Making our way from further north gradually down south, we are spending a couple of days in the tent field area under the canvas. Finally, we have a day without rain, and so the canvas is dry. It is quite cold here after the hot Queensland temperatures over the last couple of weeks, however everything looks lush and green here at the moment. At GZ and around the area, we were exploring thunderbolts cave and then the World War II Tank Traps. Such an interesting area, and we are glad to have the opportunity to stop here for a couple of days. After having a look at the history of the tank traps and how they were constructed, we came to find the Geocache, which we found to be in good order. We have added our name to the log. Thanks Fangsoki and cussie bro for this piece of history you have highlighted. Domsky

Mr D (also now known as PommieJonny or PJ) wanted to go for a drive. I looked at the caching map looking for the more elusive little green dots that are in our DT allowance. We had a choice - either Boonah or Tenterfield. Quick flip of the coin and Tenterfield one. I was pleased with this, cos there were a number of caches on Mt Lindesay Road that we had not attempted last time we came down that way.I got to within 5 metres, on one side of some bushy things, then moved to the other side, and once again was within 5 metres. But could not penetrate the bushy things. Muggles galore~ Will return another day (possibly a week day)Interesting information about the Brisbane Line. Have seen the tank trap at Paddy's FlatThanks Fangoski for the hide and the funNB: if our Dunmowin stamp is on a log, that means that PJ was present.

I am once again staying near Stanthorpe over Easter with bushwalking friends of 40+ years including sausage3. After climbing Bald Rock this morning, I chose a couple of caches with high favourites to find on our return, including this one. I had downloaded this one to a list. It didnt take long with the help of the hint and all is good with the cache. Thanks for showing us this interesting piece of history. Tftc

Found with stairman1. We are heading home and traveled down a road we have never been. A lot of history here. Fascinating reading. Not sure how the generation of today would cope with what the men of war had to deal with. Unfortunately geodogs had to stay in the car while we searched. All good here. Have a favourite point from me. TFTC

Was this a Government initiative or a Local Defence Group (Dad’s Army) activity? According to Army Historians, this was never a decision made by the Govt but each Regional Militia took steps to protect their own areas. TFTC

Arrived at the parking and wandered down the gully. Read the signposts and absorbed the fascinating history. Pleased we are based in Brisbane and not any further North so perhaps will be safe in the event of a future threat. In saying that we live 1.2kms from the beach so maybe not! Haha. Loved the location and little known history. Cache found after a brief search. Leaving you a fave point.

28-Dec-22
Current infiltration of the coastline by ne'er do wells smuggling or illegally landing indicates how hard it is to protect a northern coastline largely uninhabited or very lightly inhabited. Pragmatic politicians probably realised this and were prepared to sacrifice the north but protect and defend their own little homes. Fortunately no invasion occurred so it is now all academic. The tank traps are an interesting concept. Was the idea developed in Australia or imported from overseas? Would the invaders have used small tanks, or would they have used bicycles like they did in Malaya?
Had a good look around where the Garmin thinks is GZ, but found nothing today, and with other tourist decided to abandon the search. TFTC anyway, fangsoki.

Little Swelling

A small town on The Sto Plains Line in betwen Hapley and Huddle that is a centre of the worm-breeding and worm-herding industries. (A necessary supporting industry to the dominant Cabbage-growing agrobusiness.) It hosts a shrine to Aniger, Goddess of things that get run over by carts, and has a wealth of local knowledge about recognising edible track-kill and the thousand and one recipes for turning Nature's inadvertant bounty into something nutritious. Aniger is worshipped here once a year on her feast-day. It is wise not to speculate on what went into the feast. Accomodation and non-wriggling drinks may be obtained at the Worm-Herder's Arms.

Seffnjarah and I hate crowds, so instead of heading north for Easter, we have planned a long weekend doing various short walks and collecting interesting caches, meandering south to Armidale and surrounds.

Having camped overnight at Bald Rock, the first goal today was to climb Bald Rock for sunrise. Now we are heading south and after a visit to Boonoo Boonoo Falls, we arrived here. I read the information boards with interest - just as well I did, since I couldn't imagine those traps stopping tanks, until I reading about their soft underbelly.

The traps continued up the hill a lot further than expected - where I found the cache in good condition. Always enjoy a cache with some interesting history. Many thanks Fangsoki

While on my way back from Tenterfield to find some high elevation caches to fulfil a challenge north of Brisbane, I stopped to find this cache along Mount Lindsay Road.

I always wonder why they think making these walls or traps out here to stop invading tanks where the countryside would do a good job with all these boulders lying around...

I seem to have taken the long way round to get to this cache but the hint helped locate this one quickly. SL then returned as found.

Found on 15 February 2022 at 4.46pm.

I had 2 caches highlighted to find along the road to Bald Rock. This was one of them. It sounded interesting. And it was. It must have taken a bit of work to sink those posts in! The water in the creek looked very inviting too. So good to see there is actually water out this way again. Last visit (to Girraween) everything was bone dry.

TFTC and info. Getting a fave point for pointing out this location. Thanks.

