Logs

29-Dec-22
This one broke us. We ransacked the likely hiding spot, dug around other hint objects; and had a general scrounge around the area, other trees, and down the banks.

12-Jun-21
Feeling a bit disheartened here. These dnfs are not logged without a thorough search. Time ticking on tho and it’s getting a bit cold.

28-Dec-20
Didn't spend much time looking as rest of group keen to get back for coffee

10-May-20
Another find for the kids

22-Sep-19
Took longer than expected as coords about 10 meters out. Ended up only a few meters from the track once we widened our search. "Shrub" is about 3-4 meters high and visible from the track.

11-Jul-19
Had a really good look......there are a lot of pine needles here!!!!! TFTC.

17-Aug-18
First time doing the Puketiro loop, legs are jelly but view was worth it! Took me 2.5 hours start to end (struggled up, ran down).

TFTC! In good condition

03-Jun-18
Found on a club trip exploring the area. A really nice patch of native forest with a multitude of bird call with the flowering Kohekohe, an interesting bit of history, a lovely farm enviroment a look at the Transmission Gully work and then up through the pines for a nice leg stretch. TFTC

09-May-18
I was a bit worried my battery was going to run out before I could locate the cache, but it held on and I located it quickly, plastic bag containing log is ripped but log is still dry

04-Feb-18
Quick find. All in order. Homeward bound! Tftc and hike

08-Jan-18
Walking the Puketiro Loop today with the CO, enjoying the downhill now in the shade on this warm day. Walked right past the cache which was lying exposed - much to the CO's amusement. Left it hidden in a way that cachers should recognise on this mound. Like the title Smile Thanks Mrs TT for a good day out!

05-Nov-17
This loop is clearly meant to be done in the clockwise direction (as I had done) because the long downhill on this side has compartively few caches. Some 800m from the previous cache and still arrived quickly. I took a slightly circuitous route to this cache while trying to figure out where it was. Decided a hint was required which provided a number of options. The best match had the cache of course. Found the intended route to the cache on depature as is always the case. TFTC.

23-Sep-17
Another good find after enjoying a nice loop walk. Cache all good. TFTC

23-Sep-17
Another straightforward find on our way down. TFTC

09-Sep-17
Last find of the day. Took a few minutes of searching but reasonably straight forward. Wicm Jnr smelt home and ran the rest of the way down the hill; I struggled to keep up with my wet leather boots and backpack. TFTC.

24-Sep-16
Cache was no longer covered when found. Its now back under pine needles. TFTC.

24-Apr-16

Great find

14-Nov-15
Found with Whitby scout troop family camp on the loop walk. Tftc

01-Nov-15
Start of a new month, so keen to bag a few finds on our second last month of Box Hill's Baker's Dozen challenge. Needed to go the nursery down the road so the loop around Battle Hill plus a couple of quick drive bys on the way in and out seemed a perfect choice after a stunning rugby result.

A quick find with TregearP and all in good order. TFTC.

01-Nov-15
Sunday jolly to the plant nursery so a little bit of caching an a good walk in Battle Hill with SJT_NZ was in order prior to getting back to plant. TFTC

01-Aug-15
down hill living up to what I expected at this stage got my thrill factor back in control and having a blast was very worried I would ride past the cache and had to keep stopping to check as I was not too keen to go back!! all good I LOVE DOWNHILL was worth the uphill.
gets a fav because I had so much fun.

11-Jul-15
Did today with The Wandering Dragons and Crystal Fairy. Came and joined for just the last little bit of their long hike. nice to complete. Thanks!

Cache # 1,052

Cache # 2,573 - Did today with Crystal Fairy, and Violet Butterfly joined us to capture this cache we missed a couple of years ago. Near instant find today - not sure how we missed it last time! TNLNSL. TFTC!

11-Jul-15
Decided today was the first day or training for some mountain climbing. Will be going to Laos later in the year and this was the first tramp to get "fit". Even though it was a good 10km hike with 5km of uphill, I didn't feel nearly as bad as I expected to feel. All the caches along the trail were reasonably easy finds. We had to cross the river and luckily there was a pair of wellingtons to share that helped. The view from the top was fantastic and the temperature at the top dropped quite substantially. Thanks for all the caches. Did with Wandering Dragons.

