A stunning day to be walking this track, a turquoise Rakaia River, spring green growth on the trees, birds singing, and a recent snow leaving the mountains capped with white. A walk well worth doing. TFTC!!
Most enjoyable walk to the site in glorious winter sun. Many thanks. Email will be sent with answers.
#14924. Lots of interesting geology on view on the walk here. The answer to 3) was soon gathered (and has since been emailed to the CO). We decided not to continue to "Canary anyone?" given that it was still some way off, it was hot, and there have been no finds this year (and a couple of DNFs). Thanks for all the caches along the walkway; we enjoyed our walk. TFTC.
Pity the signboard is gone as no doubt it would have been most informative. I hadn't realised that coal mining had occurred in the area- but the wagon signs at Glentunnel now give a hint!
StreetWalker has sent answers for both of us. Would have been interesting to carry on to the coal mines, but maybe on a cooler day! Thanks for bringing me here and TFTC.

Wasn't game to carry on further up the track to grab the last trad the wind is really blowing and in exposed places it is not easy to walk head on into it especially with a wet muddy track making things worse so turn back from here.
Thanks for bringing me here to see the amazing views and learn about our local area and some great history. Thanks.

Was hoping missing sign was by a bench but if so bench is also not present. Great spot. Answers sent. We had wondered about the "caves " earlier on so your notes are much appreciated. NINO TFTEC
Had a day trip to castle hill, lake Coleridge and surrounding. Really interesting place with a lot of nice features.
So far seen on this trip: Thailand and New Zealand.

After a semester abroad in New Zealand, I travel around the country with MMXX now. There are plenty of amazing spots to discover.
Thanks for placing a geocache here and sorry that I keep my logs short.

Ninalila and I went for a short walk along the Rakaia Gorge.
Of course we searched a few boxes and solved this earthcache at the same time.
The river is beautiful and the walk pretty easy with nice views, even if the weather is a bit cloudy and windy.
We were surprised to see some volcanic rocks here and we learned about the volcano
Thank you for the Earthcache

Nice walk with fefe.adrien on the track over the Rakaia river gorge. A lovely place to discover and quiet. The only sound was the bellbird songs.
Alluvial terraces are huge there.
Thank you for the discovery.

me and the boys went up the gorge a couple of weeks ago when it was all quiet at home but once on the track there was a holing norwester coming down the gorge so we only made it as far the earth cache , it was that strong we jumped the fence and walked back inside the paddock felt a lot safer, have to come back there's still two trads I couldn't find on a previous visit . a great walk on a calm day tftc
Great view. We just hiked to this point and than back to the car.
Thanks for showing.

JDScout and I headed out for a day adventure together. We decided to go along the Raikaia Gorge walkway and find a few caches, combining my caching interest and our walking interest.
I can't imagine where the sign was. This was our final cache of the day. The landscape feature was easy to spot but I needed Dr Google's help for question 4. I emailed the answers for JDScout and myself to the CO.

Great day for a walk luck with this weather - remember this walk when we get back to the uk tftc
Great day for a great walk!! It was raining on my way there so I got a bit doubtful about wanting to walk anywhere in such weather, but it turned out to be a marvelous day, well, the middle section of it anyway. Thanks for making me notice the features of the area!! TFTC!!
Today I went for a walk to Rakaia Gorge.
I had nice views and found a few caches. It's a perfect place for a Earthcache!

The brochure we looked at said this could be NZ's most scenic walk and it's certainly up there for us. The entrancingly turquoise water views are stunning. We enjoyed the time we spent here. TFTEC ridders76. Answers sent to the CO.
Today was a perfect Canterbury day for doing the Rakaia Gorge walkway and why not get an earthcache since its earthcache day, I'm up for some bling! After a pleasant stroll and a couple of other caches on the way we came to this spot which had obviously lost its sign. Took me a minute to figure out what the 3rd question was referring to but finally spotted it, how could I have missed it! Have emailed the answers to the last 2 questions. Thanks for the cache Ridders76!
I just loved this walk. My only regret is that we ran out of time to go further. I think that might have had something to do with spending too much time hunting for caches and birdwatching instead of walking thanks for bringing us here!
For us, the same as 1066.....a wonderful walk and views but no information board to answer the questions, although we could see the rock line tilted half way through 90. We have got a photo on a telephone but not sure how to get it onto this iPad thing....but a good cache, thanks.
Very happy and surprised that we all made the walk from the bridges to here and back without any serious complaining. Said hi to 1066 as they were walking in and we were on our return journey.
Quite a few people walking the track today. All in good condition except a small area of mud. We didn't make it around to the coal mines this time but hope to come back via Terrace Downs.
Was a good view of the upper valley from GZ which had the smooth curves as proof of glacial action.
Thanks for the earthcache I have been meaning to visit it for a while now.
I am including this walk as one of my rambles for http://coord.info/GC2XBA7