27/1/20 Find #3424
The CO, PPrime, Crew153 and I were spending the Australia Day long weekend in and around Dorrigo. This was our final day of our trip, and we were well on the home stretch.
Wanting to check the condition of the area post-fires, and knowing I hadn’t yet done this cache, a stop in here was a must. We were surprised to see the traps were barely affected by the fires, with just a little charring - we had expected them to have been completely destroyed. The area had certainly received quite the burning.
Time to search for the cache. It didn’t take long to make the find, and then notice all the rest of the traps even further up the hill - I can’t imagine how any tanks would be likely to be able to conquer that area, traps or not! It would have been interesting to go for a wander up the hill and see how many more traps there were, but with my migraine taking hold, the heat, and the end of the day nearing, we still had quite some travel to do.
Thanks for the cache Fangsoki (maintained by Fangsoki's cussie bro). A favourite point from me for this interesting location and the history here.

This was a really interesting spot to have a look around and read about the history behind it.

Why didn't they just move some of the big rocks around here into stategic positions?

Was driving by with the CO himself, and Crew153 - so a wee bit of history schooling for our day otherwise mostly in the car. And to drop off a Geocoin needing a new home for a bit.

I recall reading about the Brisbane Line concept during University-level Aussie History - although not on how effective it was expected to be (to replicate this from Gladstone to Adelaide is mind-boggling). It is an easy drive along the tarred road now, but suspect that might have been blocked back at the time.

The cache remains in excellent condition at an important spot for our history, and really exciting scenery all about. Thanks Fangsoki.

I was on a road trip with Pprime and Fangsoki and we stopped to check on this one. It was a maintenance visit for Fangsoki and as Pprime had found it previously he stayed at the car.

I found the cache easily and the cache was in good condition.

I am perplexed about the usefulness of this installation but I suppose the military boffins of the day had it as part of their strategy.

Thank Fangsoki and Cuss for showing me this historic spot and also to Petan for the extra history in your log.

So great to see a BIG cache! after logging our name we continued to climb a fair way then I decided that while the UP was fine on my knee, the DOWN would not be so I headed back to the car while the EmBem606 and Saint175 and Jet the Geodog continued to the top. I took some more photos for the album and they were down in a jiffy. All in good nick here!

With more than a passing interest in South East Queensland WW2 history, this site was on the must do to visit while we were in the area. As others who have logged this cache have commented... why here? The information brochure we picked up from the Stanthorpe Info Centre suggested that the idea of the tank trap was to force the tank upward revealing its 'soft belly' which had less armament than the tops or sides. You could then shoot at it with your pop guns. But again why here? Why not along the rail line though Stanthorpe? Or a beach landing on almost any of the isolated beaches on the North Coast? The reality is that by the time they got to this point in time the Japanese were seriously short of fuel.... there was no-way they could have set up a supply line to support tanks. No doubt just about all of the fuel reserves in SE Qld were mined thus able to be destroyed in the event of an invasion. Still, this area is a testament to the panic of the time.

The site of this cache raised interesting questions and down another rabbit hole of research I go.

Thank you for the cache.

01-Oct-18
At Thunderbolt’s Hideout cache we saw that there were some WW11 tank traps further up but we had also read there was another entrance further up that would put us closer to them.

We drove up further and thought this would be a cool spot to put out a cache. We scrambled through the car and found nothing that could possibly be a cache which led to the discussion that we should be more prepared in case we came across areas like this. We headed in to have a look and while Mr 4ando was checking it all out Mrs 4ando opened the app and what do you know, we couldn’t put a cache out here even if we were prepared, there’s one here!

Heading over where the GPS was putting us, it was easily spotted as it was right out in the open. We signed the log and tucked it back under and covered it up. Leaving a FP as we would of picked this place for a cache as well.

This was a VERY memorable cache... for a few reasons.
Memory 1: being excited to find a super cool location and enjoying exploring it.
Memory 2: finding the cache after going the wrong way a few times.
Memory 3: my friend trying to start the car after the lights had been left on... and failing to do so. Oops.
Memory 4: being relieved to find that we had reception here and calling NRMA... the phone dying part way through the call.
Memory 5: calling back on the other mobile and managing to communicate where we were, before finding out that it was unlikely they could get to us before 5pm.
Memory 6: Waiting on the side of the road near the car, seeing a Ute with two blokes slow down, stop and get out 15m from us, ignore/not hear me call out ‘Hi’, watching them check their load and get back in the car and drive off... leaving us two gals in our twenties on a random road at almost sunset beside a car that is clearly not being driven. CHIVALRY. IS. DEAD!
Memory 7: a lovely NRMA man pulling up and jump starting us just as it was starting to get dark and cold at 5pm He’s my favourite!
Hope you enjoyed the tale! In hindsight, it was hilarious! We will have to come back with a fully-charged battery and finish the trial Can’t wait

Loved the history of this place that we never heard about at school.

Have had a most enjoyable and tiring day fulfilling our aims and some. It was planned to climb up to the top of Bald Rock; down to the bottom of Basket Swamp Falls; up to Timbarra Lookout and throw in a few traditional caches along the way that had historical significance such as Thunderbolt's Hideout; The Brisbane Line and F111. We achieved all that and a couple more.
To all the COs and the maintenance teams, a huge thank you and pleaase forgive my logs - I'm rather tired.
All logs were signed as Smittengranny or SG depending on the sizeof, and space on the logs.
