I am regretfully archiving this cache since there's been no response from nor action by the cache owner within the time frame requested in the last reviewer note.

Hi bumandworker

This geocache was brought to my attention as being in need of an owner maintenance visit and after my previous reviewer note, there has been no owner response. The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either replace it or archive it, after picking up any geo-litter. See the [maintenance section of the Geocache Listing Requirements/Guidelines](http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#listingmaintenance).

I've added this cache to my watchlist, and I will check back in four weeks to be sure that the maintenance has been done. In the meantime, I have temporarily disabled this listing. When the maintenance is completed, the owner can enable the listing by clicking on the link below the cache name to return it to active status.

Whatever your intentions, please **post a note** here on the cache page (not email) to let us know that you are still active and maintaining the cache. If a month passes without seeing a response, then I'll assume that this listing should be archived.

Please note, that if a cache is archived due to lack of owner maintenance, the cache is unable to be unarchived.

Hi, just leaving a maintenance request after our DNF, which seems to be a reoccurring theme

16-Jan-21
Unfortunately a DNF with jaxjarrett , pretty much found GZ but no treasure to be had, will need some maintenance me thinks as this is the 4th or 5th DNF in succession.

14-Jan-21
Found what looks like the location provided, but no Cache

07-Jan-21
Had a good scout around and no luck

07-Nov-20
Almost two years since the previous find and as mentioned in the last log there have been plenty of people finding the other one on this track - suggests a lot more failed attempts than just the two, now three, DNFs. I had a look around as best I could, but couldn't find anything.

07-Nov-20
oh bother. drove past here yesterday. lots of caches yet to find for us over the hill....so we will be back, and check this.

07-Jan-20
Posting a DNF as looked a little at spots matching clue.
Assumed cabbage tree hint was seedling Nikau.
Noteworthy the 10 or so finds on the cache half way up during last year yet only 2 logs on this one (both DNF!)
Maybe others too proud to admit defeat!
Very well developed walk with lots of interest along the way. First time up here as half previously been almost at our destination!

13-Feb-19
Caching cunning let me down this time! GPS said it was on the other side of the river but previous logs indicated this was not correct. Searched for a cabbage tree but none found, plenty of pungas and nicau palms, no cabbage trees seen on the whole walk. Searched places that fitted the clues but no luck. TFTC

On our trip thru NZ we visit a lot of places and see many spectacular locations.
This cache was one of our stopps thanks a lot to the owner.

Found the cache thanks to mumandme who we met at the waterfalls. Our GPS wasnt working at all and hadnt loaded the info and hint. Would never have found it! Lovely place! TFTC

14-Apr-18
Was pleased to find this one after the recent dnf's but with the CO having checked on it we knew it must be here somewhere. GPS wanted us 30m away on the other side of the river. Used the hint (ignored the first bit and focused on the next two bits) for a quick find. Nice to meet up with another couple of cachers here. Enjoyable walk and lovely waterfall. tftc

Been checked, still there

From our holiday in New Zealand after å friends wedding at Anatoki Salmon farms.
As the Cyclone Gita destrøyed our plans to do the Heaphey trail we needed to find another plave to explore. Today we choose to drive to Wainui falls.

When we enteret the parking place it startet to rain heavenly at it rained all the time after that. A very dissapointed trip towards the fall with one after the other DNF. But the trail was pretty nice Smile

Here i was searching a very long time but did not find anything Sad

My third DNF for the day. Nice falls though. I particularly liked the series of cascades on a small side on the way to the main falls.

20-Oct-17
Found with NZDi. After spending the past month or so stuck at home preparing our house for sale, the looming long weekend called for something special. So three nights were booked in a motel in one of our favourite places... Pohara and early on Friday morning we headed across the hills (firstly the Whangamoas and then the Takaka Hill). We didn't get off to a great start being held up slightly with a flat battery... perhaps I should have taken heed of what the AA man said a few weeks ago when he did a call-out to my address for a similar fault and bought a new one. Fortunately I have become self-sufficient in the flat battery rectification stakes and this was rapidly rectified. Knowing that we were going to a few out of the way places on our weekend endeavours and note wanting a similar experience, I purchased a new battery as we went through Nelson (I couldn't do it in Blenheim because we left too early).

