Ahhhh, the fifth and final cache of my epic hike. Another absolute ripper. Now to get back to the car before dark.

I have been on annual leave over the past couple of weeks. First day of annuals....lockdown.

Well being from the regions we have some form of freedom so I decided to use it and go for a hike. Living just down the road in St. Arnaud I have been eyeing this cache off for a while, just looking for the right time.

I drove into the park and followed some tracks. Tracks that were never designed for a Skoda Fabia. I was poking around trying for find a good in, finally settling to park next to the gate that state Management Vehicles Only. According to the GPS about a 1.4km walk. That seemed fine to me. It was a perfect day and I would have happily walked 10km. I followed the track, past the fenced off private property and then started to follow my eye.

I wandered up slowly, following the many wallaby/kangaroo trails upward ever upward. Some fascinating rock formations here created thanks to weathering and other natural processes. As I said before it was a beautiful day and I was in no hurry. I stopped occasionally for a drink and just to take in the view.

Alas, there was a cache to find and find it I would.

The GPSr counted down the metres and soon it was just a hop, step and jump to the final prize.

The cache was in wonderful condition having been found a little less than a year ago (Martiniz hasn't yet logged this cache).

Saw this pretty cool tree with one of the biggest roots I had ever seen nearby so I had to take a picture.

After a freezing cold night spent camping near the Melville caves, we were keen to get up and moving. After a packing up our gear, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast. With a dozen caches on our hit list, it was time to hit the trails and collect some smiley faces. While the sun was shining, we did experience some light drizzle in the afternoon. But for a winters day, we couldn't complain.

After conquering the nearby cave, we made the short journey here. We found the clue a bit hard to follow, but we eventually made the find. This was the perfect spot to sit and have a snack while taking in the views. TFTC billywillysillydilly Big Grin

DAB and I planned a trip up to the area with a few hikes we wanted to do and a few caches too. The night was a cold one with -2deg on the temp gauge when we woke up at the camp site at the Melville Caves. We woke early, keen to get up and moving. After a packing up our gear, we enjoyed a camp cooked breakfast. With a page of caches on our hit list, it was time to get out there and do some walking.

We had done our homework on this one but was surprised there were no attributes on the cache page indicating how long of a hike this one was or anything else. Also parking the geo wheels wasn't easy. We ended up where we had hoped to and set off. The mountain was intimidating to say the least but we surveyed the best way to go and we were spot on with or walking path. After the previous cache, we were excited for what was in store for us at the top of the mountain. Once again the views were great but we had a job to do. The cache hint helped but there was still a bit of climbing down to be able to find it. With the sky blue above us, we had morning tea here but soon moved on back to the car. A nice amount of unloved days here to collect Smile

**Thanks to billywillysillydilly for hiding this cache for us to find and enjoy**

Such a great spot for a cache, and a fantastic day for it. Found in the company of McLookers and the Tritonz on our way to Wedderburn for the event.

17-Feb-17
Caching slowly towards Wedderburn this afternoon we managed to find an assortment of easy roadside placements and a handful of more strenuous rock scrambling ones while in the company of Wozzle68 and McLookers. With the sun shining but getting hotter we were successful in getting a variety of DT as well as unloved for McLookers to finish the 50 year unloved challenge. We found a logical spot to park and set off from. The heat was starting to effect us but we soldiered on until we reached GZ. We loved the rock formations here, they were amazing to walk through. Thanks heaps billywillysillydilly for bringing us here to this awesome spot.

It was a bit warm this afternoon so GZ was allowing us some welcome relief. We located the cache quickly, the cache and log are in excellent order. Thanks for showing us some amazing views bwsd, found today with The Tritonz and wozzle68.

From a 'nearby' cache up on Mount Koorooya, I could see along the ridgeline, all the way to where this cache was sitting Smile
It was just over a kilometre away Razz

And what a fun kilometre of bushwalking it was Big Grin
Views all the way !!
And a great variety of terrain to negotiate.
One minute struggling through scratchy scrub, next bounding across a granite outcrop and the next minute wandering through a grassy meadow !! Razz

With some skilful navigation ... guessing which way to go ... I made good speed down from the summit of Koorooya and onto the ridgeline Big Grin
A hiccup in the middle in a tangle of scrub, and then smooth sailing to GZ Big Grin

And at GZ I could see where to head for next [:o]

Ah !! It turned out to be an easy scramble down in the bowels of the Earth Smile
As expected, I found the cache on me way back out again Razz

TFTC and a good old ridgewalk [^]

Out for the afternoon with megs_q, found a few caches and enjoyed the company and the walk until I took a tumble off a granite tor near the summit of Mt Kooyoora. The 'walk' back to the car was slow and at times painful. Luckily nothing broken.