I visited this earthcache with Mum. It was a really nice sunny day for a walk.
This was my first ramble towards the challenge cache in Dunedin.
This was my first ramble towards the challenge cache in Dunedin.
Mum is always pointing out different rock formations to us so it was no surprise that she wanted to find an earthcache today. Was great watching the jetboats rushing past.
Thanks for the earthcache.
My first ramble for Ramblers Reward cache.

My first ramble for Ramblers Reward cache.
As I am the smallest I got to go first to set the pace. Mum kept having to tell me not to run, slow down and walk or I would run out of energy. But I didn't run out of energy at all. Some bits were a bit steep and I needed to hold on to someone's hand so I wouldn't slip over. I loved the colours in the water.
Mum pointed out the layering in the rocks to me. I wanted to keep walking around to the mines but Mum said maybe next time.

No sign there but interesting to see the river and surrounding area from here. Quite a walk for us and pleased to be heading home again. Awesome views. Thank you for the Earthcache. Great to learn about the geology of this area.
Strarting with the jet boat, dropping off and hiking the trail and visiting the cache on a beautiful sunny day.

We spent the morning participating in a 90 minute mini rogaine near Whitecliffs. Since we were 'close' to here it was a good opportunity to clean up the caches on this walkway. This was the fourth stop. The sign has seen better days so limited information collected while at GZ. TFTC.

Whole sign gone now. Took a photo as evidence of visiting the area. Nice view, enjoyed the hike. TFTC.
Looked, looked and looked again then an Aha moment. Earthcache!! Sign damaged and only 1/3rd remains so only question easily answered is diagonal strata opposite.
such an amazing spot, Cacheflyer sent answers for both of us. too bad the sign is half gone. made friends w/ some cows tftc
Wild Coin Cacher and I are on holiday with a campervan and this was one of our many hikes that we enjoyed. It was quite impressive to see the water flowing right after a big storm. Email sent. TFTC
What a lovely "wee" hike out to this cache. Today the winds were blowing at 40km/hr here - could barely stand at the sign to get the required info!
The hike here was lovely but cold due to the wind. I started the ascent at 2:30PM and about an hour in realized that the trail in the gorge proper would be dark well before "sunset". I gave it a quick run up to the cache and after seeing I had time took a more leisurely stroll back down.
Thanks for the cache! Answers sent.

Our plans to go further along the track than this were dashed by the weather, but we enjoyed finding out a little more about how the area was formed.
A fabulous morning on the Rakaia Walkway. Interesting geology and more native vegetation than remembered from a previous visit. Bellbirds, fantails and a kereru spotted. Love the picnic spot by the Terrace Downs sign. Questions answered and email sent.
Thank you for this cache

We enjoyed our walk along the Rakaia Gorge Walkway this morning, and stopped at the sign board to get the required information for this earthcache. An interesting explanation of the geology of the area and amazing views at this spot. Answers sent, thanks for the earthcache.
5050. On a three day geocaching trip around Mid-Canterbury. This was cache number fifteen on the first day. Tentatively logging this as a find until we get confirmation. Thanks, Rodney and Iris.
An interesting and educational earthcache on this walkway with great views of the river below. Shortly past here we met a fisherman from Glentunnel who said the fish weren’t biting today, and when this happens, he comes for a walk up here. TFTC

Plenty of water in the Rakaia as usual. The main reason for stopping was to find this earthcache and it was a lovely walk up in the 28C heat. It was a bonus finding a couple more along the track. Answers in the mail to the CO..