The plan for the weekend was to do some caching in the Golden Bay area on Friday and Saturday, celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary on Sunday with a little more caching but some more traditional anniversary activities, and then do some more caching on the way home. Today's mission was to collect some of the caches in the Canaan Downs area at the top of the Takaka Hill.

Our caching around Canaan Downs was cut short when we discovered we had a flat tyre and decided we needed to get it fixed before everything shut up shop for the long weekend. This gave us some spare time in the evening before darkness set in to find a few more caches a bit closer to Pohara where we were staying. The last time we did a caching visit in this area, the track to Wainui Falls was closed for maintenance, so we took the opportunity of an open track to get the caches up here.

After DNFing the DOCTakaka cache, we headed up here for the main prize, although if I had read the previous DNF logs, I may not have made the effort and been rewarded with the splendor of the Falls which due to recent spring rains were in impressive form today. Fortunately, I can't tell the difference from a Kiakia to a Keikei to a Cabbage Tree, so when I read the hint, I picked what I thought was the last juvenile Cabbage Tree and went from there. At least NZDi looked while I looked elsewhere. We both failed so I looked where she had previously, but this time used the torch app on my mobile and found another of Workers empty makeup jars, just where the hint said it would be, so not only did I get the great view of the falls in full splendor, but I also found a cache the great Seagnoid and capperz had DNF'd... choice.

These falls are awesome but no joy finding the cache. Boo hoo. Will definitely be back. Cheers

04-Jun-17
Alas no luck here.
Taybeedragon and I spent quite a long time here, partly because there are so many people on the track. We had trouble identifying the shelf mentioned in the hint (opposite... what?) and of course there are no cabbage trees here. At all. I suspect the CO is talking about kiekie, of which there are huge amounts, and a young kiakia does look a bit like a young cabbage tree. Actually, so does an old one!

27-Feb-17
Beautiful walk in the shade on a hot day, busy track even on a weekday. Quickly grabbed the cache as muggles posed for a photo. Back to the car and a well received iced coffee at the new cafe. Cache all good.

20-Jan-17
We saw a lot of eels in the water on the way to this cache! look for them just under the rocks in the river!
This was actually a lot easier to find, than we expected!

20-Jan-17
Neat hide - very busy though - gotta pick your moments!!

28-Dec-16
checked cache....all good and nice and dry even

11-Dec-16
The river was quite high and we de used discretion was best.... another time.

04-Dec-16
Too hard for me today
Used the hint and rechecked a few times, and places but nothing found
Might have been me, maybe not
Nice walk and plenty of water coming over the falls today

04-Dec-16
Bookmarked to check yet again

06-Jun-16
Checked again recently. Exactly as originally placed

05-Jun-16
A possible hiding place was located but impossible to access without major effort which wasn't happening due to the track being quite busy.

16-Apr-16
Looked for a long time but no luck..too many muggles , we`ll be back.

Falls are incredible. What a view! Thanks for the cache

18-Dec-15
We last came up here post-floods (2012?) and picked our way along what was left of the track to the Falls.

A few years and several DoC dollars later and it was hard to recognise the area with its newly laid track and bridges.

I saw where the GZ roughly was, but with the river up quite high - surprisingly so given the lack of recent rain - a crossing was a little too tricky to manage.

A lovely little walk all the same and well worth it, cache or no cache.

01-Nov-15
We saved this walk to do with our hosts after another successful Golden Bay Bridge tournament the day before.
However, there happened to be a fairly important rugby match on earlier and our hosts decided to go back to bed while the intrepid cachers chose to venture out into the cool early morning air.

Heck, DOC have spent some serious money on this track. They must get the visitor numbers I suppose.
Apart from one set of stairs you could now drive a mobility scooter all the way in.
A quick find.
Took the obligatory holiday snaps and then headed back for a second attempt at Shady Rocks.

