tftc

I was very keen to get back to the cotter dam and it's nice hikes and trails since we moved back and finally got a chance today. I had only about two hours at location but it was mesmerizing as always. Had a great walk and found 4 great caches among other things.

My final goal for the day. I had been twice in the area before in 2012 and 2015 but never managed to make it up here. Today I did and that was very satisfying. Found a different nice way back down to the car park, will get around to show that to others some time soon Wink.

A cool cache container Smile.

Thanks for the cache 2 Leg Drive.

What a great hike!

15-Jul-17
Out with BonEm on a caching run around the Cotter.
This one was our main goal for today.
We really enjoyed the hike in and the views were sensational.
I cannot believe, that a cache that is 7 years old only had 40 finds!!
The Walking track from the carpark was really easy, and the adjoining fire-trail, was quite steep, but the views just got better and better.

The cache container was easily found and in good condition.
We had a sneaky celebrational shot, which was well received.

Thanks 2 Leg Drive for the hide, the views and the excuse to hike this trail.
I will come back and do this again, but on my MTB, for some hill-climbing training!

Another trip with Lpud exploring the cotter. Such a beautiful place. We had to come back for this one and the hiking trail up which is also rideable. Nice. Lpud was a legend all day long and after doing this cache surprised me by pulling out a hip flask and cups. What more could a girl ask for? Absolutely nothing. Gets a favourite from me. TFTC

Out with Fox in Jox for a shorter Saturday morning excursion than usual considering the predicted heat. We did this while do the Village People series by bike - managed to get all the way up without walking. Easily spotted once at GZ. We then took a few moments to admire the views, before enjoying the ride back down. TFTC.

Out with TikvaNZ for an early morning CBB (caching by bike), before the day gets to 41 degrees. Decided to switch on the climbing gears during our completion of the Village People Series. Nice ride up. Soon found the container - brings back computing memories. As I opened up the outer container, out came a furry cache guardian. Gave me a bit of a startle, but it and I both happily went our separate ways!! Admired the view, before descending. It's been a few years since I was up here last - still nice scenery, this time with a bigger dam. TFTC 2LD

Fabulous views from the top, a true 360 over the region. The walk is not too onerous, especially on a mild, sunny spring morning. Appreciated the trig, and the cairn and the occasional roo. Wattle in full throttle, plus the purple of the hardenbergia, clear blue skies - magical. TFTC.

A beautiful day to be out in the bush on a walk with Brindabella Bushwalkers and geocaching was the cream for the day. The view from Mt McDonald was superb and the warmth of the sun was such that I could have lingered over lunch.
This cache was a straightforward find. Thank you 2 Leg Drive for this cache.

Sunday 17 June 2016 - another glorious winter's day in the mid teens with a brilliant blue sky after a minus 1 start and then fog setting in until late morning. This mid morning fog made for a misty crisp bike ride, and then a very warm 5km/2hr walk in the 'bush'. Found 9 caches of which a favourite point goes to the Mt McDonald cache as these lure me up, up and up to improve my fitness and provide a feast for the eyes with all the good views. BTW: great to see the new Cotter Dam overflowing today. All quick and easy finds. Thx p2p. TFTC.

10487. One of several finds on a nice Easter Sunday caching run down the Cotter area.

After the event SDL and I knocked off a few Tankengine caches, then after I dropped SDL back at his car I still had heaps of time up my sleeves so I headed up this hill for 4 caches and 2 Trigs. Nice stroll up to the top via two trigs. once at GZ the interesting cache container was found !! Signed, returned, and I walked around a while enjoying the views before heading back down again.

Thanks 2 Leg drive - nice to knock an older cache off my list !

TNLN - TFTC !!

I was out for a 15km walk with Walking for Pleasure. I haven't been here previously and when I got to top of Mt McDonald I saw the trig & thought - whenever there is a hilltop there is bound to be a cache (not just the GCA trig cache) - and sure enough, when I pulled out my phone I discovered one only 22m away from where I was standing. Fortunately the other walkers were content to take in the view while I scurried off to find the cache. A nice easy find, so it didn't take long at all. Also an interesting container. Swapped a pathtag for a small mouse - and visited several trackables in my possession. TFTC - great spot for one!