21-Feb-15
Spent a pleasant 4 hours walking the Puketiro loop track and collecting 9 caches on the way. Signed log and replaced as found.

21-Sep-14
Found this one quickly, thanks.

21-Sep-14
A very enjoyable walk round the loop track with the boys today. Tftc.

21-Sep-14
Found on a very enjoyable walk with Barnacle Boy and Mrs Muggle around the Puketiro Loop Track. The entire walk took us two and a half hours from leaving the car to arriving back at it.
No problems at all with this one - a quick find all in good order. Tftc.

30-Aug-14
This visit was in complete contrast to my earlier visit on June 2012. Last time, I spent most of my time searching on the wrong side of the track; this time I walked straight to it.

01-Jul-14
Powering down the hill, the GPS beeped to give the 20m warning, but by the time it did I had already passed the (as discovered a bit later) the cache location. Had to back track some distance and then hunt about to find the hint item. Once they became clear it was a quick find thereafter.
Cache all good, log signed and rehidden as found. TFTC

29-Jun-14
Another good find on the loop walk with Just-Lookin.

Found quickly with helpful hints. SL TFTC

18-Apr-14
Find #1901. A quick journey down the hill meaning I managed to complete the full circuit including cache finds and rest stops in just over two hours. Good trip - thanks for the caches. SL TFTC

23-Mar-14
A classically still and sunny autumn Sunday and our long-promised Battle Hill adventure coincided. Wonderful.
This was the sixth of the finds on the loop. Pleased to be heading downhill we had to brake and pull up for this one.
Surprised to be enjoying a straightforward cache find on this one - given the earlier logs and DNFs.
All in order, log signed, safely re-hidden, just as found.
TFTC found with team cacher Sweet P too Big Grin
The Turtle strikes again!

22-Feb-14
Firth and final find for the day. Nearly gave up on this one, GPS was struggling with tree cover (it's is 12yrs old). But an attempt a triangulation and a clue decrypt and revisiting where we had already searched and it was found. Thanks for the cache.

15-Feb-14
Visited today and found cache where we thought it should be!!! Have relocated it slightly (few cms) and changed hint slightly. Cachers do have to get up on the bank to find this one though!

12-Jan-14
Better go for a bit of a look. This one was always a bit tricky to find.

11-Jan-14
A cache in the hand is worth 2 in the bush - and this one stayed somewhere in the bush! Spent about 15 mins fondling pine needles to no avail in all likely locations around GZ. Given it's been unfound for a while, perhaps the CO should do a quick check to confirm it's still there and make me look foolish!

Was so looking forward to a clean sweep today - everything else on the loop was a quick find. Not this one. Over 30 minutes of looking with the two of us - searching every bush at least twice and some 5 or 6 times, and then expanding the search off the trail and over the bank. No luck. Will come back and do this after I see someone else find it.

24-Aug-13
No luck today. Wandering Dragons hands were really dirty by the time we called it quits, but had to get back to the car before they closed the gates.

15-Jun-13
Couldn't find it on this pass

27-Apr-13
#4065. Excellent coordinates made for a quick find. TNLNSL. TFTC.

16-Mar-13
Went back for another look and typically went straight to it this time. I swear I looked exactly where it was last visit. Never mind. Found this time and signed log book. Thanks for the cache!

24-Feb-13
Spent a fruitless half hour walking slowly around GZ. GPS (Garmin Oregan) showed accuracy of 6 metres, but even with the hint I couldn't find the cache. Would love to know if it is still there.

Thanks

24-Feb-13
Spur of the moment decision to geocache today. Scribbled down 58 not 57 for the coodinate. Spent a while looking a long way from the correct location. Will try again another day. Oops!

17-Feb-13
Found it

TFTC!!

Good cache while decsending down the hill.

TFTC!

17-Feb-13
Again we overshot GZ. Too much concentrating on getting down the hill, and not enough on the GPS. Quickly found once we walked back 150-metres or so. GPS wandering a bit, but cacher-instinct spotted likely spot reasonably quickly.