Yes, part of the clue not there now but the rest was spot on. Cache well tucked in place. Thanks for the cache.

checked cache, and hint still good too.

20-Mar-15
increased "D" as part of the hint is no longer there. but, careful observation of the area will work.

Although not been able to locate the cache. It was worth to come here.

no dmilie gorvtoday, but waterfall was great as well as whole track!!!

On a geocaching holiday with tmann421. Exploring the area, lots of amazing places, views and caches. Thanks to all the CO's for making this such a memorable holiday.

A great walk up this track and enjoyed the springs. Thought this was going to be a tricky one to find. As always when we get to these ones I headed in an area I thought likely and tmann went in the opposite. Hadn't even reached my area when I heard 'found it' Smile

TFTC and for bringing us to this lovely area. Worth a favourite

Whoo hoo, esp after no finds for nearly a year! Hint is so accurate, maybe the young cabbage has gone. Hard on the left was the keys part of the hint for us. Introduced a new cacher too and this was her first find. What an intro to the world of geocaching!

We have this book marked (see link) to check

No luck here for us, a tree fell on GZ ... I was able to see the rock shelf mentioned in the hint but nothing there Sad

We are the follow geocacher Wink but it took a while to reach it with a lot of climbing and wondering what kind of tree is a cabbage tree
Finally we made it and found a open box and wet logbook try to find a save place for the box TFTC

01-Feb-14
Yippee Cretan Runner Jules made it over the bridge this time and got to see the falls. They were running in full force today and were a sight to behold. There were a few people around but everybody had eyes on the kids jumping into the falls and thanks to the excellent hint we retrieved the cache, signed and returned it unnoticed. Thanks for bringing us back to this great place and for the cache.

Due to many Muggels I had no chance to search without been seen...

No trouble finding cache, I did read hint but like Biggles it was really more a matter of looking around and thinking where would I hide one ..

Out for a long day's caching in the Bay with Kiwi Explorer. Last time I was near here I'd meant to take a walk to the waterfall cache but ran out of time. Today it was time to find this and the two other caches I hadn't found on the track. Last time I actually walked the track was to find the old and now archived cache that used to be on the other side of the river. No need to get wet today for any of these cache though. If I'd noticed all the DNFs on this cache I might have thought twice about attempting it but I hadn't seen those so was oblivious to how hard it might be. The track has certainly seen a lot of damage since I was last on it. Although GPS was not too helpful here, a careful reading of the hint, careful observation of the surroundings and thinking where would I put it pretty much led me straight to the cache. Very relieved to be able to log a find here and definitely worth the effort. Log book rather mushy so managed to supply a replacement piece of dry paper here too. TFTC, Biggles.

25-Jul-13
Checked cache...still there, and dry enough to last a while longer yet. Updated hint due to marker rock being washed away.

18-Jul-13
Disappointing to leave without a find. No gps signal and clue no help. But it was a nice walk to a beautiful spot.

18-Jul-13
No GPS signal and found the clue confusing. Loved the hike and waterfall though. Visiting here from the US and this will be a highlight. Thanks.

17-Jul-13
More than a little disappointed that we didn't 'find' this one. But the situation was a somewhat stressful with a young Z4 not staying put with his older brother N7. There was only so much hunting Dad could do with an unhelpful GPS while being concerned about Z4's safety. Hopefully the whole family will be back in the future. A beautiful place. Surely a 'fav', if only we had the find.
TFTC B&W! Smile

08-Jun-13
Mrs S is better with swing bridges but this one was still outside her comfort zone. This left SoBad solo with GPS and hint. He got to 32m and couldn't see more track so returned after a photo stop. Reading logs now maybe he should have looked...

07-Feb-13
What a fun walk! and it was well worth the little bit of adventure to get there! A favourite. TFTC

07-Feb-13
Wow. There certainly was a lot of water down here wasn't there! The rocks still look as sand-blasted as the day it happened. I wonder how long it will be before they return to normal. A great walk in and really worth it to see the falls. Thanks for bringing us here.