25-Jul-15
Awesome walk. Even better when there is a cache up the top!

19-Jul-15
A nice walk up that kept the heart pumping. More amazing views from the top, including to some snow-capped peaks behind Tidbinbilla. Black Mountain tower was stark again the horizon and Canberra suburbs were clearly visible - no lack of visibility today. We ooh'd and aah'd for a while, and climbed the remnant structure of course, before finding the cache. This deserves many more visitors than it gets. A great hike and a great cache. Thanks 2 Leg Drive Big Grin

Out on another adventure in the Cotter on yet another glorious winters day. After finding most of the other caches in this area, I made the climb up the mountain to find this one. What a great spot. Thanks 2 Leg Drive.

I've been craving long walks and hills lately, so this one was calling my name. The weather was a bit hotter than I expected and I was grateful I packed extra water. Loved the climb, although I did crave those pre 2003 trees for shelter but I had great views the whole way without those trees! Stopped at Cotter Views on the way up for a cache, a rest and a big drink. Didn't see a single person or any bit of wildlife today. Guess they all had plans to stay cool. Found the cache hiding nicely in it's hiding place. No cache guardians either, thankfully! I looked around the area, took some photos and then headed back down to the car in half the time it took coming up. Thanks for bringing me up here 2 Leg Drive, and TFTC!

A walk around Cotter Dam and the North Bullen Range to-day. About 16 kilometres of walking, about a dozen caches found and 2 DNFs.
There is a nice big huntsman spider that has taken up residency in the cache. If I can figure out how to download from my camera I will post a photo in the gallery.
After finding the cache I headed down, after 15 minutes I had a thought, where are my glasses, in my pack! After 5 minutes more I decided it would be best to confirm they were in my pack. Damn they are not, back up to the cache to collect them.
TFTC.

Quiet a nice day , even warm, looking around for a place to take geodog for a walk and decide walking up a hill/Mt sure, why not, next problem where to start, decided when in double take the shortess path ,so found a intersection a bit of 400m from GZ and made a beeline to the summit, it was a bit trickly closer to the top as it was a bit slipery and hard to get a good foot hold in the dirt but no real biggie but more of a problem coming down though.
Anyway got to the top and was surprised to find I had 3G mobile coverage.. I might submit a Portal too while I'm here..
nice one 2Leg but 4 Legs would have made it easier getting up here.

05-Oct-13
This definetly needs more visitors, it is not a hard walk, there is a new hiking trail that joins the firetrail. I might come back and hide something near the other lookout, maybe that will entice a few more people. Great views and everything is looking so green. I might blog this trip if the photos turned out. Favourite Point from me

A final find as we headed home from a day out in the mountains. Holey cow, was it hot by now and the glare was almost overwhelming. So we trudged up here with some determination - not a long walk but the heat made it tough. Great views up the top though. Thanks 2 Leg Drive.

29-Jan-12
Well worth the wander up (probably not while its 30 degrees though).

Excellent wrap-around views to be had, you can almost take in all of metro Canberra from here.

Thanks for the cache 2 Leg Drive, nice one.

5251. [font=Century Gothic][green]Last find on a top day out with Mrs Winglen (thank you for taking on the driving duties) and Zsazsa7. I mustn't have drunk enough water 'cause at times heading up the steep bits in the heat my vision was going wavery. Maybe the wavering cooled me down as it soon cleared although it was relentlessly uphill. Finally got to the top and the views were fantastic - well worth the effort.

After dropping Ju at Camp Cottermouth for JOTA today, mr_roo and I headed up here for our first for the day. We opted for the longer gentler assent over the short sharp one and were rewarded with some magnificent views of the Dam construction.

Once at the top we made a nice easy find on the quite unique container and were soon on our way back down again. Thanks 2 Leg Drive for the cache.

Driving along the road towards this one, and who should I see standing on the side of the road checking out the overflowing Cotter Dam........one mtbikeroz.