10-Feb-13
A bit of searching, but found this one in the end and picked up Geocoin too. Beautiful day to be out training for the Oxfam Trailwalker.

03-Feb-13
A quick find. Dropped off geocoin found earlier this morning - TFTC.

Last one on the loop. Bit of a search and relief to finally find. Hot on my heals were some fellow geocachers on bikes. End of a great walk with lots of good pics taken along the way. TFTC

Last one for today, quick find. TFTC. Sherlock Hood.

No joy for me here today. Having now read the earlier logs, I think my experience was very similar to Paua Rangers. My Oregon just wouldn't settle down and was taking me all over the place. I think this is one of those locations that my Etrex deals with a lot better. Of course, if I was organised, I would have had it with me anyway. I'll be back.

A nice day to go for a walk up the hill..found after a bit of a search..a couple mountain bikers pass me on the way up the hill today TFTC

26-Jan-12
Decided on the spur of the moment this morning that today would be a good opportunity to come and hunt out the two new caches up here. For previous finds along this track I have used my mountain bike but today I decided I would walk instead. It took exactly half an hour from the carpark to get here, and the cache was found after a few minutes' search in the second place I looked. The coordinates are about 13 metres out - I had a good satellite set today giving a stable position and even my cellphone GPSr was placing me within 3 metres of the Garmin 62s. I have included an averaged position fix taken at the cache location, hopefully it'll be of use to future cache hunters. Signed log, thanks for the cache and the opportunity for a very enjoyable walk!

Had to leave wife and kids 100 metres down as kids were over it! Enjoyed the walk. TFTC - Username changed to WhitbyWarthogs

A great day for a mountain bike ride so set off from the car park and worked my way up around the loop finding caches as I went ,this was the 4th of the day,was enjoying the downhill and overshot the cache by about 50 meters so back uphill I went ,found cache nice and easy signed log, then a nice exhilarating downhill ride TFTC

14-Jan-12
Unfortunately for me this one lived up to its name as greasy clay with a layer of pine needles caused an unplanned dismount on one of the downhill corners. As a result the rest of the ride down was a touch slower. No problems with the find. TFTC

Took me bloomin' ages to find this cache! GPS was all over the place - had me going off into the trees down a steep bank. Decided I might be the wrong side of the track, so spent quite a while rummaging under bushes with no success. Swapped from GPS to android phone and moved back to the other side of the track. Finally managed to get within 2m and narrowed the search down to 2 possible places. Was so glad to uncover that little box! I swear I was there the best part of an hour.

Great to see another couple of caches on this lovely walk, completing the loop. Thanks for excuse to come here again! (BTW I think in my excitment at finding the cache I forgot to record the date on the log Red Face)

Whoopee!!!!! a FTF Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin(08:30). Saw this cache when it was published and realised straight away where this cache was. I thought to myself that if I get a chance to look at going for this cache then I would but I was quite sure if I was going to get a chance. After completing all my work early this morning and knowing that the park was not going to be open till 8am and having a couple of spare hours I thought that I might go for a walk. Arriving at the car-park and decided that I would change to my walking gear as it was going to be a lot easier to do these two caches in my tramping boot, as I have being here before, it really didnt take too long to find my way to the entrance to the forest block although it has changed a bit since I was there last as I noticed that there are now a few extra piles of roading metal at the start of the walkway and I thought to myself are they looking at starting work on Transmission Gully, maybe, I wonder. After having a quick look I decided that since I was walking that I would take the anticlockwise route to GZ as it seem like the closest way to the cache. Arriving near GZ it took me a few seconds to think about where the cache was, initially I decided to head down the hill a bit but as I started to do that my GPSr started to bounce all over the place, so decided to climb back up and take a small break and wait for the GPS to settle, once I did this it really didnt take too long for me to find the cache, what a clever little spot to hide a cache and definitely a great spot to take a break especially when you are walking before carrying on. Thanks for placing the cache here and for bringing me to this lovely bush walk and definitely a great little spot for a FTF, TFTC TNLNSL (3852) FTF CRAZE Yeetrees also came out to visit this one as well.