04-Feb-13
Such a beautiful place to rest and take a swim!! The water is cold as ice, but clear and refreshing! TFTC

03-Feb-13
Nice waterfall! We had very much luck with the weather and went for a swim! Bloody cold water!

18-Jan-13
Oops... Only just figured out how to log a trackables visit! This trackable is getting a good tour of Golden bay NZ!

17-Jan-13
The track has changed significantly since I was last here two years ago, but the falls are impressive as ever with the rain we have had recently! Cache is a little damp but who can blame it living close to a waterfall!

10-Jan-13
We only had the coordinates and bad satellite view. So it took us some time to find the box w/o the hint.
Great nature!
TFTC! from DH6AI

01-Jan-13
Found a couple of days ago but indulge to log until now. The conditions were perfect for a walk to the falls. Certainly not a beach day and after the rain the previous day we were expecting to find an impressive waterfall on display. We weren't disappointed. The falls were the biggest we've seen in many years of visiting. The hint led is straight to the cache. A good hide. Thanks

14-Oct-12
Our 2 and 4 year old ran/clambered all the non super dangerous bits there and back (including the swing bridge). Clutching a kid each we enjoyed the full on spray and rainbow from the charging waterfall. It ended up being a really big awesome day. TFTC from Tupaia & family.

with a lot of rain today and yesterday the falls were massive. we couldn't take a pic because of all the spray! t4tc

10-Jul-12
The GPS battery clapped out before getting to GZ, but there are only so many places a geocache could be, aren't there, so not too much trouble locating it. Thanks, Jackie & Grant.

Have to DNF this one I'm sorry to say. I think my mind was more on the damage done by the recent heavy rains in the area than it was on the search. Nice walk though.

18-Mar-12
A great walk in and the cache took a long time to find!!! No problem with the cache but with a large group of muggles who hung about spoiling the tranquility of the place. Niteowlnz moved in for the find ater they moved on after countless photos. A lovely spot to go to only wish we had had it to ourselves for longer Smile TFTC

18-Mar-12
A lovely walk in the late afternoon - even enjoyed the swing bridge Smile did not enjoy the 6-8 kids with very little ( okay read "none") parental control running and jumping around the rocks in the drizzly weather - was much quieter after they all departed and I managed to come up trumps with the cache after a short hunt Smile it is a beautiful spot and the track is still quite easy even with the flood damage - thank you for bringing us to a great spot and the cache Smile

01-Mar-12
Track warning sounded ominous but the slips were negotiable without too much hazard. GPS was wildly inaccurate at GZ, indicating that we should have been across the other side - yeah, right! Classy Clarins container covered in a brown "cream" that might have added to the complexion if we'd been game to try it. Perhaps the rock will become a boulder when it grows up. Great spot. Glad we came here. TFTC

23-Feb-12
The waterfall was strong because oft the rain. Tftc.

04-Jan-12
Great walk despite landslips. Great views too.Smile

After several days of wondering, curiosity got the better of me and I headed off this afternoon to see what the track up to the Falls was like after last weeks “weather bomb”. I got to the car park to be greeted by a sign that said “Danger Track Closed” due to slips and mudslides.

This was a bit like a red rag to a Bull, and I was soon off to see for myself. I got up to near the swing bridge without any difficulty, only too be greeted by a large washout, negotiated this without too much trouble by dropping down into the river for a while, crossed the bridge and thought, oh well! that wasn’t too bad after all, only too be confronted by two even bigger slips that took quite a bit of care to get across. Got to the Falls and it was as picturesque as usual. Had a short break to let the GPS settle a little before finding the cache after a short search. What usually takes me an hour took me an hour 35 today.

Access to this one will not be easy for a while as the area is closed unless you have a permit (which I have). I recommend you don’t try it unless you are confident about doing some off track scrambling. Not one at the moment for mum and dad and the kids decked out in shorts and sandshoes. In hind sight it’s probably best to take heed of the sign and not to try it for a while.

Brownie came along for the walk as well