Many thanks billywillysillydilly for placing this cache Cool.

Find #759

Found with Tyred n Cranky and Geo Dog Penny

After Monday's expedition up here to find Kooyoora Cave, this time we had it all covered to find this cache. We had plotted the easiest way in by car that would get us as close to the cache as possible and then using the plotted track, that was an easy dissent from Mondays find, we used this to go up this time.
This made the walk up quite quick and easy with only a couple of stumbles over rocks.
At GZ it took a couple of minutes to find the goods, but with a couple of sets of eyes we discovered it safe and sound it is little cave.

Took Crock
Left Spinning top and Lego rubber

TFTC billywillysillydilly and this one is another well worth a Fave.

Find No. 461. Found with FUF009

After our last visit to the mountain we had plotted today's journey with great detail. This meant that we were able to get to the cache in the quickest and shortest way. Knowing the easiest way up and down made it quick. We had the cache in hand in no time flat.
Penny - our dog came along again and she enjoyed her second outing to this area. She would just love to get loose and get after those skippy roos.

Took blue matchbox ute. Left St.Arnaud magnet.

A neat little hide. TFTC billywillysillydilly

After finding kooyoora cave we continued on to this cache. Never climbed up here before, kids loved it. Took some photos and went back to the car a much easier way than where we climbed up.

A big weekend away up north west was had which took in just over 100 caches, including 4 First to Finds, about 1000 days towards the Unloved Cache Challenge (GC3KWWQ) and some really fun adventures both solo and with new and old friends. Topped off with a great well attended event cache at Wedderburn.. (with yummy food too) Thanks to all the various cache owners along the way and my apologies upfront for the copy / paste style logging of those 100 odd caches.. Some of the Caches hadn't been found for between 6months and 18months which added greatly to my 15 years required for GC3KWWQ.. Thanks..

Many of the caches were a blur and thus there isn't too much I can add from an individual cache log point of view, my apologies to the cache owners who each have put a lot of effort into their respective hides..

However these bunch of caches didn't fit into the blur category.. I'd sourced these out as prime unloved suspects, I love getting out for walk, dont get me wrong, I also love drivebys, however.. really.. this is what caching is all about, at least its how I explain caching to muggles.. "Its about finding a spot you love, then placing a cache to share the location with others".. Awsome view, and an opportunity to test out my knee with a good 50minute hill run.. I've spent alot of time orienteering in this park, I wouldn't say I know it well, however I can say I knew what to expect.. Thanks Billy for the cache, Attached photo of another Billy I saw..

Eureeka!
We found it on our third attempt. Well....Dave of davebarb did.
Found on our usual Thursday walk, which was supposed to have been an easy one, as this old bloke is still in recovery mode from some horrible disease. So instead, we walked to the Crystal mine, then up Mt. Kooyoora and down the ridgeline to this cache. Nearly killed me!
Thanks Bill for a well hidden, well stocked, decent sized container. Keep up the good work.

As this is our second unsuccessful attempt at this cache, so we thought it worthy of a DNF.
The first, got us to within 5mt of the cache and we turned the whole place over until the batteries gave out in the Garmin. This didn't take long as I had picked up flat batteries instead of the recharged ones. Idiot!
But today there is no excuse....we just couldn't find it!
We have read the cryptic clue now and it makes more sense. You would think we would have done that after the first mishap, but they don't call us the old blokes for nothing.
We will be back!

Found by Max with moral support from Roma!
We made an early start this morning as the weather forecast was for a change with developing high winds, particularly in the hills at an altitude around 400m and our arrival at GZ did coincide with both this criteria!
Good numbers again made for a quick find.
Thank you once more Bill for placing a decent sized container with ample swaps, should families with youngsters make it up to this marvellous viewing platform.
Romax.