Stop for a chat about the best approach for GZ and MBO kindly drove around, with me following, to the start of the old fire trail. Not one to miss an extra spot of exercise, he then decided to join me on the climb.

And what a climb. Just over 500 metres, but steep. Took around 25 minutes to arrive at the trig. Once the log was signed, it was a simple(?) matter of walking back down. A few slips and slides, but no problems and 15 mintues later we were back at the cars.

Thanks to 2 Leg Drive for another climb out this way, and thanks to MBO for the unexpected company and pointing out a couple of the local and not so local hills.

Only bummer about the walk was once again losing a pair of glasses. [:o)] [:o)] That makes 5 time lost with one being found for net loss of 4......in just over 3 years of caching. My optometrist loves me, but Mrs Sol is not so sure tonight.................SadSad

If anyone heads up the old fire trail towards GZ and you find a pair of black rimmed glass, I'd be greatful to get them back. Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

This was another cache that I was really looking forward to - fantastic views which I had seen last time I popped up here to grab the trig. At the time, I said to CT, you know we are crazy walking up here without a cache to plant because otherwise we will be back - and yes, here we are today.

Also took the shortest sharpest & steepest route up the old fire trail today.

Found with SecretSquirrel-BJC.

1 of 34 caches for the day.

We certainly knew the way up here, having already done the GCA trig. A bit hot and muggy today - we are so used to cold wind.

Took the shortest sharpest & steepest route up the old fire trail for the THIRD time. As always, a great view. Thanks.

Although I didn't have to contend with the weather conditions which Tankengine had last week, this was still a challenging ascent (not helped by a temporary directional error in the woods). However, once there, cache was quickly to hand, a short delay to work out how to open it and then time to sit and enjoy the wonderful views before descending. TNLN and TFTC

Wow that was an early morning *FTF* adventure! Arrived near the village, at the bottom of the mountain, and it was sleeting heavily! That’s OK, I thought, I have a jacket! So I headed off, it was 4 degrees. However, only about 200m into my hike, I started to turn around and head back. I was soaked already, the wind was freezing, and my ears were about to drop off! But then I remembered that I had a rain jacket with a hood in my backpack. So I put that on over my other (wet) jacket, at least it keep the wind off my ears! I also found a pair of gloves in there – ah, that was handy, I’ll have those also.

So still freezing and soaked, I continued on up the firetrail. After what seemed like an eternity, I was about half way, and I considered turning around again. It was getting rather silly - my pants were soaked thru, and my legs were so cold, I couldn’t feel them! But no, I decided I couldn’t let this old mountain beat me! Just at that moment, I’m not sure if I had reached a magical altitude, or the temperature was simply dropping, but the wind stopped, and the sleet turned into snow! It was magical, I forgot about the cold, and just enjoyed the spectacle. Mind you, kangaroos in the snow just don’t look right. Without the wind, it was now very pleasant. 20 minutes or so later, I reached the top, and low and behold it stopped snowing. I quickly took some photos, found a trig (bonus), and headed off to find the cache. What – another 100m down the other side! In the scrub and blackberries! Darn – oh well, off I go. Got to GZ, plenty of rocks to search, but after about 15 minutes, I decided it wasn’t here. At this moment 3 lucky factors came together, it wasn’t snowing, so I could get the phone out, there was reception up here, and I happened to have the number of the cache hider! – Oh, and the fourth piece of luck – he answered! OK, so I am in the wrong spot, and the cache is back up the top! OK, up I went, and with an added clue, I found it quickly. Hmmm – that is an interesting box.

By now the sun had actually come out, and the views started to reveal themselves – magic! Spent a while soaking it in, took some more pictures, and headed back to the car. Was all but dry by the time I got back. Thanks 2legdrive for a great adventure!

It looks like I made an error with the co ords of this cache. The last two digits of the easting co ord were transposed.

Nothing like a cacher out in the snow to discover the issue.
Thanks to Tankengines for finding the issue.

When I placed this cache. The walking track that I used in the past was closed due to the Nearby dam contruction work. This not really an issue. As I just went a bit further along the road and found another fire trail that works it's way to the top. Happy hunting.