Together with my family on a vacation trip to New Zealand. Starting at Auckland airport on transfer to Christchurch we went for a roundtrip exploring the south island. This was one of many caches we found while visiting so many nice and interesting places thanks to all the caches why I want to send a thank you to all CO for the work spent.

Logged with permission. A wonderful walk to the GZ in the right conditions. On this particular day it was blowing a voracious Nor Wester. Went as far as the Cache site with my son Jono enjoying the views and turned around when the terrain got more exposed. Will return one day to complete the track. TFTC
Logged with permission. We stopped off at the Gorge to do the walk up to the earth cache and picked Bryan's Ferry, Rakaia Pine Twin Bridges, Stay in Rakaia Gorgea and Rakaia Lookout Lookout.
We had a great walk even if a little wet under foot. The river was in full flow as the snow continued to melt so the pool near the bridge was flooded. Nice views at various spots. The GPSr was a little wayward under the trees for Twin Bridges and we turned off a little too early on seeing rocks that match the hint plus a trail we followed up this false path before realising it was not GZ. At one stage a group of cows came over to either help or look on as we searched for Rakaia Lookout Lookout. TFTC's

#3271 Logged with permission from the CO - thanks for your speedy response. We were looking forward to the entire walk and which was certainly enhanced by the caches jotted along the way however the earth cache was the culmination of the whole experience. The sign board put things into perspective and was very informative and interesting reading. We would have loved to continue on the path but we were time deprived but so glad to have made it to this point. Fantastic on all levels and a favourite from us, thanks ridders76 [^]

We had chosen this Earthcache at random to take us somewhere out of the norm for our tour of the South Island. The result was a remarkable tramp with Skullracing through some great views. A highlight of our Mega Event tour that was well worth the round trip of two hours and a late lunch.
A highlight of our trip so far!

Logging with permission ( nice to have meet you at the Mega ) It was a great walk into this cache that we had picked as our Earthcache Day cache to do on our trip south for the Mega event - We opted to walk in and get the info required then do the other caches on the way out It was a warm walk in and we meet a few other groups enjoying the track - it is always good to learn more about this beautiful country of ours and how it was formed - thank you for the walk, the information and the earthcache
Heading down to NZ MEGA 2012 and we remembered it was Earthcache Day so we headed to the closest one at the time A nice walk in and some great photos were able to be taken during this walk . Met a few walkers in heading to this and managed to stop and have a chat with a few of them. Grabbed a few of the caches on the way in made the walk even more rewarding . Got to GZ and worked our way through the questions and spotted all our logging requirements . we were awaiting a confirmation e-mail when we bumbed into him at the NZ MEGA 2012 who then gave us the nod to log. Thanks for placing the earthcache and teaching us a little more on our earth

Nice day for a walk up the gorge. Got the required info, and now I am logging the find. Thanks
Sent answers to questions. Really enjoyed the walk along to this site and was a good area for an earthcache. TFTEC
Nice enough day for a stroll, the gorge was great at keeping the wind suppressed. I am surprised at Q4 I had no idea, glad I had the opportunity to learn it. TFTC.
Find #902. This was about the farthest we wanted to go along the Rakaia Gorge track today, it was too hot and humid to even consider walking further!
So, we reached the sign, accumulated the necessary information, admired the views, and then headed back under the scorching sun. Thanks for bringing us here and teaching us a bit more geology. Queston 4 was particularly interesting to lean about - but if you don't know how to refine Google searches using operators, you may have to browse for a while! SL TFTC.

Logged with permission. A marvelous walk, it didn't feel like the 9+ kms the GPS said I'd covered. I will be recommending this to French relatives visiting. Thanks for your efforts in setting this up.
A great tour of this part of the gorge with fantasic views and graphic geological formations. A bit windy at GZ today but still pleasant tramp. Logged with permission. TFTC
Logged with permission. The whole day today was an eye opener for me in unexplored countryside. A combination of great walks and some really interesting history of this area highlighted by caches such as this.

Tramped here with Smoothhound. Gathered the data from various places and submitted the answers. No reply after 12 days, so now claiming the find.
Part of a big day out with BaldEd. Good cache, nice location and had me searching the geographic/geophysical sites to determine answer to one question. Learned something else today. TFTC.
